But, unfortunately, good skin takes time, effort, consistency, and patience. If you are willing to work for it, here you can find everything you need. You won’t require expensive products, nor you’ll need much time. Most of the product you already have in your fridge. Choose the ones that work best for your skin type, and enjoy smoother, fresher skin.
Most Effective Homemade Remedies for Crystal Clear Skin
Refreshing Water Tonic
You will need one cucumber, one lemon, mint leaves, and two liters of water.
Slice the lemon and cucumber, put them to in bowl filled with two liters of water, add the mint leaves as well, and then leave the mix in the fridge. You can drink this throughout the whole day. It helps the skin because all the ingredients have healing properties that help our skin rejuvenate itself. The best part is – this drink is super tasty and safe for everyday consumption.
Papaya-Based Face Mask
You will need ¼ cup of cocoa, ¼ cup of ripe papaya, ¼ cup of honey, 2 tbsp of grind oatmeals.
Blend the mix (add water if too sticky), and apply to skin. Leave the mask to work for about 10 minutes, then wash your face with warm water.
The papaya is commonly used in skin-care products. It removes dead skin cells, reduces wrinkles and discoloration.
Turmeric + Water
This is a simple one, just add 2 tbsp of turmeric ¼ cup water to get a thick paste. Apply on your face and let it act for 10 minutes. After that wash off with cold water. You can also use this paste every day.
Turmeric + Pineapple Juice
Make a thick paste from 2 tbsp of turmeric and ¼ cup pineapple juice. Apply on your face and keep for 15 minutes before washing it off with lukewarm water. This home remedy is amazing for dark circles.
Turmeric + Sugarcane Juice
Again, just mix 2 tbsp of turmeric and ¼ cup of sugarcane juice. Repeat the procedure as with the previous mix – wait for 15 minutes and then wash after with lukewarm water.

Sandalwood powder to remove scars from face.
Castor oil has been used as a healing agent since the days of Ancient Egypt, about 6000 years ago. It has many benefits for the body’s overall well-being as well as specifically for skin. Ricinoleic acid has antibacterial, antiseptic, antiviral, and anti-fungal properties. It can kill any bacteria and other organisms that cause redness and swollenness.
You can apply it directly to the skin with a cotton pad or mix in other ingredients to make face masks. Read in detail about all the benefits of castor oil, as well as more homemade masks.
Castor Oil + Baking soda
For this mask, you will need one tbsp of castor oil with half a tbsp of baking soda. After making a smooth paste, apply on the face. Leave it on for 10 minutes and then wash off with cold water.
Potatoes can greatly improve skin health. The enzymes found in potatoes have bleaching properties, which help lighten the skin and heal discoloration, aged skin or sunspots. They can also be beneficial for oily skin. You can use them in combination with other ingredients or just directly apply them directly on the face. Peel off the potato, cut it in half and rub it onto the skin in circular motions. Massage the face with the potato for five minutes, then wash it off with cold water.
Make some chamomile tea – place a few tea bags in boiling water (around 250ml of water for one tea bag) and let it soak for ten minutes. After that, take off the tea bags and put the tea in the refrigerator. After a couple of hours, you can use the drink. Take a cotton ball and apply on the face. Always use on a clean face. You don’t need to wash off afterward.

Tomato Pulp + Cucumber Water
Tomatoes are an excellent toner. They help unclog the pores and prevent the development of acne and pimples. Take ¼ cup of cucumber water and mix it with half a cup of tomato pulp. Apply on face and leave it to act for 15 minutes. After that wash off with lukewarm water.
Baking Soda Mask
Baking soda has anti-inflammatory properties that help soothe swelling, redness, rashes, and sunburn. To make the mask you will need 2 tbsp of baking soda, 2 tbsp of water, and 1 tbsp of lemon juice. Mix the ingredients in a small bowl to get a smooth paste. First, clean your face with water, then apply the paste. Let it sit for 15 minutes, before washing it off with room temperature water. After this, you can use a non-comedogenic moisturizer.
