Why biotin stimulates hair growth
Biotin is a vitamin, also known as vitamin B7, which is found in many of the foods we regularly eat, like eggs, soy, fish, whole wheat bread, pork, and almonds among other things.
When the minimum dose fades from your body is when you notice hair loss as well as your nails become weak and break easily.
Of course, I didn’t know all of this until my situation was desperate.
About eight months ago, I started working with a new company.
I felt like I could touch the sky with my hands because I found a position as the secretary of the president of a company.

I couldn’t pull my hair back because I felt like you could see the white spots on my scalp.
I decided to talk with a dermatologist, because I was really terrified.

The dermatologist looked my scalp over carefully in addition to looking over the blood test and urine test results that I had brought for a few minutes.
After, she asked me about my hair care routine and if I had made any important life changes in the last few months.
That’s when we got to the crucial point.
She told me that it was possible that I had started to lose hair due to stress produced by my new job.
Stress reduced the level of biotin in my body which resulted in my hair falling out.
Now, I knew why my hair was falling out.
Next, how was I supposed to get my hair back?
The dermatologist answered me in the same way I’m going to tell you.
Patience and perseverance.
And some biotin supplements that you should take every day.
And be patient.
Because the hair will start to grow five months after starting treatment.

I was so desperate and she was talking about waiting five months to see a change.
I felt frustrated, and I think my face said it all.
So, she told me the first thing I needed to do was lower my anxiety levels.
That the process starts from the inside.
As the biotin would start to level out within my body, because it works at a cellular level, the hair follicles start to produce new hair again.
And that’s how I started to take biotin.
That the treatment would work.
How to take biotin to achieve positive results in hair growth
The dermatologist recommended that I take at least 240 mg of biotin a day as a capsule for at least five months, every day.
Also, that I should incorporate more whole grains in my diet, for example a slice of whole wheat bread contains 0.02 micrograms of biotin.
So, my breakfast included two slices of whole wheat bread with cream cheese and a glass of milk because they also contain an interesting amount of biotin.
And something that at first, I didn’t like at all.
I remember the first time I ate a liver steak, I thought I was going to die.
Until a friend recommended that I prepare a salsa with finely cut onions and green chilis julienned with a glass of white wine.
From that moment on, liver seemed like a delicacy.
As well as fish.
And fresh fruits and vegetables.
And that’s how I started on the slow road to recovering my lost hair.
A long road, in which solo serenity could help me get results.
How to complement biotin treatment to get hair growth
In addition to incorporating certain foods like the ones I mentioned before, my dermatologist recommended using any shampoo with a high amount of biotin or an anti-har thinning shampoo.
Every two days I washed my hair and I massaged my scalp softly in circles when I applied the shampoo.

A month passed.
And finally I started to notice little hairs in the bald spots on my scalp.
I didn’t see as many hairs on my pillow, not even when I showered.
Also, I could feel that my hair didn’t feel as fine and fragile.
It wasn’t just the biotin that made my hair grow.
It was the perseverance and patience to finish the treatment that included the biotin capsules, the incorporation of certain foods in my diet and some specific hair products.
That’s why biotin gave me results.
It was a combination.

Biotin has a range of possible benefits
1. Macronutrient metabolism
Biotin is important for energy production. For example, several enzymes need it to function properly.
These enzymes are involved in carb, fat and protein metabolism. They initiate critical steps in the metabolic processes of these nutrients.
Biotin plays a role in:
- Gluconeogenesis: This metabolic pathway enables glucose production from sources other than carbs, such as amino acids. Biotin-containing enzymes help initiate this process.
- Fatty acid synthesis: Biotin assists enzymes that activate reactions important for the production of fatty acids.
- The breakdown of amino acids: Biotin-containing enzymes are involved in the metabolism of several important amino acids, including leucine.

