How Long Do Raspberry Ketones Take To Work?

Losing unwanted body fat is a common dream which most of you have almost every day. However, very few of you can actually fulfill the dream of getting back in your old jeans. Shedding excess body weight is very simple if you have the determination and the will power of achieving your health goals.

All you need is a regular exercise routine, a well-balanced diet chart, and the urgency from within of leading a disciplined lifestyle. Along with a proper diet, you can also have a good quality health drink that can boost the rate at which your body loses weight. Most commonly suggested health drink in this segment is raspberry ketones.

According to several researches and clinical trials, it has been determined that if you can consume a premium-quality raspberry ketones every day, it can show you great and faster results when it comes to losing weight. If you combine it with regular workouts and a well-balanced diet plan the result can be almost 3 times the normal rate at which your body loses weight.

Most of you may have heard about a ketogenic health supplement named as raspberry ketones. But how many of you know what it basically in in real life? Raspberry ketones are natural substances which provide raspberries with their powerful and natural aroma. Other fruits which also have the same substance are cranberries, kiwis, and blackberries.

Raspberry ketones have long been used in cosmetics and are also used in ice creams, soft drinks, and various other processed foods. It was just recently that raspberry ketones gained immense popularity as a weight loss health supplement. Although it is named as raspberry ketones, it is not extracted from raspberries at all. Extracting ketones from raspberries will result in heavy expenses since a single dose of ketones come from as many as 41kgs of raspberries.

How Long Does It Take For Raspberry Ketones To Work?

Most of you may wonder about the time taken by raspberry ketones to show its magic. Well, this basically depends upon several factors. These factors play a major role when it comes to the speed at which each individual burn fat and calories in order to shed excess body weight.

  1. Heredity: When it comes to any physical change, your heredity and genetics play a major role. This is also true when you decide to lose unwanted body fat. There are some people, who are naturally born with a high metabolism rate. As a result of this, they can easily burn more calories irrespective of their activity pattern. Even if these people are at rest, their body continue to shed weight. On the other hand, there are some who simply cannot shed weight at a fast pace no matter what they do. This is, again, based on their heredity.
  2. Gender: It is a known fact that women tend to lose weight at a slower rate than men. This is simply because women bodies are designed to carry infants and give birth. The overall hormonal makeup in a woman’s body is completely different than a man’s body. The need to have excess fat is quite important for their body in order to bear children. Comparatively, men have less body fat than women. The presence of testosterone in men helps them to have more muscle mass and also have less body fat. This is why women face a stiff challenge when it comes to weight loss than men.
  3. Age: When it comes to shedding excess weight, your age also plays a major role. It is very simple to understand that as you age, the natural metabolism of your body takes a backseat. Naturally, as the metabolism rate of your body decreases, your body will shed weight at a lower speed. With age, your natural body system do not work at their optimum level. This is why when you decide to shed weight at a younger age, you see faster and better results.
  4. Initial Weight: Another factor that determines the rate at which raspberry ketones work is your initial body weight. It is usually seen that if you weigh a lot when you start your daily intake of raspberry ketones, your rate of losing weight will be higher during the initial stages. In order to maintain a higher weight, your body demands a higher percentage of calorie. Once you start consuming raspberry ketones, your metabolism increases and your natural appetite gets suppressed. As a result of this, your body tends to shed more weight during the first few weeks.
  5. Quality of the Supplement: There are various types of raspberry ketones available in the market. However, in order to get better and faster results, you need to have a supplement which is of good quality. The supplement quality also plays a vital role in the rate at which your body burns excess fat. Without the necessary purity and quality, your raspberry ketone will fail to perform at its optimum level. A supplement which comes with 100% natural ingredients will give you the desired results by blocking fat from accumulating, burning more fat, boosting your metabolism in a natural manner, controlling your appetite, and increasing your energy levels naturally.

How Do Raspberry Ketones Work?

The primary reason behind researchers becoming interested in raspberry ketones is because of the molecular structure of the substance. These molecules were quite similar to capsaicin and synephrine. The former is usually found in chili pepper and the latter is basically a stimulant. Both the molecules can boost your natural metabolism. Thus, it was speculated that the molecules found in raspberry ketones will also help to boost metabolism. Upon further research it was determined that it helped to increase lipolysis which is breaking down of fat. It also gave rise to adiponectin, which is a hormone that helps to regulate both blood sugar levels and your natural metabolism.

Other Health Benefits Of Raspberry Ketones

  1. Increase Hair Growth: When raspberry ketones are used topically, it helps to increase hair growth in people who have suffered from hair fall.
  2. Improve Skin Elasticity: It has also been seen that raspberry ketones help to improve the skin elasticity in healthy women.

There are many people who have tried raspberry ketones and have witnessed great results within a few weeks of starting the supplement. The common thing amongst all the users is the lack of appetite as the starting point. Most have even stated that they felt a lack of appetite almost immediately of starting their supplements. Gradually they felt a rise in their energy levels which lasted an entire day.

There are also several celebrities such as Lauren Goodger, Scarlett Moffat, Holly Willoughby, and Dawn French who have also tried raspberry ketones and have enjoyed the results of the health supplement. If you also wish to try raspberry ketones to lose excess body weight, it is very important that you choose such a product which is tried and tested by many users with successful results. Always remember that if the quality of the supplement is not good, it will not give you proper results and leave you disheartened.

Raspberry Ketones

What Is It?

