Do Those Hair, Skin, and Nails Supplements Really Work?
We all know that a protein-packed salad is a better lunch option than a basket of fries—our bodies need the nutrients found in fresh, whole ingredients for cell regeneration and general health, after all. But, for real, it’s pretty often we promise ourselves a smoothie tomorrow in exchange for the drive-thru today—so much so that many Americans are vitamin-deficient without even realizing it.
Those deficiencies can make themselves known in sneaky ways: brittle nails, dull skin, thinner hair… and the booming dietary supplement industry promises magic pills that can refill our depleted vitamin tanks. But what are those “hair, skin, and nails supplements” composed of, anyway? And do they really make a difference?
What’s in those supplements?
These supplements are supposed to do just that: supplement the vitamins, minerals, and fatty acids we get from our diets to keep hair, skin, and nails healthy. Most supplements meant to stimulate hair and nail growth or brighten and clear skin contain some combination of biotin, fish oil, and Vitamins A, C, and E.
How do they work?
According to Michele Green, M.D., of RealSelf, the ingredients in supplements all work in conjunction with one another to provide the nutrients essential for healthy cell regeneration.
“Biotin strengthens the hair and increases its density,” Green says. “Fish oil makes hair and nails shiny and is a great anti-aging supplement, as the omega oils found in fish oil stimulate collagen production and overall appearance of the skin.”
According to Green, Vitamin A, much like its synthetic counterpart, isotretinoin, or Retin-A, can help to treat acne and reduce fine lines. “Vitamin A, taken orally, reduces sebum production, which is great if you suffer from acne. The reduction of sebum reduces acne flares, and it is also anti-aging due to its ability to stimulate cell turnover,” Green says.
“Vitamin C is an antioxidant, which helps us fight free radicals, brightens the skin, and stimulates collagen production,” Green says. “And vitamin E is an anti-inflammatory and also helps with cell turnover.”
Supplements are great—for some people.
But if supplements were such a cure-all, wouldn’t everyone be taking them? In reality, supplements have been proven to work, but only for people with health concerns that interfere with their ability to absorb nutrients.
Supplemental biotin was recently found to be effective for hair and nail regrowth in a study of 18 different cases, but all of the patients using biotin had an “underlying pathology” for damaged hair and nails. The study concluded that biotin might not be effective for people without medical conditions causing hair and nail breakage.
Another use for biotin could be clearing discolored toenails. If your toenails are yellowish for no good reason, like fungus, supplements might be the answer, according to New York podiatrist, Bruce Pinker, DPM, PC.
“When toenail biopsy results are negative for fungus, yeast, or mold (the three elements we look for in toenails that are discolored), we recommend biotin supplementation to improve the appearance of the toenails,” Pinker says. “I normally recommend 2,500 micrograms a day of biotin for about three months to improve the appearance of toenails. It’s effective and can also be taken as 5,000 micrograms a day since it’s more commonly found in this dosage.”
Recent studies have also found fish oil to be effective in treating keloid scars, while topical Vitamin A has been used for years to treat acne. And there’s some evidence to support the idea that even non-prescription topical solutions can reduce hyperpigmentation and fine lines.
But when it comes to oral supplements for healthy people who are just looking for longer nails or thicker hair, the overwhelming medical opinion seems to be a resounding, “Who knows?”
Make sure you’re getting what you pay for.
Since there’s no evidence that supplements are actively bad for hair, skin, and nails, not to mention the evidence that they’ve helped at least a few people, supplements are probably worth a shot if you’re interested in them. One word of caution: Since supplements aren’t heavily regulated by the FDA, it’s entirely possible to purchase snake oil instead of fish oil, so it’s important to be discerning when shopping for supplements.
“Shopping for vitamins can be tricky,” Green says. “You want to be sure the label says they’re 100 percent natural and list all-natural ingredients with no synthetic fillers.”
And for those who hate the idea of taking a bunch of pills every morning, Green says gummy options are a fine alternative—as long as you’re taking them before you brush. “The nutritional value of gummy vitamins includes Vitamin D, C, E, and A, along with B vitamins and iodine.
Gummy vitamins do contain gelatin and glucose syrup, but as long as you take the recommended dose, those things shouldn’t be harmful to your body. Simply make sure to brush your teeth shortly after taking them, so the sugar doesn’t sit on your teeth for long periods of time.”
And if you decide to start a supplement routine, stick with it—most people don’t see results for three to four months.

