Does ejaculation affect testosterone levels?

What does male orgasm result in, biochemically?

Higher serum testosterone levels are seen during abstinence (3 weeks in cited study). Non-significant Luteinizing Hormone increases have also been noted. The difference between abstinence and non-abstinence appears to be about 0.5ng/ml when averaged out.

Although higher testosterone levels are seen with abstinence, orgasm does not acutely affect testosterone levels in the blood. Although there is not much evidence for the spike in testosterone during abstinence, there does not appear to be counter evidence at the moment; it is an understudied topic.

Orgasm can cause a significant spike in prolactin levels (approximately 10 to 15ng/ml) immediately after and upwards to 10-20 minutes later, at which it starts to decline. This spike is dependent on ejaculation, and does not occur under non-orgasmic arousal. This spike may serve to suppress further sexual desires.

Various cardiovascular parameters, such as heart rate and catecholamine (adrenaline, noradrenaline) levels are increased during sex/masturbation and orgasm. Some measure of increase is seen during arousal.

Other various markers, such as Vasopressin and Follicle-Stimulating Hormone (FSH) remain unchanged.

Biochemical markers do not differ significantly when comparing orgasm after abstinence and orgasm without abstinence. Slight increases were seen in heart rate and catecholamine (adrenaline) levels, but may be due to self-reported higher arousal on average.

How is testosterone related to orgasm?

Testosterone has minimal interactions with orgasm, but is seen as a positive regulator of sexual desire or libido alongside dopamine. Agents that increase dopamine levels or act like dopamine can increase frequency of erections and subjective sexual arousal. Prolactin is the opposite here, and is a negative regulator of sexual appetite.

The actual ejaculatory process and erection process is mediated by serotonin and Nitric Oxide, as well as various mechanical contractions in the pelvic and penile region. Drugs or supplements that interfere with serotonin reuptake (such as SSRIs) can reduce the orgasm response, and may be useful in treating premature ejaculation.

Dopamine is reduced temporarily as prolactin rises, as the two can be seen as antagonistic of each other. Levels shortly normalize. The post-orgasm ‘orgasmic state’ of euphoria is mediated by prolactin and mimicked by ecstasy. Ejaculation does not impact your testosterone levels.

There’s a lot of rumour and misconception swirling around male abstinence.

Online communities like reddit’s “Nofap” group encourage each other to abstain from pornography, claiming to have better sex, more testosterone and increased confidence as a result of this self-imposed masturbation ban. But does an imaginary chastity belt really make you a better man?

Researchers from Zhejiang University set out to find out.

The scientists checked the testosterone levels of a group of abstaining men every day for a week. During most of the week, the testosterone fluctuations were minimal at best. However, on day 7, the researchers found that testosterone levels rocketed to a massive 145% of their baseline levels. That’s a lot of T.

Why are people searching for more testosterone? Because your T-levels account for much more than your sex drive.

Testosterone also increases the potential for muscle growth by forcing our body to increase protein synthesis, according to the Journal of Applied Physiology. Low testosterone is also a contributing factor in hair loss, weight gain and decreased bone density.

It’s unclear why it takes exactly 7 days to take effect, but there are safer ways to boost your T. Boston University found that frequent ejaculation is linked to a decreased prostate cancer risk, so building up a backlog may not be the best idea.

Combine our natural testosterone-boosting foods with a big-lifts leg day workout proven to spike your hormones, and you’ll have all the benefits of abstinence without the irritability.

Does Masturbation Increase Testosterone? Find Out

Science

By Donna Bellevue , Feb 22, 2017 02:10 AM EST Close

One common questions about masturbation is if it can increase testosterone in men. Several researches have been done to find the answer to that question. Experts say that the truth is that testosterone levels are not as simple as being solely affected by masturbation, or even by abstinence.

A 2001 study supports this statement when they subjected male participants to both sessions of masturbation and a period of abstinence. The goal is to compare which can increase, or affect testosterone level. The respondents were instructed to avoid ejaculating for three weeks.

The men were then asked to watch an erotic film and masturbate. Interestingly, the researchers found that there is a tiny drop of testosterone levels before the masturbation sessions started. Then after 21 days of abstinence, testosterone levels stayed close to the same figure during the 10-minute baseline set when they masturbated.

The researchers concluded that testosterone concentration did not show any significant changes during masturbation and when they abstained from it. However, there has been higher testosterone concentrations following the period of abstinence. Dr. Nan Wise, a sex therapist and psychotherapist who specializes in cognitive neuroscience says that the study shows testosterone levels increase if men abstain for seven days or more, the Broadly reports.

However, there hasn’t been any continued evidence of the finding. Although known to increase during sexual arousal and after orgasm by masturbation, the relationship between testosterone and masturbation isn’t simple. Dr. Wise explains that testosterone isn’t something that just spikes until it spills out during orgasm.

According to the Medical Daily, masturbation does not significantly affect testosterone levels. Hormone concentration involves factors, such as age, time of day, and physical activity. So this is one of the rare situations where doctors advise: If it feels good, do it,” Dr. Wise says.

Low T and Masturbation

Men’s sexual worries regarding low testosterone or low T typically center on their desire and ability to perform with a partner, but experts say low T also can affect a man’s interest in and enjoyment of masturbation.

Low T can strike at the heart of a man’s sex drive, and with the loss of that sex drive comes declined interest in any form of sexual activity, including self-stimulation, said Walter E. Brackelmanns, MD, a board certified psychiatrist, clinical professor of psychiatry at UCLA, and president and co-founder of the American Association of Couples and Sex Therapists.

“You have diminished libido,” Dr. Brackelmanns said. “It has to do with sexual desire, the physiological tingles you get. You’re going to be less interested in looking at sexually arousing things, you’re going to be less inclined to masturbate, and you’re going to be less inclined to seek out a man or a woman for sexual satisfaction.”

Research has linked low T to a lack of interest in masturbation. For example, a 2002 study published in the International Journal of Impotence Research found that men who had low T reported less frequent masturbation than men with higher hormone levels.

