What IS Raindrop Therapy?

Raindrop therapy is a powerful technique using essential oils that was developed by D. Gary Young in the 1980s. It combines several modalities to bring balance and transformation. It also supports body systems on a physical and emotionally level.

This technique involves applying therapeutic grade essential oils to the spine, neck and feet. The session lasts about an hour however the benefits may last up to a week or more.

Gary found that combining several holistic techniques, described below, created a synergistic effect for the body. The three modalities that combine to form Raindrop Technique are:

  • Aromatherapy – Raindrop technique uses seven single essential oils, two blends and one essential oil massage blend during the session. It is congruent with the French application of aromatherapy where essential oils are applied NEAT (undiluted) to the body.
  • Vita Flex Technique – Vita Flex was brought to the US in the 1920s by Stanley Burroughs. It is an ancient Tibetan methodology meaning “vitality through the reflexes”. Its theory is based on the fact that slight pressure applied to the body creates an electric charge that is therapeutic to the body. This is known as piezoelectric.
  • Feather Stroking – This is similar to a massage term technique called effleurage. But this technique was actually termed by the Native American Indians.

What are the Benefits of Raindrop Technique?

There are numerous benefits of the Raindrop Technique. Here are just a few:

  • Balance and Re-align the Energy Centers of the Body – The combination of techniques brings electrical and structural alignment to the body. The essential oil blend of Valor helps the body align and is often referred to as “chiropractor in the bottle”.
  • Non-Manipulative Technique – No manipulation as in chiropractic is performed. The oils help support the body to come back into balance by opening energy flow throughout the body.
  • Reduce Stress and Minor Anxiety – Not only can the oils enhance positive emotions such as joy and happiness, but they can also help us release negative emotions that are subconsciously stored on a cellular level. See the section on stress for more information!
  • Aid the Body’s Natural Response to Irritation and Injury – Thyme and Oregano support the immune, respiratory, nervous, and other body systems. They are strong antioxidants.
  • Eases Muscle Discomfort after Exercise – Muscles that are tense and in minor discomfort due to exercise will also benefit. Basil, Wintergreen, Marjoram, Cypress and Peppermint essential oils may reduce tension. See the section on oils for muscles for more information!
  • Support Healthy Immune System – Thyme and Oregano essential oils support a healthy immune system.
  • Emotional Well Being and Release – Essential oils effect the limbic system where emotions are stored in the “brain’s emotional computer”.
  • Help Detox the Body Systems – The oils being high in phenols may cleanse cellular receptor sites and enhance cleansing of the body.

Raindrop Therapy is the perfect ancillary technique to incorporate into your chiropractic wellness routine!

  • Feather Stroking – This is similar to a massage term technique called effleurage. But this technique was actually termed by the Native American Indians.

How does Raindrop get its Name?

Essential oils are actually dropped from about 6 inches above your spine, simulating rain drops! It feels like a rain drop gently striking your spine, and it is very relaxing and comforting.

It is thought that the oils interact with a person’s electric field before even penetrating the skin of the back. Thereby, enhancing the electromagnetic properties of the oils as well. Amazing!

What is the Concept behind Feather Stroking?

In the 1980s Gary Young worked with a Lakota elder named Wallace Black Elk. He learned that the Lakota people went to Canada to experience the Northern Lights or Aurora Borealis (before there were border crossings and reservations). The Lakota people would raise their hands toward the light and breathe in the energy of the lights for transformational purposes.

Once the Lakota people could no longer cross the border, they created a stroking technique along the spine using a feather that simulated the energy of the Aurora Borealis. And this is the massage technique that was taught to Gary Young and is named feather stroking.

What is Raindrop Therapy

Raindrop Therapy is a healing technique using pure essential oils. Raindrop Therapy combines aromatherapy, reflexology, massage and moist heat to create healing and cleansing through structural and electrical alignment to the body. The purpose of the therapy is to bring total balance, harmony, and body wellness – mental, physical, and emotional.

Raindrop Therapy uses a sequence of nine essential oils that have been clinically tested to have antiviral, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory properties. These essential oils are dropped gently on the spine and then lightly massaged in using various techniques. The therapist dispenses the oils along the client’s spine like little drops of rain from a height of about six inches. The oils are gently brushed up the spine and lightly massaged over the rest of the back. A hot compress is then applied, which facilitates oil absorption and muscle relaxation. Developed by nutritionist Gary Young, Raindrop Therapy is based on the theory that many spinal misalignments are caused by pathogens that reside dormant along the backbone. This condition creates inflammation causing contortion and disfigurement along the spine. The application of highly antimicrobial essential oils reduces inflammation and kills the pathogens, thus providing symptom relief. Raindrop Therapy is based on Lakota Native healing.

