Home remedies for body odour

  • Apply tea tree oil to problem areas, as long as it doesn’t irritate your skin. It kills bacteria and also has a pleasant scent.
  • Essential oils of lavender, pine, and peppermint fight bacteria and smell pleasant. Some people have a skin reaction to certain oils, so test a small patch of skin before using.
  • Citrus fruits such as lemon change the pH level of your skin, making it more acidic. All bacteria, including odour-causing kinds, have a hard time surviving in a highly acidic environment. Just rub on some lemon juice and pat dry.
  • Use a cotton wool pad to wipe vinegar onto your armpits to cut down the number of odour-causing bacteria. Don’t use immediately after shaving, though, or it will sting badly. The same applies to witch hazel.
  • Splash witch hazel directly onto your skin or apply it as often as you like with a cotton wool pad. The refreshing, clean-smelling liquid is both drying and deodorising.
  • Dust bicarbonate of soda or cornflour on any problem part of your body. Both of these powders absorb moisture, and bicarb also kills odour-causing bacteria.
  • The fragrant kitchen herb sage can fight bacteria and reduce perspiration. You can buy sage oil in health food shops, or brew some sage tea from the fresh or dried leaves and store it in a bottle in the fridge. After using sage, be sure to wash your hands before touching your face.
  • Go for arrowroot. This delicate powder is surprisingly effective at absorbing the excess perspiration from your skin. The essential oils help neutralise odour-causing bacteria. Mix together 50g arrowroot with 5 drops each of clary sage and patchouli essential oils. Store the powder in a tightly sealed container.

Soaps to reduce body odour

Pick a deodorant soap, such as coal tar or tea-tree oil, or antibacterial hand-and-body wash. These continue to kill bacteria even after you’ve finished washing. If the soap doesn’t irritate your skin, use it daily. Some people find these soaps too drying, in which case their use should be restricted to the underarms and groin.

Antibacterial surgical scrubs, such as Hibiscrub or Betadine, are available from most pharmacies. These are used to clean patients before surgery. But as these products can dry your skin, you should use them only in the shower, so you can rinse off quickly, and only on sweaty areas such as the armpits and groin.

Squeeze out a little of the cleanser, wash the target areas, then rinse off and finish your shower with ordinary soap.

Other techniques to stop body odour

  • Shave regularly under your arms. Armpit hair increases body odour because it traps sweat and bacteria.
  • Change your shirt every day and probably twice a day during periods of warm or hot weather.

How to prevent body odour

  • Watch what you eat
    Extracts of proteins and oils from certain foods and spices remain in your body’s perspiration, contributing to body odour. Fish, cumin, curry and garlic top the list.
  • Eat plenty of spinach, chard and kale
    Leafy green vegetables are rich in chlorophyll, which has a powerful deodorising effect.
  • Take chlorophyll tablets
    These are made from plants such as kelp, barley grass and blue-green algae. Take as recommended.
  • Chew a few sprigs of parsley
    Or prepare parsley tea by steeping a teaspoon of chopped fresh parsley in a cup of boiling water for 5 minutes. Allow to cool, then drink it. Lime-tree tea stimulates the excretion of waste products from the body, which may in turn make sweat sweeter. Also known as linden tea, it is made from lime-tree blossom and is delicately fragrant, a little like jasmine tea.

Did It Work? 3 DIY Solutions for Smelly Underarms

For those looking to smell fresh all day long, deodorant is the obvious answer. Unfortunately for me, the answer is not as simple. I’ve found that deodorants and antiperspirants don’t usually work on my armpits. Most leave me with a scent akin to that of old plastic flowers kept in the sun. Mix it with a day’s worth of sweat, and it’s D-E-A-D-L-Y.
So, after years of searching far and wide for the perfect deodorant with no luck, I decided why not attempt to use something natural? And no, I’m not about to suggest natural deodorant. According to the internet, which provides a wealth of information on the issue (I’m not alone!), many people attempt DIY solutions in order to knock out noxious underarm odors.
In my search, I found 3 that apparently nip the problem in the bud. All possess natural detoxifying properties, which kill organisms that produce bad odor in the first place. To determine whether the solutions were worth it, the only way was to undergo an investigation. I opted to use one of three DIY solutions per day (for 3 days in total) instead of wearing deodorant.

