Let’s Talk About SlimFast and How Bad It Is
If you’re old enough, you may still remember the original TV commercials that aired in the ‘80s and ‘90s. “A shake for breakfast, a shake for lunch, then a sensible dinner.”
“Give us a week! We’ll take off the weight!”
It all seems too good to be true: a diet where you can chug milkshakes instead of eating fruits and vegetables and actually lose weight. It’s not too good to be true. It’s SlimFast. Also, yes, it’s definitely too good to be true.
Launched in 1977 by Thompson Medical Company, SlimFast was marketed as an alternative to the trendy weight-loss solutions at the time: grapefruits, Weight Watchers, and The Scarsdale Diet. The shakes were presented as a palpable and delicious solution to their weight problems. But what is the reality of this promise? Do these delicious smoothies live up to their expectations?
“SlimFast is terrible for you,” says certified nutritionist and a nutritional chef Melissa Eboli. “You’d be better off taking a scoop of sugar and adding it to water than drinking all of the chemical non-food, sugar-laden ingredients that make up SlimFast.”
Here’s how the meal-replacement shake is supposed to work: “Replace any two meals with SlimFast shakes, bars or cookies, enjoy one sensible meal of your choice and three 100-calorie snacks in between,” the company site says. While consumers shouldn’t be afraid to skip Sunday brunch, they should try to abstain from drinking sugar-sweetened beverages like juice and sodas. Along with this diet, the recommendations extend to drinking plenty of water and exercising regularly.
However, nutritionists have never backed SlimFast because of the myriad drawbacks that plague those who try the shake.
“Those shakes often contain less than 200 calories,” says Dr. Rachele Pojednic, a Boston-based Assistant Professor of Nutrition at Simmons College and former research fellow at Harvard Medical School’s Institute of Lifestyle Medicine. “This is often significantly lower than what most people are eating at a meal. The biggest problem with these kind of meal replacement diets is that they don’t tend to teach behaviors that people can stick to and rely on in the real world. Once they stop drinking the shakes, people tend to go back to eating meals that are significantly higher in calories, and they put the weight back on.”
Dr. Pojednic also says that fad diets such as these often don’t work because they aren’t sustainable.
“I believe that you should never do something with your diet that you’re not willing to stick to for the rest of your life,” Dr. Pojednic says. “You can cut calories in a similar fashion with nutrient dense foods like fruits and vegetables, and this way you are learning how to portion out real food rather than relying on expensive shakes that don’t really support healthy, long term behavior change.”
While we’d like to believe the magical solution to weight loss lies in a drink, the reality is much more complex. So what can be done to lose weight and maintain that weight loss? Diet and exercise. It’s the answer all those shake-sippers were afraid of hearing in the first place.
“Eat organic whenever possible,” Eboli says. “Stay away from processed foods, fried foods, and unhealthy food over all. Be conscious of caloric intake as well and don’t drink SlimFast. For starters, it is made from non-organic whey protein, which is inflammatory and turns into sugar once metabolized. The remainder ingredients are sugar, chemicals, and preservatives, which can definitely can contribute to weight gain.”
The reason SlimFast is often lumped into the “fad diet” category is because it is simply that: A fad diet that has somehow been around for 40 years. These kinds of weight-loss products, meal-replacement smoothies, and little cheats will always be around in some form. Just remember, if it seems too good to be true, it almost certainly is exactly that.

2 Weeks ago I committed to my 14 Days SlimFast Challenge which was a part of sponsored challenge and post from Global Influence and Walgreens on behalf of SlimFast.
I received 16 Slim Fast meal replacement creamy milk chocolate shakes and 16 chocolate cookie dough protein meal replacement bars.
I learned that I suppose to:
- Replace 2 meals a day with the shakes and bars
- exercise 30 minutes a day
- eat a 1200 calorie a day diet
How did I work the SlimFast 14 Days Challenge Program:
1. First of I had a cereal and 2% milk for breakfast (about 8 AM)
2. Secondly I went to my gym in the morning 3 times a week (Monday, Wednesday and Friday). Tuesday and Thursday I exercised at home using my new Zumba Wii Game that my husband got me for Christmas.
