Hair. We all love healthy, flowing locks but there are so many things that can impact the health of our hair and hair growth. I’ve always prided myself on my hair. It’s been one of my favorite features about myself my entire life.

Then I did what I’ll call rule #1 of what NOT to do for healthy, growing hair. I bleached it, then dyed it pink. After that hairstyle, in a moment of poor decision making, I got a ‘beach wave’ perm. Never – I repeat NEVER – get a perm no matter what.

The final nail in the healthy hair coffin? I dyed it dark with permanent dye. Permanent dye, as I’ve come to learn, will completely destroy your hair.

So what was the result of bleaching, perming, and then dying my hair? About ⅓ of it fell out, and what was left was damaged, dry as hay, and all but completely destroyed.

I’d gone from loving my locks to mourning their loss, and I knew it was time to do research and find out exactly what I needed to restore my hair to its original glory – which included how to promote hair growth + how to cultivate happy, healthy hair.

In this article, we will first explore 5 methods for hair growth (and regrowth). Then we will learn 5 additional ways to cultivate healthy hair (and keep it that way).

Here’s How to Promote Hair Growth

Based on my extensive research for any and all ways to promote hair growth, here are 5 key methods to help your hair grow:

1. He Shou Wu

He Shou Wu is a Chinese herb that has many impressive health benefits, ranging from immunity support to DNA repair, hair growth and healthy aging. Part of the healthy aging is through tonifying kidney and liver function, which can also impact your hair growth.
I found many supporting articles and studies that attested to how effective He Shou Wu can be for reversing hair loss. About 6 weeks into taking it, I am seeing a noticeable improvement in my hair growth.

2. Nettle Tea

Nettle is an herb that also boasts a lot of health benefits, including hair growth. It’s actually one of the oldest treatments for hair loss by treating dandruff, combating hair loss, and promoting new hair growth.
Nettle can be taken in capsule form or brewed as tea. I’ve been brewing looseleaf nettle tea in big batches and refrigerating it in glass jars. It has a light, refreshing taste and you can add lemon juice for flavor or even that trusty He Shou Wu powder for added benefit.

3. Scalp Massage

Stimulating your scalp is key for healthy hair. The scalp directly impacts the health and growth of your hair, so massaging it will stimulate circulation and as a result, hair growth. Another way to increase circulation to the scalp is with inversions (think headstand, handstand, or even Downward Dog Pose in yoga).

4. Essential Oils

Never underestimate the power of essential oils! These highly potent plant concentrates can aid in hair growth. Just be sure you’re using high-quality essential oils, since not all brands are created equal and many have fillers or added ingredients.
The following essential oils in particular are believed to stimulate hair growth: lavender, lemon, thyme, and oregano.

5. Castor Oil Hair Masks

Hair masks are a great way to promote healthy hair, and while there are so many products and DIY recipes out there, I’ve found that organic castor oil is one of the better bets. It has Vitamin E, protein and fatty acids, plus it’s antibacterial and antifungal.
Castor oil is really thick and sticky, so you can add a little coconut oil to make the application process easier. I also add 10-15 drops of essential oils (see #4) to the mask and let it sit for at least an hour and sometimes even overnight (just wear a shower cap to avoid a big mess).

Now that we’ve learned five effective ways to promote hair growth, let’s take a look at how we can maintain healthy hair.

6. No Chemicals!!

When it comes to healthy hair, the last thing you want to do is mess it up with nasty chemicals. Chemicals can really damage your hair and yet so many hair products contain chemicals and harsh ingredients like parabens, sulfates, dyes, fragrance, alcohol etc that will dry out, strip, and ultimately wreck your hair.
Make sure you’re checking your labels and try to use organic, natural products whenever possible.

