6 Healthy Meal Delivery Services for People With Diabetes

Quick, premade meals can be helpful for people with busy schedules, but you’ll also want to be mindful of how this food has been prepared. Zeratsky cautions the meals are only as good as the ingredients used, and she says flash-frozen is best at preserving nutrients and vitamins.

Zeratsky says meal kits that provide raw ingredients in specific portions, interesting spices, and step-by-step recipes can be a good way to introduce high-quality ingredients in a way that’s deliberately portion-controlled and allows you to customize your plate. Some meal kits also let you choose organic options or specific proteins.

“What’s nice about some of the box meal kits is that for a lot of people, you can get fairly decent quality ingredients that are premeasured, and I think that can very much help with portion control,” she says. “Right out of the gates, they’re doing some thoughtful planning. It allows not only that convenience, but it allows them to not have to put so much mental effort into controlling portions, because it’s not as if they can go back for seconds or thirds.”

We researched six of these services to find out more about their offerings, their price structure, and why the company decided to focus on type 2 diabetes–friendly meals.

Here’s a look into the options that exist for premade, at-home delivered meals and delivered ingredient boxed meal kits (in no particular order):

1. Magic Kitchen

Magic Kitchen started as a service to offer healthy meals to busy families and seniors, but it expanded its offerings after customers started asking for diabetes-friendly menus. CEO Greg Miller says the business began in Northern California in 2005 to provide healthy, nutritious meals to seniors, especially those who were shut in.

“We have been serving special diets for about nine years now, and diabetic-friendly meals were the first area we offered special diet meals in,” Miller says. “This portion of our business has grown dramatically since we started our offering on these meals. Today the menu is very broad and covers every individual’s taste.”

Magic Kitchen’s registered dietitian–created menu for people with diabetes comes with a prepared and flash-frozen entree and two sides. The company offers lunch and dinner options, and each meal contains less than 65 grams (g) of carbohydrates, but the company says most meals stay between 25 to 40 g. Each meal is relatively low in sodium and has less than 700 milligrams (mg), but the company says most meals are below 500 mg.

A Taste of What You’ll Eat Meal examples include beef pot roast with red wine sauce, tangerine orange chicken breast, and salmon and vegetable linguini.

What You’ll Pay Pricing varies depending on how many meals you want per day. Seven meals (one meal daily) ranges between $75 and $85; 14 meals (two meals daily) costs between $150 and $165; and 21 meals (breakfast, lunch, and dinner for the week) ranges between $225 and $250. That shakes out to about $11 to $12 per meal.

2. Diet-to-Go

Diet-to-Go is a meal delivery services that offers four meal plans for home-delivered, premade meals. Their meal plans include a diabetes-friendly option and a keto approach. Meal plans include breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

One of their meal plan offerings, called Balance Diabetes, follows ADA guidelines on carbs and fat. The ADA generally recommends between 40 and 60 g of carbohydrates per meal. Another diet option, called Keto-Carb30, offers a carb-restricted diet of 30 net carbs per day. (Just be sure to talk to your healthcare team before trying keto, as it may pose health risks for some people, including those on diabetes medication.) Both diets offer meals focused on fish, chicken, and nonstarchy veggies.

Diet-to-Go CEO Hilton Davis says he started the company 27 years ago with the mission of providing meals for busy customers who followed health guidelines from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). As the company grew, it realized there was a need for diabetes-friendly meal services. Hilton says he wanted “to help people.”

“We have many success stories of people who were prediabetic and now they’ve gotten their blood sugar down, people who were diabetic and have gotten off medication,” he says. “To hear the stories and know the product we’re providing is helping people in that way, it gives you a good feeling.”

A Taste of What You’ll Eat The sample menu for the Balance Diabetes plan includes dishes such as blueberry pancakes and turkey sausage for breakfast, hummus pizza for lunch, and baked salmon with pineapple salsa for dinner.

What You’ll Pay Before tax, meals are $9.99 apiece. Frequency is five or seven days a week, and you can choose to get all three daily meals, or just lunch and dinner. You can get meals delivered or pick them up at a local health club. The company notes that nationwide there are more than 200 participating health clubs where you can pick up their meals.

3. MedStar Healthy and Territory Foods

MedStar Healthy was the brainchild of the MedStar Institute for Innovation, a fellowship of the nonprofit MedStar Health that focuses on creating innovations in medicine. A group of elite college students set forth to create prepared meals that would meet the needs of people with type 2 diabetes, says Mandy Dorn, program director of MedStar Institute for Innovation.

MedStar Healthy uses Territory, a food delivery service, for its meals. While Territory offers a slew of healthy meal options — even niche meal plans, like ones for new and pregnant moms — they offer MedStar Healthy’s options for customers in Washington, DC, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and the Dallas–Fort Worth area.

MedStar Healthy’s meals adhere to ADA and American Heart Association guidelines, are made by local chefs, are created by registered dietitians and MedStar Health doctors, are dairy-free and gluten-free, and are free of artificial ingredients. Each meal contains between 30 and 60 g of carbohydrates, between 350 and 600 calories, less than 750 mg of sodium, and a maximum of 7 g of saturated fat.

A Taste of What You’ll Eat On MedStar Healthy, you’ll get meals such as corn-and-black-bean pizza, gingered beef and broccoli, and Mediterranean quinoa salad.

What You’ll Pay According to the Territory Foods website, you can choose among three packages: Boost Size, which comes in at $9.95 per meal; Standard Size, which is priced at $12.95 per meal; and XL Size, which costs $15.95 per meal.

