I ate like Gigi Hadid for a week — and it didn’t exactly feel like a typical model diet
Gigi Hadid is famous for her modeling, social media presence, and laid-back persona. The blonde Los Angeles-native is known for her athletic abilities — Hadid played volleyball and rode horses growing up, now opting for boxing to stay in shape — and her accessible, healthy diet. Hadid told Harper’s Bazaar that her mantra is “Eat clean to stay fit, have a burger to stay sane.” I decided to try out her diet for seven days after returning from a few weeks of traveling to see if the Gigi Detox would give me model looks and several inches in height. Probably not, but why not try?
I took a look around the internet trying to get more specific examples of what Gigi eats. It looked pretty simple: eggs, toast, salad — basically clean eating. She likes to fit a burger in here and there – so while I’m eating like her, I don’t eat meat, so I’ll replace a burger with a Beyond Meat patty one night. (Which tastes and looks the same, basically.)
So let’s give this a try.
Day one was a lot of guesswork.

Day one, I got this. For breakfast I decided to make two eggs and coffee for breakfast, just like Gigi does. I hoped the first meal wasn’t an indication of how the rest of the week would go: the second egg I cracked had blood in it. I threw that out, cracked another, and scrambled them right up. I was not feeling supermodel-esque quite yet but maybe I was on my way.
There wasn’t that much food around after getting home around 1:30 a.m. from my travels, but luckily, found some stuff in the freezer: Morning Star chipotle black bean veggie burger and Trader Joe’s mashed cauliflower. That was … pretty clean, right? It’s just vegetables.
I went to go see “I Feel Pretty” with a friend, so after I got my ticket, I stopped by Sweetgreen to grab my favorite salad there that I think would be Gigi-approved: the Harvest Bowl. It has wild rice, kale, sweet potato, almonds, apples, goat cheese, and balsamic vinaigrette. It also comes with chicken, but I subbed in tofu instead. Gigi apparently loves tea thanks to her British (ex?) boyfriend Zayn Malik, so I also got an iced chai tea to wash it down.
Day two started out with some protein.

I wasn’t in the mood for eggs this morning, and since Gigi eats toast with her breakfast, I figure homegirl is down with carbs. I made a Kodiak Cakes Power Cake pancake, which has 14 grams of protein per serving. I’m not powering to box and do ab work like Gigi does, but a healthy heap of protein isn’t a bad thing. A mug of coffee with a splash of unsweetened almond milk topped off the meal. I was definitely full for a while, and imagine a similar protein-packed breakfast would get me through a Gigi Hadid morning.
Because I went straight to the movies and picked up a sweetgreen salad last night, I didn’t have a chance to stop by the grocery store. I had the same lunch as yesterday. It filled me up fine and wasn’t much to talk about – apparently like the majority of Gigi’s meals. Most of this is guesswork.
I did indeed run to Trader Joe’s after my physical therapy appointment, got some good and healthy food. For dinner, I ate their microwavable salmon and orzo. It was too late to actually cook something, but the lean protein from the fish and carbs seemed like a sufficient way to complete the day.
On day three, I went for Gigi’s favorite lunch.

I woke up and craved the Kodiak pancake again and had the ingredients, so I went for it. This time, I had some fresh fruit to eat on the side, so I cut up some fresh strawberries and ate those. My regular cup of coffee and some almond milk accompanied the meal.
Gigi has said she eats an arugula salad for lunch, so that’s what I made. Mine had arugula, smoked salmon, cherry tomatoes, a little bit of parmesan cheese, olive oil, and peach balsamic vinegar. A few hours after lunch, I had a Babybel light cheese as a snack. I don’t know if Gigi eats dairy on the reg, but I was too hungry to run out to buy carrots and hummus, a snack she does in fact eat.
Once again, lazy. Whoops. Ate the Trader Joe’s cod with ratatouille and rice. It was really good. Try it if you haven’t. For dessert, I had some of the Trader Joe’s Milk Chocolate Lover Bar. I can’t help it – gotta have some chocolate, even when I’m trying to eat like a supermodel.
On Day four, I went for some ice cream, just like Gigi.

I ate the same breakfast again, because it feels decadent but is healthy at the same time. Also, a pancake is the perfect accompaniment to watching Real Housewives of New York City. (Even though Gigi’s mom, Yolanda, was on the Beverly Hills franchise of the show, I still feel it’s appropriate to mention.)
Lunch was yet again an arugula salad.
I went to see a screening of “Eighth Grade” with a friend in Philly, and after the movie, we hit up my favorite fast-casual in the City of Brotherly Love: vegan Middle-Eastern eatery Goldie. They were out of the falafel pita sandwich, so I got the salad instead. I had to get the Turkish coffee tehina milkshake because that drink is the best milkshake I’ve had in my life, and Gigi has talked about her ice cream love anyways. I shared shawarma spice fries with my friend Alana. Gigi has made her love of McDonald’s known, so that definitely justifies my fast-food meal, right?.
Day five consisted of more toast and fast food.