DAY 1: TEA TREE OIL

According to internet oilbolaryos, tea tree oil is a natural antiseptic, which means, it fights off the microorganisms that make you smell funky.
THE PROCEDURE: STEP 1: Use two drops of tea tree oil to two tablespoons of water.
STEP 2: Apply it onto freshly washed armpits using a disposable round.
NOTE: Avoid using tea tree oil directly on armpits!
THE VERDICT: If you like the scent of tea tree oil, you’ll enjoy this. Its menthol, almost medicinal fragrance left me smelling like a room diffuser all day. I was a bit worried because when I first applied it to my underarms, my skin got warm; I thought I might have a negative side effect. But luckily, the sensation subsided. What’s more, it had a nice cooling sensation, too! As long as your skin’s not sensitive, I would highly recommend this as an alternative for your deodorant!

DAY 2: FRESH LEMON

THE PROCEDURE: STEP 1: Slice a fresh lemon into rounds.
STEP 2: Rub the rounds over freshly washed armpits.
NOTE: If skin is sensitive, mix lemon juice with the same amount of water.
THE VERDICT: Let’s just say, you would not want to be near me during this trial. It just didn’t work for me! My body odor surfaced not long after I used the lemon rounds, in spite of their sharp, zesty scent. In fact, I had to keep my underarms glued to my sides until I could shower next. Maybe for those who have a lighter or mild musk (unlike me), this would work for you. What I will say though is that it was a lot gentler than the tea tree oil.

DAY 3: APPLE CIDER VINEGAR

Not just an ingredient, ACV is a microbe-killing powerhouse, too. It’s naturally acidic, thereby eliminating the odor of your pits naturally.
THE PROCEDURE: STEP 1: Mix the same amount of water and ACV.
STEP 2: Using a disposable round, apply to freshly washed armpits.
THE VERDICT: I had high hopes for ACV since it’s touted by so many to reduce body odor. But for me, unfortunately, it didn’t delivered as expected. While I didn’t smell my own scent, it was masked by ACV’s tart, acidic one. I caught whiffs of it throughout the day, and it was unpleasant to say the least. Maybe if I combined it with bentonite clay and wore it as underarm mask instead, it’d be more effective. At least I could wear a better-smelling deodorant afterward!

Remedies To Keep Armpit Odors At Bay!

Is excessive sweating bothering you? Body odor is normal, but smelly armpits can sometimes get out of hands. Even regular baths, perfumes, or roll on can’t seem to solve this issue. And it can be humiliating for you and a major turn off for others. If you’re looking for natural alternatives to help keep you fresh, then you are at the right place! Here are some remedies you must try:

Apple Cider Vinegar

Considered as a wonder remedy, Apple cider vinegar is one of the best replacement for deodorant. The anti-bacterial properties fight off against bacterial growth.

Pour some apple cider vinegar in a bowl. Dip a cotton ball in it and wipe your armpits. This will reduce the ph of the skin, thereby suppressing the armpit odor. You can also make a spray by filling water and apple cider vinegar equally in a spray bottle.

Essential Oils

Essential oils are used to treat various skin and health issues. Their pleasant fragrance helps mask the odor, and their antibacterial properties kill the bacteria.

Add a few drops of lavender essential oil and water in a spray bottle. Directly spray it on your underarms. Alternatively, you can also mix lavender oil with any carrier oil and apply it to your underarms.

Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree oil is one of the best remedies to combat underarm odor. Its astringent and antimicrobial properties help minimize the pore in your underarms and fight the odor-causing bacteria in the area.

Mix two drops of tea tree oil and two tablespoons of water in a bowl. Dip a cotton ball in it and apply it on your underarms. Alternatively, make a spray by filling tea tree oil and water equally in a spray bottle.

Baking Soda

Underarm odor is very embarrassing and should be treated immediately to prevent infection. Prepare a solution by adding one teaspoon of baking soda in a cup of water. Stir the solution well. Now, take a clean washcloth and dip it in this solution. Apply it under your arms for some time.

