Causes of Acne

Acne is caused by a number of factors, including diet, inflammation, poor hygiene, hormonal imbalance, and zinc deficiency. Knowing more about the 5 causes of acne is essential to figuring out how apple cider vinegar may work for acne.

How Is Apple Cider Vinegar Used for Acne?

Does Apple Cider Vinegar Work for Acne?

Reason to Use #1: Apple Cider Vinegar Kills Acne Causing Bacteria

Vinegar is known to inhibit the growth of bacteria, such as Proteus vulgaris, Acinetobacter baumannii and Pseudomonas aeruginosa even at the low concentration of 3%.5 There are no studies on the effects of acetic acid on P. acnes but based on the effects of acetic acid on other bacteria, it is plausible that it works for acne.

Does Drinking Apple Cider Vinegar Help Acne?

Since topical application of ACV for acne is questionable, does drinking apple cider vinegar help acne? Studies on vinegar do show that it may help with stomach ailments and that it possesses potential anti-glycemic properties.8 Studies linking diet and acne have found that diets high in glycemic load may contribute to the pathogenesis of acne. Eating foods that have a high glycemic index stimulate the secretion of hormones that worsen acne such as insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1).9

Considering these two ideas together, ingesting ACV for acne may have potential. However, more research is necessary to determine if there is any connection between drinking apple cider vinegar and acne reduction, and if so, what the mechanisms of action may be.

Products You Can Use Instead of Apple Cider Vinegar for Acne

Until research proves that the active ingredient of apple cider vinegar is able to inhibit the growth of P. acnes, we recommend the use of proven topical antibiotics like clindamycin or over-the-counter benzoyl peroxide for acne.

Benzoyl Peroxide

Benzoyl peroxide works by actively eliminating acne-causing bacteria while also preventing clogged pores by eliminating dead skin cells.6 However, it can come with some side effects, most notably peeling, redness, and irritation. It also has a bleaching effect on both skin and fabrics, resulting in lighter skin and white spots on pillowcases and clothes. In order to keep these potential side effects to a minimum, use a 2.5% benzoyl peroxide. While it can be found in concentrations up to 10%, most studies show that 2.5% benzoyl peroxide is just as effective, with significantly less irritation.7

Even with some time for your skin to adjust, you may not be able to handle benzoyl peroxide, especially if you have sensitive skin. Irritation from benzoyl peroxide can resemble the same side effects of ACV for acne, resulting in potentially more acne. Thankfully, there are a variety of other over-the-counter topical alternatives to apple cider vinegar for acne. You can also try salicylic acid and/or glycolic acid for acne. These other acids may not kill P. acnes but have been shown to exfoliate the skin and prevent the clogging of pores.4

Salicyclic Acid

Salicylic acid is more gentle than benzoyl peroxide and works in a similar way. Studies show that it is antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory and acts as a peeling agent to remove dead skin and dissolve the debris responsible for clogging pores.10 Similar to benzoyl peroxide and apple cider vinegar for back acne, salicylic acid may cause initial irritation, including dry, peeling skin. Concentrations generally only go as high as 2%. If you are not used to salicylic acid, apply a light layer to your skin once every two or three days before gradually increasing application frequency as much as twice per day.


If you prefer using a toner to help with acne, try one with anti-inflammatory properties. Toners work to remove excess dirt, oil, makeup, and any cleanser that you may have missed, while providing hydration and correcting skin’s pH.12 Popular toners include:

  5. Witch Hazel Toner

  1. Whisk together the honey, shallot, apple cider vinegar, mustard powder, dried basil, and lemon juice.
  2. To emulsify, pour in olive oil slowly while whisking.

  • 1 tablespoon of sugar per one cup of water

  1. Fill the glass jar ¾ full with the peels and cores
  1. Stir the sugar into the water until it dissolves
  1. Pour over the apple scraps until the are covered – leave a few inches at the top

I’ve often asked this question one too many times in my life. And I say that because I’ve had seborrheic dermatitis since I was 11 years old.

Why do we get dermatitis?

I can say from my own experience and from my researches that dermatitis often comes genetically. For instance: my dad has dermatitis and so many other skin allergies. I was lucky enough to only inherit a few, but not all of them.

That said, maybe you won’t have dermatitis just because your mom and dad have it. Maybe you won’t. Or maybe no one in your family has it but you do. And often dermatitis is linked to STRESS. In my case it definitely is.

Dermatitis and stress

I can speak from my own experience that my seborrheic dermatitis gets a lot worse if I’m under stress. It is said to be linked because you get more anxious, therefore causing a chemical/metabolical imbalance in your body (it speeds up) that makes it produce more oil – creating the cyclical flare ups that end up on your head.

I also get a lot more flare ups during summer (more oil) and winter (producing excess oil for compensation).

Can dermatitis go away?

For my own experience I can tell 100% that it will not go away forever since it is a condition I’ll probably have to manage my entire life, but it sure is manageable.

And honestly, homemade remedies have had much more success with me than using any special brand shampoo or expansive treatments.

It is said that apple cider vinegar can help not only dermatitis but also other allergic/inflammatory skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis.

Just make sure you dilute it with water when using it as it may sting and be strong in case you have sores.

But why and how does apple cider vinegar work as a natural remedy for dermatitis?

Apple cider vinegar, believe it or not, works as a moisturizer.

I first learned about this when I read that people where raving about using vinegar as a fabric softner or hair conditioner. And yes, it is true.

So it helps both soothe and give back natural moisture to your scalp.

But here’s the most important effect: it balances the PH levels of your scalp.

If you have seborrheic dermatitis like me, you probably have noticed that if your hair or temperature is too dry or to moist it gets worse. If your hair is too oily or to dry – it also gets worse.

So with the help of vinegar, you can restore normal PH levels on your scalp, which will help you reach a better balance between oily/dry scalp, getting it closer to normal again and therefore eliminating flare ups and itching.

Vinegar also helps containing inflammation and infection. Therefore, reducing red skin and at the same time protecting it if it is exposed (very common if you scratch it too much).

So yes, apple cider vinegar is a natural remedy for dermatitis.

Apple Cider Vinegar Dermatitis Scalp Solution

So to make your solution at home, all you need is

A spray bottle + Filtered Water + Apple Cider Vinegar.

You should fill the bottle with half filtered water and half apple cider vinegar. It is important to dilute it with water because it can sting a bit on the first use if you have any red or more exposed areas to tackle.

How to use the Scalp Solution

I use it almost every time I wash my hair. I usually wash my hair 5-4 times a week. So I’d say I use it about 3 times a week.

What I do (and learned from Jonathan Von Ness from Queer Eye – thank you!) is I wash my hair with shampoo. Then I rinse it with water. And afterwards is when I apply the scalp solution all over my scalp.

I then leave it on my scalp for 10 minutes. Afterwards I rinse it with water and use my conditioner as usual.

Will I smell from vinegar?

If you rinse it well, you won’t. I promise.

And I also like to blow dry my scalp a little bit afterwards because it helps releasing the vinegar smell a bit. The rest of the smell naturally comes off (at least from my head) in about 30 minutes later, just from walking home outside (I normally wash my hair at the gym).

Did the scalp solution work?

Yes it did. Was it miraculous – like did it make my dermatitis go away completely and forever? No. But let me tell you what it did for me:

It clears the flare ups after you wash your hair, it improves itching A LOT and a plus: it leaves your hair softer (yes, moisturizer!).

So I truly recommend you give it a go because even though it is not miraculous (nothing will, trust me) it manages the worse parts of dermatitis quite well.

After all, we all hate the goddamn flare ups and the itching right?
