How Long Does It Take For A Water Pill To Kick In?

A water pill is useful in bringing down the weight by helping in the secretion of excessive water content from the body. However, the main aim of reducing the weight may not be possible with the pill alone. Additionally, the medicine is a short-term period solution. A better way to reduce weight is by opting for natural means – maintaining diet and including exercises in daily activities.

Water pills contains chemicals which help in activating the filtration process carried out by kidneys. The excess secretion helps the person to lose water content. Water pills are suitable for patients suffering from water retention. The excessive secretion helps in eliminating the sodium content from the body, which is the reason for the cause of water retention in the first place. As the pill also helps in secretion of salts, the body regains the needed value of potassium, ensuring that there is no excessive damage to the kidney functioning.

Water pills have an immediate effect, and a person will show the results immediately. The medicine begins to work in about two hours from the intake, and the patient will start passing the urine in excess and large quantity. The effect of the water pill medicine remains for a minimum of 6 hours and a maximum of 8 hours. Depending on the requirement, doctors opt for the water pill medication to reduce the water retention illness along with other pills to bring the condition to normal. Upon reaching the normal state, the doctor will then proceed with the treatment to ensure that the person does not show any signs that cause side effects and damage to kidneys or liver.

Excessive Use Of Water Pills

Excessive use of water pills is not the solution, as they have side effects. Upon consuming the first water pill medicine, a person may feel fatigue, fever, headache, and find trouble in communicating with others. In rare cases, the people reported the need for emergency attention. The reason is that the chemicals present in the water pill tablet are capable of destroying the functionality of the kidney or liver due to excessive stress caused by the secretion of water.

A Better Way To Lose Weight

A better way to lose weight is by opting for natural methods. These include the decrease in the intake of the food, keeping away from foods that are rich in fat content, quitting alcohol and smoking, and including exercises. Apart from the lifestyle changes alone, one should also visit a dietician to learn more about the foods that are good for the health.

It is crucial to remember that the diet menu changes. The dietician will provide the meal based on the diagnosis carried out and the outcome of the results. For people suffering from water retention, consulting the physician will be helpful, as they will include water pills for a short period along with other medications to treat the situation.

Trying to reduce the weight by 250 calories per day is the optimum range for any individual. In addition, one should consider the age, gender, and other health conditions before they begin the journey of changing their lifestyle and diet to ensure that they are on the right track.

Keeping in good health is always the need of the hour. However, the difference is how one carries it out. Although water pills are helpful, they are not the sole reason behind the reduction in weight or reduce water retention illness.

Diuretics for Hypertension

Diuretics, also known as water pills, belong to a class of medications that remove excess salt and water from the body. They are often used to treat hypertension, or high blood pressure. High blood pressure can be a contributing factor in the development of various forms of heart disease.

When chosen as a treatment for hypertension, diuretics have proven to be effective in preventing heart attack and stroke in many individuals. Certain foods and herbs also possess diuretic effects, helping you to urinate more often to excrete excess fluids and sodium.

Pharmaceutical Diuretics

Prescription diuretic medications are grouped into three main types.

Thiazide diuretics help treat hypertension by causing the blood vessels to widen and the body to remove any extra fluid. Examples of thiazides include metolazone (Zaroxolyn), indapamide (Lozol), and hydrochlorothiazide (Microzide).

Loop Diuretics

Loop diuretics remove excess fluid by causing the kidneys to produce more urine. These include furosemide (Lasix), ethacrynic acid (Edecrin), and torsemide (Demadex).

Potassium-sparing diuretics encourage the body to get rid of fluids and sodium. However, they do this without causing a loss of potassium, which is a vital nutrient. Examples of potassium-sparing diuretics include triamterene (Dyrenium), eplerenone (Inspra), and spironolactone (Aldactone).

Each of the three types of diuretic medication increases the amount of sodium you excrete through urination, but they affect different areas of your kidneys. Your kidneys are the filters through which toxins and excess fluids are flushed from your body. When you take a diuretic medication, the drug signals to your kidneys that you need to get rid of more sodium. Water binds to the sodium and is then removed during urination, leaving you with a lower blood volume. The reduction in blood volume slows the rate at which blood flows through your blood vessels, helping to decrease your blood pressure.

Thiazide and loop diuretics may also cause you to lose potassium in addition to water and sodium. Potassium is an important mineral that maintains healthy fluid levels and regulates heart and muscle function. Your doctor may advise you to take a potassium supplement or to eat foods rich in the nutrient to combat low potassium levels. Potassium-rich foods include:

  • bananas
  • avocados
  • raisins
  • beans
  • dark leafy greens, such as kale and spinach
  • squash
  • mushrooms
  • potatoes
  • yogurt
  • fish

Potassium-sparing diuretics don’t pose as much as a threat to your potassium levels. However, they aren’t as effective in treating hypertension as the other types of diuretic medications, so they are often prescribed along with other drugs.

Thiazide diuretics are the primary treatment method for people who have hypertension-related heart disease. However, your doctor will tailor your drug regimen to your specific health concerns. Your specific medication may contain more than one type of diuretic agent in a single pill or dose.

Risks and Side Effects

Diuretics are generally safe for most people when taken as prescribed.

The most common side effect of diuretics is increased urination. Your potassium, glucose, and cholesterol levels may fluctuate depending on the type of diuretic you’re taking. Your doctor may run blood tests to measure your levels throughout treatment.