Raspberry Ketones are compounds contained within Raspberries and are responsible for providing the sweet flavour and aroma of this fruit, often used for their flavouring and aromatic qualities.

Raspberry Ketones contain a substance very similar to Synephrine, which is known for its effect on metabolism and for enhancing fat loss. It has become popularised due to its feature within many Fat Loss Supplements.

What Does It Do?

Raspberry Ketones helps to increase your metabolic rate, and there enhance your rate of fat loss. In particular, it stimulates the release of Adrenaline and Noradrenaline, which in turn assist the suppression of appetite and support your body to break down stored body fat efficiently.

Combined with a sensible diet and workout regime, Raspberry Ketones will help you reduce stored body fat.

Unlike Caffeine and other Stimulants available and used by those seeking to lose weight, Raspberry Ketones have minimal effect on heart rate and blood pressure, so are a great alternative for those sensitive to Stimulants or looking to avoid caffeine.

When Do I Take It?

To take advantage of the metabolic and fat metabolising properties of Raspberry Ketones, they are best taken before your first meal of the day and 15 – 30 minutes before exercise. Raspberry Ketones are usually found in powdered form and can be mixed with water or with any other supplement, such as a quality Pre Workout or in addition to your current Fat Burner. The most efficacious dose has been shown to be 100-500mg per day.

How Long Does It Take To Work?

Raspberry Ketones start to work as soon as they enter the bloodstream, which is typically 15 – 30 minutes after consumption. Users may notice an increase in their body temperature and the suppression of their appetite within this timeframe. Consistent use in conjunction with a sensible diet and workout regime will see reduction in stored body fat within the first 4-6 weeks of use.

How Much Does It Cost?

Raspberry Ketones, when sold in pure supplement form, range anywhere from $15 per 100g, right up to $40 per 100g, depending on the size and quality of the product. Based on an average price of $30 per 100g, and based on one 500mg serve per day, supplementing with Raspberry Ketones will typically cost around $5 per month.

Alternatively, the average price per serve of a Fat Burner which contains the efficacious dose of Raspberry Ketones ranges between $2 – $3. Based on the average price of $2.50, supplementing with a Fat Burner each day will typically cost around $75 per month. Fat Burners contain a broad spectrum of additional ingredients shown to boost your metabolism and utilise body fat as fuel.

What Are The Top Products?

We recommend Platinum Labs OptiBurn and EHPLabs Oxyshred; both of which contain Raspberry Ketones in a high dose, and are amongst some of the most popular Fat Burner supplements on the market.

Dr. Oz’s ‘Miracle Fat Burner’ Raspberry Ketone: Does It Work?

THURSDAY, Feb. 9, 2012 — When surgeon, author, and host of The Dr. Oz Show Mehmet Oz speaks, the diet community listens.

So when Dr. Oz did a segment Monday about dietary supplement raspberry ketone, it left us wanting to know more about what it is, what it does — and whether it’s safe.

On the show, Dr. Oz touted over-the-counter raspberry ketone supplements as a “miracle fat-burner in a bottle.” More specifically, ketone supplements are concentrated doses of the chemical in raspberries that causes their distinct aroma. The substance has been approved by the FDA as “generally safe” since 1965, but ketones are experiencing a surge in popularity thanks to several recent studies analyzing their ability to burn stored fat. Research in both mice and humans have confirmed the all-natural supplement’s fat-burning powers, though many experts regard the data as preliminary, and suggest that people who want to lose weight should stick to good ole diet and exercise.

On Dr. Oz, weight-loss expert Lisa Lynn explained how the product has helped many of her clients break through weight-loss plateaus when used in conjunction with a healthy diet and daily exercise. She recommends taking 100 or 200 mg supplements of ketone with breakfast and lunch daily, which she says is the chemical equivalent of about 90 pounds of fresh raspberries.

“ your body metabolically will go in the direction you want it to go in,” Dr. Oz said on the show. “I’m hoping this will get you over the hump to weight loss, and you use it for that purpose, not as a miracle pill.”

Still, not everyone is as on-board with raspberry ketone as Dr. Oz. Diets in Review pharmacist Dr. Sarah G. Kahn says ketones work by regulating the body’s release of norepinephrine, which causes a body-temperature spike and increase in metabolism. However, she cautions, it might not be safe for people with certain health conditions.

“I would not recommend this product to diabetics without speaking to their doctor because of the risk of blood sugar fluctuations,” she says. “People who have heart issues or high blood pressure would also not be good candidates for raspberry ketones because norepinephrine can have effects on blood pressure and heart rate. This may also have an effect on people who have COPD or asthma conditions and may make their conditions worse.”

What to know about raspberry ketones

Health food and supplement manufacturers claim that raspberry ketones can improve health, but the research behind these health claims remains limited.

Below, we discuss some potential uses for raspberry ketones and explain the science behind each use.

Weight loss

Share on PinterestSome people believe that raspberry ketones aid weight loss.

A popular health claim is that raspberry ketones can cause weight loss. However, the scientific evidence supporting this claim is weak. The most effective way to lose weight is to consume fewer calories than the body uses and to do more exercise.

Learn more about successful weight loss strategies here.

What the research says

Research on rats suggests that eating large quantities of raspberry ketones may cause rats to lose weight. Raspberry ketones are structurally similar to capsaicin, a chemical in some peppers, and synephrine, a compound in oranges. Both capsaicin and synephrine may support fat loss.

