Q: I recently read a celeb’s blog about the importance of colon cleanses. How do I know if my colon needs cleansing?

A: Trust me, it doesn’t. As someone who looks inside people’s colons every day-yep, that’s my job!-I can tell you that for most people, the colon does a perfectly good job of eliminating waste. It does not need any outside help to ‘cleanse’ itself. In fact, colon cleanses might not be as ‘cleansing’ as you’d hope. They can cause unpleasant side effects like abdominal pain or diarrhea. And if you have a chronic medical condition or are on medication, you shouldn’t go there-the cleanse can make your condition worse. If you feel like you’re backed up in there, you can get things moving without having to try this extreme method. First tip: Eat plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables and drink a lot of water. Fiber supplements are another option. They add bulk to the stool, which helps move things out of your colon. Still not getting the relief you want? Talk to your doctor. There might be another cause-like a thyroid condition or even a polyp-to explain your constipation. Just whatever you do, dump the cleanse. I promise you, it won’t live up to the celeb hype.

The idea of detoxing is everywhere. The wellness world is buzzing about why you need to cleanse your body along with hundreds of different ways to do so. From juice cleanses to Whole30 to sipping bone broth – there’s a detox out there that you are bound to love.

The world we live in just keeps getting more toxic. The question is not if you should do a detox; it’s when. So start listening to your body, and if you are experiencing any one of these, it’s a sign to start your detox method of choice.

1. You have an insatiable sweet tooth.

Constant cravings are a big sign that something is off. When processed foods are a staple in your diet it can put your blood sugar and leptin hormones on a roller-coaster ride which increases your cravings even more. When you detox you replace those junk foods with whole, clean food sources filled with hormone-balancing nutrients.

2. You are experiencing digestive distress.

This is one of the most obvious signs that you need a complete diet overhaul. Symptoms such as bloating, gas, and diarrhea are not only uncomfortable they are a major red flag that things are not functioning properly. A detox will give your gut a break and hit will hit the reset button on your digestive health.

3. Allergies are no longer “seasonal” and happen often.

Your sinuses are an extension of your digestive system. So it would make sense that if you have poor gut health your immunity is going to be weak as well.

4. You don’t feel healthy despite eating clean.

Detoxing can help those who already eat healthy too. Even the healthiest foods can aggravate and flare a person up. Doing an elimination diet can give your body a break and help you find exactly which foods cause you problems. A cleanse can also provide you with food medicines to help flush out toxins that build up over time and contribute to health problems.

5. You have skin problems.

Toxin buildup doesn’t do our skin any favors. Too many toxins can overload your liver (your body’s main detoxing organ) and create buildup. Since your skin also eliminates waste through sweating, all of those problems can appear on the surface in the form of acne and rashes.

6. You are always exhausted.

Being in a constant state of exhaustion is not normal. It’s adrenal fatigue. Toxin buildup, inflammation, microbiome imbalances, or stress can cause problems with your brain-adrenal communication which elevates your cortisol and leaves you always waiting for your next nap.

7. You aren’t as mentally sharp.

If you lack the ability to focus or struggle to remember various details on a regular basis, you’re dealing with brain fog. When your body can’t eliminate toxins fast enough, they build up and increase inflammation. This inflammation leads to damage to your protective blood-brain barrier, also known as “leaky brain.” A decrease in inflammation will relieve the oxidative stress in the hypothalamus of the brain. A detox will help you flush out all of those toxins.

8. Your joints are always sore.

Ongoing inflammation does a number on your joints and muscles. If you aren’t pushing yourself at the gym but are constantly sore and achy you most likely have chronic inflammation that needs to be addressed.

9. You’re constantly stressed.

Not all detoxes need to be food-based. In my functional medicine clinic, I see stress as a contributing factor to all types of health problems. Stress can act like a trigger for everything from depression to autoimmune conditions. A food based cleanse can be great to relieve physical symptoms of stress but detoxing from outside stimuli such as social media or toxic relationships as well can do wonders for your mental state.