4. Martha’s Senior Gourmet

Martha’s Senior Gourmet offers at-home, premade meals for delivery in California, Arizona, Texas, and Florida, focusing on the dietary needs of seniors. Its menu plans range from vitamin K–restricted to gluten-sensitive diets, and they offer meal plans for people with diabetes and meal plans for people with diabetes who have kidney problems.

The company was inspired by a founder’s great aunt, Martha, who loved cooking for seniors in her community. Her passion for providing healthy food that fit seniors’ needs spurred her great nephew to create a company that offered a variety of healthy food that is approved by registered dietitians, according to the company.

The diabetes-friendly menu focuses on medical nutrition therapy to provide moderate-sized meals that are low in fat and calories. Their meals focus on lean protein, with at least one fish meal a week, whole grains, and nonstarchy vegetables. Martha’s Senior Gourmet offers lunch and dinner meals, such as chicken teriyaki, turkey chili, and grilled salmon. Their meals contain between 400 and 600 calories, and the sodium levels range from 300 to 600 mg.

A Taste of What You’ll Eat The meal plans for people with kidney issues and diabetes are also modified to control for potassium levels. Some lunch examples include a roasted chicken sandwich and chicken tortilla soup, and dinner menu examples include meat lasagna and cauliflower shepherd’s pie.

What You’ll Pay Pricing is highly customizable based on volume, frequency, and meal type. It ranges from $284 a week for three meals per week for four weeks to $584 a week for seven meals a week for four weeks.

5. Sun Basket

Sun Basket began offering diabetes-specific meals in early 2018, marking the company’s second dive into health-specific meal plans. In 2017, Sun Basket began offering meals that are certified by the American Heart Association. The diabetes-specific meals were created in conjunction with the American Diabetes Association, Sun Basket CEO Adam Zbar told CNBC in May 2018.

The meals focus on high-fiber ingredients and lower sugar and salt to help people with type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes with managing their blood sugar. All of the meals marked as diabetes-friendly are under 700 calories and have at least 15 g of protein. Less than 10 percent of each meal’s calories are from added sugar, and each meal contains between 20 and 100 g of carbohydrates per serving. Saturated fat consists of less than 10 percent of total calories, and meals contain no more than 700 mg of sodium.

A Taste of What You’ll Eat Sun Basket offers cook-at-home meal options that can be eaten for lunch or dinner, including turkey–black bean tacos, green harissa sole, and seared pork with blueberry-apricot sauce and sauteed greens. Meals come with a protein and a side, plus typically a tapenade or vegetable-based topping for the protein.

What You’ll Pay Meal plans cost $11.99 per serving at three meals a week for two or four people. Meals that follow ADA health advice are the same price as every other meal on the website.

6. BistroMD

BistroMD delivers premade meals for people with diabetes that are reviewed by a licensed doctor. The BistroMD meal plan aims to reach the goal of food that is balanced and nutritionally proportioned for people who struggle with weight loss, without being “bland and boring,” according to the BistroMD website.

CEO Ed Cederquist writes that he aims to combine inspiration from chefs and local farmers markets with medically sound nutrition to create his company’s meals. He founded the company with Caroline Cederquist, MD, a weight loss physician in Naples, Florida, and Cederquist’s wife. Their team includes registered dietitians, chefs, and nurse practitioners.

What You’ll Pay Diabetes-friendly meals cost $179.95 for seven breakfasts, seven lunches, and six dinners for seven days; $149.95 for three meals a day for five days; $149.95 for lunch and dinner each day for seven days; and $119.95 for lunch and dinner each day for five days a week. Most meals contains less than 25 g of net carbohydrates, contains lean protein, avoids all simple sugars (such as white bread), and focuses on complex carbohydrates.

A Taste of What You’ll Eat The menu includes dinners such as lasagna with garden marinara, hickory smoked barbecue beef with potatoes, and turkey breast with cranberry chutney and rice. Lunch includes options like chicken cacciatore and sloppy joe with cabbage slaw, and breakfast includes options like turkey sausage and cheese frittata. The snack menu ranges from desserts like chocolate gelato and midday munchies like mixed nuts with peanut butter and chocolate — there’s even a coffee option called “java boost” that is a midday protein shake.

What is Diabetes?

In people with diabetes, blood glucose levels are higher than normal because the body either does not produce enough insulin or cannot use insulin properly. The body needs insulin to turn the food we eat into energy. There are three main types of diabetes, Type 1, Type 2 and Gestational Diabetes, but other rarer types also exist.

Type 1 diabetes is an auto – immune disease that occurs when the pancreas cannot produce enough insulin because the cells that make the insulin have been destroyed by the body’s own immune system.

Type 2 diabetes is the most common form of diabetes, representing approximately 90% of people with diabetes in Australia. With Type 2 Diabetes the pancreas makes insulin, but it does not work as well as it should and upsets the balance of glucose in the body.

Gestational Diabetes is a form of diabetes that occurs in around 5% of pregnancies, and is diagnosed when higher than normal blood glucose levels appear for the first time during pregnancy.

Over 21 million Americans – that is about 7% of the population have diabetes. There is, however, a gap in the food market! It seems we can accommodate for paleo, gluten-free, and low-calorie, but there don’t seem to be the same options for diabetic friendly meals. These diabetic-friendly meal delivery services are bridging that gap.

Originally, I wanted to compile a list of meal kit services for diabetics, delivering pre-portioned ingredients like Blue Apron, but only found one! A few can be customized to fit into a diet suitable for someone with diabetes, but so far, it’s just the one service that specializes this category of meal kits. Luckily, I found a bunch of others that deliver ready made diabetic friendly meals you can get delivered.