However, libido has been shown to improve after medical treatment for low T. A 2004 study in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism found that hormone replacement therapy using testosterone renewed men’s interest in all forms of sexual activity, including masturbation.

Low T and Sex Drive

Lack of sexual desire is the main warning sign when it comes to low T’s effect on sexuality, said Ronald Swerdloff, MD, a professor of medicine at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA in Los Angeles and chief of endocrinology at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center in Torrance, Calif.

“Individuals lose their interest in sexuality and sexual drive, and it affects different people in a spectrum of ways,” Dr. Swerdloff explained. “If testosterone is low enough and sexual interest is impaired, they may lose all aspects of sexual drive, both with themselves and with partners.”

This effect mainly has to do with testosterone’s effect on the sexual response triggers inside the human brain. “It does this primarily by acting on the brain,” he said. “Arousal is a central nervous system mediated event, and the more complex the animal, the more sophisticated it becomes.”

Erectile dysfunction during masturbation is another potential warning sign of low T, Swerdloff added. It may become difficult to achieve erection, or erections may not be as potent. However, a lack of desire remains the major warning sign for low T.

Getting Checked for Low T

Sexual therapist Rachel Needle, PsyD, a psychologist with the Center for Marital and Sexual Health of South Florida, executive director of Whole Health Psychological Center, and an adjunct professor at Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., warned that a man should not assume that he has low T simply because he’s lost interest in masturbation or other sexual activity.

“There are many factors that can lead to decreased sexual desire as well as difficulty with erection and masturbation,” said Dr. Needle. “So, it is important to get an accurate testosterone level before assuming the low sexual desire, for example, is a result of low testosterone.”

Does Masturbation Cause Hair Loss? – Here’s The Answer!

These days, we receive a ton of questions related to masturbation hair loss. Many people give a question “Does masturbation cause hair loss?”, while some ask “Can masturbation cause hair loss?” Keep reading our blog to know whether they are linked or not.

Masturbation Stimulate Your Body to Produce Dihydrotestosterone (DHT)

There are many different reasons causing male pattern baldness. One of them is the increasing of a male sex hormone – dihydrotestosterone. It is also known as DHT.

DHT is not good for your hair. It connects cells in your scalp and miniaturizes the hair follicles as well. So the follicles can not get enough nutrients to help the hair grow. Your strands will be thinner, weaker and fall out.

DHT is a reason that leads to baldness in men

Why do people claim that masturbation causes hair loss? The reason is that the body releases hormones, including DHT, during sex and masturbation.

The body releases hormones, including DHT, during sex and masturbation. However, real scientific data are different from this claim. Masturbation does not affect the releasing DHT process and other male hormones. Of course, there is no hair loss masturbation.

Does Excessive Masturbation Cause Hair Loss?

Does frequent masturbation cause hair loss? In a word – “No.” There is no evidence that proves the myth “masturbation is a cause leading to hair loss”.

In theory, semen contains proteins that are necessary for hair growth. But masturbating or having sex does not lower the amount of protein, so hair loss and masturbation have no correlation. Premature hair loss is caused by many factors like genetics, hormonal changes, excessive hairstyling, etc.

masturbation does not cause hair loss

In 2013, there were many studies found that the average protein concentration of semen is 5,040 milligrams (mg) per 100 ml. An ejaculation usually produces 5 ml of semen, so the average amount of ejaculation contains about 252 mg of protein.

There are different myths existing about masturbation, but no one can prove it as the cause of any specific physical ailments. Alongside hair loss, there is no proof that masturbation will lead to blindness, cause impotence in men and infertility in women, etc.

If you are not sure about our answer, join some health forums or give questions on websites such as Quora, Reddit, and so on. For example, you ask “Does excessive masturbation cause hair loss quora?” Let’s check the answer yourself.

Does Ejaculation Control Affect Hormone Balance?

This is a variation on the above myth “masturbation stimulates your body to produce DHT”. Clearly masturbation affects your hormonal balance, but it is not linked to hair loss.

Masturbation releases a significant hormone called oxytocin. It is a peptide hormone that stimulates the pleasure centers in your brain. That’s why masturbation makes people feel good. One more time, we affirm that there is no link between masturbation and hair loss. It is not related to the thickness and health of your natural tresses.

Some studies indicate that oxytocin can affect the converting process of testosterone to DHT. But there is no evidence showing that DHT is impacted by masturbation.

Does Masturbation Cause Baldness?

DHT is an endogenous hormone in the genitals, seminal vesicles, skin, and hair follicles. When your body does not have enough testosterone, it will convert testosterone into DHT. Many people said about masturbation testosterone hair loss, so it is true or not. In theory, the increase of DHT will lead to excessive hair loss, which can cause baldness. DHT acts 5-6 times greater than for testosterone.

there’s no link between masturbation and baldness

When DHT levels in the blood rise, it causes hair follicles to shrink. This makes your hair thinner and weaker, leading to hair loss. Your hair is thinner and thinner as your old hair falls out but there is no replacement. The prolonged hair loss causes baldness. Hence, masturbation does not play a real role in the process of causing baldness and stop hair growth.

If you notice that your hair falls out too much, higher than the general number (50-100 strands per day), it is more likely to be a side effect of sensitivity to DHT. Or it is a sign of the lack of nutrition, unhealthy habits, age, and so on. It is not the result of masturbation too much. The myth “masturbation linked to hair loss” is not true. To deal with this hair problem, you can take the medicine that lower your DHT levels in your body or change your diet and lifestyle. Also, avoid being prolonged stress. These simple ways can eliminate your hair loss and baldness.

Masturbation Side Effects

According to the result of a study, among adolescents aged 14–17 years in the US, there is 48 percent of females masturbate while this number in males is 74 percent. At the age between 57 and 64, roughly 32 percent of women masturbate and 63 percent of men. There are many bizarre claims around masturbation, but they are untrue. Experts say that masturbation is a normal sexual activity, but it has few side effects. Let’s check.