10. Just the thought of a detox gives you anxiety.

When the idea of giving up certain foods makes you sad or anxious it’s a sign of an unhealthy emotional attachment to food. For some, food is used as reward or punishment rather than the healthy fuel your body needs to thrive. Detoxing can help you determine if your eating habits have emotional roots. If so, you can then take steps to change your relationship with what you eat.

11. You struggle to lose weight.

One of the first things I tell my patients is, “We need to get healthy to lose weight, not lose weight to get healthy.” Your microbiome contains a vast collection of bacteria. When you don’t have enough good bacteria, bad bacteria takes over and leads to inflammation and a slowed metabolism. Start healing your gut and your weight loss will be a by-product of optimal health.

12. Your hormones are out of whack.

Hormone problems can be anything from fatigue to weight-loss resistance to irregular periods. Each of these health problems can be traced back to chronic inflammation due to poor diet and toxins.

13. Your breath and BO aren’t so fresh.

You know that expression “You are what you eat”? Well, in this case, you reek what you eat. Since your body is always trying to eliminate toxins body odor is a sign that toxins have reached an overwhelming level. So put down the deodorant stick and pick up some green juice instead!

14. Your sleep patterns are off.

Underlying hormonal issues like adrenal fatigue and leptin resistance can lead to irregular circadian rhythms. By eliminating toxins and reducing inflammation you’ll be getting eight interrupted hours of shut eye before you know it.

15. You are anxious and depressed.

Depression and anxiety oftentimes stem from excessive inflammation. “Leaky brain” triggers an inflammatory-autoimmune response against your brain and nervous tissue. You may find that during a cleanse you begin to feel a sense of calm.

16. You often get cold sores.

About 90% of people have had a cold sore at least once in their life with 40% of people dealing with recurring flare-ups. We have the herpes simplex virus HSV-1 to blame for this. And don’t worry, this is different than the HSV-2 strain that causes genital herpes! The HSV-1 virus lays dormant most of the time waiting to strike. How frequently should one get a colonic? Any times that are particularly beneficial?


As with many other practices that can be beneficial, there are people who use colonics in the wrong way. I mostly recommend colonics to people who are doing a cleanse, and only during the program: Under these conditions the body may need to expel greater amounts of mucus-y waste fast, which can otherwise cause constipation. Some people have certain conditions that make it hard for the colon to eliminate its accumulated waste, and they benefit from colonics, but are also generally under the care of a gastroenterologist.

But it’s obvious that many people are getting colonics regularly even outside the context of a cleansing program. Some people get colonics when they feel a little bloated or constipated. This can be a problem because even though it will make them feel better in the short term, it creates a vicious cycle by which the real reason for the bloating or constipation is never addressed and these people end up relying on colonics for waste elimination. This may even end up altering the intestinal flora and harming people’s health instead of helping. Also, if someone has diverticulae or other lesions in the colon, which is the case in certain inflammatory diseases, they can end up with perforations, a life-threatening emergency. So the colonic therapists that I refer people to are carefully selected by me. I first try them personally to see their equipment, technique, and bedside manner before I send anyone to them.

They also help detoxify the liver and protect the body from the toxins in the environment. You can boil or steam the veggies, add them in soups or slightly sauté with a little butter or olive oil


Ginger has antiseptic properties and is beneficial as it stimulates digestion. It can be added to any juice or can be eaten directly. Add one teaspoon of ginger juice and honey, mix it in one cup warm water. This mixture can be consumed twice a day. You can also make a smoothie using:

  • 1 tablespoon of ginger (peeled)
  • 1 apple (sliced)
  • A cup of spinach
  • 1 carrot (sliced)
  • Blend all these ingredients with 1 cup water and your smoothie is ready. Drink it once a day to ensure proper functioning of the intestinal tract.