7. Organic, pH Balanced Shampoo + Conditioner

Piggybacking on #6, you want to stick to organic and also pH balanced shampoo and conditioner. Why pH? Because your scalp and hair have a natural pH balance that gets thrown off through all the products we use and even the water we wash our hair in.
I did some research and started using DermaChange shampoo + conditioner and it’s made a big difference in my hair’s texture, vibrancy, and overall health. It’s vegan, organic, pH balanced (and restores your hair back to its natural pH levels of 5.5), and affordable.

8. No Heat

As women, most of us have become dependent on heat for drying and styling our hair, but it’s time to let that go. If you can, let your hair air dry. If not, use your hair dryer’s coolest setting, and/or at least wait until it’s mostly air dried first.
Replace the curling or styling iron with rollers or braids and experiment with new and different hairstyles that don’t require heat to style. Trust me, it’s worth it and you’ll notice a big difference in the health of your hair.

9. Braid Your Hair Before Bed

As it turns out, even rolling around on your hair all night can create damage and breakage. If you want to avoid the frizzy mess of bed head and the negative side effects it causes for your hair, try braiding it before bed.
Added bonus: if you braid your hair when it’s damp, you’ll have a cute wavy/curly look that didn’t require any heat to style (see #8). Finally, braiding can also stimulate the scalp which in turn can aid in hair growth (see # 3).

10. Wash Your Hair Less

Washing your hair all the time is not ideal for healthy hair and hair growth. Your body produces natural oils that are nourishing for your hair follicles, and overwashing strips those oils away. Additionally, washing your hair less means drying, styling, and using products less – all of which will help your hair grow and stay healthy.
I’ve found a great balance in washing my hair twice a week and doing an oil mask once a week. My hair looks happy and healthy, and the maintenance is completely manageable.

Healthy Hair and Stimulating Hair Growth – The Takeaway

The final piece of advice I’ll offer is in the overall care and maintenance of your hair. Put a little coconut oil or argan oil on the tips after you wash your hair. This helps reduce split ends and dried out hair.
Brush your hair regularly but only brush your hair when it’s dry to prevent damage. Brushing your hair is a great additional way to stimulate your scalp (see # 3).
Finally, try not to stress too much about the health or current state of your hair. Stress impacts all aspects of your body’s functions and health overall, including hair growth! Following these tips will help your hair grow and cultivate happy, healthy hair.

As hair is made of protein, ensuring you have enough protein in your diet is crucial for making hair strong and healthy. If you are not consuming enough protein in your diet, your hair is likely to become dry, brittle and weak. Extremely low protein diets may result in restricted hair growth and even hair loss. Iron is an especially important mineral for hair and too little iron is a major cause of hair loss. The hair follicle and root are fed by a nutrient rich blood supply. When iron levels (serum ferritin) fall below a certain point, you may experience anaemia. This disrupts the nutrient supply to the follicle, affecting the hair growth cycle and may result in shedding. Animal products such as red meat, chicken and fish provide iron with a high bioavailability, meaning the iron is readily available to the body. Vegetarians can raise their iron stores by including lentils, spinach and other leafy green vegetables such as broccoli, kale and salad greens.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C aids the absorption of iron so foods high in vitamin C are good to eat in conjunction with iron-rich foods. Vitamin C is also an antioxidant so is used readily by the body. The best sources are blackcurrants, blueberries, broccoli, guava, kiwi fruits, oranges, papaya, strawberries and sweet potatoes. Vitamin C helps in the production of collagen which strengthens the capillaries that supply the hair shafts.


Omega-3 fatty acids are important fats our body cannot make itself, and therefore must be obtained through our diet. Omega-3s are found in the cells that line the scalp and also provide the oils that keep your scalp and hair hydrated. Include oily fish such as salmon, herring, sardines, trout and mackerel and plant sources like avocado, pumpkin seeds and walnuts.

Vitamin A

Vitamin A is needed by the body to make sebum. Sebum is an oily substance created by our hairs sebaceous glands and provides a natural conditioner for a healthy scalp. Without sebum we may experience an itchy scalp and dry hair. Include animal products and orange/yellow coloured vegetables which are high in beta-carotene (which makes vitamin A) such as carrots, pumpkins and sweet potatoes.