For the first time since I can remember, I slept until 11 a.m. This is practically unheard of for me. Anyway, I made what I guess would be brunch due to the time: a toasted whole wheat bagel thin with a slice of provolone cheese and smoked salmon, and a sliced honeycrisp apple on the side. Went with French vanilla coffee this morning with my Trader Joe’s unsweetened almond milk, of course.
I’m Chipotle trash and needed to get some sofritas ASAP. Had my usual order which I think would be okay? Except for the fact that there’s probably a bunch of added oil and sodium that wouldn’t fly with Gigi? (But remember, she eats McDonald’s, so I don’t feel that guilty.) Anyway. Got a salad with sofritas, brown rice, fajita veggies, tomato salsa, corn salsa, tomatillo-green chili salsa (I like salsa), extra lettuce, and cheese. For dessert I had a few coffee chew things from Trader Joe’s.
On Day six, I ate some of Gigi’s favorite snacks

For breakfast, I had Kodiak pancake, banana, a drizzle of sugar-free syrup, and French press coffee with a bit of almond milk.
Had the Morningstar Farms Chipotle black bean burger and some Trader Joe’s mashed cauliflower again. I also ate apple slices with Trader Joe’s natural peanut butter a couple hours later. I know Gigi stocks up on fruit as a snack, so that seemed on par with the model’s diet.
After physical therapy, I was so hungry. At Trader Joe’s a few days prior, I saw these frozen cooked carrot spirals that seemed similar in idea to zucchini noodles, so I picked them up. I tried the coodles (if “zoodles” can be a thing, so can “coodles”) with plain marinara sauce, Trader Joe’s beefless ground beef, and a little bit of freshly shaved parmesan. Ate a few of the coffee chews for dessert.
Day seven had me eating Gigi’s favorite: a “burger.”

Today was more of the same: the same breakfast with no French press coffee. For lunch, I had leftovers of exactly what I had for dinner last night.
Gigi has talked about her love of cheeseburgers, so I decided to make a Beyond Meat burger in her honor. The patty is almost identical to a meat one, and tastes just like it, too (I stopped eating meat in April 2017). I sandwiched the patty between a whole wheat sandwich thin and placed a slice of cheddar cheese on top.
On Day eight, I tried to eat as many of her favorites as possible.
I stopped at Starbucks on my way into the office for a late start (I usually work at home and start earlier!), and had a banana, yogurt parfait with granola, and a tall iced coffee with a bit of soy milk (almond milk is extra, so no thank you). I wondered what Gigi would order at Starbucks, and tried to do something similar. In all reality, she probably would just get fruit. A few hours later, I had carrots and hummus for a snack. Still didn’t feel like a model.
I hit up the restaurant Bite in the Flatiron district for a vegan Mediterranean salad with lettuce, tomatoes, cucumber, roasted eggplant, hummus, pine nuts, and a side of pita. Drank a Diet Coke. Or Two. A girl’s gotta caffeinate.
My friend Sarah made me dinner tonight: cooked salmon with lemon, boiled potatoes, and cucumber and tomato salad. Fish and vegetables seemed like a healthy enough way to round up a week of eating/attempting to eat like Gigi.
Eating like Gigi was flexible and not too different from what I normally eat.
The diet wasn’t too difficult — but I got sick of arugula.
Eating like Gigi doesn’t feel too different from how I normally eat, but I couldn’t quite track down her normal, go-to dinner so that was more of a guess on my end. I probably ate more chocolate and dairy than she would, but can’t stop those cravings and you gotta live, you know? Her regular breakfast of toast and eggs was doable enough, but I don’t like to eat the same thing for a week straight, so I had to adjust that a little bit to get some variety.
As for lunch, I would hate having an arugula salad every single day. I love salad – don’t get me wrong, but sometimes you gotta through in some more carbs than that.
I imagine what she eats for dinner is probably a lean cut of chicken or fish with steamed vegetables. Her mentioning eating sushi and cheeseburgers is more likely the exception to her standard than the regular, which was fine for me because I don’t eat sushi or cheeseburgers every night anyway
While I definitely enjoyed trying to resemble Gigi Hadid – I’m not blonde nor skinny nor incredibly famous – I’ll leave the clean eating to the model, and happily take my cheese and chocolate instead.