Of the list below, my personal choice would be Diet To Go. They are very transparent with their meal options, and have the choice of 5 or 7 day plans. BistroMD is also a very popular service, with delicious meals that’ll keep your blood sugar in check.

Our bodies break down the carbs we eat into glucose and sends them into the bloodstream. Usually, the pancreas should produce insulin to transfer the glucose to body cells. For people with diabetes, however, the pancreas is either unable to create adequate insulin or, the cells are unresponsive to the insulin. The inadequate insulin production leads to high blood sugar levels.

It is therefore essential for people with diabetes to watch the carbohydrates they eat (including sugar!). They must avoid causing spikes in their blood glucose levels. Diabetes also makes the body susceptible to cardiovascular conditions and preventing them should also be factored into the diet.

Prepared meals specializing in fare designed for folks with diabetes takes out the stress of always picking the perfect diet-friendly foods, and then making them into a delicious meal. Usually, you have to choose one or the other – healthy or tasty. When someone else cooks, they can figure out how to combine both! This type of food service is also very relevant to (although not limited to) seniors , who often face multiple health conditions. Bistro MD

Bistro MD offers a diabetic plan with many options for how many meals you receive.

Since 2005, Bistro MD has been delivering healthy, ready to eat gourmet meals right to the doorstep. You can choose from their gluten-free, diabetic, menopause, and silver plans, which all cater for different audiences and needs. You also have the ability to customize your program, by choosing the meals that you want and specifying any other dietary needs.

All of the meals in the diabetic plan were designed by doctors, with the needs of diabetics in mind. The meals are all low in sodium and contain no simple sugars that can cause spikes in blood glucose levels. Most also contain 25 grams (or less) net carbs per serving. The service also creatively combines lean proteins and complex carbohydrates, with the protein helping to keep blood sugar levels stable.

The meals from Bistro MD are satisfying and there is a large variety of dishes that you can choose from. The plan also promotes snacking, with the idea that this helps stabilize blood sugar levels. These can be ordered through the company as well.

You can see the various meals on the site, although information is limited until you actually sign up (and pay). This makes it a frustrating experience all around. I never understand why companies hide their pricing like this and I wish that they wouldn’t.

The main plan options are the Full Program and Lunches & Dinners. The seven-day version of the Full Plan costs $134.96 (was $179.95 previously) and provides you with seven breakfasts, seven lunches and six dinners (the missing night is where you practice what you have learned).

Diet to Go

Diet To Go might be focused on weight loss but they also have a plan specifically for diabetics.

Diet to Go is a prepared meal delivery service designed for weight loss and specialized dietary needs. The company has four different meal plans to choose from, which are Balance, Balance-Diabetes, Carb30, and Vegetarian. The Balance-Diabetes plan is most suitable for diabetes and follows the nutrient recommendations of the American Diabetes Association.

As such, it is suitable for people who have diabetes and those who are trying to avoid the condition. The other menus could also be useful. For example, the vegetarian menu is a powerful way to increase the plants in your diet, while Carb30 allows you to lower your carb intake. While you should consult your doctor first, some people feel that low carb diets can be useful for diabetes.

All of the menus are designed to be heart healthy and to promote weight loss. Both outcomes are critical for people with diabetes or pre-diabetes. Diet to Go works hard to ensure the meals they prepare are low in sodium, carbs, and cholesterol. Some are lower in fat than others, based on the overall goals.

Regardless, the meals contain less than 45 grams of carbs and more than 15 grams of lean proteins per meal. The food delivery service also allows you a free diet analysis where you enter your weight and height details. You then get diet suggestions based on your BMI.

You can choose between receiving meals five days each week or seven days. In either case, you can have two meals per day (lunch and dinner) or three meals (breakfast, lunch and dinner)

Fresh n’ Lean

Fresh n’ Lean offers multiple meal plans and a wide range of healthy dishes to choose from.

Fresh n’ Lean is a prepared meal delivery service that ensures you get organic and healthy meals delivered to your home or office. They have a strong focus on plant-based meals, although some of their plans do include meat as well. Fresh n’ Lean menus get inspiration from the Asian, Continental, South American, and Mediterranean cuisines.

You can choose between their A la Carte and weekly meal plans. For their weekly meal plan, you can choose from the one, two or three meals per day options.

The various meals and plans are very suitable for weight loss, and for reducing heart disease risk. They are also low in sodium and in fat, making them a perfect choice for anyone with diabetes. The company is also ideal for pre-op and post-op patients as well as athletes and weight trainers, especially as some plans are high in protein. If you have diabetes, you can call their toll free number to talk to a dietitian and customize your order based on their advice.

The food delivery service gives you nutrient-packed food low in salt, sugar, fat, and carbohydrates. However, there are no raw vegetables in their meals. They also offer tiny portions that may sometimes not be adequate when you are active. You also have to call to cancel an order; there is no provision for that on their website.

The pricing for the A la Carte meals starts at $9.33 per meal but varies depending on the meal chosen. The selection changes over time as well. The price for the meal plans also varies, from $7.95 to $11.33 per meal, depending on the plan that you choose.

However, those prices only apply if you choose three meals in a day. If you want less than that, the average cost per meal changes too. The system is a little frustrating to get used to but it does offer flexibility. One more thing – you don’t get to choose the meals on a plan. Instead, you get whatever is on the menu for that week.

Magic Kitchen

Magic Kitchen meets a wide range of different dietary needs and allows you to create your own meal plans with them directly.

Magic Kitchen meal delivery service came to be in 2005 in North Carolina. Since then they have been delivering healthy low sodium, low sugar and carbohydrate controlled meals. They are most well known for the way they provide for various dietary needs, more than most other companies.