Zinc and selenium

Scalp protection involves other important minerals, notably zinc and selenium. A lack of zinc can lead to hair loss and a dry, flaky scalp. Fortified cereals and wholegrains are a good source of zinc along with oysters, beef and eggs.

Vitamin E

The sun can damage our hair just like it can damage our skin so ensure you eat foods rich in vitamin E to provide protection for your hair. Nuts are nutritional powerhouses, providing zinc and selenium as well as vitamin E so try to include them as part of a balanced diet.


Biotin is a water-soluble B vitamin. Too little biotin can cause brittle hair and may lead to hair loss. Include biotin rich foods such as wholegrains, liver, egg yolk, soy flour and yeast.

Natural treatments

Make your own hair mask for a deep, nourishing treatment every two weeks. Whisk an egg yolk and mix with half a mashed avocado and a spoonful of honey. Massage onto damp, clean hair and leave for 30 minutes before rinsing thoroughly.

The hair cycle…

Each hair is attached to the scalp via a follicle. There are between 100,000 and 350,000 hair follicles on the human scalp. Each follicle grows its hair for an average of 1000 days (three years) and then rests for a period of around 100 days (three months) before being shed and a new hair begins to grow. This pattern of active growth followed by the resting period varies significantly from person to person and is influenced by age, diet and our state of health.

What is hair made of?

Hair is primarily made of a protein called keratin that also makes nails and forms the outer protective layer of skin. Each hair consists of three layers:

1. The cuticle – the outer layer, thin and colourless. It acts as the protective layer.
2. The cortex which contains melanin, which is responsible for hair colour.
3. The medulla, the innermost layer which reflects light.

Through thick and thin…

The length of hair that you are able to grow is controlled by the duration of the growing phase, which varies between individuals. We all lose some hair naturally each day when we brush, comb or wash it and as long as new hairs are being produced at the same rate as those falling out, there will be no difference in hair volume. However if the rate of shedding exceeds production the net result is hair loss or thinning.

A variety of factors can alter the normal hair growth cycle and cause temporary or permanent hair loss including medication, chemotherapy, exposure to chemicals and toxins such as nicotine, hormonal factors, thyroid disease, stress or nutritional factors.

Hair loss

We shed hair every day as part of our body’s natural process. Hair loss can happen at any time of life for any number of reasons. When hair loss becomes a concern, it is important to determine the cause before seeking out the appropriate treatment.

Potential non-dietary factors for hair loss include:

  • Age influences hair strength. As we grow older, there is a tendency for our hair fibres to become finer and shorter and we may experience hair loss or greying. It is normal for women to experience changes to their hair post pregnancy and as they enter the menopause.
  • Genetic hair loss is the most common hair loss problem affecting men and women. The onset is usually during the mid to late 20s and is often unavoidable. Women experiencing baldness may want to consult a trained medical professional.
  • Repeatedly losing and regaining weight can take its toll on your hair, causing it to become brittle and lacking lustre. Crash diets are often short in essential vitamins and minerals and over long periods of time this type of dieting will reflect in your hair.
  • Hormonal imbalances including thyroid dysfunction can produce significant changes to hair growth and quality. Thyroid function can only be assessed by blood test. If you are experiencing considerable hair loss, please consult your GP.

A note on alopecia areata (AA)…

This condition can result in total loss of hair from the head and sometimes loss of body hair also, although most sufferers develop a few isolated patches of hair loss, which may correct themselves without any treatment. Since the cause is unknown, treatment is hard. Talk to your GP if you are concerned about hair loss.

With aisles and aisles of products aimed to improve the look and condition of your hair, it can be easy to forget that one of the most important things you can do to keep your strands at their best is to provide them with proper nutrition.