What is Gigi Hadid’s most spellbinding feature? Though some may say it’s her tousled blonde waves or baby face, the American supermodel and Vogue’s August cover star may own the best abs in the business—which are perennially on display in crop tops and low-slung denim. But, it turns out, the secret to that supernaturally toned core is rather quotidian—something that anyone can achieve.
“It’s all about how hard you work and how much you put in—Gigi is a hard worker,” says Rob Piela, owner of New York’s Gotham Gym and Gotham G-Box, who began training Hadid two and a half years ago. A typical session will see the model switch back and forth between cardio-friendly boxing and strenuous floor work to keep her core engaged through a total-body workout, a routine that she returns to week after week without fail. “Staying fit is all about consistency,” he says. “Don’t miss workout days; don’t get lazy in the winter.”
For those seeking a Hadid-ian core, Piela suggests careful ab work four days a week—planks to work the deeper muscles, crunches for that visible six-pack, and leg raises to target the lower abdominals. “The combination of those three moves is golden,” he says, adding that eating well and avoiding sugar are equally key. Below, Piela breaks down a Hadid-approved core workout—for Insta-famous abs, in no time.
Gigi Hadid’s Core-Focused Workout
1. Warm up the core with 10 minutes of boxing.
2. Perform three sets of 40 crunches each.
3. Raise your heart rate with 10 minutes of boxing.
4. Perform three sets of 40 bicycle crunches each, kicking each leg out once per bicycle.
5. Box for another 10 minutes.
6. Take a plank pose to hit the transverse abdominals, holding for about 60 seconds, or as long as you can maintain good form (abs tight, no sway in the back, and the neck in a neutral position).
7. Super-set straight into leg raises to hit the lower abdominals, performing four sets of 25 leg raises each.
Gigi Hadid has walked her fair share of runways wearing next-to-nothing. But the 22-year-old model recently told SELF that she feels most sexy (and comfortable!) in a pair of high-waisted leggings. Regardless of whether she’s rocking Victoria’s Secret lingerie or tights with a crop top, the Reebok spokeswoman knows it’s important to stay active and more importantly, stay strong.
“For me, I celebrate strength, not only the physical but mental and social,” Hadid said at a recent holiday event put on by Reebok in New York City. “You have to nourish all parts of yourself.” Her advice: Try writing down little ways you can build all types of strength each week. “Make sure you give attention to everything. It’s not just .”
Touche, Gigi. Turns out her trainer and owner of Gotham Gym, Rob Piela, is on the same page. When Hadid’s home in New York City, she spends a lot of time training with Piela. But when she’s not? Piela’s still there to motivate and support her.
“We get together as often as possible, and when she’s here—we turn it up a notch,” says Piela. “But she’s a great friend of mine. We FaceTime when she’s on the road. The motivation and support, no matter where she may be, is critical.”
We asked Piela about a typical workout that Hadid will do when they’re sweating together. Here, he shares a lower-body workout with SELF that will build strength and get your heart rate up. The best part? It’s easily customizable.
“Gigi loves boxing, so we use it in a lot of her workouts,” he tells SELF. “This workout involves 3 minutes of boxing, and then 1 minute of doing a lot of different leg-focused strength-training moves. If boxing isn’t your thing, you can swap it out for another cardio activity. I’ve always liked jump rope—it’s great for legs—or running if . You just want to keep your heart rate up the entire time.”
Here’s how the workout is set up:
You’ll alternate 3 minutes of boxing (or another form of cardio) with 1 minute of strength training. For each strength-training interval, you’ll pick two exercises from the list below, and do one set of each, ideally within the minute—if it takes a little longer, that’s OK. For the next strength interval, pick two different exercises.
Continue alternating between 3 minutes of boxing/cardio and 1 minute of strength exercises until you’ve done six rounds of each.
One of the exercises (banded squat walks) requires a looped resistance band—but for the rest, all you need is your bodyweight.

Gigi Hadid might just be the current “it” model. The 23-year-old runway pro walked in 13 shows during New York, Milan, and Paris fashion weeks in September 2018, according to E! Online. Not to mention, she’s a veteran angel for the Victoria’s Secret fashion show, along with her sister and fellow model Bella Hadid.
To become what she is today — one of the most sought-after models in the industry — took some family pedigree (her mom, Yolanda Hadid, is a former model who also starred in The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills and Lifetime’s Making a Model With Yolanda Hadid) as well as a lot of hard work. British Vogue called Gigi part of “the new age of models” because of her “strong work ethic, good manners, and the ability to speak out.”
“My mum always told me if you’re not the nicest, most hardworking girl in the room, there’s always going to be someone prettier than you who’s nicer and more hardworking. I intentionally go to work every day and try to be someone people like to work with,” Hadid told British Vogue.