For example, Magic Kitchen offers selections that are diabetic friendly, portion controlled, dialysis-friendly, heart healthy and ones that are ideal for the renal diet (CKD 3&4). They also have dairy-free, gluten-free and low-fat offerings, while catering for seniors as well. Magic Kitchen uses symbols to make it clear which diets individual meals are suitable for.

With all of those areas, the dishes aren’t the most amazing or gourmet meals that you’ll find. But, they are still appealing and reasonably priced.

The diabetic menu meals all have less than 700 mg of sodium per serving, with most being below 500 mg. The carb content is never more than 65 grams and most meals have between 20 and 45 grams of carbs. The meals tend to have one main dish and either one or two sides. They can be ordered individually or as part of a plan. The prices vary but most meals are between $11.50 and $12.50 per serving.

The meal programs are flexible – and you talk to the company directly to set up what you want. Magic Kitchen estimates that a diabetic meal plan with one meal per day would cost between $75 and $85 per week. The cost would be between $150 to $165 for two meals per day, and $225 to $250 for three meals per day. Because this aspect is personalized, you could easily specify the types of food that you want as well.

Compared to other food delivery services, their preparation instructions are very detailed. However, it is challenging to reorder meals you love since they run out of stock very often. Their meals can also be very bland, but adding extra seasoning is also an option. This is to be expected with any service catering for such a range of customers. After all, some people have more sensitive palates.

Prices for their A la carte meals start at $10.25 per meal and are dependent on the meal you choose. For a meal pack with seven servings, the price starts at $75. There is also a family bundle with two meals each with six servings and its price starts at $166.

Mom’s Meals

The dishes from Mom’s Meals aren’t the most amazing out there but this is an inexpensive company that covers many different dietary needs.

Barb Anderson started Mom’s Meals in Nevada Iowa. The prepared meal service is family owned and is USDA certified. The premise behind the meal delivery service was to lend a hand to parents and relatives living far away. It is also ideal for individuals desiring convenience. Patients recuperating at home and those managing a disease will also find the food delivery service helpful, particularly because of the wide variety of programs.

They have gluten-free, vegetarian, diabetic-friendly, heart-healthy, renal, cancer supports, low sodium as well as pureed menus. The food delivery service also has programs for, individuals and caregivers, agencies and their clients, and healthcare providers. They also cater for Medicaid beneficiaries. You can choose from the seven, 10, 14 or 21 meal packages. You also have a selection of over 60 meals.

Mom’s Meals provides chef tips on food seasoning if the food is not to your taste. While they have many options, it isn’t always possible to avoid allergens. This happens because meals are already packaged when you order them. Their heating instructions are also not very clear, which can be an issue.

Meal prices begin at $6.49 per meal, but pureed meal prices start at $7.49 per meal. Shipping is $14.95 per order. The meal package prices vary with the meals chosen but start at $649 per week for three meals a day.

Overall, the meals are less impressive than many other companies. But, they make up for this by being very inexpensive and supporting so many different types of diets. The meals are still much healthier and tastier than a freezer meal from the local grocery store.

Martha’s Senior Gourmet

Martha’s Senior Gourmet has some unusual aspects and is particularly relevant if you’re ordering meals for someone else.

The meal delivery service delivers to Northern and Southern California and South Florida. Their specific options cater to healthy lifestyles in general along with the specific needs of diabetic, renal, renal diabetic, congestive heart failure, gluten-free and Vitamin K restrictive diets. For diabetics, they follow the Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) model. MNT is high in nutrition, low in fat and calories and emphasizes on fresh vegetable and fruits as well as whole grains.

They provide a monitoring report at your request. The monitoring is especially beneficial if you are subscribing for an invalid or a senior. The report covers time taken to open the door, general appearance and change in mobility and speech patterns.

It also includes recognition and cognition. The Martha’s Senior Gourmet also donates excess food to senior or non-profit organizations. Their main downside is their high meal prices. For example, some of the plans calculate out to $20 or more for a single meal. The meals also don’t look as amazing as other companies either, although that could be partly due to poor photography. Regardless, the advantages of the service are easy to see, especially if the meals are for someone else.

Their healthy meals comprise of four to six oz protein, 3.5 oz starch, two oz steamed, roasted or grilled vegetables and eight oz fresh fruit or vegetable salads. You can take their five day trial period plan to try out the meal service or subscribe to a meal plan. The programs are available for three to seven days a week.

They bill their meals plans on a four-week basis. There are many different plans in place. Some cater for one person, starting at $284 for four weeks (three meals a week).

Others cater for two and start at $556 (three meals a week). You can order meals for up to seven days a week and can choose either just dinner or lunch and dinner. There are also weekly plans, which start at $120 for five days of just dinner or $195 for lunch and dinner. There are many other prices as well.


Nutrisystem can work for weight loss and for people with diabetes. But, their products are more processed than you might expect.

Nutrisystem is a different type of prepared meal service and it mostly focuses on weight loss. With this company, you pay for a plan, which provides you with some prepared meals, along with meal plans and shopping lists for the rest.

The idea is to get you thinking about healthy food and preparing options that are good for you. As with companies like Weight Watchers, there is plenty of support along the way. The style is particularly powerful for people who have just started to think about diabetes, as the service can teach you all that you need to know.

They have multiple meal plans to choose from, including ones that are specific to diabetes. In each case, you choose based on gender and whether you want their favorites menu or to choose your own. The meals rely heavily on lean proteins and fiber.

They are also low in carbs while avoiding the use of artificial sweeteners, colors, or flavors. Despite this, the meals are often more processed than what you find with other companies and many are similar to frozen dinners for the grocery store.