Lemon Juice

Lemon juice is another highly acidic ingredient that can be used as a home remedy for body odor. It reduces the pH of your skin and makes it uninhabitable for bacteria.

Take half a lemon and rub it directly on your underarms. Repeat once daily until you notice an improvement. If you have sensitive skin, mix the juice of half a lemon with half a cup of water to dilute it.

Coconut Oil

Coconut oil contains medium-chain fatty acids, which are powerful antimicrobial agents that can keep the odor-causing bacteria at bay and restore the pH of your skin.

Take some coconut oil on your fingers and apply it directly on your armpits. Leave it on until it is absorbed and say bye to smelly pits!

Some Other Tips To Follow

  • Shower at least two times a day if you sweat a lot.
  • Apply talcum powder in all the body folds after a shower.

Body odour starts with certain types of sweat. Eccrine glands pour out clear, neutral-smelling sweat, which cools your body as it evaporates. Apocrine glands, concentrated in your underarms and genitals, secrete a substance that bacteria feast upon, causing strong odours. Stress, ovulation, sexual excitement and anger can cause apocrine glands to kick into high gear. Some diseases cause the body to produce particular odours, and so do drugs such as venlafaxine (Effexor) and bupropion (Wellbutrin).

Natural remedies for body odour

‘ Wipe rubbing alcohol, vinegar or hydrogen peroxide onto your underarms during the day to cut down the numbers of odour-causing bacteria.

‘ Dab on witch hazel. You can splash it directly on your skin or apply it as often as necessary with a cotton pad. The clear, clean-smelling liquid has drying and deodorizing properties.

‘ Dust baking soda or cornstarch on any odour-troubled part of your body. Both of these powders absorb moisture, and baking soda also kills odour-causing bacteria.

‘ Shave regularly under your arms. Underarm hair can increase body odour because it traps sweat and bacteria.

‘ Apply tea-tree oil to problem areas, as long as it doesn’t irritate your skin. This oil, from an Australian tree, kills bacteria and also has a pleasant scent.

‘ Essential oils of lavender, pine and peppermint fight bacteria. They also smell nice. Since some people have a skin reaction to certain oils, test the underarm area or a small patch of skin before using.

‘ Delightfully fragrant, sage can fight bacteria and reduce perspiration. You can purchase a solution of sage tincture or diluted sage oil, or brew some sage tea that you cool and store in a bottle. Any of these liquids can be used in the underarm area, but not around the genitals. And after using sage, wash your hands before touching your face.

‘ A citrus fruit like lemon changes the pH level of your skin, making it more acidic. All bacteria, including the odour-causing kinds, have a hard time surviving in a highly acidic environment. Just rub on some lemon and pat dry.

Eat the right foods to counteract body odour

‘ Eat plenty of spinach, chard and kale. Green, leafy vegetables are rich in chlorophyll, which has a powerful deodorizing effect in your body.

‘ Have a few sprigs of parsley, credited with anti-odour properties. Or make parsley tea by steeping a teaspoon of chopped fresh parsley in a cup of boiling water for five minutes. Let it cool a bit before you drink it.

‘ Try wheatgrass juice, sold in health-food stores. Warning: It has a very strong taste, and some people feel nauseated the first time they try it. You might want to start with just 2 Tbsp (30 mL) of wheatgrass juice in 3/4 cup (200 mL) of water, then increase the proportion of juice in subsequent tastings. On first tasting, it’s wise to try this drink on an empty stomach just in case your stomach overreacts.

‘ Buy tablets containing chlorophyll. Many brands are available, made from plants like kelp, barley grass, and blue-green algae. Check the label for the dosage recommendation.

When to see your doctor

If you’re sweating frequently or heavily, you could have an overactive thyroid gland, low blood sugar or a problem with the part of the nervous system that controls sweating. If you think you’re sweating too much or you may have a medical condition causing your body odour, see your doctor. And if you’re taking a prescription medication that might be contributing to excessive odour, ask your doctor about switching to another drug.

DIY deodorant

Has anyone made DIY deodorant before? I haven’t before today but I know I am never going back to buying store bought.

