Research published in the Journal of Nutrition found that a zinc deficiency in rats led to impairments in DNA repair caused by free radicals, which can speed the aging process.

Of course, these findings don’t necessarily translate from rats to humans, but it does encourage further study. Especially since a review published in Pathobiology of Aging & Age-Related Diseases concluded that, while the current evidence on zinc’s efficacy is limited, what is available looks promising.

Also referred to as CoQ10, this antioxidant compound — which the body naturally produces to help convert food into energy — has some science that suggests it may help reduce wrinkles and improve the texture of the skin, Dr. Skotnicki says. For example, a 2018 medical review published in the journal Frontiers in Physiology found CoQ10 supplements may alleviate age-related issues, including an increase in oxidative stress (damage in the tissues and cells caused by the environment) brought on by a CoQ10 deficiency. A small study published in BioJournals also had 33 adults take a daily supplement for 12 weeks (either 50mg or 150mg), resulting in “significantly reduced wrinkles” and an improvement in skin smoothness.
Suggested serving: There isn’t currently an established recommended dietary allowance (RDA) , and not everyone is deficient in CoQ10 so you may not even need to take a supplement. Also, while the Mayo Clinic has labeled this supplement as “generally safe,” there can be potentially harmful side effects, including blood clots, so be sure to talk to your doctor to make sure it’s right for you.

There are two amino acids in the protein collagen — proline and glycine — that are essential for the formation and repair of joints, bones, muscles, and tendons, Dr. Bowe says.

A study published in Skin Pharmacology and Physiology evaluated the effects of collagen peptides on the skin of nearly 70 women, and found that those who consumed between 2.5 and 5 grams of collagen for either four or eight weeks showed a significant improvement in skin elasticity compared to those who took a placebo.

Suggested serving: While the body has the ability to process up to 30 grams of protein every few hours, Dr. Bowe suggests tossing one tablespoon of a collagen powder into a smoothie, coffee, or soup.

The FDA doesn’t regulate supplements, which has led to some extremely shady practices over the years from paying for fake Amazon reviews to selling pills laced with prescription-strength drugs. FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb recently announced that the government agency will be modifying its approach to dietary supplement regulation, but at least for now, you’ll have to do some digging if you want to be aware of what you’re taking and what you’re expecting as a result.

Since supplements are unregulated, some companies sell pills that are completely different from what they say on the label. Check on a company’s website to see if it’s had third-party testing to guarantee that what’s on the label is what’s in the bottle, adds Dr. Cherukuri.

Paying extra for exotic vitamins in skin creams that promise to erase fine lines and prevent wrinkles will get you little more than an empty wallet, according to dermatologists. Although many face creams contain vitamins known as antioxidants, very few are actually effective in preventing or reversing skin damage.

“Despite advertising claims, almost all available topical formulations contain very low concentrations of antioxidants that are not well absorbed by the skin,” said Karen E. Burke, MD, in a presentation to the American Academy of Dermatology’s annual meeting this week in New Orleans. “There are three antioxidants that have been proven to decrease the effect of the sun on the skin and actually prevent further damage: selenium, vitamin E, and vitamin C.”

Antioxidants are known to prevent agents called free radicals from damaging cells in the body and the skin. Free radicals are a result of normal body processes, but they can also be created by exposure to various environmental factors such as smoking or ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun and can speed up the aging process.

Burke says the problem with applying antioxidants to the skin to fight aging is that they aren’t very well absorbed or only have short-term effects. 1. Nicotinamide riboside

One thing you’ll notice with almost all of these recommendations is that they increase how well your mitochondria function — you know, the powerhouses of your cells. Nicotinamide riboside, a form of vitamin B, is a great option to experiment with. It protects your brain from toxins and stress and increases the ratio of two essential compounds called NAD+ and NADH. It gives structure to your skin, bones, muscles, and connective tissue. It reduces wrinkles and improves the elasticity of your skin, and it even helps you at night because it naturally packs a dose of glycine, an amino acid that supports a more restful sleep. You produce less collagen as you age, so you want to eat more of it. Collagen protein has too many benefits to keep it out of your anti-aging supplement stack.

5. Whey protein

Whey protein isn’t just for bodybuilders. It gives your liver all the amino acids it needs to build glutathione, your body’s master antioxidant. Here’s why that’s a major benefit. Glutathione helps your liver neutralize toxins (from your environment, food, and cells) that would have otherwise made you weak. It supports your all-important mitochondria, and it also boosts immunity and brain function.

This list is based on my own experience, and this isn’t to say that all other anti-aging supplements are bogus.