While they may be healthy enough and get good reviews the meals are far from impressive. The system also has members relying on snacks like heavily processed bars, ice cream sandwiches and cheese puffs. The snacks can still be considered healthy but they’re very different than the fresh food that other company’s produce.

Their weight loss and management programs do work and there are many options to choose from. However, the meal delivery service forces you into the second month; if you cancel before that they charge you $125. If you are unhappy with a product, it will cost you $20 to ship it back. In that sense, it almost acts like a gift service. Send a Meal does have nutritionists and chefs to help determine which meals are healthy. But, most don’t come with nutritional information, which is frustrating.

The style means that there is a wide selection of meals to choose from, including sets designed for diabetics and for anyone watching their sodium. There is also variety. For example, some of the plans give you meals for one, while others will serve an entire family. If you are unsatisfied with your order, you can get a refund or replacement for your order.

The style allows your meals to be customized for many different situations, including the requirements of a diabetic diet. This also allows for more complex dietary needs, such as low-salt, gluten-free, vegetarian, and diabetic. Such combinations aren’t realistic with most other companies.

The price also remains the same, regardless of the specifications that you make. So, you don’t pay any more for a diabetic menu. Because the meals are individually prepared, they should taste more homemade than what many other services provide.

However, as the name suggests, the service is local to California, specifically the Greater Los Angeles area. They have a full list of delivery locations on their site. The service is also more expensive than competitors.

I’ll admit it, I don’t much like NutriFit. The company has a complex website and they like being vague about pretty much everything. There aren’t that many images of the actual meals they provide either, and you have to sign up to even see menus.

Despite this, the company is a good choice for people with significant dietary needs. NutriFit simply allows more customization than most – which is partly why they’re so vague as well. You’re able to tailor your plan based on pretty much anything, including multiple dietary needs or restrictions. NutriFit also specifically says that their plans can help manage and support diabetes.

Basically, there are two plans on offer. The first is Essentials, which allows for basic customization. The other is Premium. That one is more comprehensive and allows you to change just about everything. Both of them should be suitable for diabetes. However, the company mentions that the Essentials plan will only work for diabetes management in some situations, based on other requirements.

Based on standard pricing details, the Premium plan isn’t much more expensive, although dinners do cost around $10 more. The meals aren’t cheap to begin with either, starting at $17.95 for Essentials on a 28-day plan and $19.95 on a daily plan.

These are just estimates though. The phrasing on the site suggests that price is based on your specific plan. To get exact numbers, you’d need to talk to the company. But, either way, this isn’t a cheap option. It may be worth the price if you have multiple dietary needs. If not, some of the other companies on this list may be better.

If your choice for lunch at the office is the submarine sandwiches that are ordered in, or a quick trip to the closest fast food restaurant, you might find another option is in the freezer.

1. Sodium Content: Look again! Many of the food companies have reduced the sodium content by revising their recipes and using fewer preservatives.

How to Choose a Frozen Meal

1. Carbohydrates: Do you know your carbohydrate goal per meal? A guideline might be 45 grams for females, 60 grams for males. Check the carbohydrate grams on the label and see how it fits into your plan. If the sugars are 6 grams or less (listed under carbohydrate), it is OK. Remember, one carbohydrate choice is 15 grams, so you could divide the total carbs by 15 to get the number of starch servings in the meal.
2. Sodium: If 2,300 mgs is the recommended daily limit (and if you are not limited more because of a medical condition), about 600mg sodium for the frozen meal is a good guide (less than 1/3 of your daily intake). You can also check the % Daily Value on the far right column.
3. Calories: Most type 2 diabetics are also trying to lose weight. Select the “diet” frozen meals that are 350 calories or less. If it looks like too little food, cook some low carbohydrate vegetables, like green beans or broccoli, and add it to the meal. It looks like lots more if you empty the dinner on top of a plate of broccoli. Adds very little calories and carb, but lots more fiber and nutrition.
4. Fiber: We need 20-35 grams of fiber a day. Select the meal with brown rice, whole grains, beans, and some veggies. The higher the fiber listed, the better (also slows the rise of blood sugar). You can always add more vegetables.
5. Fat: Because you have chosen the “diet” version of a frozen meal, the fat gram total is reasonable. We should consume 30% or less of our diet from fat, and these meals don’t even come close. Take a closer look at the type of fat. You want a minimal amount of saturated fat, and no trans fat. The protein source and the sauces determine the amount of saturated fat, but you will find that most meals are just fine (again, beats the saturated fat in the ribs and fries for lunch!).

The frozen meals don’t work as well for dinner, especially if you are feeding a family, or typically eat a larger meal. You can compliment the frozen meal at dinner with a side salad, whole grain roll or some fruit to be more satisfied. Research shows that frozen meals have a positive role in successful weight loss. If you are a good cook and prefer to make and freeze your own meals for a later time, that’s great! You can also make an educated selection of the grocery store options.

There is also a coupon up this month for Blue Apron and Home chef for $30 off their delivery box.
Green chef, located in Hamburg, Germany, offers ketogenic diet meal delivery service. Certified diabetes educators are often accused of being non-keto dieters. In this article, we will also profile the keto diet meal delivery services offered by Green chef.

In addition, we will evaluate the carbohydrate and overall nutrition of recipes from meal kits we have tried. At our house, we started with Hello Fresh. We got a free box from a health educator colleague.

During the week that we had three free meals for two people, my husband and I liked it. It was easy, delicious and convenient when it was delivered following our return from a trip to visit family in Erfurt, Germany. We didn’t have to shop for multiple ingredients that go into a nice dish prepared at home.