A 2016 study that the National Processed Raspberry Council sponsored found that ketones might not be the only way that raspberries can support weight loss. The findings suggest that eating a wide variety of raspberry products, including raspberry juice, could slow weight gain in mice.

While this animal research is promising, data on animals are not always applicable to humans. No clinical trials on humans have found that raspberry ketones can cause weight loss. Scientists need to research this further.

Other research in animals undermines the idea that ketones cause weight loss. A 2017 study on mice that ate a high fat diet found that raspberry ketones could reduce appetite. However, raspberry ketones did not directly lead to weight loss by causing the body to burn more fat.

Do raspberry ketones trigger ketosis?

It is important to note that raspberry ketones have nothing to do with ketosis or the ketogenic diet. In a state of ketosis, the body burns fat for energy rather than glucose.

Ketosis is a process that happens in the body. Taking raspberry ketones will not trigger ketosis or support a keto diet.

Learn more about ketosis here.

Liver disease

Diets that are very high in fat can cause a condition called nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. The findings of a 2012 animal study suggest that raspberry ketones may reduce the risk of this disease in rats who eat a high fat diet.

However, as with other research on animals, it is not necessarily the case that the results are applicable to humans.

Share on PinterestRaspberry ketones may help in reducing the risk of diabetes.

Eating raspberries may reduce chronic inflammation, which experts believe to play a role in the development of numerous health conditions.

By reducing inflammation, raspberries may also lower the risk of:

  • diabetes
  • cardiovascular disease
  • cancer
  • arthritis

One study found that red raspberries reduced swelling and other symptoms of arthritis in rats with this condition, but there is a need for more studies to investigate this effect. Scientists are yet to research the link between inflammation and raspberry ketones in humans.

Dementia and brain health

Dementia is a complex brain disease that doctors still do not fully understand. Some evidence suggests that inflammation may play a role. As raspberry ketones may reduce inflammation, they might also lower the risk of dementia.

No studies have directly assessed the role of raspberries or raspberry ketones in humans who have dementia or have a higher risk of developing it. However, scientists have found links between raspberries and Alzheimer’s disease.

Some research has looked at how ellagic acid, a phytochemical in raspberries, affects the formation of amyloid plaques.

People with Alzheimer’s typically have these plaques in their brains, and the plaques get worse as the disease progresses.

The study showed that ellagic acid might slow the development of plaques. If this is the case, eating whole raspberries may be more beneficial than taking raspberry ketones as a supplement. However, more research is necessary to confirm this potential benefit.

Ask the Diva: Are Raspberry Ketones Safe?

Good question! For those who haven’t yet heard of them, raspberry ketones are the latest weight loss fad.

The evidence on raspberry ketones as a weight loss aid is limited to one or two small studies done in test tubes and on rats, showing that ketones increased fat-burning metabolism. Although anecdotal testimony abounds, no scientific trials have been conducted in humans. Not surprisingly, those hawking raspberry ketones note that they work best when used in conjunction with exercise and a reduced calorie diet. Hmmm.

As for safety, raspberry ketones have been used as a flavoring agent in food manufacturing for years and have GRAS status (generally recognized as safe). Unfortunately, we don’t know very much about the short or long-term effects of using raspberry ketones as a dietary supplement, which involves much higher dosages than are used in food manufacturing.

Chemically, raspberry ketones resemble ephedrine–the stuff that’s kept behind the pharmacist’s counter to prevent its being used to produce methamphetamine. People with high blood pressure, diabetes, kidney disease, anxiety disorders, or who are pregnant or on asthma medicine are advised to avoid medications containing ephedrine or pseudoephedrine. If you’re in that category, I’d strongly advise that you avoid raspberry ketones as well.

Bottom line: The alleged benefits of raspberry ketones are too small to warrant either the cost or the unknown risks and side effects.

Most plants contain a molecule or substance called raspberry ketones, which is responsible for giving them their sweet aroma. These plants include : red raspberries, kiwifruit, peaches, grapes, apples, other berries, as well as vegetables such as; rhubarb, the bark of yew, maple, and pine trees.

Here is everything you need to know before buying Rasberry Ketone supplement :

What is Raspberry Ketones

Raspberry ketone has gained popularity with so many companies where they are extracted from any of these fruits and vegetables for various purposes ranging from weight loss, cosmetic use like the perfumery and lotions, etc., flavoring agent like in soft drinks and ice creams, sweets etc.

Some reviews say confirms how expensive it is to extract raspberry ketones from plants where a single dose of raspberry ketone require over 41 kg of plants.

It is on that note that most companies opt for using a synthesized raspberry ketone instead of the natural form.

Thus, laboratories synthesize raspberry ketones for commercial purposes in order to save costs companies resort to the latter. As such the synthesized product will still exhibit the flavors and the sweet aroma found in the natural raspberry ketone.

Some active ingredient found in Raspberry Ketones

The raspberry ketone diet pills gained its popularity in 2012 when it was talked about on Dr. Oz television show which was discussing raspberry ketones and the guests were singing praises on how the product has worked miracles in curbing obesity.

Moreover, in studies conducted on rats and on cells grown in laboratories, Raspberry ketones supplement was found to increase the oxidation of fatty acid thereby stimulating adiponectin, a hormone which reduce appetite and also speed up the rate at which the body burn fat. The adiponectin hormone is also known to suppress appetite.

Adiponectin hormone

The normal body weight is associated with high levels of adiponectin and as such overweight and obese people are said to have lower levels of this hormone which further predisposes them to; obesity, type 2 diabetes, fatty liver disease and even heart disease.