Juices made by using apple and lemon

Apples and lemons are both rich in nutrients that improve the digestive action such as vitamins C & A, antioxidants, and Fiber. You can make delicious juices from these fruits:

  • Take ½ cup Apple Juice, add 2 tablespoons Lemon juice and a teaspoon of ginger juice.
  • Mix it in ½ cup of warm water. You can drink this mixture once a day to help detoxify the colon and encourage proper digestion.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Unfiltered apple cider vinegar helps flush out waste from our body while retaining the useful bacteria. It can be taken along with honey to cleanse the colon and restore the digestive system.

  • Mix raw apple cider vinegar and honey in equal quantities (2 tablespoons)
  • Mix it in one cup water and drink it once daily. It will not only remove the toxins but has tons of other benefits such as preventing diabetes and lowering bad cholesterol.

Eating Fiber-Rich Foods

Fiber is excellent for keeping your bowels healthy and cleansing the colon by eliminating waste out of our body. You can include grains such as beans, lentils, quinoa, oatmeal or vegetables like peas, artichoke, Brussels sprouts that are high in fiber. Raspberries, mango, figs, and coconut also help nourish the colon.

Sea Salt and Water

Water plays a significant role in detoxifying our bodies. When the colon is dehydrated, it is easier for the toxins to stick inside and form a build-up. You need to consume at least 2-2.5 liters of water every day to ensure optimum functioning of the colon.

  • Add one teaspoon of sea salt to half liter water and drink it before breakfast (before you eat anything else). Drinking the mixture encourages bowel movement and improves digestive health.

Chia and Flax Seeds

Both these seeds are superfoods that are high in fiber. They also contain Omega 3 fatty acids that reduce inflammation in the colon and remove the built-up toxins. You can add a teaspoon of the seeds in water and drink the mixture, make a pudding or sprinkle them over salads.

  • Soak a tablespoon of chia seeds in one cup water for 5 to 10 minutes so the fiber can perform its optimum function by absorbing water
  • Mix the seeds in about 1 cup of yogurt
  • Consume this mixture 4 times a day for about 4 weeks to cleanse the intestinal tract.

There are different over the counter colon cleansing supplements also available in the market. Performing a colon cleanse is vital because it doesn’t only eliminate bacteria and improves digestion, but also promotes weight loss and prevents various diseases.

  • The third method is coffee enemas that are self-administered. Make sure you consult a naturopathic practitioner before implementing this method.

Any of these methods can be effective in cleansing your colon. However, studies supporting these practices are limited. But a natural colon cleanse could have certain benefits.

What Are The Benefits Of A Natural Colon Cleanse?

A natural colon cleanse is believed to help expel undigested substances from your body. Cleansing your colon enhances your vitality by:

  • helping you lose weight
  • improving your overall mental and physical health
  • improving the functioning of your immune system

Medical Treatment Options

Conventional colon therapy involves cleansing the colon using water or laxatives. Colon hydrotherapy uses water to remove the contents of the colon (1). Other methods employed are barium enema, intravenous pyelography, etc., especially in the preparation for intestinal surgery (2).

Home Remedies For Colon Cleansing

1. Garcinia Cambogia

Supplementation with Garcinia Cambogia (Malabar tamarind) suppresses your appetite and increases your metabolism. This is due to the presence of a compound called hydroxycitric acid (HCA). Garcinia Cambogia not only helps flush out all the toxins from your body but may also help control body weight and treat inflammation and glucose tolerance (3), (4).

You Will Need

Garcinia Cambogia supplements (500-1000mg)

What You Have To Do
  1. Consume Garcinia Cambogia supplements.
  2. You can also add Garcinia Cambogia to your daily diet.
How Often You Should Do This

Consume Garcinia Cambogia supplements 1 to 2 times daily.

2. Apple Juice

The pectin (fiber) in apples has insoluble and soluble properties (5). It helps in bulking up your stool and makes it easy to pass. This may aid your weight loss efforts. Additionally, apples may also prevent and inhibit the growth of colon cancer cells (6), (7).

  • 1 apple
  • 1 cup of water
  1. Take an apple and cut it into pieces.
  2. Blend the pieces with a cup of water.
  3. Consume the apple juice.
  4. After 30 minutes, drink a glass of water.