In addition to all the effort she pours into her career, she’s had to put in a lot work managing Hashimoto’s disease, which she announced she had been diagnosed with in 2016. Hashimoto’s is an autoimmune disorder in which your immune system starts attacking your thyroid, according to the National Institutes of Health. That, in turn, means your thyroid can’t make the proper amount of hormones, which may lead to symptoms like tiredness, joint and muscle pain, and weight gain. (Hashimoto’s is a cause of hypothyroidism.)
In February, Hadid tweeted what it finally took to get disease under control: “I’ve been properly medicated to help symptoms including those, as well as extreme fatigue, metabolism issues, body’s ability to retain heat, etc … I was also part of a holistic medical trial that helped my thyroid levels balance out.”
Now, Hadid is feeling better than ever (though she has had to shut down some people on Twitter who say she is looking too slim these days). Find out Hadid’s diet and the workout that help her stay fit and healthy, plus what the pros think about her plan.
1. Hadid Loves a Good Egg Breakfast
Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, right? And Hadid nails it with her a.m. pick. “At home I love scrambled eggs and toast; it’s just an easy go-to,” Hadid told Harper’s Bazaar.
In the past, eggs were vilified because they contain cholesterol, says Alix Turoff, RDN, a New York City–based dietitian in private practice and a National Academy of Sports Medicine–certified personal trainer. Many health professionals thought that eggs would raise a person’s cholesterol levels, but that’s not the case for the majority of people, says Turoff. Instead, they’re a great source of protein (which likely gives Hadid energy for long photo shoots), plus they contain essential vitamins and nutrients, like B vitamins, folate, and choline.
Also, whole-grain toast is a great complement for added fiber. “If you serve your eggs with fiber-filled whole-grain or whole-wheat toast, that’s almost a perfect breakfast,” says Christine Palumbo, RDN, a Chicago-based dietitian in private practice.
One of Palumbo’s suggestions for Hadid is adding some veggies to the scramble — like onions, green peppers, spinach, or kale — for an extra vitamin and fiber hit.
When Hadid goes out for breakfast, she ups the ante. “I live near The Smile, and I love their scrambled eggs, bacon, and toast,” she also told Harper’s Bazaar. Turoff says that the model is likely getting uncured, grass-fed pork at the upscale spot, so the bacon is probably not as bad an option as it might initially seem (there’s a potential concern about processed meat like bacon causing cancer, per the World Health Organization). Still, Palumbo advises that you consider bacon a “once in a while” order rather than an everyday item.

2. And She’s a Fan of OJ and Coffee With Her A.M. Meal
To wash down her eggs and toast, Hadid told Harper’s Bazaar, “I drink orange juice and coffee always.”
Dietitians like Palumbo stand by coffee as a wise beverage in moderation — not only does it taste great but it’s a good way to get antioxidants, she adds. Her advice: “Just go easy with cream and sugar.”
On the other hand, nutritionists like Turoff aren’t thrilled with the orange juice choice. “Orange juice is going to be high in sugar, so I wouldn’t recommend it for the average person — instead, I suggest having a whole orange,” says Turoff. By doing so, she says, you get the fiber from the whole fruit, which helps keep your blood sugar from spiking, like it does with juice.
Still, Palumbo realizes that not everyone is going to make the time to peel an orange in the morning. “So if you do grab a glass of juice, it’s a good way to get in vitamins like C, but the key is portion size,” says Palumbo. (A half-cup, 4 ounces, of OJ is a serving size, according to the American Heart Association.)
3. Speaking of Juice, Hadid Also Likes Her Juice Press
It’s a whole lot easier to be healthy when you have nutritious spots within walking distance. And Hadid is in luck where she lives. “New York is great for being healthy — I have a Juice Press right around the corner,” she told Into the Gloss, referring to the popular juice bar.
She was also spotted holding trays of Juice Press green juices for a photo shoot; it’s pretty clear she’s a regular. Whether downing lots of green juice is a good idea, however, is up for debate.
On the one hand, you are getting your vegetables in, says Leah Kaufman, RDN, a New York City–based dietitian in private practice.
At the same time, Turoff tells her clients to proceed with caution when you have a green juice because it is not as satisfying as eating your vegetables due to the lack of fiber. “A big salad will be a lot more filling,” she says. If you do have a green juice, check the ingredient list to make sure it’s not loaded with fruit, which can send the drink’s sugar count soaring, she notes.

