However, in many cases, there’s good reason to be skeptical. “Don’t assume that all essential oils will help your skin,” says Dr. Rachel Nazarian of Schweiger Dermatology Group in New York City. “Stick to the tried-and-true oils that have been clinically studied, and when in doubt, ask your dermatologist before using.”

In other words: Do your homework. Many essential oils have been shown to be beneficial to skin, but it’s important to dilute them in a carrier oil such as argan oil or coconut oil so they’re safe to apply. (Or, alternatively, use only products that are pre-blended for use on skin to further decrease risk of irritation.) Read labels carefully, too. “Always look for blends created with 100 percent essential oils,” says Megan-Rose Talbot Kelly, national educator for Saje Natural Wellness. “Be cautious of unregulated terms like ‘all-natural,’ ‘therapeutic grade,’ and ‘fragrance oil.’”

How are the Best Essential Oils for Skin Sourced?

Originally, the process of extracting essential oils was quite taxing. A method called enfleurage was used. And yes, it is as complicated as it sounds! Enfleurage involved spreading a thin layer of animal fat onto glass, then pressing the flower or herb onto the surface. Once the fat absorbed the essential oil, distillation was used to remove the fat with alcohol. These days, steam distillation can easily be used over the latter, more abrasive option. This involves steaming the crushed harvested plant over boiling water, which helps to separate the oil and the essence from the plant.

These days, plant oil extraction can also be much healthier for your skin. Heat extraction is a cheaper, more common way to extract plant oils. We prefer cold pressed or cold processed oils, which doesn’t involve extreme heat. Cold processed oils retain the most nutrients for skin. During extraction, they are not taken to a high temperature to minimize or damage the oil’s composition.

It sounds counterintuitive, but the right oil can not only act as an astringent to rid your face of excess grease, but will also help stabilize and regulate your skin’s sebum production (i.e. your natural skin oil) to make you less oily overall. And let’s get the whole texture issue out of the way: because of their different molecular weights, many oils feel more like a serum or essence so you’re not stuck feeling sebum-ridden.

Rouleau suggests sealing in moisture and using the oil as a last step, after moisturizing. “When you use a moisturizer for oily skin, it’s generally lightweight and oil-free so you want these ingredients to absorb into the skin first to avoid any potential blocking or clogging of the pores. Then, you can add a protective layer of oil over your moisturizer to prevent water loss.”

You’d think that any face oil would automatically be a Cupid-level match for dry skin, but, like all things in beauty, it’s not that simple. Some oils are naturally more astringent and lightweight than others (like jojoba, grape seed, and pomegranate oil), so drier types want to use a rich oil that’s high in oleic acid—a fatty acid that helps condition skin, lock in moisture, and reduce irritation from dryness.

“Mix 3-5 drops directly in with your nighttime moisturizer, and apply to both the face and neck. You can also smooth over your moisturizer to provide a protective barrier to prevent dry air from pulling moisture out from the skin,” says Rouleau.

Almond Oil

It’s intensely hydrating and simple and gentle enough for anyone with eczema, dermatitis, or just really, really dry skin. It’s also incredibly high in vitamin A (i.e. the stuff retinol comes from), giving it some line-smoothing and zit-fighting power when used topically over time.

What if I told you the key to reducing your breakouts is to slather your face with oil? Too late—that’s exactly what I’m telling you. Most acne treatments on the market are filled with irritating ingredients that strip your skin of natural oils. When your skin is dry and inflamed, it overproduces sebum, leading to pimples and blackheads. Acne-safe face oils, however, work to nourish your skin, so your body can heal the zits you have without causing more. Kill ‘em with kindness, right?

Rouleau suggests following the same routine as for oily skin, as a last step. If you’re still terrified an oil will worsen your skin, try patch-testing one on the most acne-prone area of your face (it’ll be the most reactive spot, and therefore the most accurate) for a week to see what happens. If your skin doesn’t break out (any more than usual, anyway), massage a few drops of oil over your skin at the end of your skincare routine at night.

Argan Oil

Meet the only face oil you’ll ever need for your perfectly chill face. It’s rich and soothing, it sinks in quickly, and it’s incredibly high in vitamin E—an antioxidant that helps prevent skin damage, dark spots, and fine lines by blocking environmental damage. Massage it on in the morning or night (or both!) as the final step of your skincare routine.

Retinol Oils

Okay, fine, this isn’t actually a type of oil, but I know how you normies are—you want to see results, or you won’t stick with the product. DIY Essential Oil Bottles

When dispensing body oils, lotion pump bottles are the absolute best and easiest way to dispense it. The pump makes application simple and mess-free, it only lets out a small amount of oil at a time so you can apply your body oil easier without the risk of spilling your precious oil.