Rub fresh garlic or garlic juice directly on the affected area. Leave it on the skin for 15 minutes and then wash it off with room temperature water. Garlic is highly recommended because of the antimicrobial properties of allicin, its active ingredient. It’s believed that it can reduce redness and fight off those annoying pimples. Just a word of caution: allicin is really powerful, so if you have sensitive skin be careful, as it’s been known to cause irritation.
There are many ways in which you can use lemons to improve skin’s health. First, you can drink freshly squeezed lemon with a glass of water every day in the morning. It’s an amazing way to wake up the body, and remove toxins. Second, you can combine lemon juice with various other ingredients and make facial masks for all skin types. Yet another way to use the lemon is by cutting it in half and applying it directly to your face. Take one lemon, cut it in half and rub it directly on the skin in circular motions. Massage the face with the lemon for up to five minutes, before washing off with cold water. Lemons are rich in vitamin C and a great skin lightening ingredient. It also removes age spots and blemishes, giving the skin a fresh look.
Green Tea For Clear Skin
You will need ½ tbsp of honey, one tbsp of lemon juice, boiled water and one bag of green tea. Steep the green tea bag in the boiled water for about ten minutes. After that, remove the tea bag and add the honey and lemon juice. (You can add more honey or lemon to better suit your taste). You should drink the tea while it’s still warm. If you don’t normally drink green tea, you can start off with one cup a day. Tea lovers can drink up to three cups a day. Green tea is full of antioxidants, and has many benefits on the skin, including reducing acne breakouts.
Aspirin Face Mask
You will need 3-4 aspirin pills, one tbsp of honey and water or jojoba oil. First, mix the honey and jojoba oil in a bowl. Then, add hot water until you get a more smooth consistency. Finally, add the aspirin pills in powdered form. When the solution has cooled down apply to affected areas with clean fingers. Leave it on for ten minutes and then wash off with room temperature water.

Apple Cider Vinegar
The acidic properties present in apple cider vinegar exfoliate dead skin cells, which reveals a healthy layer of skin cells. In order to apply on the face first dilute with water. Mix one tbsp of apple cider vinegar with one tbsp of water. You can control the intensity of this tonic by adding less or more water, depending on your skin’s sensitivity. Take a cotton pad and apply the tonic on your face. Leave it to act overnight before washing off the next morning. Because it’s recommended for apple cider vinegar to stay on your face for a couple of hours it’s best done before bed. You can repeat this procedure every night.
Lemon + Egg White
You will need one raw egg white and one tbsp of honey. Separate the white from the yolk in a small bowl. Add one tbsp of honey in it, and mix until you get a sticky paste. You can apply this to affected areas and leave it to do its magic for 30 minutes, before rinsing off with warm water.
Take one tomato, cut it in half and rub it on the face for five to ten minutes. After that, wash off with room temperature water. Tomatoes are an excellent astringent. They are really important ingredients in many beauty products. The antioxidants in tomato, especially lycopene, fight cellular damage and skin inflammation.
Take one tbsp of bentonite clay and one tbsp of plain yogurt. Mix the bentonite clay and yogurt together. Apply on the face and wait for it to dry off. To remove the mask, wash it off with warm water.
Did you know that while the orange flesh contains about 71 milligrams, the peel contains over 136 milligrams of vitamin C? Vitamin C is a powerful tool when it comes to fighting inflammation. Almonds + Rose Water
Take ten almonds and let them soak in water overnight. The next morning blend them into a smooth paste. Add one to two tbsp of rose water and apply on face. Leave it on for 10-15 minutes, then wash it off with cold water. Rose water is an excellent home remedy for clear and glowing skin that will balance your skin’s natural pH values.
Authentic Homemade Remedies For Dry Skin
Coconut oil is an excellent natural moisturizer for the skin. It’s believed to help reduce inflammation, heal wounds and keep the skin hydrated and soft. Additionally, it’s also used as an ingredient in many products for acne-prone skin since it possesses antimicrobial properties that fight off harmful bacteria.
It’s a hassle-free method – you can use it directly on the skin. Just buy some extra virgin coconut oil and apply a few drops on the face with a cotton pad. Massage the area for a couple of minutes to allow the skin to absorb the oil. After that, you can wipe off any excess oil away with a new cotton pad. No need to rinse it off. You can repeat this procedure twice a day for best results – once in the morning and once before bed.
