“Can’t” “fearless” are negative so steer away from words like that.

Sticky note it and stick them where you can see it! I place affirmations on my laptop, bedroom, bathroom mirror so I see it and say it the first thing I get up!

Why it’s important to focus on self-love. Grow on your positive thinking process. Because that itself is a process.

Build the confidence and boost the image of yourself.

I learned through the process I can steer away from negativity and focus on myself to build positive energy and vibrations.

Make strong and powerful suggestions to help you improve. Like areas where you say “I am not worthy”, you can positively affirm and say stuffs like “I am powerful and loved”.

Step #3: Take out at least five minutes of your time every morning, afternoon and night and repeat this positive affirmations for self-esteem to yourself.

It works much better when you do this in front of a mirror.

David Creswe of Carnegie Mellon University’s in a study found out that people who practice self-affirmation find it easy to solve problems even when under pressure.

An article published in PLOS ONE stated the process of identifying and focusing on one’s most important values — can protect against the damaging effects of stress on problem-solving performance.

Research have also shown that when students practice self-affirmation before the start of a new term, they can boost their academic performance and grade points.

The brain has an amazing wiring and due to neuroplasticity, there is always the possibility that we can change our thoughts and beliefs.

It is the ability of the brain to reorganize itself and make new neural connections throughout every point in an individual’s life.

Use affirmations to climb out of a negative mindset and into the light.

“I’m never going to be able to do this job; I’m just not smart enough.”

“Why does my boss want me to present at the trade show? I’m a terrible public speaker, and I’ll just embarrass the company.”

“I wish I could stick up for myself at work. In every meeting, I let the others walk over my ideas. I’m never going to get ahead.”

Many of us have negative thoughts like these, sometimes frequently. When we think like this, our confidence, mood and outlook can become negative, too.

The problem with negative thoughts is that they can become self-fulfilling prophecies. We talk ourselves into believing that we’re not good enough. And, as a result, these thoughts drag down our personal lives, our relationships, and our careers.

But, if we deliberately do the opposite and use positive thoughts about ourselves, the effect can be just as powerful but far more helpful.

In this article, we’ll explore how you can use affirmations to drive positive change in your career, and in your life in general.

What Are Affirmations, and Do They Work?

Affirmations are positive statements that can help you to challenge and overcome self-sabotaging and negative thoughts. When you repeat them often, and believe in them, you can start to make positive changes.

You might consider affirmations to be unrealistic “wishful thinking.” But try looking at positive affirmations this way: many of us do repetitive exercises to improve our physical health, and affirmations are like exercises for our mind and outlook. These positive mental repetitions can reprogram our thinking patterns so that, over time, we begin to think – and act – differently.

For example, evidence suggests that affirmations can help you to perform better at work. According to researchers, spending just a few minutes thinking about your best qualities before a high-pressure meeting – a performance review, for example – can calm your nerves, increase your confidence, and improve your chances of a successful outcome.

Self-affirmation may also help to mitigate the effects of stress. In one study, a short affirmation exercise boosted the problem-solving abilities of “chronically stressed” subjects to the same level as those with low stress.

What’s more, affirmations have been used to successfully treat people with low self-esteem, depression, and other mental health conditions. And they have been shown to stimulate the areas in our brains that make us more likely to effect positive changes in regard to our health.

This latter study suggests that a stronger sense of self-worth makes you more likely to improve your own well-being. So, for example, if you’re worried that you eat too much and don’t get enough exercise , using affirmations to remind yourself of your values can spur you on to change your behavior.

Note:

There is evidence that the higher your self-esteem, the more effective affirmations can be. However, this research also found that if you have low self-esteem, positive affirmations actually make you feel worse, because they set up a conflict between the positive state you desire and the negative feelings you currently experience. How to Use Positive Affirmations

You can use affirmations in any situation where you’d like to see a positive change take place in your life. These might include times when you want to:

  • Raise your confidence before presentations or important meetings.
  • Control negative feelings such as frustration, anger, or impatience.
  • Improve your self-esteem.
  • Finish projects you’ve started.
  • Improve your productivity.
  • Overcome a bad habit.