I Tried Beauty Supplements for My Nails — And My Nails Are Stronger than Ever
We’ve all had a funhouse mirror moment: Standing over our bathroom sink and noticing the way our pores have grown monumentally larger than what we’re comfortable with. Maybe we haven’t been getting enough sleep and there are now bags the size of Oreos under our eyes. It’s like going to the carnival, minus the fun.
As a full-time freelancer and mother to an active toddler, my beauty routine has taken a backseat, to say the least — I’ve had more funhouse mirror moments than I’d like to admit. And my eating and sleeping habits haven’t exactly been “optimal.”
So when I read about all the benefits promised — by beauty gurus and online reviews alike — from taking beauty supplements, I was both curious and wholeheartedly committed to investing in my well-being.
Can beauty come from a pill?
Aside from the more obvious aesthetic appeal, having stronger nails was a huge incentive. In the last few months alone, my nails have cracked so badly I’ve had to wear bandages on multiple fingers (not great for typing or washing dishes, let me tell you).
The whole thing seemed pretty straightforward — take your beauty vitamins each day and voilà!
But not so fast. According to the New York Times, more than half of Americans take vitamins, all of which aren’t regulated by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). “Often, preliminary studies fuel irrational exuberance about a promising dietary supplement, leading millions of people to buy in to the trend.”
One of the issues with these studies is that they often contain a small number of participants, but the results get filtered by advertising as solutions “for everyone.”
Some experts have voiced concerns about the safety of some of the ingredients found in these beauty supplements. In a recentBustle article, Tati Westbrook’s Halo Beauty came into question as her supplement contained saw palmetto, which can decrease the efficacy of oral contraceptives and be a hormone-disruptor. Many of her followers addressed the lack of labeling and scientific backing to her claims on her social media.
While many people are seeking out these vitamins as a cure-all for unachievable beauty, trying to parse out what’s harmful and what isn’t can often feel like a fool’s errand.
The amount of misinformation is well — significant — which begs the question, is it all a scam? Or can these magical pills confer some benefit to the nutritionally challenged among us?
After searching through different options (of which there are many), I opted for taking GNC Women’s Hair, Skin, and Nails Program, which claims to “support beauty from within.”
Aside from what you might find in your average multivitamin, some of the core ingredients include biotin, primrose oil, and collagen, which places them squarely in the category of “supplement.”
What exactly are supplements?Confusing but true items listed as vitamins should only contain just that, vitamins,” says Brooklyn-based Maya Feller, a registered dietitian. “If there are other ingredients on the label, then it’s a dietary supplement.
Do excess vitamins help or hurt me in the long run?
Always the cautious enthusiast, I didn’t expect much to come out of ingesting the pills. Yet surprisingly, within two weeks of faithfully taking the capsules each day, I realized my nails had drastically changed. No more painful cracks, no more wet bandages. My hair was also significantly more lustrous, so that even my husband took notice.
Only my skin… wasn’t faring as well.
Far from the glowing complexion I had hoped for, my face started breaking out in suspicious (and unappealing) patches. Quite the opposite from what the package claimed.
“Beauty supplements seem to imply that a pill a day will do away with a multitude of skin problems,” says Claire Martin, a registered dietitian based in California. “While nutrition plays a key role in many skin issues, consuming pills specifically to target these without making any other changes to your diet or lifestyle is likely counterintuitive.”
There’s no easy answer whether vitamins help or hurt us in the long run, as each person is an individual, says Feller, who specializes in nutrition for chronic disease prevention. Still, some experts hold that it’s reasonable to take a daily multivitamin “for insurance,” as it can take anywhere from five years to decades to see supplements’ true benefits.

Was it the collagen, primrose oil, biotin, or some other mysterious ingredient? So many questions!
San Francisco-based beauty vlogger, Trina Espinoza, says she finds many people think of supplements as purely beneficial. “They think ‘it can’t do any harm’ when they add supplements to their routine, and yet, excess amounts of preformed vitamin A can cause birth defects, high amounts of biotin can skew some medical tests, and too much B-6 is known to cause nerve damage.”
She adds that multivitamins or beauty supplements have these in quantities far beyond our daily requirements.
Our best bet is to be careful of herbs and botanicals when taking dietary supplements, says Feller, as there may be interactions with medications we’re already taking. “For example St. John’s Wort may decrease the activity of some birth control pills. Also look out for added sugars, artificial flavors, colors, and dyes.”