Alternatively, you could also use a glass dropper bottle if you prefer.

Moisturizing Body Oil Recipe

I like to use Vitamin E oil in my body oil recipes for an added boost with skin repair and hydration too!

The base for this recipe is avocado oil which is known for its moisturizing properties and is rich in vitamins, especially vitamin E oil which helps reduce scarring and wrinkling. It is also easily absorbed by the skin which is great because I hate feeling like a grease pit after applying body oil. Read more about Avocado oil benefits & uses.

  • 8 drops Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia)
  • 4 drops Frankincense (Boswellia carterii)
  • 1/4 teaspoon Vitamin E Oil
  • 1 oz Avocado oil
  • 1 oz glass lotion pump

Add ingredients in the glass bottle, shake to blend. Apply anytime skin feels dry and needs some extra moisturizing. It is especially helpful to apply after getting out of the shower before getting dressed to help lock in moisture.

This body oil could also be used as a relaxing massage oil, lavender and frankincense oil in this recipe are not only skin-repairing but also are very calming essential oils.

Essential Oil Blends for Dry Skin

I know you may not have every oil listed in these recipes. Feel free to try a different carrier oil or substitute any essential oil, you can use these recipes as guidelines or follow the recipes exactly. Some of my best blends have come from experimenting.

Dry Skin Blend #1

  • 6 drops Patchouli (Pogostemon cablin)
  • 3 drops Sandalwood (Santalum album)
  • 3 drops Myrrh (Commiphora myrrha)
  • 1/4 teaspoon Vitamin E Oil (optional)
  • 1 oz Sweet Almond

Add ingredients in a glass bottle, shake to blend.

Dry Skin Blend #2

  • 7 drops Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia)
  • 3 drops Helichrysum (Helichrysum italicum)
  • 2 drops Roman Chamomile (Anthemis nobilis)
  • 1/4 teaspoon Vitamin E Oil (optional)
  • 1 oz Jojoba Oil

Add ingredients in a glass bottle, shake to blend.

Dry Skin Blend #3

  • 4 drops Geranium (Pelargonium graveolens)
  • 4 drops Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia)
  • 4 drops Carrot Seed (Daucus carota)
  • 1/4 teaspoon Vitamin E Oil (optional)
  • 1 oz Apricot Kernel

Add ingredients in a glass bottle, shake to blend.

Dry Skin Blend #4

  • 8 drops Palmarosa (Cymbopogon martinii)
  • 2 drops Frankincense (Boswellia carterii)

How to Create A Custom Body Oil for Dry Skin

I prefer to start with 1 oz when making a new blend. This way here if I do not love my new blend, then I am not being too wasteful and stuck to long with an unfavorable recipe. If I especially love the blend, then I can make a larger bottle by doubling or tripling the recipe next time.

Step 1: Choose Your Base

First, you will need to choose the base oil for your blend. Pick 1-2 carrier oils for from the list of recommended carrier oils for dry skin. I find that rosehip oil and evening primrose are best when added as a second oil and not used as a primary base. So, for example, use 1 tablespoon of jojoba oil and 1 tablespoon of rosehip oil (2 tablespoons equal 1 oz).

Step 2: Pick Your Essential Oils

Next, pick what essential oils for dry skin you want to include in your blend. Select 2-5 essential oils. Choose oils that you enjoy, have available in your collection, and oils you do not have any sensitivities, contraindications, or allergies too.

Step 3: How Many Oil Drops?

Dilution is an important factor to remember when creating a body oil. More than likely you will want to use it daily over an extended period, 2% dilution is best. This is approximately 12 drops of essential oil per ounce of carrier oil.

Deciding how many drops of each essential oil you need in your recipe is really up to you. You will want to note any safety concerns about your chosen oil, like if they are phototoxic or if there is a safe maximum dermal level you need to stay under. Blend your essential oils together before adding to your base oil.

Step 4: Blend Oils Together

Use a drop by drop blending method, adding and smelling the aroma as you go to get the right combination you will enjoy. Remember this is a custom blend, unique just for you, you decide if you like it or not.

Be sure to have a notebook with you when you create your blend so you can write down your recipe. You will want to make it again if you like it, and maybe even share it with others. So many times I thought I would remember a new blend I have made, only to be disappointed when the recipe slipped my mind.

Final Thoughts

These body oils can be used for more than just itchy or dry skin too. They can be used as moisturizing bath oils for those of you that like to take baths, just add a few squirts in your bath water and enjoy. Be careful when getting in and out of the bathtub as it will be slippery.