Olive Oil + Banana + Sugar Scrub
Easy to make at home, and a cheap alternative to fancy moisturizes, this scrub will help your skin recover lost moisture and repair the damage caused by dryness. Using it regularly can also brighten your skin and bring back the natural glow.
Just mash half a banana (for some masks banana peels can be even more effective), then add one tbsp of sugar, and one teaspoon of olive oil. Mix until you get a smooth paste. Apply a generous amount of the paste on your face (with clean fingers!) and rub it gently in a circular motion for a few minutes. Be careful not to rub too roughly because the sugar can irritate the skin. Wash it off with cool water and dry your skin with a clean towel.
Tea Tree Oil Mask
For this mask, you will need half an avocado and 3-4 drops of tea tree oil. In a little bowl mash half an avocado and add 3-4 drops of the oil, mix them together thoroughly until you get a consistent and smooth paste. Apply and allow the mixture to rest on your face for 15 minutes. After that wash it off with cool water and pat your face with a clean towel to dry it off. The avocado is rich in essential fatty acids, Vitamin E, and biotin, all of which help heal dry skin by keeping it moisturized and hydrated. The tea tree oil is famous for its antibacterial properties. Together this mix if perfect for dry skin.
Jojoba Oil + Clay Mask
Jojoba oil can help your skin in a ton of different ways and in a but we chose this mask because of a study conducted in 2012 that found that applying the mask every day for six weeks could noticeably improve skin tone and bring back skin moisture.
Mix one tbsp of the clay facial mask with one tbsp jojoba oil. Apply the mixture on your face and wait for it to dry off. After that wash off with cool water. You can repeat the application every 3-4 days.
Jojoba oil is considered a powerful anti-inflammatory ingredient, which can help fight skin infections and wrinkles, and aid wound healing.
Another way to naturally soothe dry skin is with an avocado mask made from one-half avocado, one tbsp olive oil, and one tbsp honey. Mash and mix the ingredients until you get a smooth paste. Apply the mask on your face and leave it on for 20 minutes. Your skin will feel moisturized and soft.
Sunflower Seed Oil
Sunflower oil is commonly used in products for infants since it’s really gentle and safe to use even on sensitive skin. You can apply it directly to your face with a cotton pad. Dub the cotton pad in the oil and rub it on your face in circular motions. The routine will help your skin retain its moisture. The oil is high in vitamin E, A, C, and D, which will additionally nourish your skin.
Revolutionary Homemade Remedies For Combined Skin
Aloe-Vera Gel + Papaya Pulp Mask
Mix 2 tbsp of aloe vera gel with 1 tbsp of papaya pulp. Once you get a smooth blend, apply it on a clean and dry face. Wait 30 minutes for the mask to act on the skin, then wash off with normal water. Aloe vera is famous for its anti-inflammatory properties, while the papaya dissolves dead skin cells and makes the skin lighter and softer.
Rose Water + Honey Mask
To make this remedy, mix together honey and rose water – 1 tbsp each. Apply evenly on the face, but make sure you cover the T-zone completely. Let it act for about 20 minutes and then wash it off with lukewarm water. Honey is an amazing ingredient for exfoliating dead skin cells, while rose water helps control the oil on the skin, giving it a fresh and glowing look.
Cucumber + Honey + Milk Mask
Peel off half a cucumber and then blend it to get a smooth paste. Add 1 tbsp of honey and 1 tbsp of milk. Apply this on your face and wait for it to dry off, for at least 20 minutes. You can put two slices of cucumber on your eyes for even deeper relaxation. Wash it off with cool water.
Papaya + Banana Mask
Mash one banana with half a papaya together. Optionally, you can add one tbsp of honey. Mix well, until you get a smooth paste. Apply a thick layer on the face and wait to dry off. After you’re done with it wash off with cool water.
Almonds + Oats Mask
You will need around 20-30 gr of almonds and 1 tbsp of oats. Place the almonds in water and leave them to soak overnight. Next morning, blend the almonds with a little water from the bowl where they were soaking until you get a smooth paste. In the paste add 1 tbsp of oats and mix again. Apply the paste on your face and keep it for 20 minutes, before washing it off with lukewarm water.