3. Right after gym or workout I immediately drank 1 bottle of Slimfast shake (190 calories, 6g of fat, 25g of carbs, 5g of fiber, 18g of sugar, 10g of protein and loaded with other vitamins and minerals) – I took the shake around 10:30 AM
4. Around 12:30 PM I was already hungry so I had my egg omelette with cheese and vegetables.
5. Around 3 PM I had another Slimfast shake or Slimfast cookie dough protein meal replacement bar.
6. Around 5:30 or 6 PM I had a full size dinner with my family (approximately 400-500 calories) such as chicken with vegetables, meatballs with vegetables, turkey tacos with vegetables or even my most famous loved by everyone 30 minute Maple Pecan Salmon with Arugula Salad.
7. Around 9 pm if I was hungry I had a very light snack such as backed multigrain crackers with hummus dip or celery with hummus dip.
I really liked the feel during the day that my body was light and not overstuffed, but you also see that I was not over-stuffing myself. I didn’t feel light headed but i did feel hungry every 2 or 3 hours.
So now you want to know my results, right?
2 weeks ago when I put my body on the scale I was at 178 pounds ( I know I am still over weight)
Today this morning when I stepped on my new Ozeri scale I was 176.8 pounds
Although I suppose to lose 6 pounds in 2 weeks I only lost like 2 or maybe even less. But I also think that my muscle mass increased because I was doing a lot of weight training as well as I still had ton of fluid in my body because I drank plenty of water, oh I forgot to mention I did drink coffee and teas with small amount of brown sugar during my challenge.
One last note from my gym buddies whom I talked about my 14 Day slimfast challenge: Few of my gals already did the slimfast diet or challenge. They told me that after you go off of slimfast diet or challenge most of them gain the weight right back.
The key is to keep exercising 30-60 minutes a day, eat small meals every 2-3 hours, eat fruits and veggies, avoid soda, sugars, high fructose corn syrup, alcohol, pastas and don’t eat or snack after 7 or 8 pm depending on when you go to bed.
These above are personal thoughts, opinions and results about my 14 day slimfast challenge products.
Update: I have more exciting news! I stepped on the scale today on Jan 20 at 3Pm wearing my normal clothes and after having full size lunch my weight is actually less!
So I noticed that the weight loss is gradual, takes an effort of exercise and eating healthy. Now that my Slimfast challenge is over, my real challenge starts today. I need to keep the weight off and still keep loosing it. Remember I told you that my normal weight is 150 pounds. Today is definitely exciting news for me
Update on December 2014. After my 14 days Slimfast challenge in January, I haven’t had any single SlimFast shake or bar. My weight is now 170 pounds however. As you can see I went from 180 to 170 in 1 year and keeping it steady and lowering it a little bit at a time. How I did it? Follow my fitness tips above and make sure to eliminate soda, sugars, high fructose corn syrup, alcohol, pastas, breads and don’t eat or snack after 7 or 8 pm depending on when you go to bed, but at least 3 or 4 hours before bed time.
My goal is to go back to 150 pounds and I’m on a mission. Follow me along as I share many healthy soups and recipes, fitness tips.

SlimFast is a well-established line of meal replacement shakes and bars. The company claims that the current version of the product has been perfected following more than fifty clinical studies, offering more options than ever before. What is SlimFast?
SlimFast is a weight loss program that supposedly makes it easy to lose weight. It provides different options. The SlimFast plan is not limited to a specific set of foods to consume. You can choose delicious food options that suit your preferences. It’s not just about eating fruits and vegetables or making do with shakes and smoothies.
This SlimFast review, by the way, is for the new system under a new administration. Unilever sold the SlimFast brand in 2014. With this transfer of ownership come some tweaks and improvements. This new system takes into account numerous clinical studies to improve the SlimFast diet plan with more diet choices.
As a branded weight loss method, the commercial aspect of it is noticeable. If you go to the website SlimFast.com, the official website of this weight loss plan, you will see not only diet plans and recipes but also for-sale products that are essential for you to follow the SlimFast diet plan.
NOTE: To avoid confusion, here’s a brief clarification. SlimFast is a brand name that refers to a diet plan and a range of products. If you want to do this weight loss plan, you will have to follow the SlimFast diet plan and purchase SlimFast products which include meal replacement shakes and smoothies as well as SlimFast snacks.

How Did SlimFast Start?
SlimFast is said to have been in practice for more than 40 years.
The SlimFast brand (diet plan and products), as mentioned earlier, used to be owned by Unilever.
At present, the company responsible for the development and manufacture of SlimFast products is KSF Acquisition Corporation located in West Palm Beach, Florida, USA.
We couldn’t easily find information about KSF Acquisition Corporation online. What we learned, though, is that this company is an investee of Kainos Capital, which acquired the SlimFast brand from Unilever back in 2014.