This week, we got a new coupon to re-up with Hello Fresh. It was $30 off a box, so we ordered again. Once again, we enjoyed what was delivered to us, and cooked two of the two person meal kits, one with steak and one with chicken, for our dinner guests Saturday night.

They were delicious. The Creamy Dill Chicken dish had about the right amount of carbohydrates recommended for diabetes. We will look at carbohydrate and fat contents for several of the meal kits available, and discuss those that may be a little bit on the high side for carbohydrates and saturated fat for diabetes.

There are ways that you can tweak these recipes to suit your needs with diabetes, and not break your carbohydrate bank. Where there’s a will, there’s a way. We will show you how.

What’s the difference between a meal kit and a meal program?

Meal kits come with the recipes and fresh ingredients to cook meals yourself at home. They cut out the time spent planning, and shopping for the meal. There is still meal preparation and cooking to do, although with most meal kits, it’s simple.

Meal programs come ready to be heated and eaten. In some cases, they can be specifically tailored to your needs by dieticians. We will break down the hype here, because there are many meal kits and programs out there.

Honest review of Hello Fresh from our perspective

Hello fresh comes in three separate bags for three separate meals to cook at home for the week.

Our guests raved about it, so we gave them a free box card. Now I am faced with an inbox full of offers to try. Not such a bad deal, with the holidays less than a week away. We could use the coupons to try other recipes, and take the fuss out of planning and preparation.

For the negative reviews about Hello Fresh, some box recipients have indicated spoiled contents. We haven’t had that issue. The meal plan options are limited. There is a regular meal plan, and a vegetarian meal plan. Many entrees have too many carbohydrates for diabetes, but there are a few good selections with about 35 grams of total carbohydrates per serving. Still some people with diabetes would want to keep it lower than that amount at a meal. There are more options at the 60 grams carbohydrate level, which is on the high end of the American Diabetes Association’s recommended carbohydrates for men with diabetes (45 to 60 grams. Women should stay between 30 and 45 grams total carbohydrates at meals).

I have narrowed it down to three more meal delivery kit options to try in the coming weeks. Sun Basket was offering $50 off. That’s $40 off the first basket and $10 off the second basket. I haven’t tried them yet, but the meals look along the similar lines as those by Hello Fresh.

The third meal delivery service to try was Martha Stewart’s Martha and Marley’s Spoon. They are offering a $30 off coupon this month, so I think I’ll give it a try as well. It’s easier because I don’t have to come up with new and innovative recipes to eat healthier while eating delicious foods.

For the fourth meal service, we will try Blue Apron. With any luck, and many likes, comments and shares across your social media, the editor will have me to review these three meal kit delivery services in a separate article for you. Recipe cards were easy to follow, and portions were reasonable, though carbohydrates and fats were too high for some recipes for diabetes.

The back of the recipe card gives step-by-step instructions, with photographs for the novice cook.

Now is a great time to try the new meal kit delivery services. With all of the companies in competition with one another, the consumer wins with free meals. You can get three tasty meals for two people delivered, and ready within an hour for as low as $30. That’s just about $5 per meal.

So far, we haven’t determined whether we will keep up the meal delivery service unless we have a coupon. It’s up to you to decide if the full price of meal delivery services at $10 and up for a meal fits in your budget, or if you want to get them on occasion when the price is right.

Meals were moderately easy to prepare, and did require some skill in the kitchen. We didn’t find it difficult, as we both know our way around a kitchen. Some recipes were improvised. We might have added a little white wine to the gravy, for example.

Meal preparation is simple, and most anyone should be able to follow the directions.

Gravy in meal kits can be left off to decrease carbohydrates and saturated fats. All meals are cooked in a healthy manner, either baked or pan broiled. You can leave off the butter in buttered steak to cut the saturated fat. Generally, vegetables are in balance, prepared in a healthy manner, and carbohydrates are somewhat in line with what is needed for diabetes. Some recipes need a little tweaking on carbohydrate portions to be within reason for diabetes.

Recipes in the Hello Fresh box that were mildly too high in carbohydrates for diabetes are easily modified. This can be remedied by cutting what were ample portions down by one-fourth to one-fifth the portion amount.

Overall, while the Hello Fresh meals were delicious, they were not exactly diabetes friendly as some of the food was high in carbohydrate and fat contents. If you are someone who can play around with numbers and don’t mind putting some extra time in your meal prepping, Hello Fresh could be your thing. However, if you want your meal to be catered to your exact needs, Hello Fresh may not be the best option for you.

What if you don’t want to cook meals?

What kinds of meal delivery kits are out there for people with diabetes?

This finding was surprising. There are meal kit delivery programs specifically geared to people with diabetes. They are a bit pricy. Let’s see what a few of them offer in the way of progress on the road to diabetes self-management, convenience and customer service, as well as ease of meal preparation and affordability.

The article will go over cancellation policies, reviews from customers who have diabetes and have tried the kits themselves and whether your food stamp will cover these delivery kits.


Plated comes in at about $12 per meal. Customers rave about their delicious and visually pleasing menu options. The produce is said to be fresh and organic. Negative comments for Plated are the lack of low carbohydrate choices in their meal plans. There is about one out of the group of choices for the week that will fit into your carbohydrate counts. With that said, you can tweak the carbohydrate portions.

Plated also tends to run out of options. Nutritional information is given in calories, not total carbohydrates. On some weeks, subscribers report that certain dishes are no longer available. For the lack of options for diabetes, it’s not getting high marks.

Home chef

Home chef costs about $10 per person, per meal. It has a variety of low carbohydrate options that are good for diabetes. The problem may be delivery service area, as it seems to deliver only in the northeast.

