- Normal: Less than 120/80 millimeters of mercury (mmHg)
- Elevated: Systolic between 120 and 129 mmHg and diastolic less than 80 mmHg
- Stage 1: Systolic between 130 and 139 mmHg or diastolic between 80 and 89 mmHg
- Stage 2: Systolic at least 140 mmHg or diastolic at least 90 mmHg
- Hypertensive crisis: Systolic over 180 mmHg or diastolic over 120 mmHg, with patients needing prompt changes in medication if there are no other indications of problems, or immediate hospitalization if there are signs of organ damage
There is much research that supports pursuing lower blood pressure for prevention of heart disease. In one key study, participants who got their systolic pressures below 120 saw their incidence of heart failure, heart attack, and stroke fall by one-third, and the risk of death fell by nearly a one-quarter. That’s a substantial drop.

If I say cinnamon, you say … sugar? It’s a popular combination, of course.
But if you’re interested in the health-promoting effects of cinnamon, you may want to think anew about the spice.
For instance, says John Critchley, executive chef at Bourbon Steak Restaurant in Washington, D.C., why not add it to savory dishes? He uses cinnamon to create a spice and herb rub for lamb loin. He also whips up a great spinach salad with raisins, pine nuts and cinnamon.
Critchley is a fan of the intense aromatics in cinnamon, especially in Saigon — a cousin of the cassia varieties of cinnamon most commonly used in the U.S. and Europe. And he says adding cinnamon to spice blends is a great way to layer flavors when you’re cooking.
And when you start to look at the potential health-promoting effects of the spice, there’s even more incentive to experiment with it in the kitchen.
Cinnamon comes from the bark of trees. It has long been considered a medicinal plant. There are several varieties, harvested from southern China to Southeast Asia.

For years, there have been hints that adding cinnamon to your diet can help control blood sugar. And a recent spate of studies adds to the evidence that the effect is real.
“Yes, it does work,” says Paul Davis, a research nutritionist with the University of California, Davis. He authored a recent meta-analysis published in the Journal of Medicinal Food that concluded that cinnamon lowers fasting blood glucose.
“According to our results, it’s a modest effect of about 3 to 5 percent,” Davis says. This is about the level of reduction found in the older generation of diabetes drugs, he says.
That makes the findings of interest not just to the 25 million Americans who already have diabetes, but also to the 80 million other people — nearly 1 in 4 of us — who have elevated fasting blood-glucose levels. Doctors refer to this as pre-diabetes, meaning blood sugar that doesn’t meet the cutoff for a diagnosis of diabetes but that does indicate a high risk of developing the disease.
There’s also a recent meta-analysis concluding that cinnamon can help lower lipid levels, including LDL cholesterol (the unhealthy type) and triglycerides.
What’s not well understood is exactly how much cinnamon is optimal, and whether the effect is transient. It’s hard to tell from the studies whether it leads to a significant, long-term reduction in blood sugar.
For people who already have diabetes, cinnamon is not an alternative to medication. But for people with pre-diabetes who are interested in using diet to manage their blood sugar, it’s one of many strategies worth considering, says diabetes educator Emmy Suhl of the Joslin Diabetes Center in Boston.
“The evidence is still inconclusive,” Suhl notes, but cinnamon “is inexpensive,” “and it tastes good.”
So, is there an ideal variety of cinnamon to be sprinkling into your oatmeal, or blending into your spice rubs and salads?
Well, as we recently reported in The Salt, cassia cinnamon is the variety you are most likely to encounter in a grocery store. But cassia can contain high levels of coumarin, a naturally occurring ingredient that, when eaten in large enough amounts, can cause reversible liver toxicity in a small group of individuals sensitive to it.
“So the warning is, for cinnamon lovers, is to beware of excessive intake of cassia,” says diabetes educator Angela Ginn.
And Ikhlas Khan, a researcher at the University of Mississippi’s School of Pharmacy who recently looked at the amounts of coumarin in cinnamon-flavored foods in the U.S., recently told The Salt that people who do want to use cinnamon for medicinal purposes should consult their doctor before taking large amounts.
Some experts suggest investing instead in Ceylon cinnamon, a milder — and pricier — variety of the spice that comes from a tree distinct from but related to cassia.
How much cassia is too much? For an adult who is sensitive to coumarin, the limit is about a teaspoon a day, according to the daily tolerable intake set by the European Food Safety Authority.
So if you’re a cinnamon lover and your goal is to increase your daily intake, using Ceylon cinnamon can reduce the risk of consuming too much coumarin.
Another option: cinnamon capsules. In many of the studies evaluating the benefits of cinnamon, researchers have used cinnamon supplements. And as word has spread about the potential health benefits, sales of supplements have grown — about 20 percent over the past few years, totaling $32 million in 2012, according to the Nutrition Business Journal.