In fact, there is no final conclusion of whether sexual activity decreases or increases the risk of prostate cancer. A 2008 study indicated that regular masturbation could increase the risk of prostate cancer. In contrast, a 2016 study gives a different result. Many researches found that the man has a lower risk of prostate cancer if he ejaculated 21 times per month or more.

excessive masturbation might decrease sexual sensitivity

Masturbation disrupts daily life. If some individuals masturbate more frequently, it makes them miss their works or even important occasions. Besides, it interrupts their daily functioning. In this case, please speak about your problem with your doctor. He will suggest the best therapy to manage this sexual behavior. Moreover, masturbation also affects sexual sensitivity.

Takeaway

We think that you have your own answer to the question “Does masturbation cause hair loss?” Also, masturbation doesn’t cause baldness, blindness or any physical health problems.

In case you are experiencing hair loss or baldness, please treat the problem. Among many ways, wearing human hairpieces (wigs, toppers, toupees) is the fastest and most effective way. It does not harm your hair and offers long-term wearing. Only apply it on your head, you have beautiful hair.

4 minute read

There is a Reddit community called r/NoFap with 463k members.

It is male-dominated and members are united by a belief that masturbating is bad for confidence, self-esteem and motivation.

To me, it almost resembles a cult. Members preach about abstinence as though it was some kind of religious gospel, with nothing in the way of scientific evidence to back up their claims.

Yet… the claims seem to be true!

If you’re a man, you know what I’m talking about – the sudden fatigue and emptiness that washes over you ten seconds after your self-induced bliss. A temporary loss of your “cutting-edge” mental powers for the next day or two.

There are no good scientific articles on the Internet that explain this phenomenon but perhaps this will be the first.

1. A Weird Twist To My Testosterone Hypothesis

I used to believe that the male orgasm produced some kind of negative hormonal response.

Specifically, I predicted that testosterone levels declined after orgasm, and this would explain the lower motivation levels in men. This made sense because:

  • Motivation is associated with dopamine (Wise, 2004)
  • Testosterone promotes dopamine release (Putnam et al., 2001).

All it took was a cursory glance of the available literature to debunk this hypothesis.

  • “A significant difference was not apparent between testosterone measurements taken before and after orgasm” (Fox et al., 1972)
  • “Plasma testosterone was unaltered by orgasm” (Exton et al., 2001)

Clearly, testosterone is not the reason why men feel less motivated after orgasm… or is it?

Men who had abstained for 3 weeks had a higher baseline level of testosterone

This graph shows that men who abstained from masturbating for 3 weeks (solid black squares) had a significantly higher baseline level of testosterone than men did not practice abstinence (empty white squares).

It turns out that masturbating doesn’t decrease testosterone levels BUT abstinence increases testosterone levels up to a certain point – further research has shown the positive effects plateau at the 7-day mark.

Interesting twist.

2. High Prolactin Levels

One particular graph caught my eye when I was analyzing the Exton et al. 2001 paper. I noticed that a particular hormone called prolactin spiked dramatically upon male orgasm (at the 40-minute mark).

An interesting surge in prolactin occurs upon the male orgasm (40 min mark)

Prolactin is the hormone responsible for the refractory period in men and it works by decreasing sexual arousal.

Of greater relevance is the fact that high prolactin levels make men feel tired and fatigued. This is partly why men tend to fall asleep after sex.

Science Fact: Medicines like cabergoline and pramipexole lower prolactin levels and can shorten the male refractory period. However, the side effects of low prolactin include severe lethargy and nausea.

It does make sense that high prolactin levels would make men less motivated, since they become more fatigued and tired…

The issue is with this hypothesis is that prolactin levels are only elevated for slightly over an hour (Kruger et al., 2002). Yet, many men experience brain fog and lowered motivation for 1-2 days following orgasm.

Clearly we need more explaining power.

3. Mineral Depletion

What do men literally lose after an orgasm?

On average, men lose 3ml of ejaculate per orgasm which contains (Owen & Katz, 2013):

  • 6mg of fat
  • 3mg of cholesterol
  • 10mg of sodium
  • 0.5mg of copper
  • 0.5mg of zinc
  • Trace amounts of magnesium, calcium and B12

There it is – zinc is one of the most important minerals for men and it is significantly depleted with EVERY orgasm.

Zinc is important because:

  • It promotes healthy testosterone, free testosterone and DHT levels (Netter et al., 1973)
  • It promotes cognitive ability (Aquilani et al., 2009)

In other words, every time a man orgasms, his hormones and crisp thinking ability go right into the gutter.

The US recommended daily intake of zinc for men is 11mg, so an orgasm reduces zinc levels by roughly 5%. This may not seem like a lot, but look at it this way: A 5% decrease in hydration levels makes you go from thirsty to collapsing from severe dehydration.

Furthermore, according to a fitness trainer in Singapore who regularly gets his clients to do blood tests, many Singaporeans are deficient in zinc due to diet (Yahoo, 2011).

If you are a man already deficient in zinc, the lethargy and lack of motivation you experience after orgasm may be even more severe. It might be a good idea to supplement with zinc.

I personally use OptiZinc, which is complexed with methionine to make it more bioavailable

4. Dopamine Receptor Desensitization

This is my latest and most confident conjecture on why men feel less motivated after orgasm.

Every time our brain receives a large hit of ANY neurotransmitter, our respective receptors become desensitized.

Here’s an example. Shortly after drinking a cup of coffee, you feel a crash that is symptomatic of low dopamine levels. This is because caffeine induces a dopamine spike in the brain (Solinas et al., 2002).

This crash lasts all day, and perhaps even two days if you were heavily chugging coffee.

Think about how much more dopamine is released in the brain when you orgasm, compared to what a cup of coffee does. This leads to a proportionate (i.e. massive amount) of dopamine receptor desensitization.

Receptor desensitization is something that takes days, even weeks to recover from.