2. Brittle Nails
Brittle nails are weak and easily become chipped, split or cracked.
It’s a common condition, estimated to affect around 20 percent of the world’s population.
Biotin may benefit brittle nails (7).
In one study, 8 people with brittle nails were given 2.5 mg of biotin per day for 6 to 15 months. Nail thickness improved by 25% in all 8 participants. Nail splitting was also reduced (8).
Another study of 35 people with brittle nails found 2.5 mg of biotin per day for 1.5 to 7 months improved symptoms in 67% of participants (9).
However, these studies were small and more research is needed.
Summary: Brittle nails are fragile and easily become split or cracked. Biotin supplements may help strengthen the nails.
3. Hair health
Biotin is often associated with increased hair growth and healthier, stronger hair.
There is very little evidence to support this.
However, a deficiency in biotin may lead to hair loss, which indicates that the vitamin is important for hair (2, 10).
While it is often marketed as an alternative treatment for hair loss, only people with an actual biotin deficiency get significant benefit from supplementing (11).
It is recommended that people with biotin deficiency take 30 to 100 micrograms (mcg) per day. Infants would need a smaller dose of 10 to 30 mcg.
Whether it improves hair growth in healthy people has yet to be determined.
Summary: Biotin is claimed to promote hair growth and healthy hair, but the evidence is weak. However, deficiency has been linked to hair loss, and those who are actually deficient may benefit from supplementing.
4. Pregnancy and breastfeeding
Biotin is important during pregnancy and breastfeeding. These life stages have been associated with an increased requirement for this vitamin (12, 13).
In fact, it has been estimated that up to 50% of pregnant women may develop a mild biotin deficiency. This means that it may start to affect their well-being slightly, but isn’t severe enough to cause noticeable symptoms (14, 15, 16).
Deficiencies are thought to occur due to the faster biotin breakdown within the body during pregnancy (17).
Additionally, a major cause for concern is that animal studies have found that a biotin deficiency during pregnancy may cause birth defects (18, 19, 20).
Nevertheless, remember to always consult your doctor or dietitian/nutritionist before taking supplements during pregnancy and while breastfeeding.
Summary: If you’re pregnant or breastfeeding, your biotin requirements may go up. Up to 50% of women may get less of this vitamin than they need during pregnancy.
5. Reduced blood sugar in people with diabetes
Type 2 diabetes is a metabolic disease. It’s characterized by high blood sugar levels and impaired insulin function.
Researchers have studied how biotin supplements affect blood sugar levels in type 2 diabetics.
Some evidence shows biotin concentrations in blood may be lower in people with diabetes, compared to healthy individuals (21).
Studies in diabetics given biotin alone have provided mixed results (21, 22).
However, several controlled studies indicate that biotin supplements, combined with the mineral chromium, may lower blood sugar levels in some people with type 2 diabetes (23, 24, 25, 26).
Summary: When combined with chromium, biotin may help lower blood sugar levels in people with type 2 diabetes.
6. Skin health
Biotin’s role in skin health isn’t well understood. However, it is known that you may get red, scaly skin rashes if you’re deficient (27, 28).
Some studies also suggest that biotin deficiency may sometimes cause a skin disorder called seborrheic dermatitis, also known as cradle cap (29, 30).
Biotin’s role in skin health may be related to its effect on fat metabolism, which is important for the skin and may be impaired when biotin is lacking (27).
There is no evidence showing that biotin improves skin health in people who aren’t deficient in the vitamin.
Summary: People with a biotin deficiency may experience skin problems. However, there is no evidence that the vitamin has benefits for skin in people who aren’t deficient.
7. Multiple sclerosis
Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an autoimmune disease. In MS, the protective covering of nerve fibers in the brain, spinal cord and eyes is damaged or destroyed (31).
This protective sheath is called myelin, and biotin is thought to be an important factor in producing it (32).
A pilot study in 23 people with progressive MS tested the use of high doses of biotin. Over 90% of participants had some degree of clinical improvement (33).
While this finding needs much more study, at least two randomized controlled trials have been carried out in people with progressive MS. The final results have not been published, but the preliminary results are promising (34, 35, 36).
Summary: High biotin doses hold promise for treating multiple sclerosis, a serious disease that affects the central nervous system.

Question. I took biotin regularly for a while, but I wasn’t noticing a lot of benefits for my skin, hair and nails. They certainly didn’t seem to be growing faster or stronger. But, now that I’ve stopped taking it, I’m noticing a lot more hair falling out when I brush it. Was it working and I just didn’t realize it? Do some vitamins and supplements have hidden benefits? If so, how do we know if it is working?
Answer. Vitamins and supplements often boast many claims, such as improved energy, weight loss or immune system support, but you can’t always take their labels at face value. How do we know if we need these supplements or if they are actually working?
Let’s use biotin as an example. It touts many health benefits, but its most notable claim is its ability to promote fuller, thicker, longer hair and improve the quality of skin and nails. First, a little background is needed. Biotin, also known as vitamin H or vitamin B7, is a member of the B vitamin family. All B vitamins are responsible for helping the body metabolize fats and proteins to produce energy.