Oats and almonds are the perfect mixture for combined skin because the oats take away excess oil on the face, but the almonds bring back moisture to soften the skin.

How to Get Clear Skin (Naturally)

I have the most naturally imperfect skin of anyone. Some people were born with flawless, gorgeous skin. Then there are those like me, who…weren’t. My sensitive skin has always been an issue for me, and so I’ve spent a lot of time researching and figuring out how to get clear skin.
The first thing I want to point out is that the path to clear skin is not the same for everyone. What works for one person, may not work for the next. What triggers a breakout for one person, might not have the same effect on her best friend.
This is most likely why, when I was growing up, I was led to believe that there was nothing I could do, short of harsh medication, to get clear skin. The food I ate, they told me, had nothing to do with my breakouts. It was hormonal and I’d outgrow it, they told me.
When I was in my 20s and 30s still didn’t outgrow my acne breakouts, I figured it must just be genetic. I was born with problem skin and I was stuck with it for the rest of my life.
Thankfully, I kept reading and researching. Bad skin can be really life-disrupting and I wanted to do whatever I could to make it better. Turns out, there was a lot more to the story than they were telling me.
After years of trying everything from the apple detox diet (really!) to every acne cream under the sun, I wanted to share the things that have made the biggest difference in helping my skin.
By no means is my skin perfect or clear 100% of the time. I hesitated to even post the picture above because I still have plenty of imperfections. BUT, I’ve can say that at 40, my skin is more clear than it’s ever been. I’ve figured out what helps and hurts my skin the most and how to get clear skin, most of the time. And this article is for those of you still searching for answers.
I’m not wearing makeup (except a little mascara) in the picture above, and that’s something I never would have done in my teens, 20s, or early 30s.
There are some things that you can do to improve the condition of your skin. Our skin is the biggest organ of our body, and regardless of what you may have heard, what we eat and our lifestyle does impact it. We absolutely can control its appearance, at least to an extent.
Some people may need to do every single thing on this list in order to get clear skin (that’s me, raising my hand…) while others may only need to tweak one area in their life. Like I’ve mentioned before, how to get clear skin is very personal to the individual. Chances are, though, there IS something I talk about here that will help you.
Find the right skin care routine.
Going to bed with a face full of makeup isn’t going to be good for the average person’s complexion. You need some kind of nightly skin care routine. While not washing your face at all isn’t probably wise, washing your skin too often or with too harsh of a cleanser can also wreak havoc and cause breakouts. The key is to find what works for YOU. This is often going to require some trial and error. It took me years to find the right formula for my face.
What finally worked for me to balance the natural oils in my skin and stop the regular breakouts was the oil cleansing method. It sounds counterintuitive to wash your face with oil, but it turns out that oil is exactly what my skin needed. It naturally balances your skin’s oil.
Yes, you do need some oil on your face–if you strip it all away it signals your body to create more and that can lead to even more breakouts! The oil cleansing method balances your natural oils by washing away the bad oils and bacteria and replenishing the good oils and bacteria.
The right balance is key. The products I use and recommend for the oil cleansing method are Klo Organic Beauty cleanser and serum duo. You can read more about my experience with the oil cleansing method here.
If the oil cleansing method is not for you, look for a gentle cleanser that won’t strip away the oils. A simple Charcoal Cleansing Bar is perfect followed by a lightweight moisturizer. (<—my husband uses this one and loves it.)
I have found that most topical creams address the symptom and not the cause. It’s better to treat what’s causing the breakouts instead of the just treating the symptom. When you do that, you get caught in an endless cycle of treating breakout after breakout!
Keep your hands and phone away from your face.
Oh, this sounds so simple, doesn’t it? So simple, yet such a hard habit to break if you are constantly touching your face or resting your chin in your hands. Once you are aware of it, however, you can make yourself stop and save your face.
Your phone can also transfer acne-causing bacteria to your face, so be cognizant not to talk with your phone next to your face for long periods, or at all if you can help it. Hands free talking is the way to go!
Wash your bedding often.