Do this multiple times daily for at least 3 days.

3. Lemon Detox Drink

Lemons are rich in vitamin C that enhances metabolism and may aid detoxification (8). The nutrient is also a natural antioxidant that protects your body from free radical damage (9). As per a study, lemon detox diet (predominantly involving lemon juice) could also reduce body fat (10).

  • 1/2 lemon
  • 1-2 teaspoons of honey
  • A pinch of salt
  • 1 glass of lukewarm water
  1. Squeeze half a lemon and add the juice to a glass of lukewarm water.
  2. Add salt and honey and mix well.
  3. Consume this lemon detox drink.

Drink this every morning on an empty stomach.

Note: Since lemon is acidic, rinse your mouth with plain water after you consume it to prevent erosion of the tooth enamel.

4. Yogurt

Yogurt is a natural probiotic that may help restore the beneficial gut flora (11). The intestines contain lots of good bacteria, the absence of which may cause a series of digestive and health problems. Yogurt is also a rich source of antioxidants (12). The daily consumption of yogurt helps in maintaining the level of probiotics in your body, which, in turn, could help in colon cleanse (although direct research in this aspect is lacking).

Consume a bowl of plain yogurt.

Have plain yogurt 1 to 2 times every day with no added sugar or fruit.

5. Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar has antioxidant and antibiotic properties that can be beneficial for a healthy gut and colon (13). The antibiotic property of apple cider vinegar is due to the presence of bacteria called acetobacter that aid digestion and the proper functioning of your gut. The acidic nature of apple cider vinegar adds to the acid in your stomach, eliminates toxins, and could help you lose weight (14).

  • 1-2 tablespoons of organic apple cider vinegar
  • 1-2 tablespoons of honey
  • 1 glass of warm water
  1. Add apple cider vinegar to a glass of lukewarm water.
  2. Add honey and mix well.
  3. Drink this concoction every morning.

Do this once daily.

Note: Rinse your mouth with plain water after you consume this drink as it contains honey, and excess of it on your teeth could contribute to dental cavities.

6. Raw Vegetable Juice

Drinking juices extracted from raw vegetables is quite helpful in cleansing your colon and detoxifying your body. It could also help with weight management (15, 16, 17).

Any one of the following veggies: spinach, beetroot, carrot, tomato, cucumber

Blend any or a combination of the vegetables mentioned above.

Several times during the day.

Note: Avoid canned or ready made juices as they lack the nutrients and minerals available in actual juices. Also, try to use the juice from organic vegetables.

7. Sea Salt Water

Intake of salt water increases your bowel movements and helps expel various toxins, bacteria, and accumulated feces from your colon. The sodium in the salt pulls water from your tissues into your intestines. Salt water colon cleansing is also comparatively safe and ensures that your body doesn’t lose too many electrolytes (18).

  • 1 tablespoon of unrefined sea salt
  • 1 glass of water
  1. Add a tablespoon of unrefined sea salt to a glass of water and bring it to a boil.
  2. Cool and drink this solution in the morning.
  3. After consuming the saline water, massage your stomach gently in a downward direction, towards your colon.

Drink this solution once every morning on an empty stomach.

Note: Be prepared for a possible flushing action on your intestines with several loose bowel movements.

8. Ginger

Ginger contains a bioactive compound called gingerol that possesses antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties (19). It is often used to treat digestive problems and reduce weight. You’ve probably heard of it for treating the nausea of seasickness or car sickness. Ginger also promotes colon health and aids digestion. It may also play a role in cleansing your colon, though more research is needed to understand the mechanism (20), (21).

  • 1-2 inches of ginger
  • 1/4 cup of lemon juice
  • 2 cups of warm water
  1. Extract two teaspoons of ginger juice using a small juice-press.
  2. Add this to two cups of hot water.
  3. Add the lemon juice and stir well.
  4. You can divide this solution into two or more parts and consume it throughout the day.

Drink this solution throughout the day.

Note: Lemons are acidic, so it is a good idea to rinse your mouth with plain water after you consume the drink.