I once took a supplement called Phenibut two days in a row – it is a full GABA agonist, meaning it activates the GABA receptor very strongly to produce calming effects. For the next three days I experienced anxiety, sadness and did not feel like myself.

Having desensitized dopamine receptors has the same effect as having low dopamine levels. This explains the whole array of post-orgasm side effects – low motivation and energy, inability to focus, even anxiety in some cases.

Action Steps for Men

  • Don’t masturbate too frequently if you want to be a highly motivated person
  • Practice abstinence for up to 7 days if you want maximum testosterone levels
  • Supplement with zinc, the most important mineral for men. I personally use a bioavailable zinc complex called OptiZinc

When you’re trying to pack on muscle or build your endurance, you have to consider every aspect of your health. What you eat, how much you sleep, and what you do all matters—even sex.

If you’ve ever wondered how sex can hurt or help your workout, this video from the PictureFit YouTube channel explains all. The big myth that worries a lot of athletes out there is that sex or masturbation lowers your testosterone levels, thus lowering your gains. But that’s not quite the case.

Testosterone is an androgenic hormone that plays a crucial role in building muscle for both men and women. High levels of it can allow for more muscle protein synthesis, or muscle growth. Practicing abstinence can elevate your testosterone levels, yes, but there’s no evidence that suggests it will increase your gains. And the effects of having an orgasm on testosterone levels have actually shown to be non-existent.

Basically, sex and masturbation aren’t detrimental or helpful when it comes to moderate or intense exercise in any way. Your heart rate elevates for several hours after having an orgasm, and it can elevate even more if you work out post-sex or masturbation, but that’s about it. There’s no reason to limit your sexual activity while you work on building the body you want.

Does Masturbation Lower Testosterone Levels?

It’s common knowledge that a man’s testosterone levels decline as we get older. When it gets below a certain point, men start having symptoms. For instance, studies show that men with low testosterone are at an increased risk of developing diabetes. Men in the lowest 25 percent of testosterone levels had two to three times the risk of fractures because testosterone is crucial for bone density in men. In four different population studies involving a total of several thousand men, men with low testosterone died younger than men with normal testosterone.

As men age and lose their testosterone, they are at higher risk for elevated cholesterol, heart attacks, strokes, dementia, and diabetes. Also, with low testosterone, men put weight on around the middle, their brains don’t function as well, and they get grumpy, tired, lose their energy, and have problems with erectile dysfunction.

Hormonal decline is a primary factor in the aging process. Hormones are the chemical messengers that control virtually every biological process in the body. They tell your cells what proteins to manufacture and your organs which functions to perform. When hormone levels decline, less information is transmitted, and the body works less effectively. Research compiled by the Life Extension Foundation clearly shows that declining hormone levels are a potent risk factor for disease, aging, and death.

Although hormone production begins to taper off during our 20s, the effects are often not felt until we reach our forties or fifties, when hormone levels have declined to the point that our function is noticeably affected. This condition is known as andropause. Andropause has only recently been recognized as medically significant. Both menopause and andropause contribute to symptoms of aging and the susceptibility to disease.

One of the most powerful things we can do to slow biological aging is to compensate for these age-related changes in hormone production.

The goal of hormone supplementation is to replicate the optimal levels and ratios of youth. By restoring hormone profiles to youthful levels, you literally create a younger body. A more youthful appearance, improved function, and increased resistance to disease follow naturally.

The two most popular forms of stimulating hormones are supplementation and hormone replacement therapy HRT. For those seeking a more natural, supplementation approach, we’ll address the benefits of a transdermal patch solution for optimum absorption and bioavailability of this vital hormone.

In this article, we’ll further discuss the role of testosterone, elaborate on the effects of Low T, offer additional solutions to lower testosterone levels, and follow our fictional character, Paul, as he attempts to answer the question, “does masturbation lower testosterone levels?”

Read on to learn about the relationship between masturbation and testosterone levels. If you want to know the answer “does masturbation deplete testosterone,” you can skip to the end of the article.

However, we recommend you read the full article to understand the role that testosterone plays in your life. It’s essential information that everyone should have. To start, let’s meet Paul.

Paul’s Testosterone Problem

Paul is suffering from low testosterone. He finds he is frequently fatigued, and he is losing muscle mass. Also, his sex life is lagging. He has lost his libido and, he sometimes finds it difficult to maintain an erection.

One of Paul’s friends tells him to avoid masturbating since masturbation lowers testosterone levels. Paul has heard this before but isn’t sure about the relationship between masturbation and testosterone levels.

Naturally, Paul begins to wonder, “does masturbation deplete testosterone?”

Eventually, he schedules an appointment with his doctor. The doctor advises Paul that supplementation might be a good idea. But he also suggests that Paul research ways to boost his testosterone levels naturally.

Paul agrees to return for a follow-up visit and promises to supplement in the interim. Feeling a bit embarrassed, Paul neglects to ask about masturbation and testosterone levels. However, he’s still curious about the question he’d posed to himself earlier, “Does masturbation deplete testosterone?”

Having forgotten to ask about masturbation and testosterone levels, he tries to find natural ways to increase his test levels. He reads about different foods he can try to boost his testosterone.

Some foods that benefit testosterone levels include oysters, leafy greens, garlic, eggs, bananas, pomegranates, red meat, and tuna.

Later, Paul decides to look further into the relationship between masturbation and testosterone levels. He’s determined to find the answer to the question that’s been eating at him: “does masturbation deplete testosterone?”

The Role of Testosterone

Testosterone is a vital hormone for both men and women. For men, testosterone plays a key role in the development of reproductive tissues. These include the prostate and testes.

It also maintains secondary sex characteristics like body hair, bone mass, and increased muscle mass. Testosterone is often seen as a valuable hormone during adolescence and puberty.

However, testosterone is also essential as a lifelong component to your overall health.

The human body naturally produces less testosterone as we age. Production peaks in our twenties and then declines by 1 – 2% per year after that. If testosterone levels dip too low, they can significantly impact your health and well-being.