Gary Young has researched aromatherapy and herbal medicine for over 20 years. He gives credit to the Native American Lakotas, the Hunza people of the Himalayan Mountains, and the people of Inner Mongolia for his inspiration. The premise behind Raindrop Therapy is that the use of specific antimicrobial oils applied in a particular sequence with various techniques will reduce the body’s inflammations and destroy any viral presence. Although the original theory behind this is to heal problems of the spine, modifications can be incorporated into the therapy to treat other conditions.

We use only pure, therapeutic essential oils from the Young Living Raindrop Technique® Collection in our massage. This collections contains 7 Essential Oils, 2 Essential Blends, 2 Massage Oils

Massage – Raindrop Technique

Raindrop Technique

Raindrop Technique® combines the artistry of aromatherapy with the massage.

The Raindrop Technique is a method of using a combination of reflexology, aromatherapy, massage techniques, and essential oils applied on your spine and on the feet. High quality essential oils are placed on the reflex points on the feet where the spine is represented. The Raindrop Technique is designed to bring balance to the body with its relaxing and mild application. The Raindrop Technique is a gentle application of essential oils and massage without using hard pressure or trying to force the body to change, which should never be done.

Everybody responds to the Raindrop technique differently, and what works for one may not work for another. We try to be sensitive to the person we are working on so that you can get the most out of the Raindrop Technique as you can. Most people feel relaxed during the process. After the Raindrop Massage Technique you may feel more energetic or relaxed. It depends on you and what your body needs at that time. The Raindrop Technique also helps align the energy centers of the body and helps release them if blocked. You will receive the benefits of healing hands and oils as the the Raindrop Technique is applied.

During the Raindrop Technique you will start by lying face-up on the massage table. The body should be as straight as possible with the hips flat on the table. The arms can be resting along the side of the body or over the edge of the table. The Raindrop Technique uses a layering process of 9 different Young Living therapeutic/medicinal grade essential oils applied to the feet and spine. The combination of these oils, and the application of moist warm towels to the spine and back, allows the oils to penetrate your body quickly and start their therapeutic process on a cellular level.

Essential oils used during the Raindrop Technique:

  • Valor (blend): cleanses the energy field, aligns and balances
  • Oregano: attacks viruses and bacteria
  • Thyme: attacks viruses and bacteria
  • Basil: anti-spasmodic, headache relief
  • Cypress: increases circulation
  • Wintergreen: anti-inflammatory/anti-spasmodic, analgesic (pain reliever)
  • Marjoram: relaxes musculature, lowers blood pressure
  • Peppermint: anti-spasmodic, assists in “pushing” in all other oils
  • Aroma Siez (blend): relaxing & soothing

Raindrop Technique has been known to increase the immune system, relieve back issues, and to create balance and harmony in the body – physically, mentally, and emotionally. Raindrop Technique focuses the healing essence of the essential oils directly to the spinal column where it is believed that viruses and bacteria lie dormant until the immune system weakens. The oils create an environment that is not hospitable to these “foreign” agents in our bodies and causes them to be eliminated naturally.

Raindrop Technique is also an effective detoxification and can assist you in eliminating symptoms associated with cold and flu and other common conditions.

Raindrop Technique is a very gentle therapy and offers you the opportunity to completely relax while improving your overall well being on all levels.

Some people ask, “How long does the Raindrop Technique application last?”. This depends as everybody responds differently. In general, the healthier you are along with the proper diet, exercise and a good mental attitude will help. One Raindrop Technique may last months for one person, but then for another it may be necessary to have the application done every week until the body begins to respond. The key is to retrain the body. In some cases, you will have to develop a new retention in the tissue in order for the body to stay where it should be. This may take a few weeks or even a year or longer.

Raindrop Massage

The Raindrop massage technique is the creation of Young Living founder and CEO D. Gary Young who has drawn on his experiences with Lakota wellness traditions. Our resident massage therapist Theresa Lee has studied to offer this wonderfully relaxing treatment to InnerFit Bellevue clients.

Technique

This massage technique differs from a traditional aromatherapy massage in that it focuses on the feet and back only, making it a great alternative to having their whole body massage, without sacrificing the experience a relaxing treatment. The massage techniques used include (but not limited too) vita-flex, reflexology and feather stroke, the treatment actually got its name from the application of the oils to the back where little drops are applied from about 6 inches above the skin.

Essential Oils

Nine individual oils and blends are used directly on the body using specialized massage techniques for each application, first to the feet and then to the back. The oils are undiluted when applied enhancing the effects of each one making this a deeply harmonizing, rejuvenating and relaxing experience.

The benefits you can expect from this treatment are: increase in energy and stamina, elevation in your mood, release of stress especially in the back and a release of toxins to name a few.