9. Magnesium Citrate

Magnesium citrate is an osmotic laxative. It softens the stool and causes frequent bowel movements. This is more effective when used with sodium picosulphate (22). It may also aid weight loss and promote overall health.

  • 2-4 teaspoons of magnesium citrate powder
  • 1 glass of warm water
  1. Add magnesium citrate to a glass of warm water and mix well.
  2. Drink this solution every morning.

Do this once daily.

Note: Only take this amount of magnesium citrate for one week because increased bowel movements may cause mineral loss.

10. Flax Seeds

Flax seeds are rich sources of omega-3 fatty acids (23). The daily consumption of flax seeds is a sure shot way to cleanse your colon due to the combined bulking effect and laxative effect of its compounds. While the omega-3s are wonderful for your overall health, the seeds also contain antioxidants and fiber that could help increase your bowel movements. This way, it may help flush out the toxins from your body (24), (25).

  • 1 tablespoon of powdered flaxseeds
  • 1 glass of warm water
  1. Take a tablespoon of ground flaxseeds and mix with a glass of warm water.
  2. Consume this mixture 30 minutes before you have breakfast and before going to bed.
  3. You can also add some honey for flavor.

Drink this mixture twice a day.

Note: Keep ground flax seeds in the freezer as they may go rancid very quickly.

11. Aloe Vera Juice

Aloe vera can help increase bowel movements (26). The presence of bioactive compounds and antioxidants imparts exceptional detoxifying and laxative properties to aloe vera, which can help cleanse your colon (27), (28).

  • 200 mg of aloe vera gel
  • 1-2 cups of water
  • 2 teaspoons of lemon juice
  1. Add two teaspoons of lemon juice to a cup or two of water.
  2. Add 200 mg of aloe vera gel to this mixture and blend well.
  3. Refrigerate the aloe vera juice for 3 to 4 hours and consume it.

Drink small quantities of the prepared aloe vera juice multiple times a day.

Note: Lemons are acidic, so rinse your mouth with plain water after you have this drink.

12. Baking Soda

Baking soda is alkaline, which helps balance the pH of your stomach. As per anecdotal evidence, baking soda has laxative properties that may help treat indigestion and cleanse the colon.

But do exercise caution, as consumption of baking soda in excessive amounts can cause metabolic abnormalities and hemorrhaging (29).

  • 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda
  • 1 glass of warm water
  1. Mix half a teaspoon of baking soda with a glass of warm water.
  2. Consume this solution every morning.

Drink this solution once every morning.

Note: Baking soda neutralizes stomach acid as it raises the pH of your stomach. Hence, take it an hour away from eating so that it won’t interfere with the acid in your stomach (or with its ability to digest your food). Ensure you use only small amounts at a time. Large amounts can drastically alter the pH levels and lead to fatal effects.

13. Coconut Oil

Coconut oil contains medium-chain fatty acids (like lauric acid), which impart powerful antioxidant properties. These fatty acids can help improve antioxidant status and prevent lipid oxidation (30), (31). Some believe these properties could also help cleanse colon, though concrete research is lacking here.

  • 2 tablespoons of organic coconut oil
  • Lemon juice (optional)
  • Yogurt (optional)
  1. Consume organic coconut oil multiple times until you have had 14 tablespoons of it in a day.
  2. Do not consume any solid food during this period (especially that which lasts from 3 to 7 days).
  3. Before following the coconut oil detox diet, you can try taking a teaspoon of coconut oil, thrice daily, along with your normal diet and see if the taste suits you.
  4. If the taste of coconut oil is “too oily”, you can add some lemon juice or yogurt.
  5. If you are planning to go for a coconut oil detox, it is important that you are well-versed with its potential side effects before going ahead with the procedure.

Consume coconut oil multiple times daily for 3 to 7 days.

Note: Pregnant women should stay away from the coconut oil detox diet. Individuals with chronic diseases should consult with their health care practitioner before going for coconut oil.