Only a small amount of biotin is needed daily, and biotin deficiency is rare. Symptoms of biotin deficiency are nonspecific, but may include a change in cognition, muscle weakness, nausea, hair loss or thinning, or scaly rough skin.
Most people ingest enough biotin through their diet that supplementation is not necessary. In fact, there is no recommended daily allowance of biotin in the United States. Advocates of biotin use recommend 5000 mcg of supplemental biotin daily. Yet, this dose has not been studied, and its safety is not known.
Biotin is found in eggs, especially egg yolk; sardines; nuts, including almonds, peanuts, pecans and walnuts; soybeans; whole grains; cauliflower and bananas. Raw egg whites contain a protein, avidin, that can decrease the body’s absorption of biotin, but that is only a factor if one consumes a large amount of raw egg whites. Bacteria in our own intestines also naturally produce biotin.
There is only very weak evidence to suggest that biotin supplementation results in improvements to hair skin or nails. Biotin supplementation in those who are not biotin deficient has not been shown to improve hair health. A few studies do show that biotin supplementation in combination with other supplements (niacin and saw palmetto) may promote hair growth. This was shown only in men who already had clinical alopecia. Also, the National Institutes of Health say there is not enough evidence to recommend biotin use for hair loss.
Vitamins and supplements may have a place in our diet. Their primary function should be to fill in small nutrient gaps. They are intended to be used in addition to a well-rounded diet. If you are experiencing adverse effects from vitamin use or discontinuation, it may be time to schedule an appointment with your doctor. Always consult your pharmacist or physician before taking any vitamins or herbal supplements.

To wrap these studies up, there is definite and conclusive evidence that Biotin will help add thickness to your nails. But, if you already have healthy and thick nails, you shouldn’t expect much of a difference from taking Biotin. Even more so, if you do intend to take Biotin for your nails, you must commit to it for at least half a year before seeing substantial results.
Well, does Biotin help with hair, weight or skin?
When it comes to hair, there have only been two approved studies that stated that Biotin does help with hair growth – specifically those who already suffer from hair thinning. Study 1 is here, and Study 2 is here. In both studies, the participants were given Biotin supplements for 90 days and more.
It’s no secret that Biotin helps our metabolism, and the general rule, the better our metabolism, the better job our body does in keeping off excess fat. This article by LiveStrong does a good job of discussing the nature of Biotin and weight loss. The unfortunate news is that unless you are severely deficient of Biotin, you won’t experience any weight loss. The only exception are for people who are diabetic, in that case, you may just see a positive effect from taking Biotin for weight loss.
If you’re hoping to see any help in regards to your skin from Biotin, then don’t hold your breath. You can find this abstract where there is a general consensus that the supplement will only help with skin care if you are deficient of Biotin. If you are, then you should have red rashes on your body. If you simply have some pimples, wrinkles, or dark spots – Biotin won’t help.
Now that we all better understand what Biotin can and cannot do, let’s go into my experience.
Weight Loss with Biotin
I took 10mg of Biotin, each morning for 60 days. The truth? No weight loss, at least, nothing conclusive. But keep in mind, I’m only carrying a few extra pounds on me and I am not diabetic. Heck, I definitely saw a better result from feeding my dog NomNomNow for weight loss than with Biotin.
Hair Thickness with Biotin
Once again, 10mg of Biotin, every morning for 60 days. I did notice an improvement, believe it or not. When I shower now, I definitely find less hair to be coming out, there is a bit more volume, and the surprising thing is that my hair is growing faster.
Nail Health With Biotin
Same dosage and passage of time as above.
I can positively say that there were improvements in my nails over this time frame. My nails have been able to grow longer than before without risking breakage.
They actually look pretty darn good now.

Nada. I didn’t have rashes beforehand, so there was little to expect in this category.
Biotin is a legitimate supplement, and will likely help your nails and hair. It will definitely fall short of expectations when it comes to weight loss and skin care. What I really want to point out is that you shouldn’t look to purchase a 5,000 or 10,000mcg bottle of Biotin. I made that mistake, and I hope that you won’t. There is only so much Biotin that your body can actually process in 24 hours. The safe and cost-effective approach is taking a 2,500mcg pill daily. Any higher than that and you will likely be urinting the excess.