There are also paleo and low carbohydrate options on the menu. There are about three keto diet selections per week, for all our keto dieters with diabetes out there.

Checking nutritional facts online wasn’t an option, but recipe cards are sent with meals, which can be downloaded on the website. At the most, you will find about two to three keto dieter meal options every week.


Gobble is a bit pricy at $13.95 per plate. There are no low carbohydrate options either, so this one is not so great for people with diabetes.

Blue Apron

Blue Apron, as it turns out, is not so carbohydrate friendly either. The company only offers one menu option, which includes vegetarian selections. You will have to tweak your portions and carbohydrates if you use the Blue Apron meal kit service.

Martha and Marley Spoon

Martha and Marley Spoon is a new meal delivery company from Martha Stewart. They only have regular meal and vegetarian plans. Some options looked low carbohydrate, but nutritional information was not readily found on their website. Simpler menu items of meat (steak) and salad may fit into your carbohydrates needs.

Green chef

Green chef is the highest priced of all the meal kit options on the market that we reviewed. They do offer an entire paleo menu. Everything is certified organic and sourced. Some options are as low as 20 grams of carbohydrates. Delivery areas are limited, but the company is to expand their deliveries in the U.S..(1)

Overall meal kit impression

Most of the meal kits are similar, although some do a better job of organizing things for you than others. The most popular ones are short on low carbohydrate options, where you need to adjust portions accordingly. All seem to offer coupons, and an easy out if you decide you don’t want to continue receiving the service.

Meal delivery programs for diabetes


This diabetes specific home meal delivery kit service is a bit pricy. At as low as $89 for the first week, it makes you wonder what the second week would possibly cost. The answer to that is $119.95 for five days, with two meals per day for lunch and dinner. Prices go up from there. The full program for seven days including seven breakfasts, seven lunches and six dinners (with one on your own night) costs regularly 179.95, however, the first week is on sale for $139.95 right now.

However, for the added cost, you get some added benefits. One pro is the free support you get from a dietician. Recipes are evaluated for nutritional content by professional dieticians, with proper balance of nutrients. When you’re not sure how to prepare healthy meals day in and day out while getting all the nutrition that your body needs, it could be useful.

There is the assurance that you have the right meals for your nutrition that also fit in with your diabetes management goals. While convenient, having a dietician to call and ask questions could be very helpful.

Because the meals contain the right amount of all nutrients for your diabetes, your blood pressure will be in a normal range along with your cholesterol numbers within recommended ranges, and blood sugar levels and A1C in target. You will have the right amount of healthy fats and fiber, and good carbohydrates. If we’re honest with ourselves, we know that this is like having a personal meal planner daily, and how useful that might be with diabetes.

It’s like having a personal chef, in that the meals from BistroMD are pre-made entrees, but delivered fresh. Much of the thought and shopping that goes into a great home cooked is skipped, while healthy and diabetes-friendly meals are delivered and enjoyed.

There are five plans available, but for our purposes, we are concerned with the diabetes plan. Prices vary depending on how many meals you want to have delivered, and how many days a week you want them delivered.

You can order meal plans online, which can be great if a person with diabetes has a busy schedule with their diabetes and day to day life in general. BistroMD program was designed by physicians, and helps people with diabetes to lose weight by offering a consistent and healthy meal plan.

When you sign up for BistroMD online or on the phone, a representative can explain everything about the program to you. You don’t need to get under any contract or obligation, and you can cancel the service at anytime, as long as you cancel it by the Wednesday before the next week’s delivery. Food will come with nutritional information. Meals are from fresh, organic ingredients. The company can customize meals for you.

Fresh N’ Lean

At a cost of about $28 for all three meals of the day, and free shipping, Fresh N’ Lean offers diabetes-friendly meals that are delivered fresh, not frozen. You refrigerate them when you get them, which can be consumed throughout the week.

There are several meal plans available. They are low in sugar, salt, with no preservatives or added colors. Reviewers seem to find meals tasty, and the price for three meals per day is not over the top. (3)

Are the companies available nationwide?

Some companies have limited areas where they can delivery. Call the individual companies, or check their websites to determine if delivery is availabe to your address.

Are the meals planned by dieticians and experts in diabetes management?

Some meal companies do have dieticians and medical personnel that plan menus. Check with each individual company to see how they determine nutritional value and carbohydrate counts for their meals, and ask for the nutritional information before you sign up.

Would they need the specifics of my diabetes to tailor meals specific to my needs?

The only way that a certain company will know how to tailor your food delivery to your individual needs is if you call and talk to a representative. They will be able to tell you what they can do in the way of customizing the best meals for your needs with diabetes.

Are the ingredients used fresh, organic and local?

The websites for individual companies offer information as to where their foods come from, whether they are organic, gluten-free, locally sourced and sustainable, and more. Check with each company if you have further questions about where their food comes from, any additives that might be in them, or questions about nutritional value of meal plans. All of the companies will generally provide you with meal cards, or nutritional information about the foods that they deliver to your home. Often the website has this information.

We hope you have enjoyed rambling through the somewhat unchartered territory of meal delivery services. It can make your life with diabetes much easier if you can fit the cost into your budget. At any rate, you can give it a try at a lower price. You will have to call and cancel the day you get your discount box, so that they don’t ship you a box for the following week.

Some meal services will require a full seven days to cancel. There were no questions asked when we called to cancel our Hello Fresh meal delivery. Eventually, they will send you more half off coupons.

This way, you can try all the different ones, weigh the pros and cons, and decide if meal delivery kits are right for you. You will also then know with the help of the nutritional information and recipe cards included which ones fit in your diabetes plan, and which ones you should modify, or leave alone.