Thus, aiming to elevate adiponectin will not only help people lose the unwanted weight, it will also prevent and reduce the risk of many diseases. Having the ability to increase adiponectin is an added advantage for raspberry ketone supplement.

Furthermore, the adiponectin in the Raspberry ketones has abilities to boost one’s metabolism, and thus converts the body fats into essential energy after burning it and when that happens a person get to lose weight as the process whereby a body stores fat leading to weight gain gets interrupted. (source)

However, people consuming these pills will still need to adopt a healthier lifestyles (exercise) and good eating habits (avoid eating junk) for them to see the results faster.

Garcinia Cambogia

The supplement also has a fat blocker called Garcinia Cambogia as an active ingredient which is useful in the inhibition of Citrate Lyase enzyme which means the body will no longer make and store fat after the body get food.

Also, people who use raspberry ketone supplements are not prone to depression, mood swings and short temper which are the most common side effects suffered by most weight loss supplements users.

This is because the Citrate Lyase enzyme is known to elevate the level of the Serotonin hormone enabling users of raspberry ketones users to do it with ease.

Furthermore, the two active ingredients on the supplement pills marry very well, where consumers taking the pill have their bodies blocking the formation of fat (Garcinia Cambogia) as well as having the fat consumed from food converted into essential energy (Raspberry ketone) for body use with little to no fat storage.

Raspberry Ketones are good for you

The raspberry ketones supplement pills are extracted from natural sources; it was NOT synthesized from the laboratories. The product is free from, additives, binders, fillers and artificial ingredients and as such the product passed when tested against the monographs in USP/NF for standardization.

One review has shown that people who combined 200 mg of raspberry ketone supplement with 1200 mg of vitamin C daily for 4 weeks were found to have lost a significant amount of body fat and weight.

Regrettably, the study s reliability is flawed because Improper scientific methods were used to conduct the study and the results therefore are not to be trusted. Moreover, the findings do not show if the weight loss was the result of raspberry ketones alone, vitamin C alone or the combination of both.

Known Advantages of Raspberry Ketones Supplement

  • Increase metabolism and encourage the body to burn fat instead of storing fat
  • Ability to turn fat into energy using the enzyme lipase.
  • Makes you feel full for longer times thus suppressing appetite. So, it curbs hunger
  • Pure product from natural compound
  • Manufactures in a United State food and Drug Administration (USFDA) and cGMP Certified Manufacturing Facility.
  • The pill is easy to swallow as it is in Rapid Release Capsule Form and thus get absorbed faster.

Disadvantages of Raspberry Ketones Supplement

  • Very little scientific studies are conducted to prove the product effectiveness.
  • There is no consistency of research findings on the effectiveness pf the product, this is somewhat misleading.
  • All supplements are not regulated by the FDA and so consumers take them at their own risk. And some of the supplements are harmful to human health.

Raspberry Ketone‘s various Effectiveness Levels

Since there is no regulation on herbs and dietary supplements like with prescription drugs, the only way to ascertain that the product is effective and safe is by reviewing some evidence-based scientific medical literature :

  • EFFECTIVE: a rigorous scientific review was conducted on the Raspberry ketones supplement and the product passed
  • LIKELY EFFECTIVE: the product has endorsements from at least two scientific rigorous studies which are highly reputable, that tested it on hundreds of humans. Such studies published that Raspberry Ketone supplement is likely to work for weight loss purposes.
  • POSSIBLY EFFECTIVE: another study conducted in humans suggested that the product has the ability to work in assisting people to lose weight.
  • POSSIBLY INEFFECTIVE: only one study has reported that the product might not be effective with one study conducted in humans that proved to be ineffective.
  • LIKELY INEFFECTIVE: two scientifically rigorous studies found that the product is not effective for weight loss. In a clinical trial research study, two groups of rats with the same weight at the beginning of the study. At the end of the study the mice in the treatment of raspberry ketones group did not lose weight, but rather gained less than the control group.
  • INEFFECTIVE: most studies claimed that the is no reliability that the product works effectively in humans. There is no enough evidence to generalize that the product is effective in humans. More studies need to be conducted to improve reliability and generalizability.
  • INSUFFICIENT EVIDENCE: this is acquired by conducting more scientific studies to be able to conclude the positive effectiveness of the product. Thus more information is still lacking to back up the claim of insufficient evidence claim.

Side Effects & Safety

The product is said to be safe for consumption for a period not longer than 8 weeks and as such users can ONLY commit to an eight weeks’ program. Because the Raspberry ketones supplement is related to synephrine, a stimulant that prompts jittery, increased blood pressure, or rapid heartbeat, clients are urged to take the supplement with caution.

This is supported by one consumer who complained about shakiness and palpitations after consuming the supplement. There are very few reported cases of other side effects of the product.

Precautionary measures

  • There is no evidence that supports breastfeeding mothers and pregnant women from taking this supplement. Therefore, these groups of people MUST not consume these supplements.
  • Diabetic patients should not use this supplement because they are already on medication that reduces sugar levels. This is because Raspberry ketones are known to lower blood sugar levels.

There are no known or reported contraindications of the supplement to any drug.

Raspberry Ketones Dosage

The product comes in 100 to 400 mg Capsules. There are 120 Capsules per bottle. However, the dosage is also determined by the users’ age, health and other preexisting conditions. Any users with other ailments must consult the medical practitioners before use.