Effects of Low Testosterone

Low testosterone can cause a myriad of health problems. It can cause sexual performance issues, lowered libido, reduced bone and muscle mass, weakness, and fatigue. In some cases, low testosterone can also contribute to depression, infertility, mood swings, and weight gain.

Additionally, in women, low testosterone levels can impact the menstrual cycle and even cause difficulty conceiving. As you can readily see, healthy testosterone levels are essential for both men and women.

But let’s revisit Paul’s question regarding the relationship between masturbation and testosterone levels. Should you avoid masturbating? Does masturbation deplete testosterone?

Read on to the next section. We’ll discuss a few solutions to low testosterone and whether or not implementing a full halt to masturbation should be one of them.

Learn more about Low Testosterone symptoms here

Solutions for Low Testosterone

As mentioned in our opening, there are two primary forms of stimulating the testosterone hormone, supplementation, and hormone replacement therapy. HRT must be prescribed by a medical professional and requires periodic testosterone injections. However, not everyone needs or wants to receive injections. Many people prefer to improve testosterone more naturally with diet, exercise, and supplementation.

Now, we come back to the question that we posed at the beginning of this article: “does masturbation deplete testosterone?” Let’s talk about that.

The belief that masturbation negatively impacts testosterone levels is widespread. Many people believe that masturbation and testosterone levels have an inverse relationship, meaning that the more you masturbate, the lower your testosterone levels become.

There is no evidence to support this belief, and the topic is a difficult one to research. There have been conflicting reports about the effects of orgasm on testosterone in both men and women.

One study found that sexual activity temporarily increased testosterone levels in men. These conclusions continue to be debated. Nevertheless, it appears that orgasms may cause a small, temporary increase in testosterone levels.

Conversely, another study indicates that concentrations of testosterone may increase temporarily after a period of sexual abstinence followed by orgasm. This could imply that periodic sexual abstinence has benefits for men looking to raise their testosterone levels naturally. However, it’s unclear if this boost in testosterone concentration is long-term or short-lived.

Based on other known factors, it‘s unlikely that sexual abstinence leads to any permanent testosterone boost.

What seems clear at this point is that sexual activity, including orgasm, does not adversely affect testosterone levels, even temporarily. If anything, the opposite may be true.

Paul’s Solution

So, let’s get back to Paul.

Paul has started increasing his intake of testosterone-boosting foods and is supplementing. As a result, since beginning this new regimen, he has noticed significant improvement. He has more energy, fewer problems with sexual performance, and he feels more positive throughout his day.

Paul has seen some weight loss since starting his treatments, his muscle mass is returning closer to what it once was, and his exercise routine is less challenging.

We love a happy ending.

AgeForce Testosterone Patches

At the outset, we promised to introduce a superior method for testosterone supplementation. This concept will appeal to those who despise painful injections and inconvenient visits to the doctor’s office. Let us illustrate how the transdermal patch is also preferred to testosterone supplements in pill or capsule form.

Consider that for a testosterone supplement in pill or capsule form to work effectively; it must pass through and survive:

  • The extreme pH changes in the stomach as well as the small and large intestine
  • The billions of bacteria that guard your intestines
  • The gut immune barrier, which constitutes a “first line of defense” against intruders

As you can imagine, it’s quite challenging to formulate an oral supplement that can effectively survive this onslaught. How much of the original active ingredient do you think makes it into your bloodstream?

Generally, the “loss” of active ingredients in any supplement can range from a few percent (as in caffeine) to levels of 90% or more for resveratrol.

You’re paying good money for oral supplements that are largely destroyed by stomach acid, filtered out by your liver, or urinated out.

The benefits of a time-released patch; improved absorption, and superior bioavailability, make the AgeForce Testo100 Testosterone Booster transdermal patch the most effective testosterone supplement on the market to help raise your levels and alleviate the symptoms of low testosterone. With the AgeForce transdermal patch, the ingredients are available to your body’s cells without having to detour through your digestive tract, and through the liver before entering circulation. And, our convenient Skin Patch can be left on the skin throughout your normal daily activities.

FRIDAY, March 13, 2015 (HealthDay News) — Experts have long assumed that as a man’s testosterone level declines, so does his sex life. But a new study suggests the reverse may be true.

“Most people in or out of medicine assume that a lowered serum testosterone may cause reduced sexual activity. But our study questions, if not fully refutes, that assumption and suggests it is the other way around,” said Dr. David Handelsman, a researcher at the University of Sydney, in New South Wales, Australia.

And skyrocketing sales of testosterone supplements are being fueled by that popular assumption, even though it might not be correct, Handelsman added.

But one doctor not involved with the study questioned the finding, noting that other lifestyle factors might be affecting testosterone levels as men age. And the study wasn’t designed to take those factors into account.

In the study, the researchers evaluated more than 1,700 men, age 70 and above, in Sydney. The researchers tested the men at the study’s start and then again two years later, when the number of men in the study had dropped to about 1,300.

At both visits, the men answered questions about sexual functioning, including how often they were able to get and keep a viable erection, how often they had sexual activity that led to ejaculation, including masturbation and intercourse, and how much desire for sex they had compared to when they were 50.

The researchers also measured blood levels of testosterone and other hormones at both visits. They found that a decline in testosterone, although it was less than a 10 percent drop, was linked to decreased sexual activity and desire, but not to fewer erections.

“The reduction in sexual function was strongly associated with reduction in serum testosterone in our study,” Handelsman said. However, the decrease was small and other research has shown that it takes a 70 percent or 80 percent drop in testosterone to affect sexual functioning, he added.

“So, the effect is too small to cause reduced sexual function, and it must be a cause or an effect, it is mostly likely an effect ,” Handelsman said.

Many guys begin their NoFap journey with a severe handicap in the testosterone department.

Although this website is as pro-testosterone and pro-NoFap as possible, there are some things that I cannot solely attribute to chronic masturbation. Sure, porn-induced erectile dysfunction is one of the hallmarks of sexual exhaustion, but when it comes to having low testosterone levels, there are a few additional factors that you should keep in mind.