That’s right—just as your skin benefits from a healthy diet (like the rest of your body, for that matter), eating well and getting some key nutrients ensures that your hair gets what it needs to promote growth and prevent breakage and dryness. Your hair’s structure is made of hardened proteins called keratin. When your protein stores are low, generation of this important building block slows and hair grows slower and weaker. Lean meats, like chicken and turkey, and fish like tuna, halibut and tilapia are great high-protein foods to include in your diet. Low-fat mozzarella and cottage cheeses, tofu and quinoa are also terrific options to consider.

Lentils are a good source of biotin—a nutrient that has been shown to promote hair growth. When biotin interacts with cell enzymes, it helps produce amino acids—compounds that form those ever-important proteins mentioned earlier. Researchers have even found that too little biotin can lead to hair loss. Carrots, almonds, walnuts and cauliflower are other smart choices to consider. If you’re interested in taking a supplement, speak with your doctor for a recommendation.

Your hair follicles receive nourishing oxygen from the iron in your red blood cells. While the level of iron in your blood may be considered normal, there is still a chance that you may have low ferritin—the “bank” of iron your body keeps to draw on when it needs it. Low ferritin has been linked to slow or halted hair growth, as well as shedding. Do your best to avoid this by eating iron-rich foods, such as oysters, clams, lean beef, eggs, tuna, soybeans, spinach, tofu and garbanzo beans. Be sure to have your ferritin levels tested before considering a supplement.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids
Omega-3s are found in the cell membranes of your scalp’s skin, and in the natural oils your scalp and hair produce to stay hydrated. Getting enough of these essential fatty acids can help prevent dry scalp and help your hair grow and shine. Eating wild salmon and other fatty fish like striped sea bass or mackerel twice a week will ensure a healthy dose of omega-3s. Or, if you’re not a fan of fish, incorporate some plant-derived sources into your diet, like flax seeds, walnuts, soybeans and canola oil.

While your locks are made primarily of protein, they’re also made of water and need to maintain their moisture to avoid dryness and breakage. In addition to turning to a leave-in conditioner or other hydrating products to soften strands, make sure you’re also replenishing yourself by drinking plenty of H20 each day. Eating water-rich fruits and vegetables helps hydrate your mane as well.

B Vitamins
B6, B12 and folate help create red blood cells, which carry oxygen and nutrients too all of the cells in the body, including the ones in the scalp and hair follicles. If you’re not getting enough B vitamins, the cells can starve, making your hair more prone to shedding, slower growth and breakage. Pork tenderloin is packed with these vitamins, but if you don’t eat pork, load up on beans, chicken, oatmeal and low-fat dairy foods, which are also good sources.

Vitamin C
This essential nutrient does a couple things to help promote healthy hair: Vitamin C helps absorb iron. It’s also used to form collagen, a structural fiber that makes up the connective tissue in the body, which hair follicles require for optimal growth. Bell peppers, thyme, parsley, kale, Brussels sprouts, oranges and strawberries all pack a vitamin C punch.

This mineral helps strengthen your hair follicles, and prevent hair loss, by binding its proteins. It also plays a role in your oil glands functioning properly, which protects your locks from dryness and dandruff. Shellfish, like oysters, crab, lobster, clams and mussels all have high zinc content. In fact, just three ounces of oysters (about two medium-size oysters) has a whopping 493 percent of the daily recommended value of zinc. Sunflower seeds, peanuts, pine nuts, beef, lamb, pork and cereals with whole grains and bran are some other zinc-rich foods to choose from.

Maybe she’s born with it, maybe it’s a smart haircare routine. For some women, enviably long hair just happens, but for the rest of us, tweaking certain aspects of our day-to-day beauty routine must be made. 1. Get frequent trims — yes, really

4. Eat the right foods

Having long, strong hair doesn’t just depend on which products you put on your hair; it also depends on what you put into your body. “To promote hair growth, you need to ‘feed’ the hair from the inside,” explains Dr. Francesca Fusco, an NYC-based dermatologist. “Try increasing your protein intake with foods like fish, beans, nuts, and whole gains.”