However, the manufacturer prescribed that 100-400 mg can be taken 1 to 2 times per day. This product is available in many pharmacies worldwide and is available over-the-counter.

Our conclusion

Raspberry ketones was not synthesized in a lab and as such it is a completely natural product. Natural products are safer for consumption that synthesized ones. The active ingredients in the supplement gives uses double action: fat blocking and fat burning in one product.

Although the supplement suppress appetite, users eat less and less while their serotonin levels are kept at par thus enabling users to stay in a mood good.

Overweight and obesity are experienced as a result of poor eating habits and lack of physical activities. Inasmuch as raspberry ketones is good, users who do not change their eating patterns and add a little physical activity WILL NOT see the desired results. It is important to know that the product need to be supplemented by good and healthy behavioral change.

However, this is one product that has a multilevel efficacy index resulting from the few rigorous reviews conducted by reputable researchers on humans. This goes on to show that more research need to be done, legitimately to ensure that the users of raspberry ketones supplement users get value for money and ultimately, the public is protected.

It is not good when the public is left with uncertainties like this. In this case the uncertainty does not predispose users to some health hazard and that is comforting. The only expected outcome with the product users here will be whether the person will lose weight or not.

Raspberry ketones are chemicals from red raspberries that are used for their flavor and fragrance. Although some supplement companies claim that raspberry ketones promote weight loss and increase lean body mass, there really isn’t enough scientific evidence that proves these claims to be true, at this point in time.

Are raspberry ketones just another element of a fad diet, or can they actually help you to lose those extra few pounds you’ve been working on? You may be struggling to lose weight and tempted to turn to supplements that claim to make a difference.

Unfortunately, we don’t really have a clear answer to that question just yet. But what we do know is that in studies conducted on rodents and in labs, only very high doses of raspberry ketones were effective for weight loss. These doses may not even be safe for humans.

So are raspberry ketones worth all the fuss or should we ignore the hype?

What Are Raspberry Ketones?

Ketones are natural chemicals that give raspberries their enticing aroma. They are phenolic compounds that also occur in berries like blackberries, cranberries, and other fruits. Although raspberry ketones have been used to add fragrance and flavor to foods and products like colas, ice cream, cosmetics, candles, soaps and candies for many years, they have recently gained attention for their alleged ability to help with weight loss.

The raspberry ketone is actually one of the most expensive products used in the food industry — the natural compound can cost as much as $20,000 per kilogram. Plus, extraction of pure raspberry ketone requires an insane amount of raspberries. Extraction occurs through hydrogenation and takes about a kilogram of raspberries (over 2 pounds) to make 1.4 milligrams of raspberry ketones. Considering a standard supplemental dose for humans is around 100–200 milligrams, that’s a lot of raspberries! This is exactly why some supplement companies use synthetic raspberry ketone, which is much cheaper. (1)

Structurally, raspberry ketones are somewhat similar to that of synephrine and ephedrine, two substances that are used for weight loss. Raspberry ketones also have some structural similarity to capsaicin, which is known for its pain-relieving and anti-diabetic properties.

Some research in rodents and test tubes shows that raspberry ketones might increase measures of metabolism and affect a hormone in the body called adiponectin, which regulates metabolism. Raspberry ketones are claimed to cause the fat within cells to be broken down more effectively, which helps the body burn fat faster.

Here’s the problem: there are no human studies on raspberry ketones alone for weight loss and the studies that are done in labs or with rodents involve very high doses of ketones.

Top 5 Potential Benefits & Uses of Raspberry Ketones

1. May Aid Weight Loss (or May Not)

To date, there is not one single study that evaluates the efficacy of raspberry ketones for weight loss alone in humans. There are some studies involving rodents that have mixed reviews, but suggest that raspberry ketones may help to reduce food intake and thereby promote weight loss.

A 2017 animal study out of Ohio State University found that raspberry ketone supplementation has limited benefit in fat loss beyond reducing food intake in mice fed a high-fat diet. (2)

A 2005 study published in Life Sciences evaluated whether or not raspberry ketones help prevent obesity and activate lipid metabolism in rodents. The results of this study suggest that raspberry ketones prevent the high-fat-diet-induced elevations in body weight as well as the weights of the liver and visceral adipose tissues. (3)

One human study that includes raspberry ketones and other ingredients for weight loss shows promising results. The Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition published a randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind study that evaluated 70 obese but otherwise healthy women who participated in an eight-week weight-loss program. The women were given a multi-ingredient supplement containing primarily raspberry ketone, caffeine, capsaicin, garlic, ginger and citrus aurantium.

The program consisted of daily supplementation, a calorie-restricted diet and exercise training. Forty-five women completed the study after eight weeks, and significant differences were observed in body weight, fat mass, lean mass, hip girth and energy levels. The placebo group did benefit from the diet and exercise portion of the program as well, but the weight loss percentages were lower than the group who took the multi-ingredient supplement.

Although this supplement containing raspberry ketone was beneficial in this study, it’s impossible to know if it was the ketones or another ingredient in the supplement that made the difference. Of the six primary ingredients, any of them could have led to weight loss during this program. (4)

So here’s what we know about raspberry ketones and their benefits for weight loss: very little. When tested in labs and on rodents, raspberry ketones seem to aid weight loss and activate fat metabolism.

However, the ketones are highly concentrated in the lab studies and dosages are extremely high in the rodent studies, so it’s impossible to equate these findings to the efficacy of ketones for actual human consumption. Before we can make a clear recommendation for using raspberry ketones for weight loss, we need a lot more research, specifically involving humans using ketones alone.