This DIY deodorant recipe is the best thing ever. I think I have just discovered a gold mind. I have stopped using deodorant for a while, even though I used to purchase brands without aluminum and paragons I didn’t feel like using them any longer. I am trying to rely on natural products as much as possible and stores bought deodorants are nothing but natural.

Cosmetics, including deodorants, shampoos, clothes detergents etc contain an array of toxic ingredients. While I have purchased several brands in the past, I think making my own is way better, especially given the fact that products are becoming more and more disruptive to our environment and ourselves.

If you like here is a list of other DIY household items I have made in the past.

I am extremely pleased with this DIY deodorant recipe. I am a person that tends to sweat a lot, especially while working out. I have never found a deodorant that would work completely and after making my own I know this will be my deodorant for years to come.

Findings about using this natural deodorant:

  1. It does not stop perspiration, but you really don’t want that to happen as perspiration gets rid off toxins. It is a natural body process. However, perspiration is blocked by using harmful, toxic ingredients which is exactly what regular store bought deodorants have.
  2. It works agains body odor. That is the best thing I have found about this deodorant.
  3. Does not stain clothes.
  4. You can make your own variations. I have heard that a mixture of tea tree oil, which is antibacterial, and citrus oils like lemon works rather well. For a more masculine scent you can use a mixture of tea tree, cedarwood, eucalyptus or sage. Sage is my favorite.
  5. In the summer this deodorant will have to be kept in the refrigerator given that with temperatures above 72F this deodorant may melt. It is due to the coconut oil. Right now it is in my bathroom cabinet, come summer it will have to go to the refrigerator.

I am going to try different essential oils. This time around I used Jasmine, which I love the scent off. Next time I might use a little bit of tea tree oil, which is antibacterial, mixed in with some lavender.

I hope you get to try this DIY deodorant. It is super easy to make and much better than store bought, I promise.

Here you can see the mixture. Just pour it into your deodorant containers and let it sit in your refrigerator until set. If outside temperature is not above 72 degrees Fahrenheit you can store it in your bathroom. I am doing that now but come summer it will have to be stored in the refrigerator due to the coconut oil melting.

I saved and reused a couple of old deodorant containers however you can still buy some if you like. I also used jasmine essential oil but you can use any of your choice. I will use lavender next time.

Yield: 2 deodorant containers

Total Time:10 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 1/4 cup arrowroot powder, or cornstarch
  • 1/4 cup baking soda
  • 5 tbsp coconut oil, melted
  • 15-20 drops jasmine essential oil, lavender will work well too

Directions:

Place the coconut oil in a safe microwave bowl and melt. This will take 1-2 minutes. Add the rest of the ingredients and with a wire whisk mix well. Pour contents in your deodorant containers and place in the refrigerator until it has solidify. About 1-2 hours.

If outside temperature does not reach about 72 degrees Fahrenheit the deodorant won’t melt. Right now I am keeping mine in my bathroom cabinet since it is winter. Come summer, I will probably have to store in the fridge.

    I use the Cedarwood one. It’s good, Propanediol based but it’s USDA with Arrowroot, yeast and salt soap. Sounds weird but I did my research and its one of the best ones, its very mild. I haven’t had any issues and I have sensitive skin. It doesn’t smell very much which is great actually! It’s just such a pain in the ass to find. No regular store carries it and Whole Foods doesn’t carry it either. Only Sprouts, sometimes. And when they do they have one or two but only the Tea Tree kind not the Cedarwood. I wish it was easier to get and at $9 for a 2.5 oz/72 grams its one of the most expensive ones but I don’t mind cause its safe for me

    The headline says it all. I’ve never used any deodorant that prevents odor as well as this. I’m talking 10 mile runs in 80 degree weather without smelling bad!

    I’ve tried so many (Tom’s, Health Ranger Tea Tree, etc.) that have not been at all satisfactory. By the end of the day, they all are not working…
    This particular one (Tea Tree & Basil) works great for me.
    It has given me all day protection in my first 3 days of use.
    Very happy to have discovered this one.

Refrigerator or Bathroom

The mixture can be refrigerated if you would prefer to apply it as a solid. That is probably the best solution if you’re hoping to use it in a deodorant stick container. However that makes it more difficult for travel. I prefer to keep it on the container in the bathroom where I get ready in the morning. Sometimes it’s solid and sometimes it melts, but it can be applied either way.