Yield 4 portions
2 pounds lamb loin
1 pound baby spinach
1 cup golden raisins
2 tablespoons preserved lemons, chopped
1 tablespoon plus 1 teaspoon Saigon cinnamon
1 tablespoon ras el hanout
1 tablespoon sumac
¼ cup olive oil
1 lemon, juiced
- Season lamb loin with ras el hanout, sumac and 1 tablespoon Saigon cinnamon and sear in 2 tablespoons of olive oil over high heat.
- Cook until medium rare or about 12 minutes constantly turning over medium heat.
- Let rest on your cutting board.
- In a mixing bowl combine the baby spinach, cinnamon, raisins and preserved lemon with olive oil and lemon juice.
- Slice the meat and arrange on a platter.
- Plate the salad in a bowl

Cinnamon is an aromatic spice obtained from the inner bark of two related trees: true Celon cinnamon comes from Cinnamomum verum (also known as Cinnamomum zeylanicum) while Dutch, cassia or baker’s cinnamon comes from Cinnamomum cassia (also known as Cinnamomum aromaticum). Cinnamon and blood pressure
Cinnamon not only lowers blood pressure in people with hypertension, but also has beneficial effects in people whose blood pressure is only had slightly raised and falls within the definition of hypertension in the US, but not currently in the UK.
The latest study, involving 28 healthy volunteers with a slightly raised blood pressure, assessed the effects of taking true Ceylon cinnamon (from Cinnamomum verum also known as Cinnamomum zeylanicum) at three different doses: 85mg, 250mg or 500mg cinnamon per day, for 3 months. All three doses showed a similar result, with blood pressures falling by an average of 6.7/4.8 mmHg (from 124.0/76.8 mmHg down to 117.3 /72.0 mmHg) and staying low throughout the rest of the trial. Their total cholesterol and ‘bad’ LDL-cholesterol also reduced significantly. This is the first study to show that cinnamon can lower blood pressure even in healthy people, which suggests that even a low dose of cinnamon may help to slow or prevent the progression of hypertension.
How does cinnamon lower blood pressure?
Cinnamon contains several unique substances such as cinnamaldehyde and ethylcinamate which have several different blood pressure lowering actions. Cinnamon extracts improve blood vessel elasticity and promote blood vessel dilation through mechanisms involving nitric oxide, activation of potassium channels in smooth muscle, and by improving the flow of calcium in and out of cells. Cinnamon also lowers blood pressure through a mild diuretic effect that reduces the amount of sodium and fluid in the circulation.
Cinnamon and type 2 diabetes
Cinnamon has a long history of use in treating type 2 diabetes. Cinnamon appears to activated insulin receptors so they respond to insulin hormone more effectively. This reduces insulin resistance, improves the uptake of glucose into muscle and fat cells, and reduces the production of abnormally high amounts of new glucose in the liver.
The effects of cinnamon were tested in 59 adults with type 2 diabetes who took either 1,200mg cinnamon per day, or placebo, for 12 weeks. At the end of the trial, systolic blood pressure was reduced by 3.4 mmHg in those taking cinnamon but had increased by 1.9 mmHg in those taking placebo – a combined difference of 5.3 mmHg.
Another study involving 58 people with type 2 diabetes compared the effects of taking 2g cinnamon per day, or placebo, for 12 weeks. All volunteers continued to take their normal medications. In those taking cinnamon, blood pressures reduced by 132.6/85.2 to 129.2/80.2 mmHg. Significant reductions in fasting blood glucose and HbA1c (a measure of glucose control over the preceding 12 weeks) also seen. The researchers concluded that cinnamon supplements could be considered as an additional dietary option to regulate blood glucose and blood pressure levels along with conventional medications used to treat type 2 diabetes mellitus. Overall, the combined results from three trials show that cinnamon extracts can significantly lower blood pressure in people with prediabetes (metabolic syndrome) or type 2 diabetes by an average of 5.39/2.6 mmHg
Which form of cinnamon is best?
Most commercial cinnamon comes from so-called Dutch or baker’s cinnamon, Cinnamomum cassia (also known as Cinnamomum aromaticum) which has a sweeter, less intense flavour than true Ceylon cinnamon.
True cinnamon has a lower content of coumarin (a blood thinning agent) than cassia cinnamon, and a higher content of active aldehydes, so true cinnamon supplements may be better for long term use for lowering blood pressure.
However, a paper published in the British Journal of Nutrition in 2012 suggested that Cinnamomum cassia was the only type to have beneficial effects on glucose control in diabetes, and that true Ceylon cinnamon was less effective.
Do if you only want the blood pressure lowering benefits, select a cassia cinnamon supplement. If you also want to improve yoru glucose control, then select a true Ceylon cinnamon supplement.