Scroll below for one of the best products we’ve seen over the last year.
The SlimFast plan promise is simple. It claims to provide significant weight reduction without having to get hungry and without having to struggle with tasteless meals.
It promises the shedding of pounds with one sensible meal for the day complemented by meal replacements and tasty SlimFast snacks. Moreover, it claims that results become noticeable in just one week.
As stated on SlimFast.com, you can achieve 50% more weight reduction by using the SlimFast diet plan as compared to reduced-calorie diets.

Does SlimFast Work?
When followed correctly, SlimFast does work. This structured diet program can deliver the weight loss it promises if you stick to how it’s meant to be used. However, the claim of losing weight without being mindful of the sizes of the portions you eat is not accurate.
SlimFast involves the reduction of the number of calories you take so you can’t just go on consuming delicious food without imposing limits.
Benefits & Results
SlimFast Benefits And Results
The SlimFast website features various testimonies from users of the SlimFast diet plan. These include male and female users. They claim to have lost weight in the range of 20 lbs. to 42 lbs. These user testimonials are posted on SlimFast.com.
The testimonials come with respective full names and brief backgrounds, making the testimonials appear to be more valid, and not mere fabrications.
For those who don’t have health issues but are trying to lose weight, SlimFast should be a compatible weight-loss option.
If you can handle a low-calorie diet, you should be able to follow the SlimFast diet plan.
However, it is recommended consulting your doctor first before committing to the SlimFast plan. This is particularly important for those who are taking medication for their conditions.
Details On SlimFast And Weight Loss
There are no scientific or clinical studies specifically aimed at exploring the effectiveness of adopting a SlimFast only diet plan. However, the makers of SlimFast are citing a long list of research publications made to appear that they support the idea of using the SlimFast diet plan and SlimFast products.
We couldn’t find links to the specific research publications so we couldn’t ascertain if the research was conducted to prove or disprove the claims of SlimFast. The research appears to support health benefit potentials associated with SlimFast’s different components, not studies intentionally conducted to explore the effectiveness of SlimFast products.
How To Use SlimFast?
SlimFast is designed to enable a low-calorie diet that is easy to follow. Here’s a summary of how this diet plan works.
- You will have to eat six times per day.
- The six times include eating one sensible meal*, and two meal replacement** shakes or smoothies.
- With the six times that you eat per day, you have to consume a total of 800 to 1,500 calories per day, well within the standard definition of a low-calorie diet.
- Each SlimFast meal replacement shake or smoothie has about 120-130 calories.
- Each SlimFast snack has 100 calories.
- The amount of calories in the single “sensible” meal you eat for the day depends on liking. It could be from 500 to 1000 calories. You just have to avoid overeating for this meal.
- In addition to eating six times a day, you also need to exercise for at least 30 minutes daily.
- You also have to drink plenty of water (at least eight glasses per day).
- Once you achieved your target weight, you can switch to having two sensible meals per day, and one meal replacement. The 30-minute daily exercise routine should also be maintained even after achieving your desired weight.
A sensible meal is one that is similar to what you have been used to eating before you started the SlimFast plan.
It should not be filled with comfort food but something that comes close to one of the meals you consume to achieve a balanced diet. For a guide on what a sensible meal is like, refer to the recipes on SlimFast.com.
SlimFast offers two types of meal replacements: shakes and smoothie mixes. The smoothie mix may be added to milk or other beverage. You need to make sure that the milk you use does not contain more than 50 calories. Otherwise, the calorie count for your smoothie replacement will be significantly raised.
SlimFast snacks can either be 10-gram cookies or 15-gram protein bars.
The standard SlimFast diet plan is mainly intended for women (1 meal + 2 meal replacements + three snacks). For men, SlimFast meal replacement and snack intake just need to be augmented to 200 calories.
This means that instead of using one scoop of the SlimFast meal replacement, two scoops will be needed (to get 200+ calories).
Instead of eating one energy bar or a pack of cookies or bar, for example, twice the amount will have to be taken.
The SlimFast Taste
SlimFast is touted as a diet plan that lets you eat delicious food. As such, it’s worth evaluating the taste.
In reality, it would be difficult to come up with a truly objective assessment of the taste of SlimFast products since taste is rather subjective. However, based on what users are saying, there are those who say that the meal replacements contain too much sugar.
Some say the coffee products seem to taste like they contain burnt coffee beans. Still, there are those who say that they like the taste of SlimFast products.