4. Her Motto Is ‘Eat Clean to Stay Fit, Have a Burger to Stay Sane’
It’s clear that Hadid focuses on getting in her veggies and makes smart protein choices with her eggs, but she’s also not afraid to enjoy the food she loves.
In fact, the model told Harper’s Bazaar that her motto is “Eat clean to stay fit, have a burger to stay sane.”
And it’s easy to see why that’s her favorite saying: She told Into the Gloss, “Burgers and fries are my weakness,” and Hadid even won an episode of MasterChef by making a jalapeno-infused burger. “The first year I lived in New York I tried a different burger every week to find my favorite burger in New York,” she told the judges Gordon Ramsey and Christina Tosi on the show.
As for the mantra? Turoff thinks they are good words to live by, saying, “I kind of like it — it’s a pretty good description of balance, and people should include fun foods in their diet.” Also, Turoff adds, it’s a much better line than what model Kate Moss once said: “Nothing tastes as good as skinny feels.” (Though Elle has since reported that the veteran model now regrets saying that.)
Palumbo is a fan of the motto, too. “She’s essentially saying to eat really well 90 percent of the time and allow yourself 10 percent indulgences, which is smart,” she says.
5. She Likes to Box — Rather Than Using Machines at the Gym
Hadid’s workout of choice? It’s boxing, per Vogue. “When I walk in , it’s like my big brothers. They don’t care about me as a model or what my body looks like. They care that I give a good punch, and that’s how I want to be judged in my athletic space, because that’s what I find pride in,” Hadid said on a Reebok panel.
Her boxing trainer, Rob Piela, said that Hadid likes to stick to a regular workout schedule. “We get together as often as possible,” he told Self.
Hadid also told Harper’s Bazaar that because she has played volleyball and ridden horses all her life, just going to the gym doesn’t cut it for her. “I need to have a sport that wakes me up and that I can get better at, and boxing does that for me,” Hadid said.
“Boxing is great for the core and arms, and is a full-body workout,” says Turoff. “And a full-body workout is important for her as a model.”
That said, it doesn’t mean you have to run out and buy a pair of gloves — it’s about finding a workout that makes sense for you, says Turoff. “As long as you enjoy the exercise and can do it regularly, you’ll get benefits,” adds Turoff. “Any form of movement is good, from walking to Zumba.”

6. She Has a Go-To Salad She Could Eat Every Day
At one of Hadid’s haunts, The Smile, her favorite meal is “a little arugula salad that I could eat every day,” the model told Harper’s.
So is a once-a-day salad a good habit? “In general, it’s a smart idea, but it depends on what’s in your salad,” says Turoff. “For a well-balanced meal, salads should have a protein source, like chicken or tofu, nonstarchy veggies,” and a dressing for fat, she says. People run into trouble, she adds, when their salads have nuts, dressing, cheese, and avocado, for a total of four servings of fat or more.
Also, Kaufman says that variation is key when it comes to getting in your veggies (you don’t want to get bored). “If you get sick of having veggies in salad form, mix it up and try grilled vegetables,” she adds.
7. She Likes Ordering Sushi With Friends
Every group of friends has their favorite dinner spot, and it’s no different for Hadid. “If I’m going out, I like to go for dinner and drinks with friends. I love Bond Street for sushi,” she told Harper’s Bazaar.
From a health standpoint, sushi can be variable, says Turoff. Rather than tempura (fried veggies or seafood), “start with a green salad with ginger dressing and edamame,” advises Turoff.
For your main, it’s a good idea to get one roll with rice or sashimi, and then if you want another, get it “naruto style,” which means it’s wrapped in a thin slice of cucumber rather than rice, says Turoff. “Some places will even make your rolls with less rice if you ask,” Turoff adds. Another pro tip? “I also recommend people stay away from spicy and crunchy sauces, as those tend to be higher in fat,” says Kaufman. Still, she adds, “Treating yourself with sushi is a great way to spend time with friends.”

8. Hadid Gets Her Favorite Dessert Delivered
Hadid is a fan of grasshopper pie ice cream, she told Harper’s, and almost cried when her favorite ice cream spot near her gym shut down. But thankfully for Hadid, there’s another shop in New York City, and she has found a hack. “Now I’ll just Postmate pints of it to my apartment.”
Doing so may be a wise strategy for Hadid, says Palumbo. “If dessert doesn’t cry out to you every day, then it’s safe to keep in your freezer, but if knowing it’s there makes you tempted to overeat, it might be a better idea to go out for it than have it delivered,” she adds.
Plus, Turoff gives Hadid a thumbs-up for opting for a treat she’s really into. “If you have a craving, don’t just have a handful of dry cookies — go out and get the best cookie you can find,” says Turoff. “I want people to have a healthy relationship with dessert and feel good about eating something they find delicious rather than feeling obligated to buy diet desserts.”
9. Hashimoto’s Disease May Shape Hadid’s Diet in Part
Based on Hadid’s motto, she strives to eat clean, which means avoiding processed foods and eating more veggies and lean protein, and that’s a good thing, says Kaufman. “A dietitian or doctor will likely tell a person with an autoimmune disease like Hashimoto’s to eat clean,” says Kaufman. “It helps with overall inflammation.”
Your doctor may advise you to avoid or limit soy, too, says Kaufman. “Sometimes excess soy does have an effect on the thyroid,” she adds. According to the Mayo Clinic, soy may interfere with the way the body absorbs thyroid medication.
In addition, people are more likely to have Hashimoto’s disease if they have another autoimmune disorder, like lupus and celiac disease. If that’s the case, you’ll likely want to discuss with your doctor whether you should go gluten-free, adds Kaufman. Dairy may also be inflammatory for some, according to the Arthritis Foundation.
“The consensus is usually that people with Hashimoto’s who eliminate gluten, soy, and dairy feel significantly better,” says Palumbo. That said, Palumbo says that those three ingredients are a huge part of the American diet, so it’s important to talk to your doctor before making a dramatic change.