This does imply that yes, NoFap is a good thing when it comes to raising your testosterone.

For starters, never forget the study that started the NoFap movement.

NCBI:

The purpose of this study is to gain understanding of the relationship between ejaculation and serum testosterone level in men. The serum testosterone concentrations of 28 volunteers were investigated daily during abstinence periods after ejaculation for two phases. The authors found that the fluctuations of testosterone levels from the 2nd to 5th day of abstinence were minimal. On the 7th day of abstinence, however, a clear peak of serum testosterone appeared, reaching 145.7% of the baseline ( P < 0.01). No regular fluctuation was observed following continuous abstinence after the peak. Ejaculation is the precondition and beginning of the special periodic serum testosterone level variations, which would not occur without ejaculation. The results showed that ejaculation-caused variations were characterized by a peak on the 7th day of abstinence; and that the effective time of an ejaculation is 7 days minimum. These data are the first to document the phenomenon of the periodic change in serum testosterone level; the correlation between ejaculation and periodic change in the serum testosterone level, and the pattern and characteristics of the periodic change.

Years ago, guys would have had to take steroid injections to achieve a 145.7% increase over baseline testosterone levels. If someone tries to talk you into not believing the boosting effect sexual deprivation has, just point them to the above NCBI link.

Normal Free Testosterone Levels

There are several different kinds of testosterone measures one can take.

The 2 most important measures are total and free testosterone. The total includes the full amount of T flowing through your veins, which means it includes free, SHBG-bound, and albumin-bound testosterone. This means its value is always going to be higher than the free-flowing T.

Free flowing testosterone on other hand is all about the not yet utilized testosterone. For many people, this is the more important measure, as having free-flowing testosterone means that the body can have its choice of where to send it to.

More specifically, if you lift weights, free testosterone is going to help you build more muscle mass and strength. Nice.

Studies have shown a direct correlation between how strong a man is, and how socially dominant he is.

ResearchGate:

Handgrip strength (HGS) is highly heritable and a good overall measure of strength and muscle function. Indicative of blood testosterone levels and fat-free body mass, HGS is also highly sexually dimorphic. Recent psychological research shows that HGS is correlated with a number of social variables, but only in males. We conducted three studies to further investigate the relationship between HGS and measures of aggression and social competition among adolescents. Consistent with previous reports, correlations were almost exclusive to males, but this was only visible during late adolescence (i.e., high school). These findings support evolutionary hypotheses regarding grip strength in male-male competition and suggest that similar to measures of testosterone, HGS is a measure that is predictive of social behavior in older adolescent males.

Apart from finding out the obvious fact that grip strength is related to being better company to women, the study also found that this measure becomes more important as time goes by – older adolescent males had a bigger benefit than younger males.

This means that if you start pumping iron when you are 18, you can easily be in the top 1% of guys by the time you hit 25-30.

There is literally no activity that is not better when you are stronger and healthier.

NoFap Improves Your Health

Apart from the factually-verified info that not masturbating boosts testosterone, we should also keep in mind that a person that has removed digital addictions from his life is going to have an easier time creating healthy habits in his life.

You can’t just stare at the wall for 8 hours a day. Even if you work for 10 hours, you still have at least 6 hours of free time, and that’s not counting the weekend. If you don’t waste time on your phone, you will naturally feel an urge to do something better.

Endocrine Disruptors are a Big Problem

Although you can defeat the fapping demon and live a clean lifestyle, that’s just one fight you’ve won in the grand scheme of things.

Endocrine disruptors are the new trendy thing to talk about these days.

Wikipedia:

Endocrine disruptors are chemicals that can interfere with endocrine (or hormone) systems at certain doses. These disruptions can cause cancerous tumors, birth defects, and other developmental disorders. Any system in the body controlled by hormones can be derailed by hormone disruptors. Specifically, endocrine disruptors may be associated with the development of learning disabilities, severe attention deficit disorder, cognitive and brain development problems; deformations of the body (including limbs); breast cancer, prostate cancer, thyroid and other cancers; sexual development problems such as feminizing of males or masculinizing effects on females, etc.

Recently the Endocrine Society released a statement on endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) specifically listing obesity, diabetes, female reproduction, male reproduction, hormone-sensitive cancers in females, prostate cancer in males, thyroid, and neurodevelopment and neuroendocrine systems as being affected biological aspects of being exposed to EDCs. The critical period of development for most organisms is between the transition from a fertilized egg into a fully formed infant. As the cells begin to grow and differentiate, there are critical balances of hormones and protein changes that must occur. Therefore, a dose of disrupting chemicals may do substantial damage to a developing fetus. The same dose may not significantly affect adult mothers.

These are chemicals that are found literally everyone around your house and your food. The more highly processed or plasticky something is, the more probable it is that it’s going to contain some amount of endocrine disruptors.

Worst of all is that most endocrine disruptors work in one direction – they lower your testosterone, and some may even boost your estrogen (the female sex steroid). There aren’t many of these chemicals that are going to do the reverse thing.

You will never live a life free of endocrine disruptors, but you can decrease your overall usage. Eat more natural, raw food, wash your vegetables and fruits, and try to use more glass, ceramic and steel containers. Don’t reheat food in the microwave in plastic dishware. Don’t ever buy pre-packaged frozen meals.

Being Overweight Destroys Testosterone

BMI (body mass index) is a far from ideal weight measure, as it doesn’t take into account how much muscle mass a person has. But it is good enough for people that are just starting out with NoFap and are looking forward to improving their health.

If your BMI is over 25, you are officially overweight. Use a BMI calculator to figure this out. If you have a BMI over 30, that means you are obese. If you want to be a lean, fat-free individual with muscle definition you want to have a BMI under 22-22.5.

Apart from fapping to porn and being exposed to endocrine disruptors, being overweight is the third biggest testosterone lowering factor.