Your skin touches your bedding for 6-10 hours a night. (Who am I kidding? I can’t remember the last time I was in my bed for 10 hours!) You want it to be touching a clean surface. Dirt and bacteria transfers from your sheets and pillowcase to your skin and can clog your pores and cause breakouts.
If you have severe acne, I suggest changing your pillowcase every single night. Otherwise, changing it 1-4 times a week is a good idea to help keep your skin clear. If you suffer from body acne, the same routine is suggested for changing your sheets.
Sometimes, the answer to how to get clear skin is as simple as changing your bedding!
Balance your hormones.
This is the trickiest one on the list. In simple terms, imbalanced hormones cause your body to signal the need for more oil production, leading to excess oil. The overproduction of oil causes breakouts. Knowing that is the easy part. Balancing our hormones isn’t as easy.
There are a number of things that can contribute to our hormones getting out of whack.
How To Balance Your Hormones for Clear Skin
Chronic stress is one of the biggest factors in messing up your hormones. There are some natural ways that you can manage your stress. Daily meditation is a HUGE help for me. Working out is another stress-reliever for me. Find what helps you to keep your stress levels in control.
Get Quality Sleep
Not getting enough sleep and disrupting your natural circadian rhythm can contribute to hormonal imbalance. Try to go to bed around the same time every night and get up around the same time, as well. Your hormones work on a schedule and they like it when you stay on a schedule, too. If you have trouble falling asleep, here are some tips to help you fall asleep naturally. If you struggle to get quality, sound sleep, a supplement formulated to promote sleep like this one may help. I use and love this one. Not only will exercising regularly help with your stress levels, it also helps keep your hormones balanced. Make sure you are exercising regularly, but don’t overexercise, but that can also lead to imbalanced hormones!
Think of Goldilocks…not too much, not too little, but juuuuust right! How much is the right amount? That depends on the individual, of course. Strive for 3 solid workouts a week at a minimum, but make sure you are taking a complete rest day at least once per week.
Eat Well for Balanced Hormones
A poor diet and poor digestion can lead to hormonal imbalances. Foods that contribute to hormonal imbalances are refined carbohydrates and overconsumption of fats high in omega 6 fatty acids such as safflower oil, sunflower oil, cottonseed oil, canola oil, soybean oil, and peanuts.
For balanced hormones, focus on eating healthy fats like those found in avocado and wild-caught salmon and lots of fruits and vegetables. Read below for more information on how diet affects our skin!
Avoid Hormone-Disrupting Products
Unfortunately, modern society is filled with products that disrupt our hormones and cause imbalances. You can combat this by avoiding all plastic products as much as possible.
It’s also important to use personal care products that don’t have hormone-disrupting chemicals. My favorite brand that I know is safe and will not cause hormone imbalances is Beautycounter. Every single product they sell is safe and without hormone-disrupting chemicals.
Consider Supplementing Wisely
There are supplements that can help you balance your hormones naturally, which can help you get clear skin. The supplements I use and recommend for balanced hormones are Daily Maca Plus Nutrient Booster Powder and Adrenal Strength.

Exercise. But, shower after sweating.
As I mentioned, exercising is an important part of keeping your hormones balanced, which can help you keep your skin clear. If you tend to sweat and not shower soon after, however, you could be contributing to clogged pores and more breakouts. This doesn’t happen for everyone, but if your skin is breakout-prone, this is something to consider. Try to shower and put on clean clothes as soon as you can after you work out.
Clean up your diet.
Eating well can help keep our hormones balanced, but there’s more to the story when it comes to food and how to get clear skin. It isn’t easy to pinpoint exactly how diet affects our skin, because it can be very different for everyone. Here are the top foods that can cause breakouts for some people: dairy, gluten, refined carbohydrates, and sugar.
Notice I said some people. How do you know which are a problem for you? Be diligent. You can eliminate them all at once for a period of time and then add them back in one at a time to see how it affects your skin. We found The Whole30 to be a helpful program to follow to do this.
Without a doubt, sugar causes breakouts for me. I found this out in my late 20s when I strictly cut out all sugars for a period of time. Within a week, my skin was completely clear. It stayed that way until I started eating sugar again. Now, I am able to find a balance of eating small amounts of sugar. When I slip and eat too much, it shows up in my complexion!