2. May Reduce Inflammation of the Liver

A 2012 study published in the Journal of Medical Food found that raspberry ketone treatment, after a high-fat diet, can protect rats against nonalcoholic steatohepatitis, which is liver inflammation caused by a buildup of fat in the liver. Researchers reported that raspberry ketones had a dual effect of liver protection and fat reduction in the tested rats.

The issue with these studies involving rodents is that the doses are very high; in fact, the equivalent dose in humans is 100 to 300 milligrams a day, which is over 200 times greater than the average daily intake of raspberry ketones! This is a worrisome dosage, especially when compared to other fat-burning supplements that are on the market today. So although this study suggests that raspberry ketones may help to reduce liver inflammation, more studies need to be done on humans using the appropriate dosage. (5)

3. May Improve Cholesterol Levels and Insulin Resistance

A 2018 study found that raspberry ketones may have a therapeutic role in controlling hyperlipidemia and insulin resistance among obese rats. Again, this is an animal study and the ketone doses were 250–500 milligrams per kilogram of body weight, which would be a very high dose for humans. (6)

The study does suggest, however, that raspberry ketones contribute to the upregulation of AQP7 expression, which is protein that plays a role in metabolic function. Like most of the potential raspberry ketone benefits, more research is needed on this to indicate whether or not ketones are effective for normalizing cholesterol levels and insulin resistance in humans.

4. Increases Hair Growth

Researchers in Japan indicate that raspberry ketone has a structure similar to that of capsaicin, the molecular compound that’s found in spicy peppers. It’s believed that like capsaicin, raspberry ketones activate sensory neurons, thereby promoting hair growth by increasing dermal insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) expression.

A study on mice found that when 0.01 percent raspberry ketones were applied topically, it increased IGF-1 expression at the surface of hair follicles and promotes hair regrowth in mice at four weeks after application.

When researchers tested whether or not raspberry ketones work as a natural treatment for thinning hair on humans, they also found positive results. When raspberry ketone was applied topically to the scalp, it promoted hair growth in 50 percent of humans with alopecia at five months after applications. (7)

5. Improves Skin Elasticity

The same researchers in Japan that reported the efficacy of raspberry ketones for hair growth evaluated its ability to improve skin elasticity in humans. They found that when 0.01 percent raspberry ketone is applied topically to skin on the face, it causes increased cheek skin elasticity at two weeks after application. This was only tested on five women, but it is a bit of promising evidence offered on raspberry ketones involving humans. (8)

Raspberry Ketone Uses in Traditional Medicine

Traditionally, ketones found in red raspberries were used to prevent high cholesterol, diabetes and even liver cancer. Raspberries were consumed for their ketones before supplements with much higher doses were available. Raspberries were also eaten for their nutritional value.

Raspberry nutrition is quite impressive, boasting powerful antioxidants and nutrients like vitamin C, manganese, vitamin K and magnesium. Consuming raspberries is known to help reduce inflammation, boost heart health, ease arthritic pain and fight aging.

Raspberry Ketone Supplements & Dosage

Raspberry ketones supplements are available in capsule form, and they are widely available online and in vitamin stores. Raspberry ketone supplement dosage ranges from 100–1,000 milligrams, once or twice daily. Naturally, you only eat about 0.42 milligrams of raspberry ketones per kilogram of bodyweight, so if you choose to take ketone supplements, you are increasing your intake by a whole lot.

The FDA warns that supplement brands tend to contain higher concentrations of raspberry ketones than what’s generally recommended and the safety of these doses hasn’t been evaluated in scientific studies.

Before you choose to use high doses of raspberry ketone supplements, it would be best to have medical research involving humans that supports the biological effects first. There is no scientific research that evaluates the side effects of these doses on humans or the impact that they have on human cells and organs.

How to Get Raspberry Ketones in Your Diet

You can get ketones in your diet by eating berries (including raspberries, blackberries and cranberries) and fruits like kiwi, apples, grapes and peaches. Raspberry ketones are also commonly used to flavor some foods and drinks, and it’s estimated that ketones are mostly consumed through processed foods that use them as a flavoring agent.

Raspberry ketones are said to increase measures of metabolism and affect a metabolism-regulating hormone in the body called adiponectin. Adiponectin is involved in regulating glucose levels and breaking down fatty acids. It’s known for its anti-diabetic, anti-obesity and cardio-protective properties.

Some supplement companies are claiming that raspberry ketones are a great way to increase adiponectin levels, but guess what? You can boost this fat-burning hormone naturally with foods like avocados, nuts and olive oil. Drinking coffee can also increase adiponectin levels and so will exercising. (9)

Role in Ketosis/Keto Diet + Recipes

Some people get confused about raspberry ketones playing a role in ketosis and being part of the keto diet. The ketogenic diet is meant to change our “fuel source” that our bodies use to stay energized. It’s a diet made up of high-fat, low-carb foods. Switching to these foods will place your body in a state of ketosis, which is when your body becomes a fat burner, instead of sugar burner.

When your body doesn’t have any glucose to burn for energy, it will burn fat and produce ketones instead. And once your blood levels of ketones reach a certain point, you are officially in a state of ketosis.

The ketones that play a role in the keto diet are made naturally within the human body. They are water-soluble molecules that are produced in the liver. The body breaks down fatty acids into ketones, which then circulate through the bloodstream and alter our metabolism so that we continue to burn fat.