For reducing blood pressure, relatively small doses of 85mg true Ceylon cinnamon per day appear to have the same effect as higher doses of 500mg cinnamon per day.
For improving glucose control, then doses of 1g cassia cinnamon, three times per day, are most effective.
Some cinnamon supplements contain concentrated extracts so that lower doses are needed eg a 5:1 concentration means that 200mg cinnamon extract is equivalent to 1000mg raw cinnamon. Check labels for the manufacturer’s recommended dose and do not exceed this except under medical advice and supervision.
NB If you have diabetes, always keep a close eye on your glucose control when taking a supplement. Check with your doctor first, and ensure you know how to adjust your medication if needed.

Nikki’s experience of having high blood pressure caused by liquorice
Nikki explains how liquorice caused her to develop high blood pressure. She talks about how research led her to the discovery and why she feels it’s important to let others know.
Bid to get even healthier
I am a very healthy 50 year old. I have been self-employed for 26 years and have a very enjoyable, stress-free job. I have a good BMI (21.7) and exercise regularly. I am very health conscious about what I eat; predominantly organic, no processed or fast foods, low sodium and low sugar. I don’t smoke and I drink alcohol very infrequently and of course I’m not diabetic.
In early August 2013, in a bid to get even healthier, I decided to stop drinking caffeinated tea in preference for herbal tea and substituted coffee for decaffeinated. I discovered a whole range of herbal teas, and tried several different types, before settling on a select few that I really liked; superfruits, chamomile and peppermint and liquorice. My favourite by a long way was the peppermint and liquorice and I started to drink this regularly.
Disbelief at feeling the pressure
You can imagine my disbelief, when at a periodic health check in December 2013, I was diagnosed with high blood pressure. I was told I should visit a doctor and have it monitored. I purchased a blood pressure monitor so that I could keep an eye on it. Over the next couple of months my blood pressure fluctuated, but seemed to reach steadily higher levels; sometimes getting up to 220/110.
In February 2014 I decided that I needed to get my blood pressure under control as it was dangerously high. The first doctor I saw prescribed potassium medication (Lorsatan potassium) to start taking immediately and arranged for me to have an ECG and blood test. I didn’t like the idea of taking medication without knowing the cause of my high blood pressure, so I decided not to take the tablets. A week later, both the ECG and blood test came back with no problems.
I went to a different doctor and he determined that I must have essential hypertension, although I have no family history of this. He prescribed two sets of medication (Ramipril and Lisinopril) on two different occasions, however, I reacted badly to both.
I stopped taking the tablets and returned to the doctor, and he suggested that I take a rest from medication to give my body a chance to recover. He also recommended that I go onto the waiting list for a 24 hour monitor to measure my blood pressure before prescribing further medication. I was never happy about taking medicine without knowing the cause and I always felt that there must be a trigger of some kind, but couldn’t think what that could be.
In my spare time, I explored the internet looking for possible ways to lower my blood pressure. I found out about the DASH diet (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) and started eating foods that I thought would help.
Chance find on the internet
In early April, whilst surfing the internet, I chanced upon a UK homeopathic website that suggested food groups to help and foods to be avoided. I glanced down the list and noticed that it recommended avoiding liquorice, as consumption of liquorice can lead to dangerously high blood pressure and dangerously low potassium levels (hypokalemia). It informed me that liquorice contains glycyrrhizinic acid, which sets off a chain reaction of biochemical events in the body which results in high blood pressure.
Instantly alarm bells sounded, as I realised that since September 2013 I had been consuming as many as 4-6 cups of liquorice and peppermint tea daily! I knew that something must have triggered the high blood pressure, but hadn’t linked it to my switch to herbal teas, as I had assumed that they are healthy. I further researched this and discovered that there have been instances of individuals being admitted to hospital after consuming too much liquorice. Seemingly, it is also not advisable to consume whilst taking ACE inhibitor medication (which could have contributed to my adverse reaction to the prescribed medications).
I immediately stopped taking the liquorice and peppermint tea and within the next week my blood pressure returned to normal levels.