Thanks to a new meal-kit delivery service, I know that the albacore tuna I ate the other night was caught off the coast of Washington by the crew of the Coyote. I wasn’t aboard the vessel, but information about the boat, its captain, and the port where the fish landed was included on the meal-kit packaging provided by Sun Basket.

Like Blue Apron, Plated, and HelloFresh, Sun Basket is a meal-kit delivery service. The difference, the company says, is that its ingredients are organic, with “grass-fed, antibiotic-free pastured meats and sustainable seafood from ranchers and fishermen we trust.” Sun Basket also caters to specific diets, offering a few options every week for paleo people, vegetarians, and the gluten-intolerant. And now, Sun Basket also offers diabetes-friendly meal plans that have been approved by the American Diabetes Association.

This latest carbohydrate-conscious plan encourages home chefs to practice healthful cooking techniques and exercise portion control, but without sacrificing taste. Recipes in this plan highlight nutrient-rich, high-fiber foods such as whole grains, fruits, and vegetables. All meals are 700 calories or less, have 10 percent saturated fat from calories or less, contain at least 5 grams of fiber, and claim less than 10 percent of calories from added sugar.

“Healthy eating is not one-size-fits-all,” said Adam Zbar, CEO and co-founder of Sun Basket. “More than 30 million Americans have diabetes, and an additional 84 million have prediabetes, so we wanted to create a diabetes-friendly meal plan featuring amazing flavors that also meets the recommended nutrition goals for people with diabetes. In collaboration with the ADA, we look forward to helping Americans with diabetes make healthy cooking easy, delicious, and fun again.”

Sun Basket also offers recipes that meet the American Heart Association’s Heart-Check guidelines. As part of the company’s Lean & Clean menu, these weight-management meal plans promise to help home chefs eat lighter and cleaner, and are less than 500 calories, and contain less than 3.5 grams of saturated fat and less than 0.05 grams of trans fat.

Healthy, however, doesn’t mean bland. Recipes include chicken chili verde with tomatillos and jicama salad, sole in parchment with a warm date and apricot salad, and Mediterranean tomato-braised cod with oregano.

The Sun Basket recipes are a little light on the details.

For $75 a week, you get a box with the ingredients to make three meals — in other words, you’re still doing the cooking — each with portions sufficient for two people. There’s also a family-of-four option for $140. That breaks down to almost $11.50 per meal, per person for the second option and a dollar more for the two-person plan. Blue Apron is closer to $10, HelloFresh is $11.50, and Plated is $12 for two-person, three-times-per-week boxes.

The week I tried Sun Basket, I made risotto, salad niçoise, and tandoori-style chicken. The meat came sandwiched between ice packs, while everything else was packaged in individual brown bags. Each recipe was on cardstock, about the size of half a piece of 8 ½-by-11 paper. There was a picture of the dish and a description of it, along with the cook time, calories, and number of servings, on one side. On the other was a list of everything I needed — basically listing everything in the box, plus salt, pepper, and oil from my pantry — and the directions.

If meal-delivery systems are aimed at people who like to cook but don’t do it that often, then the Sun Basket recipes are a little light on the details. Maybe it’s because they’re trying to cram everything onto a half-sheet of paper, but I definitely had to Google how to cook and cut up okra on my own.

If there’s one major concern people have with meal kits, it’s the amount of packaging.

There seems to be the expectation that you have a couple pairs of hands in the kitchen when it came to the promised “time to cook.” The salad said 25 to 30 minutes, and the other two dishes said 30 to 40. In terms of cooking alone, all three took me closer to 50 minutes or an hour, and it felt like I was constantly in motion, moving back and forth between the cutting board and stove as I prepped the tuna while keeping an eye on the green beans.

All the food turned out really well, but if there’s one major concern people have with meal kits, it’s the amount of packaging that comes along with them. Like its competitors, Sun Basket says its packaging is recyclable (and the produce bags are compostable), but not all of it may be accepted by your local recycler, so you’ll have to check. At the moment, it doesn’t look like Sun Basket has a program to recycle for you, as Blue Apron does.

Overall, I thought the recipes were interesting and the produce and food high quality. And there are a few advantages to having everything you need delivered to your door: I tried to make one of Sun Basket’s other recipes earlier this week, only to find my local grocery store was out of two of the ingredients.

Here’s what to keep in mind as you’re shopping at the store.

Know your numbers.

In general, look for products that are under 400 calories, 5 g saturated fat, 600 mg sodium, and 50 g carbohydrate per frozen meal.

Get the nutrition facts panel.

Package descriptors such as “lean,” “fit,” or “smart” may give dishes a health halo they don’t deserve. Look beyond the marketing lingo and review the Nutrition Facts label on each box. Nutrient amounts such as sodium and carbohydrate may vary widely within a product line.

Check sodium levels.

Many frozen meals are swimming in sodium-some topping 1,000 milligrams. That can be bad news for blood pressure. Opt for frozen meals with 600 mg sodium or less, which is about a fourth of the daily limit of 2,300 mg.

Choose meals that will satisfy.

Protein and fiber make meals more filling. Aim for at least 15 grams of protein for meals containing meat; at least 10 g for vegetarian meals. Choose dishes with at least 3 g fiber-look for meals that contain whole grains, beans, and vegetables, which are all good sources of fiber.

Avoid empty calories.

In general, avoid frozen dinners containing fried or breaded meats, lots of cheese, or rich sauces. These ingredients add calories and saturated fat, but provide few nutrients.

Round it out.

A dish with just 180 calories may seem like a win for your waistline. But, you’ll likely feel hungry later on. You may need to add a serving of brown rice, a side salad, and/or fruit to complete your meal.