ISSM:

Recent research from Ireland suggests that such lifestyle changes may benefit men with low testosterone. In a report presented at the Endocrine Society’s 2012 annual meeting, researchers studied a subgroup of 293 middle-aged overweight men with prediabetes. (Prediabetes occurs when a person has higher-than-normal blood sugar levels, but those levels aren’t high enough to be considered diabetes.)

Twenty percent of the men in this group had low testosterone. For one year, they exercised for 150 minutes each week and consumed fewer calories and less fat. At the end of one year, only 11% of the men still had low testosterone. On average, the men’s testosterone levels increased about 15%.

There are other studies that also examine the link between obesity and testosterone, but what matters is this finding from Ireland. When overweight men started to exercise, they lost a bunch of weight and their testosterone levels increased by 15%.

Keep in mind testosterone starts to fall by 1% every year once you are above the age of 25-30. Getting 15% more testosterone is the same as becoming 15 years younger. And check this – 15% is just the average from the study.

If you are a dedicated individual with a mission in life, I bet you can easily go over 30%, and maybe even 50%, depending on how low your baseline was.

NCBI:

Leptin, produced in adipose tissue, influences the functioning of the testes directly and indirectly. The secretion of testosterone is directly mediated by the leptin receptors that are present in the leydig cells of the testes. Moreover, leptin acts on the hypothalamus-pituitary-testicular axis, regulating the functioning of the testes indirectly.

Adipose tissue is involved in the metabolism of androgen to estrogen known to be converted by ARO found in fat tissue. The adipose tissue also affects hypothalamus-pituitary-testicular axis, reducing the release of gonadotropin. A strong androgen DHT, in addition, is converted to an inactive metabolite by AKRIC present in adipose tissue.

Androgens have a negative effect on adipogenesis and lipid synthesis by up-regulating the AR for catecholamine, thus increasing lipolysis. In addition, androgens reduce the LPL activity that is necessary for intracellular esterification of adipocytes, adjusting central fat accumulation.

In conclusion, adipose tissue and androgen influence each other in a bidirectional and reciprocal way.

Adipose tissue is the medical term for body fat, which is a type of loose connective tissue that is mostly composed of adipocytes (fat cells). Its main purpose is to store energy, but it appears that adipose tissue is also hormonally active – in a bad way.

The study says that fat cells converts testosterone into estrogen, so even that little T that overweight guys have is lost when the fat cells convert the testosterone into estrogen – causing even more problems. Low T is problematic for a variety of things – getting more estrogen is going to make things like ED even worse.

There is no way this can be a coincidence – the fact that being fat lowers testosterone AND makes your body secrete more estrogen.

There is only one conclusion you can make out of this:

Being overweight forces your body into “hibernation” mode.

This makes sense in a biological way, similarly to how fapping to porn makes you disinterested in socialization. If your brain gets a “signal” that you have achieved success in some important area of life, the body goes into hibernation mode. Two of the most important hibernation triggers are sex and having access to high-calorie food.

Logically speaking, becoming lazy after getting laid is a safe, win-win situation. If you got lucky, you should rest and reap the benefits.

Your nervous system has simply not evolved to be stimulated by artificial stimulants. Once you feel the taste of high-caloric food and your fat cells become larger, you will start to develop symptoms such as depression, low libido, and procrastination as a way for your body to “celebrate” the copious amount of food you’ve eaten.

Fapping to porn does the same thing – you feel like you’ve mated with hundreds of new partners, and that’s why you feel you should stay at home and enjoy the “achievement.”

To sum everything up:

NoFap is a Prerequisite to Increasing Your Testosterone Levels.

P.S. If you thought I was joking about artificial stimulants, take a look at what chewing gum does to you:

Chewing Gum and it’s Effect on Testosterone

ScienceDirect:

Effects of sugarless chewing gum as a stimulant on progesterone, cortisol, and testosterone concentrations assessed in saliva

Sugarless chewing gum is a frequently used stimulant to collect saliva samples for hormone analyses. This study tested the effect of sugarless chewing gum on cortisol, testosterone, and progesterone concentrations measured in saliva samples collected from 8 individuals at different times of the day (morning, evening) and under different collection conditions (gum, no gum) as well as in a saliva pool and water, either untreated or treated with chewing gum. Sugarless chewing gum raised all progesterone concentrations by 20 to 40 pg/mL, corresponding to a twofold increase, relative to no-gum controls and attenuated salivary testosterone and cortisol concentrations. It is recommended that the use of sugarless chewing gum as a stimulant should be avoided with saliva samples.

Sugarless chewing gum increases salivary progesterone measurements twofold. Chewing gum also affects salivary cortisol and testosterone levels. Passive drooling is the recommended method of saliva collection.

Wow, chewing gum has such a large effect on hormones, that they had to do this study in order to warn other researchers against taking saliva samples if a study participant has been chewing gum.

Also funny to note is that they found out about this result, but didn’t really care or note that further research should be done about whether the changes in the saliva have a further effect on blood concentrations of T and E.

What are the Benefits of Having High Testosterone?

Reading this article, you obviously have some idea that you would like to have more testosterone. Perhaps you’ve watched a documentary or read an article elsewhere, and though you should give this subject a bit more research.

In addition to some of the things you know about testosterone, here are a few additional benefits of having high testosterone levels:

  • More mental and physical energy
    • Reduced brain fog
    • Increased focus and clarity of thought
  • Increased competitive drive (one of the best benefits in my opinion)
    • Less aversion to risk-taking
    • Better handling of stressful situations
    • Fewer feelings of anxiety
  • Increased muscle size and strength (the most visually obvious benefit, which is why some bodybuilders inject their bodies with testosterone)
  • Decreases the chances of developing Alzheimer’s and dementia
  • Increased libido and better overall erectile function

NoFap Testosterone Questions and Answers:

Can You Get Testosterone Overload From NoFap?

There is no way you can suffer from a T-overload while doing NoFap. The reason why is simple: the body has mechanisms through which it organizes the amounts of the thousands of different chemicals and enzymes it needs.