Affirmations may be more effective when you pair them with other positive thinking and goal-setting techniques.

For instance, affirmations work particularly well alongside Visualization . So, instead of just picturing the change you’d like to see, you can also write it down or say it aloud using a positive affirmation.

Affirmations are also useful when setting personal goals . Once you’ve identified the goals you’d like to achieve, affirmative statements can help you to keep yourself motivated in order to achieve them.

The power of affirmations lies in repeating them to yourself regularly. It’s useful to recite your affirmations several times a day (have them pop up in your notifications!). How to Write an Affirmation Statement

Affirmation statements usually target a specific area, behavior or belief that you’re struggling with. The following points can help you to write the affirmation statement that best fits your needs.

  • Think about the areas of your life that you’d like to change. For instance, do you wish that you had more patience? Or deeper relationships with your friends and colleagues? Or would you like a more productive workday?

    Write down several areas or behaviors that you’d like to work on. Be sure that they are compatible with your core values and the things that most matter to you, so that you’ll feel genuinely motivated to achieve them.

  • Be sure that your affirmation is credible and achievable. Base it on a realistic assessment of the facts. For instance, imagine that you’re unhappy with the level of pay that you currently receive. You could use affirmations to raise your confidence to ask for a raise.

    However, it probably wouldn’t be wise to affirm to yourself that you’re going to double your salary: for most people, and most organizations, doubling what you’re earning in one go isn’t feasible. Keep it realistic! After all, affirmations are not magic spells – if you can’t believe in them, it’s unlikely they’ll impact your life.

  • Turn negatives into positives. If you are struggling with negative self-talk, note down the persistent thoughts or beliefs that are bothering you. Then choose an affirmation that is the opposite of that thought and belief.

    For example, if you habitually think, “I’m not talented enough to progress in my career,” turn this around and write a positive affirmation such as, “I am a skilled and experienced professional.”

  • Write your affirmation in the present tense. Write and speak your affirmation as if it’s already happening. This helps you to believe that the statement is true right now. For instance, “I am well-prepared and well-rehearsed, and I can give a great presentation” would be a great affirmation to use if you feel nervous speaking in front of a group.
  • Say it with feeling. Affirmations can be more effective when they carry emotional weight. You need to want this change to happen, so every affirmation that you choose to repeat should be a phrase that’s meaningful to you. For example, if you’re worried about a new project that you’ve been tasked with, you could tell yourself, “I am really excited to take on new challenges.”

Examples of Affirmations

By definition, your affirmation will be personal to you, and specific to what you want to achieve or change, but the following examples may provide some inspiration:

  • I have plenty of creativity for this project.
  • My work will be recognized in a positive way by my boss and colleagues.
  • I can do this!
  • My team respects and values my opinion.
  • I am successful.
  • I am honest in my life, and my work.
  • I like completing tasks and projects on time.
  • I’m grateful for the job I have.
  • I enjoy working with my team.
  • I’m bringing a positive attitude to work every day.
  • I am excellent at what I do.
  • I am generous.
  • I am happy.
  • I will be a leader in my organization.

What about affirmations to help treat the two most common mental illnesses in the world – anxiety and depression?

Can the causes or symptoms of anxiety and depression be reduced, or even healed, through positive affirmations?

Promising Research on Affirmations

In a 2009 study done at Arizona State University, three expert ‘populations’ were studied: popular self-help literature, respected psychologists and psychotherapists, and individuals who were experiencing anxiety and/or depression.

In the research that was conducted it was determined that, at the very least, affirmations can be useful as a supplemental form of treatment for many depressed and/or anxious patients. For some patients, affirmations proved to be the most influential part of their recovery process.

Within the study, 17 therapists on a scale of 1-7, rated seven different affirmations on how effective they were in the treatment of those struggling with an anxiety disorder and/or clinical depression. The same affirmations were used for both disorders, as they often complement each other.