10. Hadid Has Fired Back at Body Shamers Online
In February, after internet commenters were attacking Hadid for her slimmer-than-usual figure, she fired back on Twitter, explaining that being diagnosed — and then treated — for Hashimoto’s has played a role in her weight fluctuations: “For those of you so determined to come up w why my body has changed over the years, you may not know that when I started @ 17 I was not yet diagnosed w/Hashimoto’s disease; those of u who called me ‘too big for the industry’ were seeing inflammation & water retention due to that.”
Since getting on the right medications, she’s seen a positive change in her hormone levels and her weight. The model went on to say, “Although stress & excessive travel can also affect the body, I have always eaten the same, my body just handles it differently now that my health is better. I may be ‘too skinny’ for u, honestly this skinny isn’t what I want to be, but I feel healthier internally and am still learning and growing with my body everyday, as everyone is.”
Later in her Twitter rebuke, Hadid said, “Learn to have more empathy for others and know that you never really know the whole story” — which are words that everyone can subscribe to.
1. Boxing is her go-to workout
Bella’s physique is down to a combination of cardio and strength workouts with a heavy focus on boxing.
“When time is on my side, I train with my coach for intensive sessions,” the Victoria’s Secret angel told Vogue Paris. “I run non-stop for 20 minutes followed by a boxing session and finally a series of weights targeting the abs and glutes. We keep the routines varied, so the sessions are always fun.”
The supermodel is also a fan of barre workouts, which use ballet techniques for a full body-burn.
“Definitely boxing. But also Body Ballet, I’ve only tried it out once but I can see the long term results amongst my friends.”
And that rock hard six-pack? Bella says she uses “nothing other than boxing and a series of targeted ab workouts.”

The 22-year-old trains with Rob Piela, founder of ‘The Ocho System’ and trainer at the renowned Gotham Gym in New York City.
Although she does make an exception for her sister Gigi Hadid, who she sometimes spars with.
“She’s a bad-ass, who is strong and sturdy both mentally and physically.”

3. Commitment is key
Bella doesn’t skimp when it comes to a sweat sesh and it’s that commitment that gets her results. The model told Vogue Paris that the key to a good workout is to “put in 100% from the start to the end of a workout.”
In the lead up to a big event or runway show, Bella works out up to three hours a day.
“I think that if you just stick to something you can really achieve so much,” she said “It’s crazy but I think that you know if you set your mind to something I think you can succeed.”

4. She sticks to a pre and post workout routine
Bella has a few non-negotiables when it comes to her pre and post-workout habits.
“I count on a smoothie, a juice or a protein drink 30 minutes before the session,” she told Vogue Paris.
“After the session I eat something full of protein like chicken and wholegrain rice. It’s ideal to strengthen the muscle mass and to increase the effects of the session.”
Her warm up and cool down is is key, stretching for seven to 10 minutes before and after the session to “relax and lengthen the muscles as well as to improve the performance.”

5. Her diet is flexible
Bella’s obsession with carbs is well documented and for the model, balance is key. Plus when you’re working out like she does you can afford to be flexible with your eating habits.
“If you want to have a piece of bread, go have a piece of bread,” she told People after the 2016 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show. “I’m going to eat pasta right now.”
Bella’s go-to breakfast is “an egg sandwich on a plain bagel.” And she doesn’t buy into diet fads.
“One time I wanted to be healthy and got a gluten-free bagel, but I promise you, they suck.”
For lunch it’s usually “salmon or chicken and veggies,” she told Harper’s Bazaar. “If not, then pasta. I like having a good protein meal because I get really tired if I eat too much, so I try to fill myself up with things that will make me feel good.”
“I order a lot of green juices and keep them around on set,” she adds. “I have ginger shots in a cooler and I’ll drink one if I’m feeling low.”
If she doesn’t have time to make dinner for herself, she’ll often order food in. “I used to make dinner for myself all the time, but now when I leave work I order food,” she says. “Westville is the restaurant I always order from. The sautéed kale is my favourite.”