I subsequently went back to the website from which I purchased the tea to look at the description of the liquorice and peppermint tea. There is nothing on the first page; however, if you click on the ingredients tab it states ‘This tea contains liquorice – people with hypertension should avoid excessive consumption.’ At the time I initially purchased the tea I didn’t have hypertension and to be honest, I hadn’t even noticed this before. On further exploration it appears some other herbal teas also contain liquorice, for example, some lemon and ginger teas, so it is worth checking the ingredients. I went back to the manufacturer and thankfully they have agreed to update their packaging and their website details.
High blood pressure is called the silent killer. That’s because it has no symptoms. Having high blood pressure (hypertension) increases your risk of heart disease, stroke, heart failure and kidney disease.
Six million Australian adults (34%) have high blood pressure – 140/90 millimetres of mercury (mmHg) or more – or take medications for it. Of those, four million have high blood pressure that isn’t treated or under control.
No wonder heart disease and stroke directly cost the Australian economy A$7.7 billion a year.
There is some good news. High blood pressure can be treated or prevented. Eating oats, fruit and vegetables – and beetroot, in particular – helps. So does avoiding salt, liquorice, caffeine and alcohol.
Optimal blood pressure is 120 mmHg or less over 80 mmHg or less. Lowering it by 1-2 mmHg can have a big impact on reducing your risk of heart disease and stroke, and the nation’s health care costs.
What to eat to lower your blood pressure
A review with five research trials included tested the impact of oats on systolic blood pressure (the first blood pressure number, which is the pressure at which the heart pumps blood) and diastolic blood pressure (the second number, which is when the heart relaxes) in about 400 healthy adults.

The researchers found that systolic blood pressure was 2.7 mmHg lower and diastolic blood pressure was 1.5 mmHg lower when participants ate around 60 grams of rolled oats (a packed half-cup raw oats) or 25 grams of oat bran per day.
This quantity of oats or oat bran contains around four grams of a type of fibre called beta-glucan.
For each extra one gram of total daily fibre, there was an extra 0.11 mmHg reduction in diastolic blood pressure.