If you’re not a meat-lover, you should still aim to maintain a diet high in protein. Dr. Fusco warns that women who don’t get enough of it often experience “more shedding.”’s nutritionist Jaclyn London, MS, RD, CDN adds that foods high in protein as well as vitamins A, C, and E, minerals like zinc and iron, and omega-3 fatty acids can contribute to healthier hair.

5. Avoid heat styling tools

“Stop over-styling your hair,” warns celebrity hairstylist Ken Paves. If you must use heat, Paves recommends decreasing the temperature and always using a heat protectant — otherwise, you risk damaging your hair, leading to breakage and frizz.

6. Skip the daily shampoo

By now, you’ve likely heard all the testimonials attributing great hair to going “no ‘poo,” but do you know why it actually helps your hair? “Shampooing your hair two to three times a week allows your natural oils to penetrate your hair, allowing it to hydrate and repair itself,” explains Paves.

7. Add a vitamin to your A.M. routine

If your diet isn’t supplying you with enough nutrition, a supplement could make a world of difference. “Look for a multivitamin that’s formulated and labeled ‘For Hair, Skin and Nails,'” advises Dr. Fusco. “Those contain important vitamins like biotin and C and B vitamins that support hair health.” Bonus: You may get better skin in the process!

8. Finish your shower with a cool rinse

A super steamy shower isn’t just bad for your skin — it’s also rough on your hair. “Turn the water temperature down when cleansing,” recommends Paves. “And rinse with cool water to help seal the cuticle and strengthen your hair before styling it.”

9. Be careful when you brush wet hair

Hair is especially susceptible to breakage when it’s wet, but if you absolutely must get some knots out post-shower, make sure to use a brush that will go easy on your strands. “Using a Tangle Teezer or Wet Brush is key,” says Davey Partain, stylist at Kennaland salon in Brooklyn.

He also notes that the technique is just as important as the tool. “Start gently brushing from the ends and gradually work your way up. And don’t just brush the top layer — brush the hair underneath as well.” If traditional brushes aren’t for you, opt for a wide-toothed comb instead.

10. Start using minoxidil

Pick up a can of Women’s Rogaine, says April Franzino, Good Housekeeping’s beauty director. “The active ingredient, minoxidil, is FDA-approved and proven to help stop hair loss and promote hair regrowth with continued use according to packaging instructions.” For a more targeted solution, pick up Hers 2% Minoxidil Topical Solution and use the dropper applicator to focus on more specific problem areas.

11. Stop doing trendy “cleanses”

Diet companies may try to convince you that a “cleanse” will turn your whole life around, but Dueñas strongly advises against them. “Doing a cleanse is terrible for your hair because you’re depriving your body of nutrients,” he warns. “After doing a cleanse even for a week, you’ll notice slower hair growth and lackluster locks.”

12. Sleep on a silk pillowcase

Getting better hair in your sleep is possible — all you need is to switch up your pillowcase. “Silk is easier on hair — it helps avoid tangles and breakage,” says Jesleen Ahluwalia, M.D., a physician from Spring Street Dermatology in New York City. The less breakage your hair experiences, the longer your hair will be. Type 4 Hair

Get it wet less often.

Water makes hair swell from the inside, which forces the cuticle up. “When that happens over and over again, you get frizz and breakage,” says cosmetic chemist Randy Schueller. “Don’t wash your hair more than you have to. Change the way you think about conditioner.

We all know they smooth frizz and make your hair softer and shinier. But if you own a blow-dryer or flatiron, you should also know that conditioners are critical to heat protection. “It’s just as important as heat-protectant spray, if not more, because conditioner is better at coating the hair,” says Wilson. Skim labels for ingredients that won’t rinse off—words with “methicone” or “polyquaternium” in them—or just get one of our favorites: Dove Quench Absolute Conditioner. Leave it on for at least five minutes, and then rinse with cool water. “This allows for more residual conditioner to be left on the hair,” she says.


Add layers.

Since heat is the worst thing for your hair, double down with a heat-protectant spray.
