How to Deal With Excess Hair Growth

Most women have only very fine hair on areas of the skin where men tend to grow thick, dark body hair, such as the upper lip, cheeks, chin, back, chest, and abdomen. But about 8 percent of women have a condition called hirsutism, which causes excess hair growth in those areas. Also called hypertrichosis, having excess hair is at best annoying and at worst embarrassing. Hair removal and bleaching are common treatment options, but there are some medications that can help as well as more permanent methods.

Symptoms and Causes of Excess Hair Growth

Symptoms besides the excess hair growth can help determine if there’s a medical cause for the hirsutism. You may also have:

  • Abnormal menstrual periods or having no period
  • A deep voice
  • Acne
  • Increased muscle mass
  • Decreased breast size

About half of all women with hirsutism have elevated levels of male sex hormones, which are known as androgens. Such increases in women’s androgen levels may be due to:

  • Polycystic ovary syndrome, in which a hormone imbalance causes cysts to form on the ovaries
  • Cushing’s syndrome, which occurs when your body overproduces the hormone cortisol for an extended period
  • Congenital adrenal hyperplasia, a group of disorders that interfere with the adrenal gland and cause the body to produce more androgen
  • Tumors growing in the ovaries and adrenal glands
  • Medications such as steroids, some hormones, and a drug used to treat endometriosis called Danocrine (danazol)

Excess hair growth also can occur if a woman’s hair follicles are unusually sensitive to male hormones, although doctors have not figured out why. In many cases, the exact cause of a woman’s excess hair growth is never figured out.

Are You at Risk for Excess Hair Growth?

There are certain risk factors for hirsutism, including:

  • Genetics — the condition tends to run in some families
  • Race or ethnicity — certain ethnic groups have an increased risk of hirsutism, such as women of Middle Eastern, South Asian, and Mediterranean descent
  • Menopause

Treatments for Excess Hair Growth

Most treatments for excess hair growth involve short- or long-term hair removal methods:

  • Shaving. This is a safe and easy method, but you will have stubble if you don’t shave regularly. Also, the hair may tend to look thicker as it regrows.
  • Waxing or plucking. You can use tweezers to pluck individual hairs or try waxing to remove larger patches. These are safe and inexpensive methods, but they can be painful and there might be some skin irritation.
  • Depilatories. Chemical creams can remove hair from the body, but they may irritate the skin. Always test any new depilatory on your wrist one day before you intend to use it to make sure you don’t have an adverse reaction.
  • Electrolysis. This method burns away hair permanently using a small electrical current delivered into the hair follicle through a needle. Electrolysis tends to be expensive and takes a lot of time because only a limited amount can be done in one session.
  • Laser hair removal. A laser beam is used to damage the hair follicle, causing the hair to fall out. Like electrolysis, this is a time-consuming and expensive procedure. Unlike electrolysis, the hair might end up growing back.

Electrolysis and laser hair removal should only be performed by licensed professionals, such as a cosmetologist, aesthetician, or electrologist.

Rather than remove it, some women choose to bleach excess hair with a cream or paste. Bleaching ingredients can cause skin irritation and, depending on how thick the hair is, might not give you results that are as satisfying as actually getting rid of the hair.

Medications That Treat Excess Hair Growth

There are some medications that will help control excess hair growth:

  • Birth control pills can reduce androgen production.
  • Anti-androgen medications like Aldactone (spironolactone) and Proscar (finasteride) block androgenic hormones’ ability to affect the body, but may take between three and six months to work. They can cause birth defects if you become pregnant, so you must practice effective birth control while taking them.
  • Vaniqa (eflornithine) is a prescription cream that can be used to slow hair growth, although it does not get rid of existing hair. It can be used on the skin of your face and chin.

Tweezing or threading. There are different ways to pluck hair out at the root. You can use tweezers. Or you can hire someone to “thread” — use a long, tight strand to loop around and remove each unwanted hair. These methods can cause pain and redness.

Waxing. A quick way to remove lots of unwanted hair by the root is with melted wax. Often you get this done in a salon. Wax is applied to the skin, then removed quickly. It can cause pain and redness.

Ditch your parlour-based chemical bleaching routine for this traditional trick to get rid of excess facial growth. Sugar when warmed sticks to the hair, and after it dries, you can rip the hair off (as you pull the mask) causing no damage to the skin, Sugar only sticks to your hair and not the skin. Lemon, on the other hand, works as a natural bleaching agent and bleaches the rest of the hair while lightning the skin tone. For this home-made remedy for facial hair, you need to take a mixture of 2 tablespoons of sugar, a pinch of fresh lime juice(about 2 teaspoons), and a 9-10 teaspoons of water. Heat the mixture, and set it aside to cool down a bit.

Unlike wax, you don’t need to heat the mixture in very high temperatures; sugar gets heated soon thus causes much less discomfort than wax. Then start applying the paste on the affected areas and let it dry. Let it sit for about 15-20 minutes. Rinse it off with cold water. Do this at least 3 to 4 times a week for best results.