If you were able to overload on testosterone so easily, professional bodybuilders would be doing it on a daily basis so that they can get even more muscle mass.

Remember – being healthier does not come with any added risks. Being unhealthy is risky – which is what masturbation is.

What is the NoFap Testosterone Timeline?

The NoFap testosterone timeline is basically the time period where you can spot the differences in your testosterone levels.

There is only one significant study done on the subject, and that is the Chinese study done several years ago. That study noted a 45.7% increase in free testosterone after seven days of abstinence from masturbation. After that, we have no conclusive data, although many people have reported feeling better as more weeks went by.

One word of warning: there is a possibility that testosterone may drop after three weeks of not ejaculating. It is not sure whether the drop is related to the testosterone going to other areas of the body, as guys doing semen retention have reported improved subjective feelings at the 6 and 12-week period, despite any possible testosterone drop.

If you are worried about this, you can ejaculate once every three weeks in order to offset any possible T-drop.

Can NoFap Reduce Testosterone?

As the answer above suggested, there is a chance that free testosterone may decrease after three weeks without ejaculating. The risk is probably overblown, and the drop may be related to some further improvements in the functioning of the body.

You can masturbate every three weeks (without pornography) if you are worried. That’s going to give you both the testosterone increasing benefits of NoFap, and stop any possible future decrease.

Will Relapsing Lower Testosterone?

It all depends on when you would relapse.

If you relapse in the first 1-2 weeks of your last ejaculation, the relapse is going to drop your testosterone. If on the other hand, you relapse after 3 or more weeks of NoFap, your testosterone may actually improve. But the psychological harm of the relapse may outweigh the benefit of any possible rise in testosterone levels.

Does Testosterone Have an Effect on Sleep Quality?

Testosterone has been linked to improved sleep quality in a few different scenarios.

NCBI:

The data on the effect of sleep quality on testosterone may depend on whether testosterone is given as replacement, in supratherapeutic doses, or in the context abuse. Experimental data suggest that testosterone may modulate individual vulnerability to subjective symptoms of sleep restriction. Low testosterone may affect overall sleep quality which is improved by replacement doses. Large doses of exogenous testosterone and anabolic/androgenic steroid abuse are associated with abnormalities of sleep duration and architecture.

The study says that while low testosterone can harm sleep quality, high testosterone may not give any additional benefits over normal testosterone levels.

Another caveat is that exogenous (in this case, meaning injected) testosterone may, in fact, worsen sleep quality. But that’s a given – as all things that aren’t natural are bad for you.

Is the NoFap-Testosterone Link a Myth?

Some people may think that the NoFap-Testosterone link is a myth or a placebo effect. That is not true because there is scientific evidence that NoFap has a positive effect on testosterone. NoFap also has an effect on DHT, which is arguably even more important than testosterone.

Even if some people feel better due to the placebo feelings of high testosterone – if that leads to higher confidence levels and better life quality, that would mean that NoFap worked for them.

Can Higher Testosterone Improve Beard Growth?

There are no specific studies done on the subject, so we are not sure yet. There are reports that men have improved hair growth after beginning NoFap.

Testosterone is usually correlated with hair loss and beard growth, so if NoFap boosts testosterone and hair growth at the same time, it is possible that it may have an effect on beard growth. In anecdotal discussions, no one has even noticed a decrease in beard quality after started NoFap. Most guys observed no visible changes or improvements to their beards.

Can Alcohol Lower Your Testosterone Levels?

Alcohol is one of the most testosterone lowering chemicals in existence. Antidopamine suggests going out more as a naturally healthier substitute for masturbation, which might include alcohol drinking in some situations.

If you are in a place where most people are drinking, you should get a glass as well. One drink is not going to shoot down your testosterone.

Is Masturbation the Main Cause of Low Testosterone in Young Males?

Masturbation is probably not the main cause of low testosterone in young males. However, it is a contributing factor, even if in an indirect fashion. Guys that would be living healthier, more fulfilling lives are left being isolated and depressed due to the effects of chronic masturbation.

Living unhealthy and being depressed are testosterone killers.

Can Testosterone Cure Depression?

Testosterone can have a positive effect in curing depression. Depending on the severity, it may not completely heal a person, but it can offer a net positive effect.

Is There a Link Between Testosterone and Cortisol?

According to studies available online, cortisol can have a negative effect on free testosterone levels. That would mean that anything that can lower your cortisol can, in theory, increase your testosterone.

The confusing part is coffee. Coffee has been reported as a testosterone boosting drink (especially when taken around exercise time), yet coffee releases a lot of cortisol. So we do not yet know the full effect of cortisol timing and release on testosterone levels.

Can Testosterone Cure or Worsen Acne?

Some studies have reported that overproduction of testosterone can lead to more acne on a person’s skin.

NCBI:

Several studies have demonstrated that there is an association between local overproduction of active androgens and acne. Acne patients produced higher rates of testosterone and 5α-dihydrotestosterone (5α-DHT) in their skin than healthy individuals.29 High testosterone levels have been implicated with enhanced sebaceous gland activity in humans30,31 and consequently with diseases marked by hyperseborrhea, such as Acne vulgaris.

However, that usually happens in teenagers. Adults don’t such high rates of androgen production, which would mean that boosting your testosterone levels is not going to worsen your acne problem. High testosterone may not solve your problem either, but that’s a topic for a different discussion.

Can Testosterone Cure Joint Pain?

As testosterone promotes tissue growth, it can stimulate growth in the ligaments and tendons in your body.

The most important factor for muscle growth is testosterone, so the same should be true for the tissues in the joints. There is a problem though;

  • Joints have less blood flow, meaning even if ligaments do repair to a certain degree, the growth is going to be slow
  • Many parts of the joint may not fully heal despite high testosterone levels

You can try eating more protein while working on your T-levels. That can be helpful, but trying to improve your form, posture and removing the activity that caused your injury may be of further help.