6. She mixes hobbies with hard work
Fans of Ms Hadid would be well aware of her long-time love for horses. She even planned to complete in the 2016 Olympics but was forced to give up her dream after being diagnosed with Lyme’s disease. Now she’s back on the horse (literally) enjoying horseback riding when busy schedule allows.
And the pastime is a major workout, relying on strength, balance and coordination.
“Horseback riding is an isometric exercise, which means it uses specific muscles to stay in certain positions, in this case, keeping balanced on the horse,” Dr. Stout explains. “As a result, postural strength becomes very important in horseback riding.”

Supermodel Gigi Hadid’s Metabolic Disorder
From gracing 16 covers of Vogue to strutting down the catwalks of dozens of fashion week shows, to say that supermodel Gigi Hadid is busy would be an understatement. But despite her jam-packed schedule, the 21-year-old still finds time to maintain a rigorous exercise routine. While she grew up playing volleyball, now, the secret behind the Victoria’s Secret model’s sculpted abs and toned arms is her boxing workouts.
On the outside, the young model appears to be the epitome of prime physical fitness. But as the new face of Reebok’s #PerfectNever campaign, Hadid recently revealed her sculpted body is far from perfect. “My metabolism actually changed like crazy this year. I have Hashimoto’s disease,” she said, according to ELLE. “It’s a thyroid disease, and it’s now been two years since taking the medication for it.”
Reebok recently announced Gigi Hadid, who regularly boxes to stay fit and maintain her toned body, would be the new face of their #PerfectNever campaign.
So what exactly is Hashimoto’s disease and why is it messing with this model’s metabolism? This autoimmune disease causes your immune system to attack your thyroid gland, a little butterfly-shaped gland found in your throat that controls your metabolism through the production of hormones. When your thyroid gland is under attack, it can cause inflammation and reduce the functionality of your metabolism, muscle strength, weight maintenance, and mental functioning. Estimates vary, but upwards of 14 million Americans live with this common medical condition. It’s most often found in middle-aged women, but it can occur in men and women of all ages.
Because Hashimoto’s can cause a generalized slowing of one’s metabolism and reduction in their basal metabolic rate (or BMR), patients can experience swings in weight. ” can lead to changes in the way their body expends energy,” explains Dr. Reshmi Srinath, assistant professor of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Bone Diseases at Mount Sinai. “With a lower metabolic rate, people may gain excess weight eating a similar diet.”
Since her diagnosis, Hadid has adapted her lifestyle to accommodate these metabolic changes. Responding to a commenter who pointed out her recent weight loss and muscle gains on her Instagram, Gigi described why her exercise routine has changed her appearance since she first rose to fame as a 17-year-old model: “Yes, I’ve lost some ‘baby fat,’ but muscle mass from my intensive volleyball training in high school has changed over the years into lean muscle from boxing.” Her positive attitude proves that you don’t have to let a medical diagnosis get the better of your body goals.

The autoimmune disease, which decreases functionality of your metabolism-controlling thyroid gland, can cause weight gain and fatigue when not treated with proper medication.
Although the disease is essentially incurable, it’s quite manageable (as shown by Gigi’s killer bod at Victoria Secret’s 2016 fashion show). Doctors will typically prescribe a calibrated dose of thyroid replacement medicine to counteract your out-of-sync hormones. Zayn’s Struggle Sheds Light On Shocking Number Of Men Battling Eating Disorders
Zayn Malik is known for his sexy photos with girlfriend Gigi Hadid flooding all over IG, and for his sultry voice. He will forever be one of the handsome faces of One Direction, and one of the sexiest men around, period.
However, Malik recently opened up about something other than his fame and gorgeous girlfriend, and revealed his struggle with an eating disorder.
The 24-year-old talked about it in an interview with Sunday Times Style magazine, where he described the eating disorder “as a control thing.”
Every area of my life was so regimented and controlled, it was the one area where I could say, ‘No, I’m not eating that.’ Once I got over the control, the eating just came back into place, super naturally.
He would go days without eating a bite of food, and found that being back in the U.K. with his mom and her home cooking would help him feel better. He has also dealt with crippling anxiety and panic attacks.
He told Sunday Times Style, “People saw strength in that, and they didn’t seem to expect it from a guy, but they expect it from a female, which to me is crazy.”