When you are following a ketogenic diet plan, you should only be eating fruits like raspberries occasionally. You also want to avoid eating any processed foods that are commonly made with raspberry ketones.

The ketones that are naturally produced by the liver are called “endogenous ketones,” but there are also “exogenous ketones” that are provided from outside the body and used in many keto supplements to raise ketone levels in the body. These ketones, which are also called keto salts, are completely different than raspberry ketones. Raspberry ketones don’t raise ketone levels in the body and they don’t mimic endogenous ketones, so you wouldn’t use raspberry ketones as part of the keto diet.

Raspberry Ketone Side Effects, Interactions & Precautions

Raspberry ketone supplements may cause side effects including rapid heart beat, increased blood pressure and jitteriness. They may also lower blood sugar levels and interact with medications used to control your heart rate, blood sugar, cholesterol and hormones.

There is not enough research to clarify whether or not raspberry ketones are safe for women who are pregnant or nursing, so they should avoid using these types of supplements.

If you choose to use raspberry ketones, I recommend consulting with your healthcare provider first. Remember that the supplement dosage is likely much higher than the amount of ketones you would ever consume naturally, and the science of the safety of these doses is extremely limited.

Final Thoughts on Raspberry Ketones

  • Raspberry ketones are natural phenolic compounds found in raspberries, other berries and some fruits. Traditionally, raspberry ketones have been consumed for their anti-diabetic and cholesterol-lowering properties, but more recently, they have gained popularity for their potential ability to help with weight loss.
  • The evidence of raspberry ketones for weight loss is minimal. Most studies involve rodents or single cells in labs. There is some evidence that raspberry ketones can help to promote hair growth and improve skin elasticity in humans.
  • Here’s the bottom line: There are a lot of companies that claim to have the new magic pill. Weight-loss supplements are popular because they don’t require work. The truth is there is no magic pill. To lose weight and stay healthy, it’s best to eat a well-rounded diet, and you can rely on fat-burning foods that have been consumed by humans for thousands of years.
  • It’s only with daily physical activity and healthy lifestyle choices that you can, for example, lose 20 pounds in 30 days. The interest in raspberry ketones is out there, and there has been an increase in scientific research. Hopefully more evidence involving human experiments will clear up this controversial topic, but for now the results are unclear.

It’s easy to confuse raspberry ketones with regular ketones. Even though it sounds like they are simply raspberry-flavored ketones, that’s a common misunderstanding.

As it turns out, raspberry ketones have nothing to do with ketosis. Many people take raspberry ketones in an effort to lose weight. However, they will end up having wasted time and money. Learn more about raspberry ketones and what other effective options you have on the keto diet.

What Are Raspberry Ketones?

In its true form, a raspberry ketone is found naturally in trace amounts in red raspberries and other fruits like blackberries, cranberries, and kiwis. It’s what gives berries their appealing scent and flavor.

Before being sold as supplements, raspberry ketones were mostly used within the food industry, sold in items like ice cream and soft drinks, and in perfumes and cosmetics.

The claim is that raspberry ketones help your body burn fat faster and more effectively because they supposedly increase levels of adiponectin — a hormone that regulates metabolism and blood sugar levels.

Adiponectin is linked to helping hair growth, breaking down fatty acids, and regulating glucose levels. This inadvertently led to raspberry ketones being sold as a weight loss product.

Here’s the theory: Adiponectin typically increases when you lose weight. Those with low levels of the hormone tend to have a higher risk of suffering from type 2 diabetes, obesity, heart disease, and fatty liver disease. Supplementing with adiponectin would (theoretically) lead to reduced body weight and body fat.

Also, the molecular structure of raspberry ketones resembles molecules that are thought to boost metabolism: synephrine, a stimulant; and capsaicin, a component in chili pepper. The claim here is that these ketones can also boost metabolism because of the similarities.

However, there are problems with these claims, which you’ll discover below.

The Difference Between Exogenous Ketones and Raspberry Ketones

People who take raspberry ketones for the same reason they take exogenous ketones: they support healthy energy levels and help mitigate keto flu symptoms when you’re getting into ketosis.

Taking ketone supplements may also help athletes — who may consume more carbohydrates for performance — get the full benefits of ketosis.

Raspberry ketones and exogenous ketones share these common goals. Therefore, there is quite a bit of confusion surrounding the two. Before you dive into the differences — both in definition and scientific research — it’s important to understand what exogenous ketones are.

What Are Exogenous Ketones?

There are three different types of ketones your body produces in the absence of carbohydrates: Acetoacetate, beta-hydroxybutyrate, and acetone. Beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHB) is the active form that can flow freely in the blood and that your tissues can use easily.

Exogenous ketones are ketones that are produced outside your body, in supplement form. Exogenous ketones are a tool to get you into ketosis. They can also help with the following situations:

Lessen the Effects of a Carb Crash

If you eat a carb-filled meal, supplementing with exogenous ketones can help lessen the effects of a sugar crash. They give you a boost of ketones for energy and mental clarity, which helps when you go overboard with the carbs. And they work quickly. Most people feel the results of exogenous ketones within hours, if not less.

Getting Into Ketosis for the First Time

If you’re starting keto for the first time, you may experience what has been dubbed the keto flu. These are adverse side effects that range from nausea and difficulty concentrating to headaches and other flu-like symptoms. Supplementing with ketones typically lessens the impact of these symptoms.