14. Castor Oil

Castor oil is a powerful laxative that can quicken and increase your bowel movements. The ricinoleic acid present in castor oil has potential laxative effects (32, 33). It could help in cleansing your colon by expelling the unwanted toxins from your body.

  • 1-2 tablespoons of castor oil
  • 1-2 tablespoons of orange or lemon juice (unsweetened)
  1. Mix castor oil and the orange or lemon juice in equal amounts.
  2. Drink this on an empty stomach, early in the morning.
  3. After every 15-30 minutes, drink a glass of hot water until you have emptied your bowels at least 2 to 3 times.
  4. Consume yogurt or other fermented dairy products. This will stop your bowel movements.

You must only do this once in 1 or 2 months.

Note: Pregnant women must avoid consuming castor oil as it may cause miscarriage. Though research is lacking, we suggest you speak to your doctor about this before taking castor oil.

15. Green Tea

Green tea is a home remedy that can cleanse and heal your body naturally. It contains catechins, a group of polyphenols that exhibit antioxidant properties and help reduce colon inflammation (34). Some believe it may also help induce bowel movements, although we need more research here.

  • 1 teaspoon of green tea
  • 1 cup of hot water
  • Honey (optional)
  1. Steep a teaspoon of green tea in a cup of hot water for at least 10 minutes.
  2. Allow it to cool a little and add some honey.

16. Cayenne Pepper

The capsaicin in cayenne pepper helps in decreasing your appetite (35). Some believe this may ease bowel movements and help with colon cleanse. Capsaicin also has a digestive stimulant action (36). Cayenne pepper also has antioxidant properties, and it could detoxify your system and improve your metabolism.

  • 1/4 teaspoon of cayenne pepper
  • 2 tablespoons of lemon juice
  • 2 tablespoons of honey
  • 1 glass of warm water
  1. Add cayenne pepper powder, honey, and lemon juice to a glass of warm water.
  2. Mix well and consume it.
  3. Avoid consuming solid foods during this period.

Do this 6 to 12 times daily for 10 days.

The One Day Cleanse:
How to Rapidly Purify, Detox and Rejuvenate Your Body and Mind

Cleansing isn’t about starving your body for an extended period of time to drop five pounds before the weekend. (Which is what I used to think it was for, and it worked, but it wasn’t very healthy.) It’s about

giving your digestive system a break while attempting to clean your colon out, for the purpose of increased nutrient absorption. There are many reasons why people feel the need to cleanse.

The Question of Why

1. You’re chronically exhausted. This kind of goes hand-in-hand with the second reason on this list. If you’re tired all the time, chances are high that your digestive system is being sluggish or you’re not absorbing the necessary nutrients you need for sustainable energy. If the gut is slow, you’ll be slow, too. A one or two day cleanse can help this problem.

2. You’re beyond constipated. So many people fall into this category. If you’re not moving your bowels at least once a day, then you’re harboring waste that needs an exit strategy, pronto. A one day cleanse can help loosen debris and clear your gastrointestinal (GI) tract.

3. You’re always getting sick. Since most of our immune system is in our gut, an inefficient digestive system equals compromised immunity. By cleaning out your intestinal tract, you will give your immune system a much-needed boost.

4. You’re exhibiting a variety of ailments that aren’t being controlled by other means. Seemingly unrelated health issues, such as skin breakouts, depression, insomnia, and inflammation can all be traced back to GI health. A one day cleanse can help clear your system, and resolve many of these ailments without the need for medication.

5. You had too much fun in Mexico. Or Vegas. Or during the holidays. Or just in general. (Been there, done that—all of it.) A week or month or any extended period of over-indulgence can contribute to the need for cleaning out your digestive system, and giving it a wake-up call.

How Does the One Day Cleanse Work?