Interestingly, the three highest-rated affirmations were for anxiety. The top three affirmations had average scores of 5.43, 5.37, and 5.03, respectively. On the other hand, the top three affirmations for depression had scores of 4.83, 4.58, and 4.58.

Nearly all of the participants (including the therapists) agreed that affirmations can be a helpful practice when recovering from anxiety and depression! Individuality and the patients’ preferred method of treatment is thought to be the most important element in determining how effective a method of treatment is.

In other words, the willingness and belief of the individual to embrace positive affirmations increases the likelihood that these affirmations will make a positive impact!

The authors conclude with restating that treatments for anxiety and depression are highly individualized and customizable, and must be constructed as such. In the construction of an individualized treatment plan, all therapists and the authors of the study agree that affirmations should be deliberated – as they have been embraced by therapists and patients alike.

How to Practice Your Affirmations

First, it’s important to understand that the effectiveness of affirmations depends on your commitment and dedication to practicing consistently. Therefore, the belief of the affirmation will get easier over time. If you talk every day, then you are already practicing affirmations.

Every word you speak is an affirmation. And so, it’s just that sometimes our affirmations to ourselves, about others, or our situation is not positive. Affirmations help us to consciously flip the switch and begin speaking in the direction that we actually want to travel.

You will want to make affirmations a daily routine (or at least a few times a week) in order to achieve the maximum benefits and help relieve your anxiety/depression faster. Be gentle with yourself though and do them as often as you can. Like anything, it seems harder in the beginning and then gets easier and easier until it’s like second nature.

Positive Affirmations: Helpful tips

Contemplate your positive qualities.

As human beings, we more often think about what we’d rather change about ourselves than what we love. We are all unique creatures. And, we possess gifts that no one else in the world has! Write down the things that you know are special about you, and write them in the first person (“I am…”)

Consider the negative scripts that you wish to replace with positive ones.

What goes through your head when you’re down? Do you have negative perceptions about your looks, intelligence, accomplishments or abilities? Time to replace that negative chatter with those positive qualities you listed in step one!

Consider what positive goals you want to accomplish.

There are specific goals that you want to achieve, right? As you continue to feel better about yourself, you’ll be more and more motivated to work towards these. Write them down.

Order your list of goals and scripts.

You may find that your list of scripts and goals have grown rather large. That’s great! You will want to work on a few of these at a time. Choose what is the most urgent and work on these first. When you see measurable improvement in an area, move down the list!

Re-write and re-read your affirmations and goals daily.

Make a habit of writing your goals and scripts daily – to the point where they’re the last thing you think of when you fall asleep and the first thing when you wake up.

Combine your positive qualities (step 1) with your goals (step 3).

What positive qualities did you affirm in step one that can help you achieve the goals that you’ve set? If you resolve to lose weight and have great focus, then you can combine these two to give yourself some momentum. Choose two or three affirmations to support your goals.

Meditate on your affirmations.

Get in a meditative state, whatever is most comfortable for you, close your eyes, and think about your affirmations. Feel the emotions that arise as you repeat the words and think about the future.

Remind yourself of your affirmations.

Write down your affirmations on notecards, a whiteboard, scrap paper, or Post-Its. Then, place them around your home, work, and car. Of course, place them where you’ll see them!. Each time you see the affirmation, think about what it means to you.

Keep at it!

Finally, remember that practice makes perfect. As you continue with your affirmations and begin to see real evidence of your making small changes, feel gratitude and keep going. You will begin to see bigger and bigger changes in your mood, feelings about yourself and others, and your life.

My story

I was 15 years old and plagued with anxiety and depression. My dad had many issues and home life was stressful. I had just experienced my first heartbreak, I felt inadequate, worthless and my self-esteem took a beating. I was feeling totally overwhelmed and panic attacks were a regular occurrence.