How to Apply and Use Homemade Deodorant

If the mixture is solidified in a deodorant stick, then you can apply as you might store-bought deodorant. You could also use a q-tip or some other “scoop.”
I use my finger to scoop a little out (just enough to cover the tip of my pointer finger), then spread it between my finger tips on both hands and apply it to my underarms. This is enough to last all day. I reapply if I’m about to go work out, or have been outside sweating in the heat a lot. I did this with my antiperspirant too, so no change there.

Does Homemade Deodorant Work?

Yes, it works! This recipe is great.
The small amount shown above is all I use at the start of each day. I reapply if I’m about to go work out, or have been outside sweating in the heat a lot. Although, I did this with my antiperspirant too, so no change there.
One important thing to remember is there will be some adjustment if you’re switching from an antiperspirant to this homemade recipe–because this isn’t an antiperspirant! You will sweat with this deodorant, and that’s a bit of a transition if you’re used to not sweating when using a store-bought antiperspirant.
If you’ve been using a store-bought regular deodorant, then this should work similar to that.
Like a normal stick deodorant, it can be prone to get white marks on dark clothing. To avoid this, don’t use too much and thoroughly work mixture into the skin (like shown in photo above) before putting on clothes. If white does show up on clothing, just a little water will get it off.

Why Tea Tree Essential Oil?

You are not limited to tea tree essential oil. That happened to be what I had on hand. (I found this one on clearance at The Body Shop. You can also find essential oil options on Amazon if you can’t find them locally.) I love the fresh smell of tea tree, and it blends nice with the tea tree soap we get from Trader Joe’s.
Its antiviral, antibacterial, antifungal, and antiseptic qualities also add medical benefits and help this mixture’s effectiveness as a deodorant.
There are lots of other essential oils that could be used (lavender or grapefruit to name a couple). Just do your research and make sure the one you choose is safe to use on skin (i.e, bergamot has a delicious citrus smell but shouldn’t be used on skin that will be exposed to sunlight) and that you don’t use too much.

5 Hacks that help keep Summers Odourless

Summers should not equate to Smelly Armpits. The joy of wearing tank tops, cold shoulders, and all things sleeveless must not be dampened by your sweat glands. The sweat glands do not produce odour, it is often the bacteria and other microbes that make you smell foul. This bad microbiome breaks down the neutral sweat into thioalcohol molecules that smell like meat, onions, sulfur, etc… The solution lies in killing the bacteria and not letting it grow, rather than suppressing or clogging the sweat glands with antiperspirants and deodorants. Here are 5 natural hacks to stop the odour from spoiling your mood and confidence:
1. ACV

Apple Cider Vinegar is a potent natural antimicrobial solution for smelly armpits. The antimicrobial properties of ACV work directly on the bacterium dwelling in your underarms. A daily application after the morning and evening bath can produce effective results in less than 2 weeks time. You will sweat, but not smell.
2. Iodine Solution
Iodine Solution is yet another answer to your stinky underarm woes. The antiseptic properties cull the microbiota dwelling in your armpits. Apply the iodine solution in your armpits once daily and exfoliate gently with a soft bristles brush. Leave it for 3 minutes and then rinse.
3. Tea Tree Oil
If you like the fresh feeling tea tree oil renders, then make your own tea tree oil spray by combining a few drops of tea tree oil with fresh water. Tea tree oil fights microbes and has astringent properties that act well on bacteria and doesn’t let it grow.
4. Lemon Juice
Fresh lemon juice is another natural scent that will not only work on the bacteria but will also lighten your armpits. Lemons maintain the pH balance of your skin. Just take a lemon half and scrub it on your underarms for about 3 to 4 minutes. Leave it for another 5 minutes and take a bath. However, if you have sensitive skin, then pour the lemon juice and dilute it with cold water and apply it with a cotton swab to avoid irritation.
5. Coconut Oil
Lastly, the mighty coconut oil is a great natural antimicrobial therapy for underarms and the v region. It kills the bacteria, restores the pH and makes your underarms feather smooth. Just apply some coconut oil every night on your underarms before retiring for the day.