What Foods Will Make Your Skin Clear?
Everyone wants to know how to get clear skin. While avoiding certain foods can help you get clear skin, eating certain foods can also help you get that radiant glow. Here are the foods you want to load up on for the best skin ever:
- leafy green vegetables
- omega 3 fatty acid foods like salmon, chia seeds, walnuts, and sardines
- antioxidant-rich berries like blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, and strawberries
- collagen-rich foods like bone broth or collagen powder
- vitamin A-rich foods like sweet potatoes, carrots, and pumpkin
- green tea, especially matcha
If you have trouble getting enough leafy greens into your diet, I recommend trying green juice.

When it comes to good skin, there are tons of face washes and moisturizers that claim to do the trick, but not everyone can spend a pretty fortune on a trove of products. 1. Tea Tree Oil
Tea trea oil smells like a dream, and can do a lot of good for your skin. A study from the Journal of Dermatology, Venereology, and Leprology found that topical products containing 5% tea tree oil were effective at treating mild to moderate acne. Those treated with tea tree oil-infused gel were up to five times more likely to experience a reduction in acne than those treated with a placebo product.
As Jaliman explains, “tea tree oil contains anti-microbial properties.”
2. Green Tea Extract
Green tea isn’t just for drinking to get zen. It also can calm your skin. Frey says studies have shown applying products with 2% green tea extract twice a day reduced acne in adolescents with mild acne. Plus, green tea contains antioxidants that can help protect against skin issues like acne while fight against free radicals, according to WebMD.
3. Aloe Vera
Your aloe house plant isn’t just good for soothing sunburns — it can help clear up acne as well. Skin care products with high percentages of aloe as an active ingredient has been clinically proven to improve skin appearance in patients, according to dermatologists.
“A study on 60 acne patients who were also using tretinoin ( a prescription anti-acne medication) fared better when they also applied 50% aloe vera gel for eight weeks compared to those who used tretinoin alone,” says dermatologist Fayne L. Frey, MD, FAAD.
Honey is a humectant, which means it has properties that can help lock in skin moisture. In addition, the yummy treat can also prevent breakouts and infections from bacteria, as it also has antimicrobial and antibacterial properties, according to Livestrong.
All around honey is a pretty sweet skin care ingredient to help soothe your skin, especially when used in a moisturizing routine or as a face mask.
5. Coconut Oil
Coconut oil is known for being a great leg moisturizer, so why not apply the same philosophy to your face? But be careful — this recommendation is not one size fits all, according to derms.
“Coconut oil is a wonderful treatment for dry irritated skin and eczema on the body, but it can cause blocked pores on the face,” says dermatologist Heather D. Rogers, MD over email.
If you have dry skin or the conditions mentioned, you can try coconut oil to moisturize your face. If you are more sensitive, however, you might want to stick to only using it on the rest of your body where clogged pores aren’t so common.
6. Castor Oil
If you want an oil with a little less risk, try castor oil. This oil, known for aiding in long, healthy hair, can also be ideal for your skin.
“Castor oil is less likely to cause blocked pores, as it can be used a gentle oil cleanser or eye make remover,” says Rogers.
Castor oil contains a compound called undercylenic acid, which helps to disinfect the skin and rid bacteria that cause skin conditions such as acne, says Livestrong. With both antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, castor oil could be your new skin care go-to.
If your skin is giving you a headache, turn to asprin for some relief. Aspirin’s active ingredient, acetyl salicylic acid, has antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties that help treat pimples, according to Medical Daily.
Applying aspirin topically can can reduce swelling, unclog pores, and even soften your skin. To apply to pimples, try crushing a capsule and adding a few drops of water to make a paste. Dip a Q-tip in to the newly created ointment and apply as needed. Easy as pie.
Here’s another tea ingredient that can double as a skin care savior. Chamomile is an anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and mild astringent, according to a review published in the Molecular Medicine Reports. Honey and Lemon
Raw, organic, unprocessed honey is wonderful for your wellbeing, both inside and out. Mix a tablespoon of honey with a tablespoon of fresh lemon juice together, then apply this mixture to your moistened face. Leave it on for 15 to 20 minutes. The nourishing effects will be seen instantly after you rinse it away with cold water.