Nothing seemed clear or easy. I was insecure, constantly worried about how I was being perceived by others and I put so much pressure on myself. I would worry about my health, relationships, performances (I’m a drummer) and pretty much anything my mind could possibly worry about. This insecurity was made worse by substance abuse, I was smoking a lot of weed, taking amphetamines and drinking regularly.

At 2 am on November the 18th 2009, I drove my mate’s car back from a party, I was drunk and in a bad space. I lost control of the car and swerved into the bank at speed, flipping us up about 15 feet into the air before we crashed down on the road upside down, smashing the windows and crushing the roof in towards the top of our heads. All I remember is my friend screaming “Jake, get out the car’s on fire”.

The car crash was a wake-up call. I realised that for things to change for me, I had to change. My mum recommended I read The Power Of Now. In the book, Eckart Tolle tells of a night that almost ended in suicide, but he instead experienced a life changing shift in perspective. I suddenly realised I wasn’t alone in my distress, which was comforting and relieving. I didn’t feel like I could talk about my feelings so openly at that time, so reading about someone else’s experience of anxiety and depression helped a lot.

My introduction to mindfulness

In his book, Eckart explains that much of our anxiety is caused by poor thinking habits. We worry about what might happen tomorrow and stress over past mistakes. He resolves this by outlining that we actually only ever have control over what we do in this moment, right here and now.

I learnt that I was separate from my thoughts and I was no longer lost in thought without knowing that I was thinking. I was now aware of the content of my thoughts. I began to realise that I could actively change these thoughts and focus more of my attention on pleasant thoughts and experiences. I no longer felt defined by my ever-changing thoughts and feelings and no longer felt like I was a terrible person for having ‘bad’ or ‘dark’ thoughts.

I realised that there were solid evolutionary and environmental reasons for my anxiety and worry, that these feelings were totally normal and natural and I was not a ‘weak’ or ‘weird’ person for having them – it was OK to feel anxious and I would tell myself this regularly, which really helped.

I began to understand that whilst we worry to excess, everything immediately around us at that exact moment is usually OK, it might not be perfect, but is it the apocalypse? Does everyone hate us? Are we totally incompetent and incapable? Generally not, but many of us spend so much time creating internal ‘soap operas’ – abusive, often self-directed dialogue telling ourselves we aren’t good enough, running over past mistakes and a range of imagined dramas. We generate countless unpleasant ‘what if’ scenarios and all of the above can cause severe anxiety and stress.

Mindfulness meditation was a way of accessing the ‘power of now’ – paying attention to the world around me in a new light. A way of paying attention to my thought patterns, emotions, behaviours and beliefs so I could feel separate from them and adapt them to benefit my life.

I started benefitting from exercises like the ‘body scan‘ – becoming aware of the sensations of my body, scanning each body part from head to toe whilst I was in bed which helped my mind to rest and made it easier to sleep.

I started mindful eating – the process of eating slowly and savouring food, becoming aware of the textures, smells and tastes of food in great detail, which helps to enjoy it more.

I started mindful drumming, walking and even mindful dishwashing – really becoming aware of all the sensations, sights and sounds that occurred whilst I was doing these things that before I would have unconsciously rushed through and barely remembered. These activities now had a new level of interest and even the dull ones became enjoyable.

I started attending weekend life coaching and meditation workshops. I learnt to meditate, to sit and just be, to enjoy the experience of feeling alive, of feeling totally aware without so many thoughts. I would focus on the rise and fall of my chest; the sensation of the air on my face; the texture of the clothes on my skin; sounds without labelling them as ‘a bird’ or ‘a car’ but instead just allowing myself to experience these things as a raw experience. This can often feel quite blissful and profound. This process can alleviate stress and opens our experience to the present moment, which is usually OK (not the apocalypse) and can, in fact, be totally energising and peaceful all at once.

This process started to make me feel happier and manage addictions to smoking and other substances, even comfort eating. When we are more aware of our thoughts, emotions and impulses and more satisfied in this moment through rewarding practices like mindfulness, there is often less need to turn to some kind of impulse or addiction. Why change your state if you are already content?