You may think that abstaining from solid foods for a day might be enough, but it’s not. Cleaning house from the inside out involves removal of anything that contributes to a clogged tummy, and the malabsorption of necessary nutrients. If you just remove everything, you’re not helping your body. You might be giving it a break, but your goal should be to remove the crap (literally) while simultaneously injecting the necessary micro-nutrients that are responsible for restoration. Keeping this in mind, here’s what you should be mindful about consuming while you do your one day cleanse:

2. Vitamins. A huge injection of various vitamins and antioxidants will be better absorbed through liquid than through solid foods. If you’re going to be consuming a lot of liquid, why not make it the most nutritious liquid you can? This is where fresh-pressed fruit and vegetable juices come in. That is, juice you press yourself and drink immediately. Again, you’ll need a juicer for this, folks. Bonus shots of wheatgrass are also great to incorporate.

3. Electrolytes. So… salt. But not table salt. You shouldn’t even have this highly processed version in your home. Drinking filtered water with a pinch of sea salt will do the job, or better yet, drink organic miso broth. It’s better because it’s super high in electrolytes, and also digestive enzymes. You can also get electrolytes from pure, unsweetened coconut water.

4. Sugar. Again, I’m not suggesting you throw back tablespoons of sugar. The sugar you need will come from fresh-pressed juice you’ll drink on the one day cleanse, and you need it for the carbohydrates (energy) that it provides you with.

5. Variety. Don’t just drink water and juice carrots. You need a large variation of fruits and vegetables on the day of your cleanse.

Tips For a Successful One Day Cleanse

1. Choose a day when you will be home, especially if you’ve never done this before. Your body may react in an unexpected way—it’s kind of like Christmas for your bowel. (So exciting! Anything could happen! Lots of surprises!)

2. Plan ahead. Buy your groceries the day before, and make sure your juicer is clean and ready to go.

About a week before your one day cleanse (even if you’re only doing one day), begin weaning your body off alcohol, caffeine, processed foods, meat, dairy, sugar, and wheat. Your body will have an easier time adjusting to liquids for twenty-four hours if you prepare it for purity.

3. You will have better success if you drink a lot of water and tea throughout the day while you’re cleansing. It will help keep your stomach full, and your skin detoxing.

4. Buy organic produce. The idea is to have as much nutrient absorption as possible by consuming only liquids, so why buy produce that is covered in pesticides? Try and stick to organic stuff only.

5. Have planned activities at home to keep you busy (like a giant puzzle or a fabulous book), but don’t do anything strenuous that will make you extra hungry (like working out). Walking is good; just don’t stray too far from home.

6. Don’t make food for other family members if you can avoid it. The temptation to chow down has proven too great for me many, many times.

7. Don’t worry about protein. This is a low-protein day, but that’s okay. You can fill up on protein-rich foods after your one day cleanse.

8. If you feel shaky and cold on the day of your cleanse (which is totally normal, especially if you’re doing this during the winter), try taking a bath with Epsom salts. The salt will help your body to detox further and the warm water will feel really good and calm your confused nerves. Remember, your body becomes addicted to things like caffeine and sugar just like it would any other drug. You’re going to go through withdrawal, and it might be tough. But you can do it!

The One Day Cleanse Plan

7:00am: Eight ounces of warm water with half a lemon squeezed into it.

8:00am: Juice (in the following order): one chunk ginger, four carrots, and one peeled grapefruit.

10:00am: Juice (in the following order): two green apples, four fennel fronds, six romaine lettuce leaves, handful of parsley, and one large cucumber.

12:00pm: Eight ounces of organic miso broth.

2:00pm: Juice (in the following order): one chunk ginger, one small beet, two large carrots, two red apples, handful of basil, and one large cucumber.

4:00pm: Eight ounces of unsweetened coconut water.

6:00pm: Blend (in the following order): one cup water, one banana, four kale leaves, one cup spinach, one cup frozen pineapple, and a half cup of rolled oats.

In addition to everything above, try to drink extra water or herbal tea throughout the day during your cleanse if you get hungry or thirsty. The last “meal” is more solid, because it will help you to sleep better on a fuller stomach, and create a bit of bulk for a good bowel movement in the morning.

+ One lemon
+ Six carrots

+ One banana

+ Fennel (with at least four fronds)

Note: Repeat this for up to two days if you want, but I don’t recommend detoxing for longer than that, unless you have prior experience with cleanses.