Perhaps, a more sensible way to put it is to say that SlimFast tastes just like how a typical diet would taste.
The adjective “delicious” as used in SlimFast’s marketing apparently refers to the standard taste anyone would expect in ordinary “delicious” food—that is sweet food should be sweet and savory should be savory.
SlimFast recipes, meal replacements, and snacks are not meant to cut down on sugar, salt, and other typical ingredients that create the flavor everyone is accustomed to.
The goal is more on controlling the amount and type of meal eaten. It’s also about choosing the right food to eat.
Potential SlimFast Side Effects
Like most other products, SlimFast is far from perfect. It is not free from side effects. Different people have different reactions to its products and SlimFast recipes.
Some users report having experienced diarrhea after using SlimFast products.
This is something that cannot be totally ruled out since too much consumption of protein does have adverse effects, one of which is diarrhea.
SlimFast promotes low-calorie intake, which may lead to minor side effects such as constipation, fatigue, and nausea.
It been reported that the use of sugar substitutes in the sugar-free versions of SlimFast shakes might cause gas build-up in the stomach and possibly diarrhea in some users.
To avoid the unwanted effects of imposing a low-calorie diet, you should consult a diet or health expert.
SlimFast Product Warnings
As a low-calorie diet, it’s important to be aware that the reduced intake of calories may have an impact on blood sugar levels. It’s important to work with a nutritionist when trying any form of weight loss plan that involves alterations on typical food intake.
Additionally, a SlimFast diet may also interfere with medications. Adjustments may have to be made to avoid health problems or complications.
Low-calorie diets should only be adopted by those who have a BMI of at least 30. It is also not advisable for pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers.
SlimFast.com says that it is possible to drink alcohol while taking the SlimFast diet plan. However, alcohol can reduce the weight loss efficacy of this diet plan especially if you take in a lot of calories from mixers.
Any SlimFast Lawsuits?
We did not find lawsuits against SlimFast, at least for the new SlimFast under KSF Acquisition Corporation. Likewise, we didn’t find FDA advisories regarding SlimFast meal replacement and snack products.
What we found was an advisory for SlimFast Lipo Fast Burner Capsules Weight Loss for Men. This is apparently one of the products when the brand was still under Unilever.
The FDA advisory warns that SlimFast Lipo Fast Burner is not a registered product and has not undergone the evaluation of the agency. The public is hence advised not to buy it.
Since the SlimFast products available on the SlimFast.com website don’t include the products mentioned in FDA advisories, it’s safe to say that there are no health risks or concerns reported regarding them.
If you don’t like the taste of SlimFast’s meal replacements or you can’t handle the system it imposes, you can try other weight loss plans. Similar products include:
This is a comprehensive low-calorie diet plan (about 800 calories per day) that also involves the use of meal replacements. However, it’s not something you can do on your own like SlimFast. The plan entails medical supervision as well as counseling and lifestyle education. You will also have to take in vitamin and mineral supplements following the Optifast plan.
If you prefer something that affords greater flexibility, Medifast is something you might want to consider. It lets you choose a plan that involves 4 Medifast meals (meal replacements), 2 self-prepared meals, and 1 healthy snack. This plan lets you consume around 1,300 calories per day.
DIY Shakes And Snacks
SlimFast is mainly about taking a low-calorie diet by substituting two of your three meals for the day with meal replacement (shakes or smoothies) and eating three snacks (for the day) with 100 calories each.
If you are not fond of the taste of SlimFast’s meal replacements and snacks, you can just create your own. You just have to make sure you get enough nutrition with them and that they are around 100 calories each.
Recommended ingredients would include lactose-free yogurt, non-fat milk, raw cacao powder, flaxseed, various berries, peanut butter, and unsweetened almond milk.
“It’s regular Slimfast – which I have used in the past to get my weight back under control. The negatives are that you really need a blender (I use a stick blender) to mix this well enough that you don’t get a clumpy mess. Also, there is just the very slightest of a chalky undertaste. Not bad but there. I know that a lot of people knock Slimfast for how sweet it is, but I have used it more than once in the past with good results. I take prednisone periodically to treat a chronic illness and it brings the weight on like crazy.”
“I use Slimfast to lose weight and to maintain my weight.”
“I’ve had watery bowels for 36 hours after drinking only 3 shakes! In between running to the bathroom, I’ve only been able to eat slices of bread and take small sips of electrolyte water! I’ve lost 4lbs so far, just not how I imagined!”