3. Lemon And Honey

Looking for home remedy for dry skin and excessive facial hair growth? This home-made waxing alternative should work wonders for you. Take a bowl, and mix about 2 tablespoons of sugar, 1 tablespoon of organic honey, 2 teaspoons of lemon juice, and heat the mixture until it becomes paste like. You can also thin the mixture by adding water if it tends to become too sticky. Keep the mixture aside for cooling. Take the paste and apply it on the affected areas. Grab a waxing strip and pull the hair out in opposite direction. This natural wax is far less hazardous to your skin than the chemical-based ones. Also, the moisturising properties for honey helps restore the water retention in your skin and stimulates sunbum production.

4. Potato and Lentil
Apart from removing unwanted hair, potatoes have several other skin benefits too. The catecholase component of potatoes helps lighten and brighten your skin. For this mask, you would need yellow lentil soaked overnight, a potato, a teaspoon of honey and a pinch of lime juice. Grab a bowl and mash the potato, and extract its juice. Simultaneously, drain the water in which the lentils were soaked and grind the lentils until you acquire a smooth paste. Add the potato juice, honey and lemon to this paste. While the remedy is suitable for all skin types, those who are allergic to raw potatoes should keep away from trying this on, as it’ll lead to allergic reactions. A patch test before applying the paste, is recommended in such case.

5. Papaya and Turmeric
The star bio-active enzyme found in papaya called ‘papain’, enlarges the hair follicle which inhibits the excess hair growth on your skin. Papaya also helps naturally exfoliating the skin, by removing the dead cells. The traditional remedy for majority of skin problems turmeric further helps exfoliate and brighten the skin.

So what do you need to do? Just peel the raw papaya and cut it into small pieces, grind them into a fine paste. Add a tablespoon of turmeric powder to the paste. I don’t know, but what I do know is we want our hair below our hairline to be ladylike and we want the hair on our head to be lioness-like. The issue is that your hormones can make this situation can be more scary-hairy than lady godiva-esque. As a former sufferer of PCOS, I know what it’s like to feel like you’re always getting waxed and always brushing out too much hair. I want to share my secrets for maintaining my locks over the years and why I’m not freaking out about the post-partum hair fall.

Whether you’re dealing with hair loss from your head or overgrowth of unwanted hair on your face and body, I’m going to explain why this is happening and how to fix it, without using strong side effect-laden prescription medications.

At a time when we are bombarded with pop stars hairy armpits on one side plus pressure to stay entirely hairless from head to toe on the other, it can be hard to maintain a good perspective when it comes to our own naturally hair-covered bodies. The occasional stray hair somewhere unexpected or a day or two of more hair in your hair brush than normal is no reason to freak out. However, it can be very distressing to experience rapid hair loss from the head or unwanted hair growth on your face. This is not to be taken lightly, as I know it can cause anxiety, depression and low self-esteem.

The good news is the root cause of both of these issues is the same and so is the natural treatment protocol – so wherever you are on the hair loss to hirsutism spectrum I have the answer for you.

The roots of hair loss and hirsutism

The root cause of overgrowth of unwanted hair or hair loss from the head is your sensitivity to testosterone plus the amount of testosterone your body is producing. Usually these are not stand-alone problems and you will also find you are simultaneously dealing with problematic menstrual periods.

Hair loss

How: Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) is a derivative of testosterone. Testosterone converts to DHT with the help of the enzyme Type II 5-alpha reductase, which is held in your hair follicle’s oil glands. Hair loss from the head is triggered by the level of DHT binding to receptors in scalp follicles. DHT shrinks your hair follicles, making it more difficult for healthy hair to survive. High levels of DHT can be provoked by estrogen dominance and high cortisol levels from the adrenal glands.

Why: This hormonal imbalance in the body can be brought on by use of the birth control pill and other hormonal contraceptives like the Mirena IUD, hormonal shifts in pregnancy, the post-partum period, perimenopause or as a part of poor thyroid function.

Hirsutism

How: You don’t have to have PCOS to be suffering with hirsutism, but it is one of the common consequences of that hormonal health problem. Excessive growth of coarse hairs is also caused by testosterone overproduction and conversion. It is one of the most common endocrine health issues with approximately 10% of women experiencing this at some time in their lives. The kind of hair produced is called “terminal” and is different in thickness and feel. Growth is caused by the level and duration of exposure to dihydrotestosterone, the alpha-reductase enzyme activity on the hormone, and the sensitivity of your hair follicles to dihydrotestosterone, which determines whether regular fine body hair (or vellus hair) becomes terminal hair.

Why: PCOS is certainly a common root cause, but also behind this issue can be Cushing’s syndrome, genetic conditions that cause overproduction of cortisol and testosterone, some medications such as those used to treat endometriosis, and obesity.

Natural treatment protocol

In the short term – it’s better to go with frequent waxing or laser hair removal than using chemical products like Nair on your excessive hair growth as sensitive areas tend to be the most open to absorbing nasty chemicals. Castor oil treatments are highly praised for encouraging thick, strong, glossy head hair regrowth.

In the long term – Using a combination of these foods and supplements on a daily basis should show improvement of your hair loss or hirsutism in a matter of months. Stick with this protocol for at least six months before looking for another solution.

  1. Stinging nettle in the form of nettle leaf tea
  2. Omega 3 fatty acids from egg yolks and salmon
  3. Saw palmetto herbal supplements