CASE 1 A 31-year-old African American woman sought treatment at her local emergency department (ED) for nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. She reported passing more than 6 yellowish-brown, watery, nonbloody stools during the previous 2 days. She felt weak, feverish, and light-headed and showed signs of dehydration.

The patient had Crohn’s disease and had undergone a partial colectomy 5 years earlier. She told the ED physician that 2 days before visiting the ED she had gone to a “cleansing center” for a colonic cleansing, but was unable to complete the process because she developed cramps 15 minutes into the procedure. Less than an hour later, she developed diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting.

In the ED, her serum potassium was 2.9 mEq/L, blood urea nitrogen was 26 mg/dL, and creatinine was 1.9 mg/dL. She was afebrile, with a blood pressure of 135/75 mm Hg and a heart rate of 113 beats per minute. After receiving 2 liters of normal saline and 90 mEq of potassium chloride replacement, the patient felt better and was later discharged from the ED.

Three days later, the patient came to our residency clinic. She described her stools as being loose, but not watery or bloody, and passed in small amounts, about 4 times daily. She still had some abdominal cramping just before passing stool, but bowel movements relieved that. Her vital signs were within normal limits, and her physical exam was benign. The patient was instructed to follow her normal diet, as tolerated, and drink plenty of fluids to maintain good hydration. Her symptoms resolved by the following week.

CASE 2 A 49-year-old African American man came to our community hospital because of vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain he had been experiencing for 4 days. He linked the symptoms to eating a large fast-food breakfast, followed by a big lunch the day before. He described having multiple episodes of nonbloody, nonbilious vomiting, nonbloody watery diarrhea, and “twisting” abdominal pain that was constant but temporarily relieved with a warm compress or positional maneuvers. He had never had a similar episode and had not taken any antibiotics recently.

Upon further questioning, the patient revealed that he had used a colon cleanser a few days earlier. A review showed that he had lost 24 pounds in 10 days. Vitals were within normal limits. Serum potassium was 2.9 mEq/L, and creatinine was 2.1 mg/dL. A computed tomography scan of the abdomen revealed moderate to moderately severe dilatation of multiple small bowel loops with multiple air fluid levels, suggesting an early or partial small bowel obstruction. We obtained a surgical consultation, but surgery was not required. He was discharged after 2 days.

The patient returned to the hospital 3 days later with similar symptoms and severe weakness associated with dizziness. At that time his serum potassium was 2.4 mEq/L and creatinine was 4.0 mg/dL. Aspartate aminotransferase was 29 U/L, alanine aminotransferase was 80 U/L, lipase was 418 U/L, and amylase was 94 U/L.

The patient was readmitted for dehydration, hypokalemia, and pancreatitis and, following a colonoscopy and biopsy that revealed chronic and acute inflammation, a gastroenterologist made a diagnosis of “herbal intoxication.” The patient was hydrated, his electrolytes were replaced, and his diet was slowly returned to normal. He was discharged after 5 days.

An old practice rediscovered

Colon cleansing has been around since ancient times, when its purported benefits were based on the belief that intestinal waste can poison the body (“autointoxication”).1 The procedure became popular in the early 1900s, but in a 1919 paper, the American Medical Association discounted the autointoxication theory and condemned the practice.1 The procedure then fell out of favor, albeit temporarily.2 Colon cleansing has staged a comeback in recent years.

Colon cleansing basics
Colon cleansing, also called colonic irrigation or colonic hydrotherapy, is performed by colonic hygienists or colon therapists, or can be self-administered. The procedure works like an enema. The patient generally lies on a table and water (with or without additional herbs or compounds) is pumped through the rectum via a tube.

Unlike enemas, for which a small amount of fluid is used, however, colon cleansing calls for a large volume of fluid—up to 60 liters—to be introduced into the rectum.3,4 Fluids and waste are expelled through another tube. The procedure may be repeated several times.

Colon cleansing is one of the easiest, yet most ignored home remedy procedures in today’s societies.