Recommended minimum daily adult fibre intakes are 30 grams for men and 25 grams for women.
While some of fibre’s effect is due to weight loss, soluble fibres produce bioactive products when they’re fermented in the large bowel. These work directly to lower blood pressure.
To improve your blood pressure, eat rolled oats or oat bran for breakfast, add to meat patties, or mix with breadcrumbs in recipes that call for crumbing.
Beetroot is extremely rich in a compound called inorganic nitrate. During digestion, this gets converted into nitric oxide, which causes arteries to dilate. This directly lowers the pressure in them.
A review of 16 trials of mostly healthy young men found drinking beetroot juice was associated with a 4.4 mmHg reduction in systolic blood pressure. But it found no change in diastolic blood pressure.
However a recent trial in 68 adults who already had high blood pressure found beetroot juice reduced systolic and diastolic blood pressure.

The men were randomly assigned to drink 250ml (one cup) of beetroot juice daily for four weeks or a non-active placebo.
Blood pressure in the men who drank the beetroot juice reduced over 24 hours, with systolic blood pressure 7.7 mmHg lower and diastolic blood pressure 5.2 mmHg lower.
Try wrapping whole fresh beetroot in foil and baking in the oven until soft, or grate beetroot and stir-fry with red onion and curry paste and eat as a relish.
Vitamin C, or ascorbic acid, is found in fresh vegetables and fruit. An average serve contains 10-40mg of vitamin C.
In a review of 29 short-term trials of vitamin C supplements, people were given 500 mg of vitamin C per day for about eight weeks.
Blood pressure significantly improved, with an average reduction in systolic blood pressure of 3.84 mmHg and 1.48 mmHg for diastolic blood pressure.

When only those with existing high blood pressure were considered, the drop in systolic blood pressure was 4.85 mmHg.
However, those at risk of kidney stones need to be cautious about taking vitamin C supplements. Excess vitamin C is excreted via the kidneys and can contribute to the formation of kidney stones.
One advantage of getting more vitamin C from eating more vegetables and fruit is that you boost your potassium intake, which helps counter the effects of sodium from salt.
What to avoid to lower your blood pressure
Salt or sodium chloride has been used to preserve foods and as a flavour enhancer for centuries.

Adults need between 1.2 to 2.4g of salt each day (one-quarter to a half teaspoon), which is equivalent to 460 to 920mg of sodium.
But in Australia seven out of ten men and three in ten women eat way more than that – and much more than the upper recommended limit of 5.9 grams of salt (about one teaspoon) or 2,300 mg of sodium per day.

If you add salt to food yourself this pushes your sodium intake even higher.
A review of studies involving 3,230 people showed that reducing salt intakes by 4.4 grams a day could reduce systolic blood pressure by about 4.2 mmHg and diastolic by 2.1 mmHg.
In those who had high blood pressure there were even bigger reductions of 5.4 mmHg (systolic) and 2.8 mmHg (diastolic).
Avoid foods high in sodium. Don’t add salt and try to choose lower-salt versions of processed foods.
Consuming one or more alcoholic drink a day is associated with systolic blood pressure that is about 2.7 mmHg and diastolic blood pressure 1.4 mmHg higher than non-drinkers.
Interestingly, when you first drink an alcoholic beverage, blood pressure goes down, only to rise later.

A rise in blood pressure after drinking alcohol is more likely to happen when you’re awake, rather during sleep.
The bad news is that larger amounts of alcohol increase your risk of high blood pressure, especially in men, but also to a lesser extent in women.
High blood pressure due to eating black liquorice is rare, but case reports have occurred.
Most liquorice candy sold currently contains very little true liquorice root and therefore, little glycyrrhizic acid (GZA), the active ingredient.

Occasionally, liquorice candy does contain GZA in large amounts. GZA causes sodium retention and potassium loss, which contributes to high blood pressure.
So check liquorice food labels. Take care if it contains liquorice root.
Caffeine is most commonly consumed in coffee, tea, cola and energy drinks.

In a review of five trials, people given one to two cups of strong coffee had an increase in their systolic blood pressure of 8.1 mmHg and 5.7 mmHg for diastolic blood pressure, up to about three hours after drinking it.
But three studies that lasted two weeks found drinking coffee did not increase blood pressure compared with decaffeinated coffee or avoiding caffeine. So you need to monitor your individual response to caffeine.