It’s important to note there are contra-indications to receiving this massage please ask what these are when making your appointment.

Spa Treatments > Raindrop Therapy

Raindrop Technique is a rejuvenating aromatherapy treatment inspired by Native American legend, telling of a tribal journey to seek out the healing power of the aurora borealis.

This restorative energy was absorbed by reaching high toward the northern lights with a deep inhalation and a whisper expressing awe, humility and of the interconnectedness with nature.

Envisioning the healing lights while their bodies were lightly brushed, combined with their previous healing experience helped the Lakota to carry this transcendental experience with them into the future when they were unable to travel north.

This beautiful tradition serves as the inspiration for this technique, where Young Living essential oils are applied like drops of rain, along the spine and on the feet to realign the electrical energies in the body, thus helping to alleviate discomfort caused by imbalance.

Raindrop Therapy is highly effective for rejuvenating the mind and body and particularly good treatment for ailments found in the spine.

Raindrop Technique …and safe application of essential oils!

The benefits of the Raindrop Technique in a therapy setting are becoming well-known in the massage and spa industry, so it is important for massage therapists to understand safe application.

The technique was called Raindrop because it involves dropping certain essential oils onto the spine. It also uses a technique called “finger feathering” to produce electrical stimulation and help bring essential oil benefits into the cells.

Techniques used in this therapy are quite different than traditional massage, and are worth learning and using for their ability to facilitate healthy outcomes in the science of aromatherapy.

This kit, Raindrop Technique Essential Oil Collection provides an instructional DVD, as well as the essential oils needed to begin providing this healing therapy.

What is the purpose of Raindrop?

This technique is often used to support the body in bringing about physical and electrical balance.

Eight pure essential oils are traditionally used in the application, although the therapist may choose other oils based on the individual client.

Dr. Gary Young, the creator of this therapy, chose these specific oils after concluding that one of the possible causes of scoliosis may be viruses located along the spine, causing inflammation to the body’s system. He wanted to create a hostile environment to combat viruses and bacteria along the spine, to see if the oils would be beneficial.

The therapy helps clients to understand how and why essential oils help create this environment in the body, by explanation of how plant oils work.

Each plant has its own chemical makeup, producing different chemicals needed for protection against parasites, fungi, and infection. This is sent through the plant through fluid that is it’s own special essential oil.

When oil is distilled properly, a variety of chemicals that exist naturally in each plant are captured in the essential oil that is obtained from the plant.

Raindrop requires the oils to be applied “neat”, which means they are applied to the skin from the bottle, without any dilution, which helps essential oil benefits to penetrate the top layers of skin.
This kit, Raindrop Technique Essential Oil Collection provides an instructional DVD, as well as the essential oils needed to begin providing this healing therapy.

To ensure safety, the oils used in this therapy must be verified to be pure therapeutic grade, which means they must be from organic plants and not altered. In some versions of Raindrop, e oils are applied first reflex points on the client’s feet with a finger technique.

The same oils are then applied along the spine. A couple of drops of pure grade oils (2-5 usually, depending on the size of the back) are applied, one at a time, with a Native American feathering technique. Layering the oils allows the benefits of each oil to build on the other.

Continuing education training is recommended to become a Certified Raindrop Practitioner. During training, the massage therapist will learn the science of essential oils and safe application techniques.

RAINDROP technique is a powerful, non-invasive tool for assisting the body in correcting defects in the curvature of the spine. During the years that it has been practiced, it has resolved numerous cases of scoliosis and kyphosis and eliminated the need for back surgery for thousands of people. Raindrop is also an effective technique to deal with stress, back pain, chronic back issues, supporting the immune system, preventing colds/flu or other illness. Raindrop Technique originated in the 1980s from the research of Dr. Gary Young working with a Lakota medicine man named Wallace Black Elk. It integrates Vita flex and massage, utilizing the power of essential oils in bringing the body into structural and electrical alignment.” (from the Essential Oils Desk Reference)

Raindrop Technique uses a sequence of essential oils that are immune enhancing, support the body’s natural defenses, as well as the circulatory, respiratory, endocrine, digestive, nervous, and other body systems. These oils, which are high in antioxidants, are also mood elevating and antiseptic, creating an unfavorable environment for harmful viruses and bacteria that can hibernate in the body. Essential oils are known to boost stamina and energy, help you relax, help manage stress and frustration and promote overall health, vitality, and longevity. The principal single oils used include:

The oils are dispensed in little drops from a height of about six inches above the back, which is where Raindrop Technique gets its name. They are then massaged along the spine and back muscles. They are also applied to the feet.

The whole process takes about an hour and may continue to work in the body for up to one week following a Raindrop Session, with possible realignment and bodily adjustment taking place during this time.