Performing Athletically on Ketosis

Some athletes find it difficult to completely cut out carbs because of high-impact training. Therefore, athletes can supplement with exogenous ketones to get the full mental and energy benefits of ketosis while eating a higher percentage of daily carbs.

Exogenous ketones are not a weight loss supplement — they simply help give you the energy you need to burn more fat.

The Different Forms of Exogenous Ketones (That Work)

The following are common forms of exogenous ketones, all of which are more effective (as you’ll read later on) than raspberry ketones.

Ketone Esters

This is the raw ketone (typically BHB) that is not bound to another compound. Typically, your body can utilize ketone esters quickly, helping to raise ketone levels in the blood. Gastric distress can be a side effect.

Ketone Salts

A ketone body is typically bound to sodium, calcium, magnesium, or potassium. While it may not be as effective at raising ketone levels, it’s much easier on your digestive system.

Your body can use MCT (medium-chain triglyceride) oil, and other medium to smaller chain fats to help boost ketones. Your cells break down MCTs, indirectly creating ketone bodies.

Why Beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHB) Is the Most Efficient Ketone

As stated earlier, beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHB, 3-hydroxybutyric acid or 3-hydroxybutanoic acid) is one of the three ketone bodies you produce. It’s also the most common found in blood, making up to 78% of total ketones in your blood.

Your body uses two forms of BHB: endogenous and exogenous. Endogenous is the type of BHB it makes on its own. Exogenous BHB is the kind you supplement with, typically in the form of salts or esters.

Endogenous BHB is derived from acetoacetate (AcAc) and is the main ketone used for energy. BHB is stable and found in greater supply within your body. But you can lose acetone through sweat and exercise.

Your body can use any of the three ketones for energy, but BHB is the most efficient. BHB has been shown to assist in the following:

  • Reduce inflammation
  • Slow tumor progression and help fight cancer
  • Improve insulin sensitivity
  • Boost metabolic functions and heart health
  • Increase athletic performance
  • Enhance cognitive function and memory
  • Increase your lifespan

It’s also a more efficient energy source than glucose. The physical and mental benefits of BHB are undeniable.

To get more BHB flowing through your blood, follow a strict ketogenic diet, experiment with intermittent fasting, and supplement with exogenous ketones and MCT oil. While your body produces endogenous BHB naturally, exogenous ketones boost your ketone levels faster.

Scientific Research on Raspberry Ketones

Here’s the main issue with scientific research on raspberry ketones and human weight loss: There is none.

There are no human studies showing a ketogenic benefit from taking raspberry ketones.

Those selling these so-called weight loss supplements will cite a few studies with rats and mice to bulk up their credibility, but they aren’t as impressive as they’d have you believe. Here are some examples:

  • In one study, fat cells were isolated from rats and grown by researchers in a test tube with raspberry ketones added. This made the cells release more adiponectin and increased fat breakdown, but this doesn’t demonstrate that the same could happen in a living human or even a living rat.
  • In another study, researchers gave 40 rats a fattening diet along with raspberry ketones. Their adiponectin levels increased, but they were given the raspberry ketones in abnormally high amounts — over 100 times a feasible (or likely safe) amount for a human to take at all, much less on a regular basis.

There are better, more natural ways to increase adiponectin in your body and reduce fat — following a low-carb diet, regularly exercising, and even drinking caffeine found in green tea and coffee.

Raspberry Ketones Have Nothing to Do With Promoting Ketone Levels

For a complete breakdown of the types of ketone supplements available on the market, check out the Perfect Keto guide to ketone supplementation. Pay special attention to the category dedicated to phony ketone supplements that don’t improve your ketogenic journey.

Most Raspberry Ketone Products Aren’t Legitimate Ketone Supplements

Most raspberry ketone supplements are made with artificial flavoring agents. It’s much more difficult to find real raspberry ketones. Most of the supplements you’ll find use ground up anise seeds combined with a touch of real raspberry ketone.

Because of the high cost of ingredients, most brands use fillers and artificial ingredients to keep the supplements affordable.

Long-Term Effects of These Ketones Is Unclear

Unlike exogenous ketones like BHB, which measurably increase your ketone levels, you can’t be completely sure which raspberry ketones actually work.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration recognized them as a “Generally Recognized as Safe” food additive. However, that occurred back in the 1960s — before people viewed them as a fat burning supplement.

Bottom Line: Raspberry Ketones Have Nothing to Do With Ketosis

Even though they might sound legitimate, raspberry ketones have nothing to do with getting you into ketosis or burning fat mass.

It’s easy to allow the product appeal to pull you in, but these ketones are completely different than those made by your body. Even if you weren’t trying to emulate ketosis and just wanted to use raspberry ketones to lose weight, you would be left with nothing more than a much lighter wallet and disappointing results.

If you’re looking for a quick boost to get into ketosis, use exogenous ketones. But do your research.

Exogenous ketones are a tool to support energy levels and healthy weight loss — but they’re not a weight loss supplement. Exogenous ketones come in the form of ketone salts, ketone esters, and oils such as MCT oils.

The best exogenous ketones are those which help raise BHB levels in the blood. BHB is the most abundant ketone, and more efficient than glucose for energy.

Best bet: Don’t waste your time or money on raspberry ketones. Put your energy into following a healthy, ketogenic diet for real results. Only spend your hard-earned dollar on quality ketone products (like Perfect Keto Base) that are more likely to further your health goals.