Other side effects may include:

  • headaches
  • dizziness or lightheadedness
  • difficulty sleeping
  • muscle weakness or cramping
  • increased thirst
  • irregular menstruation
  • impotence, or difficulty achieving and maintaining an erection
  • gout, or conditions that cause swelling and pain in the joints of the foot

Side effects are likely to decrease over time. Make sure to notify your doctor if you experience uncomfortable or prolonged side effects while taking a diuretic. Your doctor may adjust your dosage or switch you to a different type of diuretic medication.

Natural Diuretics

Certain foods and herbal supplements can have a diuretic effect on your body, increasing your urine output. Examples of natural diuretics include:

Ginger Root

When brewed into a tea or used as a spice in cooking, it can stimulate the body to remove surplus salt and water. Ginger root can also ease stomach upset.

With its high water content, celery can help increase urine production and aid in the removal of excess sodium and fluids.

Dandelion Root

This herbaceous root encourages the excretion of urine by helping the kidneys to flush out extra sodium and other toxins.

Natural diuretic aids may be beneficial for your high blood pressure, but they should be used with caution. Taking a natural diuretic, even unintentionally through your normal diet, along with a pharmaceutical medication could lead to dehydration and other potentially harmful drug interactions. Speak with your doctor to learn more about which natural diuretics are appropriate to use for treating your condition.

Should certain people avoid taking diuretics for hypertension?

Women who are pregnant should avoid taking natural or prescription diuretics but a prescription diuretic may be necessary to treat serious medical conditions as determined by the doctor. Hydrochlorothiazide (Microzide) has been used in infants and children and is generally considered safe for all ages, unless they are allergic to hydrochlorothiazide.

Water pills, known in the medical world as diuretics, are a mainstay of treatment for those with some heart problems, lung disorders and certain types of high blood pressure. In these conditions, the body has a problem regulating the amount of water in particular parts of the body. This can happen for a variety of reasons, but the result is that fluid can back up, leading to a condition called edema.

From This Episode:

Should You Be Taking a Water Pill?

When are diuretics normally used?

In these conditions, physicians use diuretics to encourage the body to discard some of the fluid it has built up over time. Diuretics are called water pills because they help the body get rid of water by preventing your kidneys from holding on to it. As a result, you pee out more water than usual. While a little fluid buildup might not seem like a big deal, it can cause serious health problems depending on where it shows up. Heart failure, for example, can cause fluid to build up in the lungs making it hard for a person to breathe. If this happens too quickly, it can be rapidly fatal.

Why are people using diuretics for weight loss?

About two thirds of the human body is water by weight. That means that losing significant amounts of water can rapidly drop your body weight. Realizing this, some individuals saw an opportunity to use diuretics as a short-term weight loss product. Unfortunately, the weight loss isn’t real. Losing weight by dropping water weight leads to dehydration. As soon as you succumb to the thirst you’ll start to feel as your body loses water, you’ll gain all of that weight back.

It’s important to recognize that the main reason you should lose weight is for the health benefits it brings. Losing fat weight is associated with a lower risk of cancer, diabetes, heart disease and a host of other illnesses. Losing water weight can lead to dangerous dehydration that can be fatal in severe cases.

Why is non-prescription use of diuretics dangerous?

Your body normally works hard to make sure there’s enough water in the body to keep your organs functioning. This also includes making sure your body has the right balance of electrolytes in your blood. Diuretics mess with both of these things. They force your body to lose more water than usual and also push out vital electrolytes with that water. If too much water and too many electrolytes are lost, organs can start to malfunction. This shows up initially as cramps, fatigue, dizziness and weakness, vomiting and swelling. In severe cases, the heart can beat irregularly and even stop. People may also experience seizures and deadly organ failure.

In addition, diuretics can interact with other medications you might be taking and make them more or less effective. In some cases they can have a serious and potentially deadly interaction that could put you in hospital or kill you.

Why doesn’t this happen when my doctor prescribes it?

Diuretics are generally only prescribed to people whose bodies aren’t able to regulate water and electrolyte balance anymore because of some disease. In this case, the water pill is helping to bring them back to normal. A person with no health issues is at serious risk for damaging side effects because they’re using the medication to do something abnormal to their body, which throws off their water and electrolyte balance. Doctors also usually work closely with individuals starting these medications to make sure the dose is just right and that the medication won’t interact with other drugs they may be taking. Those taking diuretics for weight loss often don’t know how much to take and may take more than they should thinking the benefit will increase with a higher dose.

When should I take a diuretic?

Diuretics should only be taken when prescribed by a doctor to you for a specific reason. You should never use diuretics for weight loss and you should never take a friend’s or relative’s medication or supplement for any reason.

What products should I look out for?

Some non-prescription rapid weight-loss pills use diuretics, often illegally. They can do this because the supplement industry has minimal regulations and oversight when it comes to what ends up on shelves. Think twice before buying a weight-loss supplement, especially if it promises rapid results and if it has any indication of being a diuretic, natural or otherwise. Look at the label for:

  • Caffeine
  • Theobromine
  • Pamabrom
  • Triamterene
  • Dandelion extracts
  • Guarana
  • Juniper seeds (can cause kidney damage)
  • Equistine (can cause brain damage)
  • Horse tail or shave grass (can cause seizures)

Remember, the weight loss you see on a diuretic is a fake and dangerous weight loss. It may help you drop a few pounds, but it harms your health and can have serious consequences. If you’re concerned your weight may be a problem, talk to your doctor about weight-loss programs that might help.

Ringing in the ears or loss in hearing occurs. Diuretics are a significant treatment for high blood pressure.

Weight reduction should be done in a healthy manner – through healthy eating and exercise.

Caffeine is an item that delivers stimulus to the body to reduce the effects of physical exhaustion and mental drowsiness.
