Magnesium oxide is a mineral supplement used to treat or prevent low levels of magnesium in the blood.
Magnesium is important for many systems in the body, but it is especially vital for healthy muscles and bones.
Some people use magnesium oxide to relieve heartburn or indigestion. The supplement may also be used short-term as a laxative.
The supplement is available over-the-counter (OTC) without a prescription.
Magnesium Oxide Warnings
You should not take more magnesium oxide than your doctor or the product label recommends. Too much magnesium in the blood can cause serious side effects.
Before taking magnesium oxide, you should tell your doctor if you are allergic to it, antacids, laxatives, or any other drugs.
You should not use this supplement as an antacid for longer than two weeks, or as a laxative for longer than one week, unless your doctor tells you to do so.
Before taking the supplement, tell your physician if you have or have ever had liver, kidney, heart, or intestinal disease. You should also tell your health care provider if you have or have ever had high blood pressure, or if you are on any kind of special diet.
You should take other medications either two hours before or two hours after taking magnesium oxide.
Magnesium Oxide and Migraines
Some people take magnesium oxide to alleviate symptoms of migraine. Research conducted in 2009 showed that serum magnesium levels are often low in patients with vascular headaches.
And a study conducted in 2002 showed intravenous doses of magnesium sulfate helped relieve symptoms of migraines in some patients. People who suffer from migraines may need to take higher doses of magnesium (600 milligrams) for symptom relief.
Consult with your doctor about approved treatments for migraines before taking magnesium oxide.
Magnesium Oxide and Anxiety
Some people take magnesium oxide in an attempt to relieve symptoms of anxiety. There have been a few reports that low levels of magnesium may be associated with anxiety.
However, other research has shown no link between improved symptoms and taking magnesium oxide.
Pregnancy and Magnesium Oxide
It’s not known whether magnesium oxide will harm an unborn baby. You shouldn’t take this supplement without first talking to your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant.
It is also not known whether magnesium oxide harms a nursing baby. Talk with your doctor before taking magnesium oxide while breastfeeding.