2. Improve the health of your skin
A biotin deficiency can lead to a variety of skin problems including rashes, acne, psoriasis, dermatitis and overall itchiness. “B vitamins play a key role in the function of the nervous system and do affect hormone function, which suggests why depleting biotin levels can in turn play a significant role in skin health,” says Fyshe. If skin isn’t nourished from the inside out, toxicities will form throughout the nervous system and manifest itself on the skin’s surface. This is one of the biggest signs that suggest a deficiency in biotin or vitamin B.
3. Supports your metabolism
Biotin plays a pivotal role in supporting metabolic function and works as a co-enzyme to help break down food, including carbohydrates, fats and protein. This reaction is further accelerated when biotin is paired with chromium picolinate. Your resting metabolic rate is elevated and food breaks down faster when consuming biotin, which is why there’s a link to biotin and accelerating weight loss. However, research is still preliminary and in no way does biotin act as a weight loss pill. A study conducted at the Alpha Therapy Center in Corpus Christi, Texas found that, “a chromium picolinate/biotin combination…can improve glycaemic control in overweight to obese individuals with type 2 diabetes; especially those patients with poor glycaemic control on oral therapy.” A 2005 study found that, “Biotin deficiency has been linked to impaired glucose tolerance and decreased utilization of glucose.”
Who should take it?
Anyone can take biotin as it is treated as a supplement and not a drug. “Since it’s found in most foods, most of us already meet our daily requirements simply by consuming a nutrient-rich diet,” notes Fyshe. Biotin is also safe for pregnant women, but it’s always best to check with your doctor to determine what dosage is right for you. It can be found in a multivitamin, B complex or in pure tablet form and is readily available over the counter.

I have curly hair, so it gives the illusion of volume and thickness in its natural state. But when I actually blow it out, my hair immediately falls flat and its true thinness finally reveals itself to the world. As it turns out, many of my friends actually have fine hair, too, and some of them even take prenatal vitamins to try to get their hair thicker. That just seems a bit excessive to me, though, as I’m nowhere near ready to try to have a kid and the idea of anything “prenatal” gives me a panic attack. But I’ve also heard that biotin might help your hair get fuller — and help your nails grow. So, to figure out if that’s actually true, I consulted with two experts.
First of all, what is biotin? Biotin is actually a water-soluble B vitamin (which means it dissolves in water after entering the body). Dr. Margarita De L Teran-Garcia, an assistant professor of nutritional sciences at the University of Illinois, told me that biotin is basically the artist formerly known as vitamin B7 or vitamin H, and since it’s a vitamin, it’s necessary to live. It works by helping your body convert carbohydrates and fats from the foods you consume into energy that your body can use, according to Dr. Sarah E. Kelling, clinical assistant professor of pharmacy at the University of Michigan College of Pharmacy.
Where can I find biotin? Well, biotin actually occurs naturally in a ton of foods. You can find it in everything from meat to fish, vegetables, soy beans, egg yolks, yeast, mushrooms, swiss chard, and a lot of other things. In fact, biotin pops up so frequently in our diets, that it’s pretty uncommon to have any sort of deficiency of it.
How much biotin do I need? As it turns out, healthy adults only need very small amounts of biotin. The National Academy of Medicine recommends most adults take 30 micrograms each day, though that number spikes up to 35 micrograms for breastfeeding women, Dr. Kelling told me.
But what happens if I don’t get enough? Although it’s incredibly uncommon to be deficient in biotin, if a person doesn’t have enough of it, they may experience a rash around their eyes, nose, or throat, eye inflammation, hair loss, tiredness, hallucinations, and burning in their extremities, Dr. Kelling told me. Dr. Teran-Garcia added that, surprisingly, people can actually be at risk of biotin deficiencies if they eat a ton of egg whites — which contain a protein that binds to biotin and stops it from being absorbed in the body. But, this is important to note: A fact sheet about biotin from the University of Michigan states that up to half of pregnant women are at risk of deficiency, so it’s important for them to take something like a prenatal multivitamin that contains biotin.
So, can it help with my hair? According to Dr. Teran-Garcia, one of the first things scientists discovered about biotin is that it can promote growth — particularly when it comes helping to keep the skin healthy and strong. But unfortunately, even though you can find shampoos with biotin in it, there’s not much scientific evidence to support the theory that it can help promote hair growth. “It’s kind of tricky because there’s not too much evidence that only biotin is working for this. It’s not the only element that is necessary to have the hair be thicker or grow faster,” Dr. Teran-Garcia said.
What about nails? Actually, Dr. Kelling told me that there have only been a “few small studies” that looked at biotin’s effect on nails. Some preliminary evidence found that biotin could increase the thickness of finger nails and toe nails in people who have brittle nails — but there are a bunch of different causes of brittle nails that have nothing to do with biotin deficiencies, including excessive dryness or nail-polish exposure. “Right now there’s insufficient evidence to determine whether it’s helpful for people to use biotin for nails and hair,” Dr. Kelling said.