This does raise the question about men and eating disorders, because most of the time we only hear about women dealing with them. However, eating disorders, be it anorexia or binge-eating disorders, affect both genders.
The scale does tip towards women. 0.9 percent of women will experience anorexia in their lifetime, while 1.5 percent will deal with bulimia. 3.5 percent of all women will deal with binge eating in their lifetime.
However, men also have shocking numbers. 0.3 percent of men will battle anorexia, 0.5 percent of men will deal with bulimia, and 2 percent of men will deal with a binge eating disorder.
Eating Disorder Hope reports “Eating disorders are a daily struggle for 10 million females and 1 million males in the United States.” Though one million is significantly less than 10 million, it’s still one million men who are struggling with an eating disorder.
Malik said it perfectly when he spoke to Sunday Times Style, “We’re all human. People are often afraid to admit difficulties, but I don’t believe that there should be a struggle with anything that’s the truth.”

I’ll tell you right now that Hadid is not a fan of typical gym sessions and running on a treadmill.
That being said, you can replicate the training of the supermodel quite easily.
Gigi Hadid is a big advocate against body shaming, and says she’s been trying to gain weight, but her super active lifestyle, on top of her training that keeps her nice and toned, makes it difficult.
Hadid is of course first a foremost a model, having made it to the Models.com Top 50 Models as early as 2014, but she’s also much more than that.
Hadid is an influencer with over 51 million followers on her Instagram, and also appearing on things other than just the top magazines in the world; such as film, television and even music videos.

At 5’10 she’s actually one of the tallest women we’ve seen at SHJ.

When we took at The Top Diets Among ALL Celebrities recently there was an overwhelming amount that felt the same way.
Hadid is actually even known for famously saying:
“Eat clean to stay fit, have a burger to stay sane”.
But Hadid doesn’t only love burgers, she also has other go-to choices as well.
“I love acai bowls,” she says. “We always took them to the beach growing up, so I guess it’s a little piece of home.”

Though plenty of models’ diets involve some method of fasting, Hadid has been open about the fact that starving yourself is never a viable option—for your health, or for your sanity. Speaking to SELF in 2016, Hadid said “If I don’t have milk and bread and eggs, then I can’t deal.” To wrap up, here’s a last bit from an interview with her trainer and Savour Flair: “It depends on the goals of the person, really. If someone is looking to build lean muscle, they would take in some sugar afterwards to get the glycogen levels up and protein to help rebuild the muscle. A smoothie is pretty ideal because it’s an engineered perfect balance of food. Carbs, fat, protein, and sugar – the nutritional content of smoothies is great. I personally like to eat, though, so would much rather have quinoa, salmon, and salad.”

Gigi Hadid’s workout routine is pretty straight forward.
Of course, like many celebrities we’ve seen, she does switch it up, but for the most part she has (like her diet) her go-to options.
Without a doubt, across the board from all the sources I was able to find, we know Gigi Hadid’s favorite workout is boxing.
To start I want to share something from Bravo TV about Hadid’s love for boxing (and why):
“I grew up playing volleyball and riding horses, so it was weird to move to NYC and just have to go to the gym and lift weights and run. I was so bored!” she says. “I started boxing and it became my new sport. It’s an amazing cardio and strength workout and I feel like I want to go to the gym whenever I can and get better.”
Although Hadid does give us an alternative as well:
“If boxing isn’t your thing, can swap it out for another cardio activity. I’ve always liked jump rope—it’s great for legs—or running . You just want to keep your heart rate up the entire time”.
In an interview with Hadid’s trainer and India TV News we also get a ton of additional information that will help us put together a routine that is not strictly cardio based.
There we find out four of Hadid’s favorite movements are:
- Donkey Kicks
- Bicycle Crunches
- Bicep Curls
- Tricep Extensions
So expect to see all four of these in some of the alternative training methods we create to go along with Hadid’s love for boxing and cardio-driven workouts.
Another way Hadid loves to train is what her trainer shared with Shape, which we’re told is:
“three minutes of boxing, and then one minute of doing a lot of different leg-focused strength-training moves”.

Alongside boxing, Hadid focuses on strength and muscle training, including up building her core muscles.
And to finish off we’ll have one last quote from Hadid’s personal trainer:
“She first came to me just to keep fit… I remember, it was about three and a half years ago. It was a fun session and we got along right away. She’s super nice and easygoing, and she’s really into boxing. I think her first post after the training session was “I just found my new addiction” or something along those lines. For us, it instantly took off as boxing a lot, which we incorporate all these other exercises with. We don’t just box for an hour straight. We would box, then do some donkey kicks, then box and do some bands, then box again and do some bicycle kicks. She’s a tremendous athlete.”

We’ll focus in on boxing, of course, but I’ll also be building you a full body training day, a Hadid style circuit, and also giving you a ton of alternative training methods not only mentioned by Hadid, but also her trainer.