Self -affirmations came just after. I remember trying them for the first time, saying things like “I love me” whilst looking into a mirror and it felt horrific. Have you ever tried saying “I love me” whilst looking into your own eyes? At first, it feels horribly self-indulgent, but after time it leaves you feeling more self-accepting, confident and resilient.

I remember the moment they started taking effect, I was standing looking in front of the mirror in my bedroom speaking my affirmations out loud and suddenly had a rush of contentment and elation. The only time I had ever experienced this was when taking drugs or in glimpses during meditation. Almost a decade later, I’m 25 and still using them with pleasant results today.

Conclusion

To wrap up, I want to offer a few practical tips that have helped me and others to benefit from mindfulness and self-affirmations.

  • Attend a science-based mindfulness group. There will likely be a free/low-cost meditation group in your local town/city. It’s easier to commit to doing it when you are out of the house (away from distractions) and with others who are doing it also. Ask the NHS or a local mental health organisation to find well-reviewed groups. You could also try meetup.com.

These techniques have helped me move from feeling like my life was a car crash (quite literally), to feeling more at ease and happy within myself. Affirmations for Depression and Mental Health Issues by Joseph S. Fusaro

Some people underestimate what affirmations for depression can do for people struggling with mental health issues.

While they are not a magic pill that will cure feelings of loneliness, alienation, and confusion in an instant, they can serve as your first step towards recovery.

I am a living proof of it.

My Story

When I was younger, I had some depression and ADHD. When I was finishing college, I was officially diagnosed with depression, ADHD, and severe anxiety. This would last into my early 20’s.

I was prescribed several medications, some of which were controlled substances. It didn’t take long until I was dependent and addicted to these medications.

In 2007, I decided to enter a rehab facility since I felt powerless to the medications.

I went there because I was addicted to 2 medications. Ironically, I left this hospital after 3 weeks with 6 new prescriptions. These drugs would drain the life out of me for the next few months, so I switched back to the original medications because I figured that taking 2 meds was a lot better than taking 6.

The Struggle

I played this game with my body and mind up until I was 30.

The 2 controlled substances would eventually send me into a full-blown manic episode with spurts of psychosis. At this point, I had just been released from what I think was my 9th or 10th hospital stay. This made me realize that I could not live my life like this anymore.

Those symptoms of depression can’t live in me anymore. There had to be another way. I understood that I did need something for my bipolar disorder and insomnia, but I did not need to be on plenty of medications to numb me for the rest of my life.

The Breakthrough

Luckily, I was blessed with a doctor that taught me meditation. He taught me self-compassion. Most importantly, he taught me that I am worthy of love and that I deserve peace and happiness in my life as much as anyone else.

I honestly didn’t know that before.

I think that this is the problem for most people that live with a mental illness. We either lose our ability to love ourselves or aren’t born with the self-love that others already have or have developed naturally throughout their lives.

First Step Towards Recovery

To be honest, I have always loved to write, so I started writing journal entries about gratitude, self-compassion, and “I am” statements.

I would go on to write 3 poetry books about my recovery. This lead to listening to affirmation tracks when I went for walks and meditated. I would even let them play for an hour or so when I was falling asleep.

I admit that at first it was difficult to accept that these positive things are true, but I felt that it was starting to help me with my depression. I had so much fear, anger, and resentment pent up inside me that I didn’t believe these affirmations, but I knew that I wanted to feel these things more than anything else in the world.

Affirmations for Depression and Staying on Track

Every time I listen to my affirmations for depression, things get easier.

Affirmations are not about tricking your mind into believing you are a good person. They are about giving you the support and self-love you deserve that is sometimes difficult to find from others. As we all know, the easiest way to change the world is from within.

About 6 months ago, I was considering creating my own affirmation tracks in my recording studio. I shared this idea with a friend and she enthusiastically blurted out, “ThinkUp App!”

  5. Use your own voice to increase your confidence, self-love, and belief in yourself.