“I noticed one anti-acne supplement had red clover as an ingredient,” says Martin. “Red clover is a naturopathic ingredient that can help balance your hormones during menstruation or menopause, but can also cause miscarriages. There was no indication of this side effect on the supplement’s packaging.”
Are there proven, absolute vitamins I should look for?
One size does not fit all, just as there’s no one perfect diet, says Feller. “If I have a patient who eats a majority of ultra-processed foods and I know that they are likely malnourished, I would first recommend a reduction in the harmful food with a transition to minimally-processed, nutrient-dense foods.”
Vitamins from food is the recommended route, although vegans or strict vegetarians should take vitamin B-12, which is found mostly in meats.
Martin recommends seriously considering why we’re taking supplements to begin with: “Is your diet lacking? Are you taking them for the sake of taking one?”
“If you’re eating a well-balanced diet daily, you don’t need a vitamin,” she adds, “unless you have extensive blood tests or deficiency symptoms (for which you’ll need blood tests to diagnose) and know for certain that you are missing a vitamin or mineral.”
Espinoza offers this simple advice: “Don’t take the marketing claims for granted. Do your research. It’s okay to ask manufacturers for more information,” she says. “Ultimately, it’s our responsibility to decide if a product lives up to its claims. And at these prices, it pays to do your research!”
Personally, while I may never find out the cause of my outbreak, I wouldn’t give up entirely on taking supplements. They do in part live up to their hype — my nails are stronger than ever.
If anything, they’ve made me realize an important fact: We can’t put a bandage on our well-being. In the long-term, nothing should replace the endless benefits of eating healthier and getting a good night’s rest. After all, natural beauty comes from within.

Your hair, skin and nails, just like the rest of your body, all benefit from proper nutrition. The best way to ‘get’ good nutrition is through eating a well-balanced diet. However, while we may have the best of intentions, our food choices are often less than ideal.
Special vitamin blends targeted at hair, skin and nail health have been formulated and are easily available. Can they fill the gap? To find out, we spoke with GP and NPS MedicineWise medical advisor Dr Jill Thistlethwaite.
A bit about hair growth and loss
Hair growth follows a cycle. In a healthy scalp, about 85 per cent of the hair follicles are actively growing (about 1 cm per month) and 15 per cent are resting. A new hair will grow up under a resting hair and push it out, so it’s normal to lose around about 100 hairs a day as a result of a normal cycle. Washing hair helps remove loose hair, so you might also notice more hair loss if you wash your hair infrequently. A multitude of things can affect hair growth and loss, including skin diseases, bacterial infections and weight loss–even excessive sun exposure.
While it is true that the quantity and quality of hair are closely related to the nutritional status of our diet, much of what is known about the effect of nutrients on hair loss or growth comes from research on the diseases that result in nutritional deficiencies and not from well-nourished people taking supplements.
So if you are concerned your hair loss is excessive, it’s worth talking to your doctor before you buy a supplement to rule out deficiencies and ensure the correct treatment.

Will taking supplements improve hair, skin and nails?
Particular nutrient deficiencies are known to affect hair. However, while formulations marketed as targeting hair, skin and nails usually contain a combination of vitamins and other compounds, these vary considerably and may not be relevant to your needs. In fact, some of them may even contain dosages well above the recommended daily values for some nutrients, which can lead to complications.
For example, many vitamin blends contain vitamin A. This is because vitamin A has a role in building and strengthening skin and other tissues. However, in the absence of deficiency, supplementation may actually prove harmful to hair. Over-supplementation of certain nutrients, including selenium, vitamin A, and vitamin E, has actually been linked to hair loss.
Biotin, or vitamin B7, helps maintain the health of our hair, skin and nails and is commonly added to supplements. Despite its reputation, there is limited research to support the usefulness of biotin in healthy individuals, although it is effective for the treatment of brittle fingernails in cases of deficiency or illness.
Vitamin D supplements might be useful in people with certain types of dermatitis (skin inflammation), but evidence for vitamin E is less conclusive.
It’s the same for nails. Although virtually every nutritional deficiency can affect the growth of the nail in some manner, not much evidence supports the use of vitamin supplementation for improving nail health in well-nourished people.
So although vitamins play key roles in the formation and maintenance of good hair, skin and nails, supplements will generally only be useful if you’re not getting sufficient nutrients already.
Research on the benefits of supplements is ongoing, but remember–the best source of vitamins for the skin, hair and nails, is a properly balanced diet.