The Bottom Line on Slim Fast
So, are you heading out to buy a case of SlimFast Advanced Shakes? Well, we like the longevity of the company and it’s affordable, but we’re hesitant about this one because the research doesn’t directly link it to weight-loss, there are no dedicated peer-reviewed studies and elements in the formula that could disrupt or slow the digestive process, like fiber, to reduce hunger and slow the onset of appetite are missing. We’re also concerned about the fact that beverages are not as effective as solid foods in terms of satiety.
Do you want to trim down a bit? If so, we suggest going with a program that’s backed by clinical research – we just tend to err on the side of our scientific research.
Among the best products we’ve seen this year is one called Noom. It features personalized, custom meal plans, expert articles and resources, food tracking, exercise tracking and more. There’s even human coaching. We’ve found some pretty amazing user reviews and customer service rocks.

Naturally, no one’s weight loss journey is the same and you will have questions. Here are some frequently asked questions our customers have about using Slim Fast.
Can I use the Slim Fast 3-2-1 diet on a long term basis?
Yes. You can safely follow this diet over a longer period of time if you wish to lose weight or keep your weight down. This diet should not be followed by individuals who need to gain weight.
The Slim Fast diet was made to meet the nutritional needs of adults who need to lose weight. Children have different nutritional needs and it is important for them to have a healthy diet, sufficient sleep, and regular exercise. If you think your child needs to lose weight try helping them with a healthier diet or encouraging them to have more regular exercise. You can also consult your doctor for advice about a good diet and exercise program.
Is the Slim Fast diet safe for diabetics?
If you have Type 2 Diabetes and are overweight you may benefit from the Slim Fast diet. However, you should not start on sudden diets without first consulting your doctor regarding your condition and any medications that you may need to help your weight loss. If you are Type 1 Diabetes, first discuss your weight loss plan with your doctor as your dosage of insulin may need to be adjusted as your weight reduces.
Is it safe to use medications while following the Slim Fast diet plan?
Its always best to consult your doctor about a new weight loss diet when on medications. Your dosage may need to be changed.
Will Slim Fast cause headaches?
Weight loss, in general, can have a number of mild side effects some of which are dizziness, headaches, and feeling cold. These side effects normally do not last long, and headaches and dizziness can be calmed by drinking sufficient water.
Will Slim Fast cause problems with flatulence, constipation, and diarrhoea?
Following the Slim Fast diet will not cause such side effects. However, if you do have any side effects, its important to rule out any possible causes of lactose intolerance. Slim Fast products are also high in fibre and may cause flatulence in people who are not used to high fibre intake. If this happens with you, introduce Slim Fast products gradually, rather than immediately swapping your diet.
Can I use Slim Fast products while breastfeeding?
Breastfeeding uses up a lot of calories in your body, and your baby will need an average of 500 calories from your body on a daily basis. During breastfeeding your body needs all the nutrition you can get during this time.
Can I follow the Slim Fast diet when pregnant?
Pregnancy generally requires you to have a higher level of nutrition than normal. However, in some cases, women become too heavy during pregnancy and this can cause health problems. If you want to follow any weight maintaining diets during pregnancy, consult your doctor first.
Can I really get balanced nutrition from the SlimFast 3,2,1 Plan?
Yes! When you combine 2 SlimFast meal replacements, 2 to 3 healthy snacks (under 100 calories), and a sensible third meal of 600 calories, you can get all the daily nutrition you need whilst losing weight. The SlimFast 3,2,1 Plan provides 1200 to 1400 calories per day, which is a safe and effective level for weight loss. Each SlimFast meal replacement gives you a third of your daily nutrition.
Is the SlimFast 3,2,1 Plan suitable for everyone to follow?
If you need to lose more than 20% of your body weight (have a BMI over 30), are taking any medication or are under 18 years of age, then you must see your doctor to discuss your weight loss plans.
What is the BMI, and how is it calculated?
The Body Mass Index (BMI) is used to provide a good estimate as to whether someone is a healthy weight for their height. BMI is defined as the weight in kilograms divided by the square of the height in meters (kg/m²). A healthy BMI is 18.5-24.9. A BMI over 25 is defined as overweight, and over 30 is defined as obese.
Can I safely follow the SlimFast 3,2,1 Plan on a long-term basis?
Yes, you can safely follow the SlimFast 3,2,1 Plan on a long-term basis. You can remain on the SlimFast 3,2,1 Plan until you reach your target weight.