Oats are great for scrubbing away impurities and calming irritated skin. You’ll want to take 1/2 cup of oats and add just a little warm water to it. Allow it to sit for 5 minutes so it gets a pasty consistency. Then apply it to your face in circular motions, massaging gently as you go. Wash away with cold water when finished.

- Lemon and Orange – Citrus fruits contain fruit acids, which work like a mild chemical peel on your skin. Applying the juice to your face is like a gentle microdermabrasion. Wipe fresh juice on with a cotton ball, leave for a few minutes, and rinse off with cool water. You can do this every other day. Overuse may irritate the skin.
- Shea Butter – Shea butter contains moisturizers that can penetrate deep into the layers of your skin. It’s long lasting and cost effective. Use pure shea butter as some creams have dimethicone, an unnatural chemical, to provide “slip” so that it’s smooth and easy to use. (Find unrefined organic shea butter here.)
- Coconut Oil – Coconut oil contains the highest amount of saturated fatty acids of any of the vegetable-based oils. It will last far longer on the skin than other oils and provide more moisture and protection (even from the sun). It’s inexpensive and can be found at most grocery stores now. - Lavender essential oil – Lavender oil has been known as a healing oil for a few hundred years and is still very effective today. - Cocoa Butter – Like shea butter, cocoa butter is very moisturizing. It works wonders on fresh scars to minimize the appearance, and it smells great too. - Grapeseed Oil – Grapeseed oil has been found to be one of the oils that most closely resembles the collagen in our own skin. It’s been touted as a beauty secret used by the stars. No secret now, and you can get it at almost any grocery store.
- Oatmeal – While not actually an herb, it’s used in a similar way to add moisture to the skin. Grind finely, add enough water to make a paste, and spread on your face. Leave on for about 30 minutes before rinsing with cool water. You can do this every day, but if you use it as a scrub, limit its use to twice a week to avoid irritation.
- Potatoes – Potatoes contain vitamins B and C. Cut a potato in half, squeeze out the juice, and apply to your skin with a cotton ball. Rinse off after 15 minutes.
- Strawberries, Blueberries, or Bilberries – Crush a few berries and apply to your skin like a mask. Your skin will soak up all the nutrients like Vitamin C, antioxidants, and even salicylic acid. Salicylic acid is one ingredient known to clear blackheads from the skin.
- ACV – Apple Cider Vinegar will tone and balance the pH and oils in your skin. Use straight or dilute 50/50 with water. Apply with a cotton ball as a toner.
- Sugar – Sugar can be a mild exfoliator. Add a bit of oil, like grapeseed oil, and gently scrub your skin. Use brown sugar, as the crystals are smaller and less irritating.
- Tomatoes – Tomatoes contain high amounts of Vitamin C and are great for the skin. Wipe on with a cotton ball, wait 15 minutes, and rinse.
- Cabbage – Cabbage contains Vitamin C as well as sulfides. These help to kill bacteria and heal the skin. Steam cabbage until soft and blend into a smooth paste. Let cool and apply to the face. Rinse off after 15 minutes or so.
- Ginseng – While ginseng isn’t used on the skin, it’s taken internally. Ginseng is an adaptogen, helping your body to deal with stress. Stress can affect the skin in many ways, including causing breakouts.
- Turmeric – Often taken internally, turmeric can be also be used externally for inflammation and counteracting oxidization. Try to find a light colored tincture as large amounts can turn your skin yellow temporarily.
- Colloidal Silver and Colloidal Copper – Colloidal silver is antibacterial and can be used as a spray or a soap. It also comes in a gel. (Find a colloidal silver spray here.) Colloidal copper contains micro-particles of copper, which is essential to collagen and skin development. It can be found as a spray which you would use like a toner. It also comes in a soap. How to get clear skin in 5 easy steps
1. Start the clear skin diet and heal your gut
We’ve heard it all before – don’t eat that, cut down on this, eliminate that. What does all this actually do to help clear skin?
